I rented a Tesla Model 3 recently. I found the speed read out on the big screen got blocked by my hand. I realized it when I went to check my speed, and couldn’t find it immediately. And to be honest, I see a lot of accessories made for Teslas that seem like they’re made to correct design flaws. Like the accessorie speedometer in this video, there’s a reason the majority of cars have a speedometer behind the steering wheel.
The one great feature that I cannot go without is the constant Blind Spot Monitoring. While driving on super-busy I-94 around Chicago, I am often surrounded by traffic zooming past. Now anytime a car approaches on either side, you get an amber light onscreen on the side that the car is approaching. Often both sides light up. I feel much safer driving in traffic with this Teslogic unit.
My Lexus does something similar. There are amber lights on the sideview mirrors that light up whenever there is a vehicle in the blindspot on that side.
@@MaxPower-11 Yup - my wife’s Venza does the same. What I like even better with the Teslogic unit is that no sideways glance is necessary. The on-screen display is right in your forward line-of-sight.
Lots of cars, when I was learning to drive in the 60’s, had the speedo in the middle where Tesla have it now, I am thinking of the Mini, Morris 1000, Morris Oxford, Austin A35, Bentley Mk VI to name but a few. It also meant your mother, wife or girlfriend could easily see what speed you were doing and didn’t hesitate to draw your attention to the fact that you were over the limit! So not really a problem for we older drivers.
Great to see an option for those that feel they must have a screen with the speed in front of them. I am super happy with the screen and glancing to see speed and navigation in one go.
I prefer no speedometer in the middle of the steering wheel, had a Prius before and that was in the centre of the dash. After the latest software update, it seems that the speedometer is bigger and makes it nicer to see while driving. Still wish they would make it even bigger.
Not a Tesla owner but I did have the opportunity to drive a Model Y for a while recently. I found not having a speedometer behind the wheel to be very annoying. I don’t think I’m likely to purchase this vehicle for myself.
I presumed that they didnt have a screen in front of the driver as they had a HUD, poor that they don't. i suppose it's good that there is an aftermarket fix.
It could do with a HUD, once i got into a car with one I really dont want to go back. I was ok with the Tesla placement but i still think its inferior to having a speed indicator in the line of sight.
Not for me, but I can see how it's useful for those who'd prefer one. Hadn't realised the stationary shop was up and running! I remember you showing the interior a year or so back and talking about your plans, so nice to see it's happened. Video to come?
I have had an aftermarket hud in my Model 3 since I got it in 2022. It is one that sits on top of the dash and is a clear projector type. It is more in my eye line than this as it appears just above the bonnet line. Its disadvantage is that the data displayed is not configurable and it has a fixed cable running along the dash to it. I hardly ever look at the speed on the centre display. The ultimate to me would be the configurability of the Teslogic unit with the display being a projector type rather than a repurposed cellphone.
Funny how the majority of minis old and new just have a central binnacle with the speedo in and you never hear complaints about that. I had an old mini and never gave it a thought
Hi Ian, not for me. Never had a problem with no speedo in front of the steering wheel. When looking at it logically the speedo on the Tesla screen means less eye movement away from looking out the windscreen than down to a point behind the wheel which takes more intense focus. The power and battery condition screens are the most interesting but would distract when driving if used so sorry Teslogic. No sale and especially as it is not an independent screen. I use my car to charge my phone most days so the lack of charging is a problem too.
It’s funny, non Tesla drivers often say to me ‘ooh I couldn’t live with no instruments right in front if me’ but I can honestly say it probably took me less than a minute to get used to it and I’ve never looked back!
I almost never even looked at my speedometer until the day they started installing speed camera's everywhere....and I would say I would always haven driven safely if they had never even had any speed limits on the roads. I didn't need speed limits or a speedometer to drive safely.
I am seriously thinking about it. The thing is not _that_ pricey and it would be a better solution than the other products that are permanently installed to the dash.
As I said in the review there are plenty of small screens on the market - but most are low res. As for power, Teslogic sell a magnetic charger disc - I don’t like my phone being sat on power all the time so don’t use it
I’ve had my first EV, a model 3, 10 days now. I’ve got so used to looking slightly to the left for the speed. Why on earth would I want it hidden behind the steering wheel again? gone whenever I’m turning.
Have a MG4 X power with the speedo in front of me, just got 20 plate model 3 as a second EV is it a problem having to look slightly left ...................NO.
Can you cover the central screen with an opaque cloth and use the car 100% from the extra screen? The main display will break one day and being able to still drive the car would be a huge bonus.
Exactly. It is randomly positioned depending on where your steering wheel is positioned. Not dangerous in a country without roundabouts. For the UK and Europe a fail and a 'Do not buy' flag. It can be useful if you collide with a Tesla. Always claim they used the wrong indicator which will be believed when you explain that it has a position that changes with the wheel rotation.
Loads of vehicles today have touch screen ? Yes it’s mad you take your eyes off the road to say change settings on your H Vac but it’s not ok to read a text? Crazy! On your phone ???
Yes, you need it in front of you. It is MUCH better UX than the alternative. Or actually, you do not need a speedo at all - in some jurisdictions. You just should maintain proper road speed by all the available means you have.
Ha ha. I love your videos. In fact bought a Tesla three weeks ago and learning a lot from your content. Since we live in down under ( Australia) we needed videos from a right hand driving perspective. North of the wall : this was refers to Game of Thrones 🤣
I have never missed display behind wheel. I find some of the information given interesting, particularly battery degradation (although too easy to worry about), but overall think this device entirely unnecessary and does clutter the clean interior of the Tesla
There's no real need to put a speedo behind the wheel, other than personal preference formed by familiarity with having one there in other cars. The usual reason given for "needing" one is that its safer because its "quicker" to look down behind the wheel than to the side at the screen, and therefore your eyes are of the road for a shorter time. This isn't really true. When you look at an instrument on the dashboard, you have to do two actions with your eyes, move the direction they are looking in, and change the distance your eyes are focused to from far distance (when you're looking ahead at the road), to medium/close distance. You don't notice these delays as your brain effectively edits them out of your consciousness (the same happens with the saccades - the constant rapid movements your eyes make to scan your field of view - you just percive a steady scene, with no awareness of the saccades). The point is, it takes a lot longer to refocus your eyes than shift your gaze, and its this refocusing of your eyes from far to near to back to far that determines the time your eyes are "off the road", not the difference between lookin down to looking slightly to one side. BTW, this is why those cheap head up display systems that focus the image at the windscreen are worse than useless, they don't eliminate the refocusing time whilst distracting your focus away from the road onto the images - real HUDs create a virtual image at infinity to eliminate the refocusing delay.
I have this and i like it specifically for the blind spot alerts. Don't care about the speedo. I like having the battery temperature on the screen rather than having to go onto the service mode. It also displays the rated range and projected range without going into the energy app. The zero to 60 timer is fun too. I use a magnetic phone charger mount so the phone stays charged in use. Routed the cable to a usb outlet on the back of the center console. Did you enable the shortcut menu? Its a little slide switch on the controller. I completely missed that on the install so had to back in to change the switch. One of the shortcuts is to manually turn on preheating for charging. Could be handy.
I don't really care about where the speedometer is (within reason). I drive my wife's Qashqai at the moment and the speedometer for that is probably as low as I'd be looking in a Tesla. The only slight difference is that my head would be tilted ever so slightly to the left
Not for me. Once you’ve driven a Tesla for a few weeks you get to know where everything is just like any other car. Handy bday present for the Tesla owning grandpa who is hard to buy for
There is a wireless charger disc you can buy. Personally I don’t want that - don’t want my phone constantly on charge. And from my testing it sips power
I’ve been driving cars since the early 1970s, however since switching to Tesla 11 months ago, I have never felt the need to move my speed display or want any more information that is standard. If I was still making RUclips videos, I might consider fitting gadgets to avoid making repetitive videos.
Is it really that much different to look down rather than left to the main screen? Also can see people reaching through the steering wheel to change screen and then realise they need to steer. And you get a very hot phone with a flat battery at the end of a long drive. Seems a fairly pointless gimmick to me.
Does it rely on you using your phone battery? I see no charger lead connection to your phone so with the screen on 100% of the time by the time you get to your destination your phone battery will be exhausted?
Gimmick. Waste of time in my view. You don't even get a display you have to use you own phone. Seeing the speed has never been a problem, and the fancy features are just that. Interesting, but ultimately something that won't get looked at, once the novelty has worn off. For what is £200, as you will have to have the extra wireless charging add on as you have to use your own phone and it will be flat on a medium or long trip if you don't have charging. Also it ruins what I think is a feature of a Tesla. No clutter. Remember the old Mini's Speedo in the middle low down. Nobody complained about that, back in the day.
I guess the ‘silent majority’ of people that actually DOES own a Tesla does not mind the ‘single screen with speed close to the steering wheel’ - at least does not mind it enough to complain. It’s REALLY not that big an issue…. IMHO
Tesla does something VERY DUMB ... => fans: "lets fix it ourselves for hundreds if not thousands and PRAISE TESLA for the opportunity to be fkd" :)) I love they sell water re-directing stuff for the Model3s where water runs into your air system.... and people "hope" for hubcabs for the CT... and so on... and so on... Where those would be considered toys for other cars its a MUST for Tesla ... you know the "best carmaker there is" that doesn't understand how to screw on wheels... or steering.... or freaking pedals... or pannels... or (well you get the idea)... laughable. Tesla is a joke and if you want it...

For a Tesla? I'd like that too. It's one of the few things that I prefer about my previous car. How can I add that?
My Lexus does something similar. There are amber lights on the sideview mirrors that light up whenever there is a vehicle in the blindspot on that side.

The current models of Mini still do have the display in the middle, Tesla is copying.
Good help when driving around with different speed limits being shown in front of you highlighted ,nice neat installation

Screen tilt kit brings the speed into an excellent spot for a quick glance. Best mod you can do to a Model 3 or Y.
Thanks for the video! When I ordered my MY i was worried about losing the HUD. Never installed one and after a week driving I was happy without it
Not a Tesla owner but I did have the opportunity to drive a Model Y for a while recently. I found not having a speedometer behind the wheel to be very annoying. I don’t think I’m likely to purchase this vehicle for myself.
I bought a ioniq Namsan it has all this on it and a HUD that warns about nearly everything, but like your videos
There must be more gadgets for a Tesla than any other known brand of cars 😄
A major oversight in my mind by Tesla, you know what wants to have to take their eye of the road to check the speed
I presumed that they didnt have a screen in front of the driver as they had a HUD, poor that they don't. i suppose it's good that there is an aftermarket fix.

You can use Teslogic as a HUD!

Mini's haven't had the central speedo for the last 10 years, it morphed into the infotainment screen.

Hi waiting on model 3 “highland” in Scotland also and your videos are keeping me going till it arrives
Amazing video! I do not need an extra speedometer
Can’t you just put a mobile with a satnav that gives you your speed ?
It’s funny, non Tesla drivers often say to me ‘ooh I couldn’t live with no instruments right in front if me’ but I can honestly say it probably took me less than a minute to get used to it and I’ve never looked back!

Good video but I won’t be bothering. Very happy with the big screen and all that it gives.
Doesn't it need a power lead plugged into it? Won't you arrive a your destination with a flat mobile phone battery?
