My brothers and their beautiful wives, and I actually go out of our way to buy each other horrendous gifts..we then roar laughing and think....yep....youre getting this next year..we recycle all gifts! All of these acceptance speeches are used by us...lol...btw...we're in our 60's and 70's,not a lot we need or want,but laughter is always great.

I would love that tea cup though. What I do if I don't like a gift is think of the person and not the gift. Think of the time and energy, and the fact that they even thought of giving me a gift. Then my excitement becomes genuinely real.

My best friend announced that he bought me an art deco print for my home even though I have a very limited wall space and absolutely hate art deco style. One problem: lying to a person, telling them they are better at something than they are - in this case picking out gifts - stumps their chances at developing and improving. If they think they know you they might not care to learn what you really like and you may spend your whole life lying to them. It's gonna backfire at some point, so it might be better (though much harder) to learn to say the truth in a polite way, or let them down gently. If you knew someone who would appreciate the present more, mention that for instance. It might hurt the gifter's feelings but it will hurt more when they eventually realise they've been lied to and don't know a person as well as they'd hoped. Besides, you'll end up chucking all the presents, which is such a waste.
Ideally though, one shouldn't bother with sending gifts to strangers unless it is people who desperately need practical items like clothing but can't afford it themselves. Get to know a person better first and you'll make life easier for the both of you.
Most of the time the people giving shit gifts know their gift is shit. They just don't care lmao.
