In comparison to the release, this game has a very good particles and shadows, but it has an extremely cursed HUD, the way of opening doors and ladder climbing.
the shadows have a lot of z-fighting issues. i've heard it's because it's just a flattened version of the original model, which would make sense. it would be a very inefficient way of doing things, which is probably why they removed it from release. it may have always only been intended as a trailer/promo art thing to make the graphics seem more advanced than they really are
@@XENON2028 I wouldn't say it's cursed per se, but it looks a lot more inspired by sci-fi games, like System Shock and XCOM. Think about that game's UI and then try to redesign it to fit an action first person shooter. Maybe sprinkle in some other pre-1997 Sci-fi games, that's how this HUD was made. Of course the UI that came with Beta (Green one) and release are infinitely better, going for as little clutter as possible, with the HEV idea, the augmented reality-style HUD that inspired many. They scrapped this HUD completely.

The final of half life alpha ....In the finished game, you will need to disable the pumps, shutting off the flow of coolant and causing the reactor to shut down. The lab will then flood the reactor with emergency coolant. Seeing this, you will switch on the pumps again, flooding the reactor to overflowing, and giving you access to the otherwise inaccessible catwalks near the upper rim. From there you can acquire a keycard allowing you to continue to the next laboratory.
Looks plain solid as far as this Alpha goes. But it does demonstrate all the great possibilities to be Game of The Year in 1998. It even tests the high poly robot model too, no frame rates were dropped at the time so this engine was a promising one as evidenced by the HD models made by Gearbox.
