This is truly gold information…. Plus a repair tip. Seriously I’m so happy you have made this video. My XF 2.2 has been giving me the same fault code only I’ve left it. Now I want to check if it’s this spring. Amazing stuff thank you.
You Sir, are a God send! Engine management light came on, OBD2 and phone app told me told me the EGR code, watched your video which allowed me to identify it was indeed the return spring which had failed. Followed your steps, cleared code, went for a long drive 😊 you saved me £££s - Thank you.
Thank you so much. My local garage just pulled off the piston yesterday and confirmed the spring was broken and that it would cost £800 all in to repair. I lost my job last year and had to replace the pads and disks recently so you don't know how relieved I am to find this fix. I've got a piece of metal I can make the bracket out of. Just need to find a spring.
Fantastic! You have actually just solved the problem that came up a couple of days ago on my Jaguar. The check engine light came on and stayed on then randomly went off, been doing the same thing over the last few days. This video appeared in my suggested videos so I watched it, checked the valve on my car and it was in the open position. I moved it back and forth and as pointed out in the video, the spring was broken! This will be my little project when the extension spring arrives!
@@crystalclearmechanicsBeen working great however, just developed a red restricted performance message. Diagnostic code is P0490-72 which is EGR circuit high. From what I can see, the vacuum doesn't seem to switch off so the valve remains open, do you think that would be a solenoid issue? After watching your EGR removal video, I'm thinking of giving that a go to give it a really good clean and will give me a chance to check as many of the pipes as I can!
Hi, the coolant manifold is split internally into 2 sections / channels, one being direct the other being cooled, the vacuum unit only diverts the gas between the two.@@draven_7621
Fantastic this is mate, just had the engine management light come on, obd reader saying p245a, followed your video to a tee, lights now gone off thank you very much 🙏🏻
Great tip - thank you. I don’t usually do any work on my XF but I thought I’d give this a go. It took a while to locate a spring (EBay) but fitting only took a few minutes. The warning light stayed on initially, but went out after a few trips.
Hi, thank you for watching and for your feedback. I get the springs from a local fasteners ( nuts and bolts etc ) shop that keep boxes of assorted springs in stock. I'm glad it cured your issue.
Great video, thanks so much. I've just done this to mine but the light is still on. Not sure if I need a stronger spring or if the light will go out on its own eventually? Thanks
Fantastic! Great video and saved me a fortune! The engine management light remains on though. Do I need to reset the light via the OBD or will it go off eventually?
Thank you very much for your feedback, I am glad the video was able to help you. I buy the springs from a fastener shop ( nuts and bolt shop ). I finish the brackets by shaping and painting to blend them in. Thanks again for watching.
I managed to locate a set of springs from Amazon for £16:99 which is a hell of a lot cheaper than taking it to JLR and then charging me £400+. Thank you so much for this video you have saved much stress, inconvenience and money lol 👍🏼
Great helpful video with a thorough explanation, thank you. Can anyone offer advice. I have just bought a second hand jag with this issue. The seller (Sheffield Motors) has kindly offered to supply the replacement part. But after seeing this video, is it worth his trouble? Is it easy to replace the Unit or a bit of a pain? Personally I would like the car as it should be, but I’m also pragmatic? Thanks.
Hi, thank you for watching and for your feedback. The part is expensive new or used unless you are lucky and can locate one cheaply. If it's being offered at no cost to you, I would take it. If you take your time and follow my video ( Jaguar XF 2.2 EGR valve unit removal ) it's not difficult too replace but you could accept the part in case needed at a later date and do the quick fix anyway. you can't lose either way. Thanks again for watching.
Brilliant, that sounds like a plan. I appreciate you getting back to me so quickly. I’m relieved the slightly cheaper price I paid for the car is staying that way for the time being 🙂 Because you sound like such a Jaguar expert 🙂are the powered struts easy to replace on a SportBack? I can see mechanically it looks very straight forward but I’m assuming I have to remove the boot lining to get to the electrics? I can not find any videos. The soft buttons on the boot do not work either but I have heard a spray of WD may solve that if I can get to it? The rear wiper doesn’t work either 😂 but I can live with that but using my neck to keep the boot open I can’t 😬
Hi great video. Do you have a suggestion on how the little bracket could be fitted back on as my 1 has came of and i think the spring is broken as it just spins around?
Hi William, the plate with the ball joint that the plastic rod fits too that plate should go backwards and forwards, it should not spin around in a circle if it does spin then it has seperated where it joins the spindle at the top or it has seperated from the butterfly valve inside the manifold. On top could be spot welded, inside you would have to take the manifold or part of the manifold off to repair it. The vacuum solonoid sucks the butterfly valve in to close off the radiator side of the manifold and when it releases it opens it so the gas passes through. The vacuum valve controls your engine warning light not the butterfly valve. If you have more questions please ask@@williamdewar4662
Very useful tip but I seem to have a different problem with the egr solenoid on my XF. The spring looks to be intact but I cannot move the actuator arm freely in and out like you do at 6:22 in your video.
Hi Malcolm, thank you for watching and for your feedback. The arm you mention is connected to a diaphragm ( not a solenoid ), it works on vacuum. The spring gives some resistance but it should move in and out freely. Try disconnecting the arm from the lever to see which is causing the issue.
@@crystalclearmechanics Thank you for very prompt reply. I have just disconnected the arm and everything seems ok. The arm moves freely and the lever with the spring on does move with a fair bit of resistance. Hello - this is a great video and thanks for sharing. I believe I have the same issue with my Jag XF. I have an engine management light on with the code relating to the EGR: P0407-16 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor B Circuit Low. Will this hopefully get rid of the engine light?
Thank you for the video! I have that problem but it occured when I was test-driving the car before purchase. The dealer will pay for the repair and replace the actual part but the repair will happen in 3-4 weeks. The engine management light stayed off for a week and now it’s on again. I would have to drive a 1500km trip on weekend and maybe 500-1000km more before the repair. What does this problem cause? Can I use the car normally until the repair will be done or should I do this repair before it?
Hi, thank you for watching and for your feedback. The exhaust gas heats to 500 degrees, the cooler takes it down to 250-300 degrees before it enters the EGR valve and then the air intake. Inside the cooler manifold is a butterfly flap (like on a carb) the coolant manifold has 2 ports, one is a radiator and the other by-passes the radiator.the butterfly flap alternately shuts each port off when the exhaust gas needs heating or cooling. Usually when the spring is broken the vacuum valve on top of the cooler sucks the valve open and blocks off the cooler radiator, the vacuum valve does close due to the diaphram springing back to it's closed position but it's not strong enough to do the job correctly, This is why sometimes the light stays off for a while. As for driving with that problem you need to get the dealers OK, the responsibility if anything else goes wrong then stays with them. .If I remember correctly (don't quote me) Jaguar will only sell the complete unit EGR valve cooler etc and it was very expensive, once the new component is fitted it will need to be adapted to the car. Thanks again for watching.
Hi, thanks for your feedback. We shape and paint the bracket to finish off so it blends in, but for simplicity left it as is for the video. Many thanks again for your feedback.
Hi Ian, thank you for watching and for your feedback. The vacuum valve fitted on top of the manifold with the electrical connection ( check the electrical connection is good ) triggers the fault code if it does not open and shut correctly, it's the spring coil that snaps which is hard to see but if you're sure the spring is sound then check the vacuum valve arm is moving freely , if not then check the vacuum pipe to the vacuum valve has vacuum also disconnect the vacuum arm to the lever (spring end) and check the lever moves freely and is tensioned. The diaphragm in the vacuum valve could be faulty or the valve itself could be faulty. The lever (spring end) operates a butterfly valve inside the manifold which allows exhaust gas to go through or bypass the radiator in the manifold. .
@crystalclearmechanics thank you kindly for a quick reply and details. I have disconnected the arm, and the gate returns fully. When the engine is switched off. Around 4 minutes later, the vacuum releases the arm and shuts again. But it looks like the arm is full in the diaphragm, i.e., in the open possession all the time. I will check the connections and wiring. Thank you kindly once again 🙏
