  • Murray Walker is also known as the "Voice of Formula 1" and for many racing fans worldwide he is part and parcel of the sport they fell in love with. Murray has gained a global following since 1978 when he started as the BBC television commentator, but his career began in 1948 traveling around the United Kingdom covering motorbike events for radio.
He has a distinctive, enthusiastic commentary style and is known for his gentlemanly and considerate conduct, seeing the best in drivers. There is no doubt that without him Formula 1 would not be as popular as it is now.
Just before his 90th birthday I had the opportunity to meet him in his house in the beautiful English countryside to talk about how he started, the challenges of commentating with James Hunt and why he rates Prost ahead of Senna.

Oswald Bolcke you must not have grown up listening to his F1 broadcasts. Races haven’t been the same without him calling them. The guys calling the races now just don’t have the enthusiasm, even Martin Brundle, who was his last co-commentator, doesn’t have the same spark as he did when he worked with Murray.

Murray - I'm writing this assuming you will read it. I feel sometimes you feel a bit embarrassed about your 'Murrayisms'....but let it be known we wouldn't change you for the world. You epitomise all what we saw in and loved about motorsport. And you brought that drama and passion to our living rooms, to our conversations and to our hearts. We love you Murray. I met you as a young boy about 20 years ago at a signing of your book, and you said 'that was a good one of me' when my dad took our photo. Truth is, everything was a good one of you. Rest easy pal. A fan, a gentleman, a legend.

    • @csykes23
      @csykes23 3 года назад +2

And I'm sad not just because you've gone, but because you took what represented so much. A generation of men, who took pride and joy in motorsport, and cars and competition. The sport is different today. Better in some ways, but poorer in so many others. What happened to the simple days of driving miles to stand in the cold to watch our heroes battle it out. To the days of normal blokes who sold cars though the week battling it out on our TV sets, real men with real hearts and real life struggles. To the days of, being a young boy, genuine excitement and admiration of my heroes risking everything for the glory. I don't want to talk about how I feel about racing these days, I just want to remember the past. F1, BTCC, Le Mans, CART, rallying...hey even NASCAR. The late 90s were amazing. Murray was in love with the relative simplicity of racing cars, and racing them fast....and these days we've fallen out of love with the motorcar. And this is why I'm sad.

Probably the voice of my childhood. I was blessed to be growing up in the era of Piquet, Senna, Prost and Mansell - Murray's commentary was as much a part of Formula One to me as the cars and drivers. I think it's an absolute travesty that he hasn't been Knighted. Murray is a national treasure, probably an international one.

I was thinking about Murray on Saturday (purely coincidence) as I was rearranging my collection and found myself flicking through one of his many books. I spent some time figuring out what age he must be now and thinking that "it's still comforting to know he's still around at least". I usually check the F1 news several times a day but on this occasion didn't check in again until late Sunday evening and learned the gut wrenching news a little later than the rest of the world. I am still sad and can't quite believe it (I know he WAS 97) but he was no ordinary man. He was Murray. F1 will not change (as it was already much less enjoyable without him for the past 20 years) but the world feels emptier now he is gone. We LOVED you Murray and we will continue to miss you. Thank you for being all you were.

He's super serious in his work life and a 100% family man away from it. He didn't seek attention, in fact he loved his privacy. He has a very loving family life and often mentioned them in his greatest triumphs. I'd say he was the all round man that everyone should strive to be.

I'm 54 years old and Murray has been a huge part of my life for 43 of those years. The irony is that I never met him, he didn't know me, but I knew him through my love of motor sport, primarily Formula One but also BTCC and Rally Cross. I don't think anyone who followed Murray would dispute he was as big as any of the icons in the sport, Enzo Ferrari, Bernie Ecclestone, Ayrton Senna etc. For his knowledge, fanatical enthusiasm and character, he gave as much, if not more than any team owner or driver. He was and always will be the voice of Formula One and the voice of my youth! I'm not ashamed to say I cried from the bottom of my soul when I heard the dear man had passed away, but what a fantastic full life he lead and what a vast legacy he has left us with. What a fabulous race he must be commentating on in heaven now; the grid with Jim Clark, Fangio, Sir Stirling, Ayrton and so many others. There won't be a moments peace up there with Murray. GOD BLESS YOU MURRAY! THANKS FOR THE WONDERFUL, PRECIOUS MEMORIES.

Murray Walker is my all time favourite commentator. I love his passion and his impulsive commentating imperfections on the spur of the moment were all part of his charm!
That bit about Bernie Ecclestone however, whilst I agree that he has massively improved the sport for the public viewing and in terms of safety, it has gone a bit too far the other way. Too many rules on defending your position, the false sense of overtaking with DRS and the modern, dreary race tracks that pop up in the middle east and Asia makes me long for the pre 2000 era.

Incredible to see he lived to be almost a hundred years old. Rest in peace Murray, you've brought enormous joy to generations of motorsports fans!

Daily Mail made Murray retire? Well that's one more reason to hate them and wish they all end up bankrupt.

Lovely interview, thanks for posting it. I especially love the bit on Ayrton Senna, Murray has been very outspoken.

I have been watching old f1 races from the 80s and 90s and murray was the commentator and with his enthusasm it made the races was so entertaining I sometimes I wish he would come back as a commentator

I saw Murray give a speech on the QE2 when I worked on it back in 2002 or 2003. What an amazing story teller, and gentleman he is. F1 just hasn't been the same since he left.

Nothing ‘old fool’ about Murray Walker - who ever wrote that was a fool - he was an absolute genius as a commentator! RIP.

As a little boy aged 5 I might not of found a passion for all things F1 if it were not for this man.
So thank you Murray for being an inspiration, I may not have reached the dizzy heights of F1 but it has lead me to some interesting positions, discoveries and inventions of my own.

So sad learning of Murray Walker passing away. Like many watched motor sport addictively with Murray's commentary from a young age. Murray made me a life long passionate F1 follower. Lovely to read all the hundreds of wonderful comments from everyone. Murray you will truly be missed. RIP old chap.
