  • A frequently asked question each year when we get our first dose of warm weather in late winter is "should I stop feeding birds now that it is warm?"

Hello from Lansing Michigan, I started to see red winged black birds at my feeders for the last few days, glad to see them back, the bluebirds are showing interest in my bird boxes, last year we had a successful brood, 4 eggs to 4 healthy chicks, they are still visiting their natal grounds😊.
Love your monthly bird update, great info, thank you.

Question for you Mark, If we keep feeding for most of spring don't we run the risk of changing the natural migrating patterns?

I don't think there is any chance of that. Most of the birds that are eating at your feeders in winter, time their return north with the hatch of the insects they have to feed their babies. Not to mention insects are an important source of nutrition for the adults as well. With the exception of goldfinches and that dove group, all baby birds have to have insects as their source of calcium. 99% of birds do not feed their young seed. Spring feeding is actually very important to local birds, especially during late cold snaps as natural seed supplies are running quite low from last fall.

No problem what so ever. It gets hectic so we certainly could have missed it.

Our 3 inches of snow is quickly melting away and I continue to feed birds year round. With nest building just around the corner and there's a couple of things I like to do to help them with building materials. I have a yarn ball and they can come and pull a some strips of yarn. One year my mom unravelled an old sweater and cut the yarn about 4" lengths. I spread hair from when I groom my cats. A hair stylist gave me some nice length of hair. It's fun watching little birds picking up animal hair. It looks like a moustache when they get the hair all bunched up in their beaks.

I feel so bad I have to get rid of my birdfeeder that I’ve had out there for 20 years because my condo association saw a rat and thinks it’s from the birdfeeder so now I had to get rid of it or my birds gonna be OK that I’ve been feeding for 20 years devastated

Maybe you can find a nearby neighbour or friend who will let you move your feeder to their property, or maybe there is a park where you can put up a suet feeder and a seed feeder.

Hi, I have a question about how far apart to put a nesting box for a bluebird and a chickadee? Thanks

Chickadees and bluebirds should be ok together. I would say no closer than 30 feet. I like my bluebird houses more in the open, while chickadee boxes can go just about anywhere but I like them closer to or in the trees.

I wish I didnt have to stop but we have bears and they are a constant problem. I have a much better diversity of birds in the summer than I do in the winter. Last winter I had birds (titmouse (mice?) and cardinals) that Ive never had at my feeders but always wanted. When I had to stop in the spring, they never came back.

That is an unfortunate situation that is incredibly difficult to deal with.
