The joy he displayed on his face after lighting his fireplace was absolutely priceless.
It was a priceless moment, give one might say it was set in stone … will it draw or will it smoke us out? It works very well indeed.
I would rather have a home like that than any million-dollar mansion. Your blessed
I feel the same Larry. I don’t have a lot of money but, consider myself one of the richest man on the planet.
Yeah
Me too
Delusional
@@TheWoodlandEscape I couldn't even afford the land the cabin is on, was it given or did you have to buy it?
Genuine old school real man are rare species nowadays. High quality work, craftsmanship and life
We thank you for the kind words and for your interest in our channel.
You've chosen the right kind of fireplace, being a Lord Rumford, it throws the most heat. Enjoy, I built my own chimney and Rumford and it has been wonderful watching the flames for hours, dreaming.
They truly do cast some good heat, with the added benefit of looking good, lol.
Agree but this firebox is improperly constructed
A slower pace that combines the joy of accomplishment and solitude, wrought by a hard-working, skilled and self-sufficient man. It's good to see someone so comfortable with himself.
Very flattering, thank you.
lighting the fire for the first time is always a special moment. Sitzing at the fire, watching it for hours is what I call „man TV“.
My family and I call it caveman tv lol
*sitzing* hat dich verraten 😁👍
Man ,now that's living .my heart yearns to live simple like this especially in today's climate of the world
We may all be doing it before too long. Those of us left. Ugh
so do it aint nothing but hard work ahead for it.
Yes but with AC and Electricity and indoor plumbing.
@@kfl611 I don't need that lol
@@adamwiech4874 My mom grew up with no running water, central heat or electricity. That's a little too primitive for a soft boy like me. Not too fond of the outhouse.
I dream often of living the life of Jeremiah Johnson, but that life has not been reserved for me. Thank you sir for letting me and countless others vicariously live that life through you.
Godspeed
A lovely compliment, Soli, thank you.
What a grand feeling it is to light that first fire and the ceiling isn’t filled with smoke. Great work all around.
Indeed, that would have been a tad disappointing David. Glad you’re enjoying our channel.
Look how gracefully this man has aged. This is what a mans mind is happiest doing, we’re so out of our element esp in today’s world
Thanks Em and here all along I thought myself a tad haggard. Living close to the land is quite relaxing.
@@TheWoodlandEscape that’s manly ruggedness, not the emasculated plastic surgery man of today….ur living my dream man, I wanna leave the city life eventually and live like u. City ppl r slowly losing their minds. Respect bro.
Peter,
Each time that I watch your videos, whether the first time or several times, I know that I am watching a "Kindred Spirit." It is not often that a Kindred Spirit appears, but when it does it leaves a lightness in the heart that that never grows old. I pray for many more years to you, my friend!
Loved being there. I will definitely be back, Thank u for the opportunity ❤️👍
Glad you enjoyed your stay Brian … welcome back anytime.
Simply wonderful! What a beautiful project that will keep the legacy of our ancestors way of life alive and real,to future generations.
Nice to see the fruits of your labour come to fruition. The first fire must have been satisfying. Well done Peter.
Satisfying indeed Doug.
I have strived for this all my life. As a Traditional Catholic ex alcoholic 23 year old Kentuckian. I need to reconnect with my old roots and find peace finally.
I wish you well a rewarding journey, Pat.
Back to a time of sanity, and respect of all things given to us by our creator. May God richly bless you in all that you do!
Pioneer Life is a nice fantasy that is busted once you consider dentistry and surgery.
@@bipslone8880 One can easily live a pioneer life today and still have dentistry and surgery. Peter appears to have a good set of teeth and in outstanding shape.
@@buggyridge my point was missed but thanks for coming out.
The smile on your face says it all. That's a beautiful place you have there. God bless you, have a fine day.
Now I understand why you're so agile. Since being an arborist you've managed to use all the muscles in your body. I'd say it served you well.
The tavern is beautiful and I especially like the fireplace. Great job, Peter!!!
He is actually 45 years old but the life was too hard in 1700's.
Looks like New Salem in Illinois

Fireplace turned out great. Rumfords like tall longer wood length teepee fires built just like you did on the floor. When you want heat. The tall fires take advantage of the draft in the tall fire box and follow the standing wood right up it’s length. Be careful though the fireplace will blast you out of the cabin. The rumfords are the best. For cooking your fire would work better. And I know you are breaking the fireplace in. Going to be best friend when it’s winter.
That is great information Jim. I’ve heated with wood my entire adult life but, the Rumford fireplace is new to me , so, lots to learn. Thank you.
My cousin was a master brick mason. We were his last job before he retired. We helped him build a 4 ft and 5ft rumsford fireplaces and a brick oven next to the 5 ft one. Once you break in the rumford the other guy was right about setting your wood on end against the back wall to really use it correctly. Once the room is hot or your cooking let it die down. Rumford fireplaces are dramatic and are designed to kick the heat into the room. The reason I checked out your video was because I saw rumford. I subscribed, very good channel.
@@TheWoodlandEscape I too built my own back around 99’ -00’. It was a challenge but well worth it. I can tell by the pride in your eyes and smile what the fireplace and chimney mean to you. It’s very elemental, not only the symbolic hearth of home and sustenance, but literally what will keep you alive! Another thing we have in common, I am an arborist as well. Seems that trees and stones go together.
You know a man is legit living beautifully of the land when you look like your wearing a sack ... love it
I could live the rest of my days this way.
My back hurts just watching this guy. Great video.
congratulations on the completion of your cabin and your first meal. this series was an absolute joy to watch. thank you
Thanks Mike.
I stand and watch someone that still cares about the day & times! I say to you Sir.....BRAVO.......ATB
After the rough day I've had this was a most welcome post. The beautiful orange glow of that fire was very welcoming!
May God bless you with rest tonight.
You are a lord my friend into the nature i want something like that 🇬🇷🙏
There is nothing like a good fire not just because it keep you warm but it makes you feel good 😌 l love a at winter time great video thank you sir 👏👏
I could watch and listen to you all day.
What a sense of accomplishment and pride. You were beaming with excitement. Well earned, sir!
An awesome cabin and fireplace. I have a book about the Rumford fireplace design and believe it to be the best design. Nice job on all your skills and work.
Thanks, Dan.
simply charmed to watch this. rarely do i see someone "want" to start a fire from a spark, and i know of a tradition in many culture of the first fire being lit needing to come from a spark. lovely to watch
Thank you.
It brings me joy seeing a man at such peace living his life.
Most days Mark!
@@TheWoodlandEscape thats great to hear.. I can at least feel I'm there for the moment at a real cabin.
Imagine two hundred years from now, your descendents sitting around that fireplace and telling stories about their great, great, great, great grandparents who came to this land in their retirement and built this cabin with their own hands. As a plus, they can dig out the old DVDs and see you build it log by log, rock by rock.😊
That is an interesting thought, Neva. Actually a tad comforting.
Bill Gates will prevent this.
@@antoniescargo1529 he’s dang sure trying!
Yeah i can imagine that
With climate change..massive fires..I'd give them..at this rate..two years..anyway..will make great content fodder..how I rebuilt my burnt out cabin every year for a decade...there is no escape from this...
I'm a mason of 30+yrs,2nd gen..and that fireplace had a very special, unique, soothing ,heartfelt glow when it was lit..some things you can't buy..congradulations.
I certainly have a new respect for your trade Sir. Thanks for your interest.
@@TheWoodlandEscape SO YOU LAID THAT ON YOUR OWN...WOW..I tip my hat to you sir ,well done and BEAUTIFUL. I haven't watched but 3 videos. Very well done.Congradulations. It breaks my heart to brick homes these days with no fireplace or worse they have fake gas logs. I left Virginia for Denver,Co to lay bricks for about a year till my son missed his mom and i had to return to Va. Even the apartments in Denver had wood burning fireplaces, not to mention $1400month rent, lol. I'm sure your fireplace will bring you much enjoyment. I'm currently getting into sailing and have a love for the old wooden sailboats with the old style interiors.Ill be seeing your vids and thanks for uploading them. Very peaceful and informative
i ve a smile in my face while seeing this man light on the first time his new fire place.. so simple so good, we ve to slow down our live.. to enjoy the simple way!
Indeed Hanes, if we were all to slow down a tad and live more simply, I believe the world would be a better place.
Been watching you for awhile Peter your have a beautiful way of sharing your methods while educating the audience. You bring a real ness to life as it was and being honest about current life. Off grid living in it's truest form. Credit to your videographer for following you on your passion for the old days. Greetings from the Adirondacks, NY

we enjoyed your fine presentation a very realistic 1700's period . was that a rumford fireplace design they;re excellent ,we liked your hat and clothing they looked period correct. your friend chipmunk is cute.
Thanks you and yes, we built the fireplace to Rumford specs.
now this is life goals living life to the fullest and loving what you do
That stone that you first dug up is still beautiful! Put it somewhere in your yard or foreground! It's amazing! LOVE YOUR HOME! JUST WOW!
Wow! A man who is smart, hard working, organized, mature, and attractive! Kathy got a winner there.
Sorry Cathy not Kathy.
So wonderful that you can live your dream.
You are one in a million. Don't let the down voters bother you. There are always people who like nothing better than to be negative. You are a amazing man! Sharon🇺🇸
Thanks for your kind words Sharon. It does take a lot get me down and negative people are not one of them.
That random dirt from the forest you’re digging in looks better than the high dollar potting soil we buy lol.
Virgin forest soil can’t be beat … thousands of years of decomposition of organic matter!
The stuff sold to us as potting soil is nothing more than wood chips. Sad truly sad.
My forefathers were blacksmiths and wheelwrights, so l enjoyed watching your segment on making essentials for your cabin.
We live off the grid here in New Zealand and have gone through our first winter with no fireplace. It’s spring here now and finally the wood burner is in.
The mistake we made was mounting our solar panels to the roof without first considering where the flue for the fire would go through, spacing of the rafters etc.
Hubby said he was getting too old to nut it out himself, so trying to get tradies out here was a major hassle. Living remotely is both a blessing and a curse.
I’m cranking up the fire even though I have to have every door and window open. I’m making up for lost time. Oh the joy of been warm.
I too enjoyed your video on the garden and chill store. I have the perfect place where the bank behind our cabin has been dug out when our building platform was prepared. Because this is New Zealand my cool store will be a Hobbit style cob cabin, with a living roof. It will blend in nicely into the native New Zealand bush. I am collecting the clay as l dig out our new vegetable garden. Our neighbours are providing the wine bottles. It’s a sacrifice they are happy to make. Bloody decent of them to help 🤣🤣🤣.
Burr, I would be making up for lost time as well. Sounds to me like lead an idyllic lifestyle. Always thought I’d like to visit NZ.
just great your videos. thanks
Love how you bring the past to life!
Love this lifestyle, we had a few properties, one on the river, all the bells and whistles of life you could say but nothing beats what you are doing.. love it.
Personally I'd take a ciqlluaq lit and heated by a naniq, but that's a different home for a different place.
May the hearthstones stay strong and keep you warm.
I wished I had a home just like that in the woods away from city life, always was my strive, but, I unfortunately will never have . God Bless you 🕊🕊🕊🕊 ❤️❤️
Amazing men walk the Earth. Thank you
Those little folding saws are dandy! There are some very good brands of them for pruning and you can get some in several sizes.
It looks like he is useing a ichiban samurai saw. It doesnt fold, but is arguably the best hand/limbing saw out.
You Frind have it right!!!!!
My grandfather built a fireplace like that @ 80 years ago, just as I was born. We burned @ 4.5 cords of wood per year to keep the house warm. Then @ 60 years ago, a old fellow who had been building fireplaces came along and measured it up. He bricked it up 3 coarse from the bottom, filled the base with sand and put a steel plate with glass doors across the front and cut our firewood to less that one cord per year. He also cut a hole in the wall and fed 4" of air in to the fire from outside. You have built a beautiful, authentic hot air vacuum cleaner, sucking all the heat out of the house and cold air in every crack from outside.
It isn’t as efficient as you grandfather’s but it is how they were built, historically.
@@TheWoodlandEscape So you justify burning up the forest and polluting the atmosphere in the name of being historically correct?
My great admiration goes to this skilled man, fully in charge of his own destiny and found that contentment is not out there but lies at your own feet.
Outstanding
You must be super happy. Well done 👏

He sees more value in the wood he sawed than his pay. I love this guy🤠
I drive a bucket truck for a friend that supports his Cummins swapping everything addiction by doing tree work so I'm saving up for a sawmill to mill what I can't find for my small house I'm building from reclaimed materials. It may look weird when I'm done but I really don't care.

@@TheWoodlandEscape I do live in beauty here NW! Hoods Canal is shaped like a hook, an I'm right at apex. I can go right, at bottom of my hill, along hood Canal south shore, or straight straight an north along North Shore. I'm in between two Indian casinos an sometimes go to breakfast with friends. Across street from breakfast is Indian pot shop! I live next to wide/flat, well used game trail to creek an only water supply for local area. 2 nights ago Mt. lion run over my roofs, (for real!) Mom cat pooped outside my window at 3:00am for a bountry for her kittens (too not go down hillside to 101)! But now kittens are teenagers, pushing past mom's authority. So right past her markings they use my roof as toy sometime! From side they jump up on water table, an up onto wood kindling box in rear. Yeah, I live in great region, scuba diving in San Juan Islands, around octopus, Orcas an all the rest! Great times an great stories! Check this: at very tip of America is an island an Lighthouse, at top of hero straights. This island is basalt vertical rock wall cliff rock formation, 600 ft deep! Every thing moves an turns on that corner from Orcas to submarines, huge Lin Cod fish lay on outcropping on that straight vertical wall, an let current bring them chow. About 60ft ft just south of the corner of America, part of the wall fell off, leaving a room with ceiling an two walls just like in your house but under water. But there is No Floor, only straight down depth for 540ft.. At 300ft is a black line, limiting any vision, but you know there is 300ft below that black line. Scariest place I've even been. (not just depth, but what might pass in front of you) With ceiling you can see yourself rise an fall inches in depth with every breath. But then a huge lin cod passes in front of you, or a pod of killer whales. An they know your there with all air bubbles! (An I've seen them be savage, top of the food chain killers), but I also seen them close up in middle of pod of 5 for almost an hour an they waited their turn for affection! Yeah, I live in amazing place! My diving partner passed, so I'm the only one that knows that roof off/room on the very NW corner of America!
