FINALLY!!!! SOMEONE BUILDING OLD SCHOOL!!!! THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
My back aches for you. After restoring dozens of Historic properties on the East Coast for the Park service and private foundations, i'll tell you that stone work done properly is THE most satisfying because of it's value to human comfort and Historic feel and function. I just sold my 1799 farm in Maine after restoring the house to Colonial condition and moved back to Virginia. I miss being able to work after 45 years of the Carpenter's love/hate relationship with building, but now i can go visit these places and see for myself MY Contribution to Restoration in general. I'd rather live in one of these lovely homes that a brand new stick built monster full of chemicals and the expense associated with maintaining them.
I am just plain jealous. I love seeing historic cabins\buildings\structures maintained and restored. I am a 'restorationist.' DON't tear it down, call it 'too old,' or any such cr@p. RESTORE it and love it!
Thank you my friend!! I still have lots to do and lots to share
I do have some but need to do some digging to get facts.
how did you get specialized in restoration? id love to do that and promote it rather than these new construction methods which are not going to stand the tests of time
So nice!!!
I never tire of watching this video .. especially after I have mostly finished my fireplace..which was the reason I found this guy!!! Mine is almost as beautiful as his!!!
We have things in common.... obsession!!! For sure! Also we both are using stones that someone else has used before! Whenever I am working with used materials I cannot help but think of the guys that touched the stones a long time ago. My fireplace has old paving stones...maybe 200 years..with tool marks! They were dug up when new sewer pipes were being installed... it's the little things!!!!
I’ll be doing a video for the first of the year at some point. Hoping to share for pictures I took. I have one that I think you are going to love! It’s a picture of the stone work in the loft. On both the right and left there are shadows of men dressed in 1800s clothing. Complete with hats and suit jackets. It looks like they are inspecting my work.
@@logcabinlifestyle I am looking forward to it! Many thanks!
Been cuttin and layin stone material for close to 40 yrs. and I say "if you like it, I love it" I'm sure you did enough research to know how to build what you want. Looks great. What I really like is your lamp collection. A hobby of mine for many yrs. Your hammer is what we used to refer to as a "Rifters" hammer. Keep up the good work. Nice video.
There is a reason tractors have dual brakes. When one wheel slips (or slips more) press that brake to transfer power to the other wheel. You can walk out of slippery spots by transferring power back and forth. Love your cabin! Awesome job.
There's also usually a rear locker pedal in the center.
@@plainandsimple1 That is something found on SOME tractors starting in the 1960s. The Farmall tractors (Cub, A, B, C, H, M, and into the x00 series) never had a locker and there was no easy way to install one.
Dang..... This man works like an army mule. Holy Moly.
I'm glad he mentioned in his description that there is no wood beneath the fireplace because it sure looked like he built it right on top of the wood floor.
And is it just me or is that cement mix a little sandy and dry which makes me think that arch is going to fail down the road in a crumbling fashion ? He even says the mixture is weak....
@@WellDone..101 Who knows
Wow . Perfection . 👍👏
It's a real privilege to see someone make such a nice, well constructed fireplace. It's looks really authentic and adds a very homely feature to the cabin.
I wish we had more proper old cabins here in the UK as I would almost definitely live in one and if it didn't have a fireplace then this is the sort of thing I'd build.
Thanks for sharing the hard work.
Thank you so much
Totally amazing.
Is this a dream house or what?... for some of us!!
I first searched 19th century fireplace...this came up first ..I am building my third or fourth..I am a carpenter...this is soooo cool....I'm an expat USA in Peru...I miss Maine USA!! I am making a Maine camp inside my large first floor. Gonna look similar to what his cabin appears... The fireplace is a lot of work!!;
Thanks Vincent!!
Man that whole process with the arch was amazing! Pretty awesome when that support dropped down exactly like you said it would!
Thank you!
I believe the arch was started by Greece architecture and adopted by Romans and other civilizations later on. The Romans basically took from the Grecian and made everything just bigger. By the way, I feel and appreciate the pain of your back, just looking at those stones. May the Lord protect your back. I am totally impressed.
Thank you my friend
its amazing to see how far along your cabin has come, it truly is a home to be proud of
You are truly a master at your craft sir. I love seeing ancient craftsmanship still used at such a level as this. Thank you so very much.
Thank you!
It is truly a small world. I watch log cabin builds from time to time. I came across yours today and I had to rewind the video 4 times to make sure I heard you right when you said Lisbon, OH then you stated talking about Johnny Appleseed and I just couldn't believe it! We go to Johnny Appleseed every year! My husband and I live 20 mins from Lisbon. Your house is beautiful and I hope one day we can also build something. I love the low cost living. I am a stay at home mom and my husband supports our family financially so low cost living is definitely something I appreciate. Your house is beautiful! And your channel is awesome! Definitely inspiring!
Thank you so very much, make sure to bring you kids and see me at the Johnny Appleseed festival on the 16-17th.
I’ve been watching you on my TV and I didn’t know how to leave a comment but I got on my phone and I love the cabin but I like the loft and all that you have done to I would loved to had some ground in the country with a log cabin but I’m to old to do it now but I love your video’s keep up the hot work
Thank you Billy for figuring out how to make a comment. It means a lot to me!!
Your videos are AWESOME! 😍
I’m just in love with everything about the rustic part of your cabin! 🥰
Thanks Mary!
It’s gorgeous. Beautiful taste. Thank you.
Outstanding!!!
Very nice. Thanks for sharing. Great educational channel. I’m putting my old fireplace back the way it should be. Someone added an 80’s raised hearth on it. I bought a new cookstove from Canada. She’s beauty. I was going to put it in front of my fireplace. I have enough space on the side also. Good idea.
Your work is amazing! That fireplace is perfect, sir. You should be very proud. I love it so much.
Thank you!
Beautiful, and so worth all your hard labor!!! Enjoy.
Thx for sharing, lucky to have original stone 🌨🌲❄
It's still beautiful every time I see it!!!
Talk about authenticity here. Love the details applied and is totally amazing.
Very nice. I live in southwestern Pennsylvania also. My house is an old farmhouse built in 1850. It is an old colonial style house with a chimney at each end. I have one fireplace. But the fireplace on the opposite end of the house has been covered over with drywall. The stonework goes from the basement to the 2nd floor. It's going to be a big job to restore it. I'm inspired. Thank you for this video.
One stone at a time my friend, one stone at a time.
@@logcabinlifestyle Yes, indeed. Just a little at a time and one day it will be completed. You’re fireplace is wonderful.
Thank you. I built half of it and then had to take a month off because it hurt me pretty bad. I took a vacation and then came back and hit it hard
@@logcabinlifestyle I bet it did. Those are big stones. Fortunately for me, all the stones are basically intact. I just have to have work done on the chimney and make sure the inside of the chimney is intact enough to hold up. I meant to say that the stonework goes from the basement to the attic. I really hope to be able to use it next year.
Fantastic!!! great job!!! LOVE that cabin!!!
I am a 71 year old retired mason who laid lots of stone. Everything I do is predicated by a bargaining session with the pain gods. Please use your head to save your back. I see all your very hard work and say this in the sincere hope that you will listen and heed. Could offer some criticism but will not. Usta hate knowitalls picking apart my work.. Like your mud and wish I had thought of the Hilti gun and chisel thing forty plus years ago. Well done, Hoss!
Man back hurts just watching but the outcome will be worth it and beautiful. This is my favorite house love watching the build, reminds me of my grandparents house that I grew up in, just something about those old houses and simplicity.
Very impressive. Your techniques and your approaches are so logical. I learned so much just watching you work man you’re a hard worker.
Thank you!
40 years later the flagstone veneer outside my Dad's cabin needed some attention. It's high altitude in the freeze and thaw Rockies. The mortar he used (which is fine inside) had started to sand out and errode away outside. After consulting some friends we decided to just use a water proofing on the mortar instead of a poly product so that it didn't change the look of the stone. So far 15 years later it's stopped the errosion!! Since the motar you're using is so tender you might want to do the same on the outside wall of your beautiful! fireplace. Excellent work!💜
Thanks for sharing this build with us!
It’s so great to see someone with a skill doing work for himself and not “the man”. Nice work my friend!
Just came across your video. This is so awesome!! Thank you for posting.
What an amazing piece of work. Highly highly impressed with your workmanship and commitment. Hope your back is alright.
So many comments are either negative or ignorant. You’re doing great. I can tell you know what you’re doing. God bless and great job!
Thank you so much! It’s been rough to say the least. People always assume the worst. God has his way of teaching us even through the bad. I will take what I can from it and move on.
love the 70's land yacht with the kayaks on it!
Beautiful work! After many hours of very hard labor you will be rewarded by a lifetime of memories of enjoying the fruits of that labor. I hope you enjoy many decades of warmth and hearth meals from your efforts!
Thank you much friend!
Really nice work! Question though, the arch seems like it should at least have one stone over the vertical side stones to support the weight in my mind....or am I over thinking it? Going to be doing a stone fireplace in spring myself, so input appreciated. Love what you are doing!
Was really hoping for some stone-by-stone commentary, rather than time lapse. But now I realize that you were your own cameraman! Looks great, though. Good job.
Very awesome good-looking fireplace so far can't wait for part 2
Wonderful 👍👍👍
I admire your diverse range of skills! As a 22-year-old (not from the States), I wanted to express my gratitude for the valuable insights that I have been gaining from your videos. It feels like watching a TV series or documentary, and through watching them every day, I have been discovering my life's purpose, desires, and aspirations. Kind regards!
On another note, I was curious about the construction of the smoke shelf. Did you install an iron base or use larger stones to create the space? I'm taking notes for future reference. 😄
I used large stones. The only iron is in the damper itself
Thank you for this comment too. It means so much to me.
Your work and the look on this fire place is perfect it is exactly what I think is what I would build if I could great workmanship and thought with it's design and build .
Very cool video this is very interesting I can’t wait to watch your progress
Thanks Christine! There’s lots of videos on my page and many more to come.
artisan extraordinaire
Couple of questions…1. Do you have any non-Timelapse videos of you cementing and placing the rocks in real time. 2. Videos of the outside all the way threw the loft to the top of the roof. 3. Videos of you adding the damper. 4. Videos of you adding the wooden hearth? Thanks. Great Craftsmanship!
No, I don’t have anything but what I posted. I didn’t know I was going to build a RUclips channel when I built this fireplace
"It's been two days and it look's like I got nothing done"...every mans' mantra. Tomorrow is a new day.
Just found this channel. Love what you’re doing.
Impressive and very inspirational. Thanks for sharing.
This has to be given an award for back breaking craftsmanship in the highest quality. Absolutely exceptional, excellent video. Impressive 100% Jerry didn’t you post video of the original log cabin and the fireplace inside it? It is unbelievable you are all self taught. Congratulations again and again.
It has a foundation in the basement, and is not built on the subfloor.
Wow! Great job man.
Thank you
You are gifted with such talents!
Wow. Amazing job. I would like to have a real fireplace in my house, but it's not easy to build, I wish he could do it for me. Lol. I am impressed with his talent and energy.
Beautiful work!
Awesome !
cool fab. thx for sharing.
That is a monster! I thought my fireplace was too large ...I love it!
I absolutely love the videos you have such a beautiful cabin looks so very cozy especially during the winter months it's picturesque you did an absolute amazing job on your cabin you take a bow because you are very skilled in your work!!!! Ty for making the video you have given people something to look forward too!
Thank you very much. I am so happy that so many love it!
I am glad you mentionied in the forward that there are foundations under that fireplace. It must weigh tonnes. I was watching, and it looked like you just laid it on top of a wooden floor. Anyway, great job, I am enjoying the video thanks.
Utterly stunning ❤
I am building a timber frame barn that will be our home. I hope to have it dried in by spring. I will then start tackling the floor to ceiling(28ft)
Thanks for the education!
I have fallen in love with the idea of living in a log cabin in Tennessee. Am pretty crafty with DIY projects but have never taken on a project like this one. Super impressed with your work. Makes me want to tackle more
Thanks man!! You can do it.
Beautiful work ! I'd rather have that then a modern mansion ! God Bless !!!
Thank you, and a God Bless back to you
Very impressive work sir. I admire your talents. Beautiful result.
A work of art!!! Hats off to Johnny Appleseed! You need some old school foot lathes and tools for decor. Reminds me of a house Roy Underhill would live in! Beautiful! Beautiful little town too. Maybe next September we will camp near town and visit.
That would be great! It is a great little town
Looks great!
Nice 👍
Just amazing work and looks so beautiful🤩 Thank you so much for sharing
Thank you!
What beautiful craftsmanship
Beautiful!
Incredible work wow
Only been watching 2 minutes and love it already!!!! you are awesome!!!
Thank you
I absolutely love that fireplace. I love cooking on a wood fire. I love the fact it has a swing arm that you can hook a pot on to do some wonderful soups and stews on. Yum. Nothing better than campfire stews.
Looks like it's shaping up great! Can't wait to see it completed and working. Another bonus perk for me: I was killing myself laughing at the chainsaw intermittently running in the background (outside.) Along with the video subject/content, it adds up to an absolutely pitch perfect "Red Green Show" vibe !! 🙂
Lots of videos on the channel of me using the fireplace. It works beautifully
@@logcabinlifestyle Yep I came specifically to see your fireplace build, but after this one I skipped ahead to a much more recent video (why you have the fireplace + cookstove together) It also gave me a big smile to see your full grown dog - you mentioned at one point in this video that you had just gotten your new puppy !!
Just couldn't resist pausing the video to comment on the "Red Green Show" angle, I'm still chuckling about that ...
Anyway thanks for the great content ! I'm considering building something like this myself, as part of an enclosed gazebo in our backyard. Very windy a lot of the time where we are, and I'm hoping for a way of enjoying a fire outside when it wouldn't be practical otherwise. Wintertime also !
Masterful work 👍
looks beautiful. I will follow, as I plan on building a cabin on my property in WV
Nice work on the FP. Looks good.
This is absolutely AWSOME! Thank you dear sir for your video!
Your very welcome
It’s beautiful!
Awesome craftsmanship. Just subscribed as I can't wait to see how this project proceeds.
Thank you
looks beautiful
Mad skills!
Real beautiful looking room
Super build! Just stumbled onto your channel and I see hours of future watching!
Awesome
It's a piece of art!
Wild man...doing that alone!
Nice job though..
Pretty sure that's a blacksmith hammer.
It could be, but if it is it worked beautifully
@the log cabin life style by Jerry Tyson Absolutely. Adapt and overcome!
it is so gorgeous.
Thank you!
What a beautiful fireplace it is stunning. Just joined your channel . I love your cabin too. Sending regards from Australia 🇦🇺 😊
Thank you and welcome!!
thats awesome man great job.
amazing!
Beautiful work! Truly inspiring
Thank you.
Looks well made to me.
AWESOME
Love the red Mercury.
You may think that lime mortar is weak, but there are thousands of castles in France, and the rest of Europe built of stone and lime mortar still standing after 200, 300 or even more years. Some of the wood might be water damaged leading to damage to the stone, but often they can be mended.
I agree with you. Weak only in the sense of its actual strength. It is the right mortar to be used with limestone or sandstone.
She’s a beauty
Thats some nice brikling right there 👌👌💪💪
I love fireplace chimney so much coz I love fire 🔥 especially in winter
