the log cabin life style by Jerry Tyson
Добавлен 10 май 2008
In the fall of 2019 I bought a log cabin that was originally built for the widow and her children of a man who died in the war of 1812 for $1000. It was In really bad shape. With no background in carpentry I was going to tackle tearing down and salvaging as much as possible to build a log cabin home on the property I bought and mover into when I was 16 years old. That’s 35 years ago. I didn’t plan on building a RUclips channel until after 2 years of building and friends talked me into it. So now I will finish out this cabin on RUclips and share as much as I can.

Thank You... Enjoying your videos while recovering from knee replacement..Doing ok 10 days out.. From N.E.Georgia.. Clayton.. Rabun County..will keep watching.. Appreciate your hard work.. 😊😊😊
Thank you for this video Jerry. This is solid gold information!
You are most welcome
Question: Could you please tell me the stone type that your fireplace is? Thanks, I did watch both videos of you building it.
Wich state is this cabin in ?
Ohio
A good therapy for when you go through a divorce is indeed to be alone in a cabin working on expanding it or doing things to improve the off grid quality of living. I am from PR, but had an off-grid cabin in Perú.
I like those. I like that it does not cast a shadow on the bottom.
That was their big selling point
Does your open fireplace ever crackle and shoot embers out onto the floor? 😬
It really depends on the wood. The absolute worst for popping is the real dry pine, but saying that it’s my favorite as long as I’m not cooking over it
What is your floor made out of before you put the stone on it?
In front of the fireplace is concrete and to the left where the cook stove is now is wood subfloor
Absolutely Beautiful ❤
So the answer in 5seconds, is use only if its very dry or as kindling
The answer in 5 seconds would be that creosote water not pine. Treat pine like any other wood.
From the Netherlands. Den Haag. Your friends did you, and us viewers a big favour. Love your video s. I remember that you love to hear from people all around the the States cities, other countries... congrats... you made it happen. 👍👍👍👍 Looking forward to more vids. What supports the weight of the fireplace underneath the cabin? Is it just on the ground?
No it’s not on the ground. It has a full basement and a footer
I grew up in a 1775 ocean view cape in Maine. No insulation, it was frigid. It had a big open fireplace and we used a vintage cookstove, and a vintage Vermont Castings woodstove. When all were going, it was so nice. I got a Woodstock Ideal Steel as a new overnight stove. I would love to get a Kitchen Queen 480 or something with a good sized firebox on my other chimney in the kitchen. I grew up heating the kitchen with a porcelain bodied, cast iron top Home Comfort wood cookstove. I love stoves with round pot holes. Many of the modern cookstoves are not made this way.
The rotating waffle iron? What brand is it?
No brand marks on it
I wish I had house exactly like yours 👍
If you would braise most of your meats, make baked beans, cassoulets, chili, stew, well the possibilities are endless, you would make better use of your cookstove. Pot roast (chuck, arm, or blade), sauerbraten, pork shoulder, pork ribs on a bed of sauerkraut, a half ham, scalloped potatoes, soup of almost any kind-check the channel Sip and Feast for braisable stuff.
Perfect place for me! ❤
Interesting project. One thing is for sure Jerry - you will have enough wood shavings for a long time for your stove and fireplace.
its great id live in a place like that
This is why I don't understand why people split their wood as they need it! Everything we have at our camp is split and at least 1-2years seasoned. We burn pine and spruce in our fireplace but its been split and dry for at least 3 years. Even then we only use it when were first lighting a fire or relighting in the night. One or two smaller pieces of pine or spruce on the hot coals and three or four peices of hardwood.
You understand😀
this video was so much better than I expected thank you. about to restore and install our own small potbelly.
Thank you, Jerry. I enjoyed your video
Loved this Jerry! Thanks for sharing!
Wow ... ambitious
Such an amazing video. Thanks for sharing the process!
Good episode
Holly molly, so many skillets for one person. There are plenty to supplyAn entire amish village 😮😮
This was great and really interesting! Really enjoyed the video and project! Thank you for sharing with us Jerry!
Last December a Frank Lloyd Wright sprite sculpture in a garden of an Arizona hotel fell over, killing an 8 yr old. I know nutcrackers part of Xmas scene but need to anchor all the pieces. So heavy like a chainsaw wooden 🐻 bear statue. You may explain safety around crowds later on...but that's my instant reaction. 😱 I have a collection of four foot vinyl child Masterpiece dolls from Germany. 5 of them ha ha. Lifesize is really popular for seasonal displays...but best to separate maybe by a picket fence or restructure like a tiered cake with dowels (rebar? 4 nutcrackers) all the way through 🍍hospitality& fun & no medics🎨🌲🐀
Bravo Jerry! Your talent is exquisite .
Hey Jerry! It's Lisa and Brandon from Struthers! Really cool! Gave me the idea of you creating large angels as guardians to homes. Like that fit the Book of Revelation description and prayed over for family protection. ❤
Great video Jerry. I used to do woodworking many a year ago. Twas reminiscing about my own time in the shop while watching it. Only thing I used a lathe for in my woodworking was for tiny spindles for stairs in a dollhouse. They turned out surprisingly well. Like you, prior to that, I never used a lathe before. Sometimes when you jump into something you haven't done before, you can be pleasantly surprised. I also just appreciate seeing your cabin every time you put up a video. There's something different about your cabin than others I've seen. It's somehow more authentic and relaxing and "old school" for lack of a better word. It gives off a vibe of never wanting to leave.
Great job!
Jerry they will be amazing when you are able to paint them this summer!!! Be Blessed 😉
Future nobel peace prize(not starting forest fires) woodworker. 🎉
A candle tree is it fir?😊
I enjoy your videos. I play cards, and crafts, and read in the winter. What if you built furniture?
You have the most beautiful cabin
Thank you Jerry for sharing the birth of those ☺️🙃🥰 adorable Nutcrackers and even better showing the display of the precious gifts that God bestows upon you to overcome the things that world while he moves us through our VERY GROWTHFUL JOURNEY ❤❤❤
How do you get upstairs?
The ladder
A counter weight lever on a Nutcracker catapults him up to the loft. 😅
How is your family? Staying warm.
We are all good. Yes, so far so good
regardless of charcoal that's an incredibly good looking oven
Who built the pizza oven? I’d like to see more of it and more about its construction! It’s a beauty
