100% agree and came to the comment section to say the same thing! I don't know if I am alone in this thought, but to me, the sounds of the work itself are the real music that I want to hear. The sawing, chopping, hammering playing over a backdrop of ambient natural noise. Music to my ears.

I've never actually seen someone use a template for the notching. Makes sense. Those logs are going to fit so tightly together. I've never seen a chainsaw used as a sander either.
I was in central B.C..........we used a chainsaw for cuts down to a 1/8th of an inch (building a house)....only used a skill saw for trusses and a table saw for cabinets ...50% chain saw, 30% table saw 10% chop saw and 08% skill saw and 2% jig saw!

If you have a chainsaw and a log saddle jig then just use the chainsaw and clean up the saddle. Why you are using an ax makes absolutely no sense at all

As a qualified machinist with toolmaking the first thing I personally would do would be to make a holesaw to suit, then making a suitable jig, drill these reliefs in two logs at once. Cleaner Finnishes, closer fits, less machining time and a heck of a lot safer without any variation.

Would work with lathe turned logs and is done with them, but by lathe turning logs, you lose some important properties of the logs. If the logs are not lathe turned into uniform diameter, like in this video they are not, then good luck with your system...
Your jig for the saddles only work if the logs are uniform .. and they never are unless you work for a company who builds them professionally but great video nonetheless
Why are you cutting the long groove on the top of the log? Doesn’t that cause water to run down the walls and pool in the groove. Im thinking the groove should be on the bottoms to ensure no water can get in.
More efficient to cut logs to 2×10 and lay them up. It's tighter and more easily insulated. Have a portable sawmill stop by and build your cabin better for half the price.
That template idea is neat but it doesn’t work unless you have perfectly symmetrical logs to work with, otherwise your overlap would be true to the underlying log

I have never built a log cabin so this may be an ignorant question. Why did you put the groove on the top of the log rather than on the bottom? Won't water seep in and pool in the groove since it is cupped upwards?
I am not going to lie I am disappointed that they show them peeling logs then show them marking manufactured logs (rounded & scribed) with the template.
@@DL101ca if this was a log home manufacturer doing this, the grass you saw was probably in their yard. Each log for the building is exact cut and the home assembled in the yard, then taken apart and shipped to the buyers lot. I use to see this alot in WI at a few log home manufacturers.
It's nice the tree gods make all the trees the same diameter so your juig fits exactly. In my part of the world the tree gods need a jolly stern talking to.
I see many negative comments here. Although your comment is more of asking if the work could be done easier or more efficient. Which in my opinion is much more helpful than a bunch of egotistical people who think there is only one way to do something. If you are from alaska you should know there are many ways to trap, hunt, build, and flat out survive in the wild. I know a guy who lived there 25 plus years as a wild life biologist. He is good at teaching people what he knows. See when you can build a cabin what ever way you think is the right way great for you! But do you have what it takes to effectively teach other people how to build the same quality work as your self? One thing to be capable of something, but teaching it is on a whole other level. All you shit talkers should surround yourself with people who are above your skill level and learn something maybe you will be HUMBLED
It's amazing, how you are able to choose what tree, how to pull the log with simple l e machine, and not get hurt or splinters on your hand, legs . I am totally amazed.
What is " chinking"? What is it made of? Do you make it naturally from the environment or you get it from hardware store. Would it prevent leakage. What do you use to prevent insects from attacking your log cabin. I sorry if I'm asking many questions. Our forefathers , build log cabins differently. I'm just interested.
Hey i have a question for you why does everyone skin the logs for and not keep the skin on ?? When the log is a tree with roots doesn't the skin protect the tree when it rains wouldn't leaving the tree skin be a good thing?? Just wondering.
Its possibly because the bark would leave too many gaps in the house. Just looked it up, bugs live under the bark and a part of the bark can hollow out and become a breeding ground.

Why would you not cut a bunch of straight lines down to the blue outline? Then you could chip them out much faster and cleaner.

I would think a 2 inch timber framing chisel would be easier \ more precise than using the axe to finish what the power saw couldn't.
This is great, but my logs are not all from a lincoln log kit turned to a perfect consistent diameter with that nice cope right down the side.
Do you put any type of sealer or some type of covering to keep the outside weather out and the heat inside during cold and raining seasons.

They're building it upside down, they will flip it once finished. Notice there's no foundation either, the roof will be attached there.

They seal the gaps. I would be more worried about footings, as I saw grass underneath the logs.

Depending on your budget and intended use , chinking can be moss, mud , clay, or various insulation or spray foams can also be purchased

Bark traps moisture and bugs. The milling and shaping process also removes the bark as a first step.
If you unstuck that and restack it upside down, your laps will actually shed water, which night be better?..

It was smart to make that box but obviously the tree would have to be within the right dimension. What dimension are the trees you selected?
Trees were milled to the same dimensions, they were not natural size.
