I'VE BEEN A VET FOR A FULL YEAR 🫶 how crazy is that?!? Here are some of the most important things I learned in my first year out in practice! Feel free to ask any questions down below or if you have any video suggestions, let me know!
Hi Amanda, Wanted to write about how much I've looked up to you since I was at UoG doing my undergrad! Your videos inspired me lots during those rough pre-vet years and they still do, now that I am in my first year at the OVC! Whooh, it's been quite the semester already and I'm glad to see your take on different kinds of mentorship and how being out of vet school has been going for you. Thank you for sharing your experiences!
I'm in my last year of high school, and it's exciting being able to finally start taking steps towards pursuing a career in vet med. I know there's a long road ahead, but I can't wait to get started! Thank you for the videos you've been putting out, there's a very small number of Canadian veterinary RUclipsrs out there and your videos have been so helpful in clearing things up!
Recently changed country's and started in a new practice (I'm 2 years out of school now) and my mental health declined a lot... I've been struggling, and you're videos helped. Thank you for taking the time to make them!
Going into my first year at OVC this fall and I can't tell you how much your videos have helped me and made me excited about this journey! Congratulations on this milestone!! :)
4th year vet student here! I would love to get your opinion on mentorship! I would also be interested in reading your templates so that I can start making my own!
I love templates, they make clinical note taking so effortless and efficient ^_^ Would love if you could share yours... Proud of all veterinarians and vet staff
Have you found any regret/burnout/compassion fatigue? I'm working as a tech assistant rn at a vet ER while working on finishing my undergrad, and i feel quite fearful I guess? Some of the doctor and techs I work with seem to be so unhappy, and I constantly see posts on reddit and social media about burnout, the pay, and people leavivng the field, and it makes it hard to want to even work as an assistant at times. After getting a bad cat bite this weekend and seeing how differently a human ER works in comparison, I wonder if the risk is worth it and if I am going in the right direction...
I may have missed this in another video but I have a question. How did you study when you were still in vet school after getting a puppy? I will be thankful if you share some tips and tricks. I am in vet school too. Just finished my 3rd year out of a 5.5 year program. We (my husband and I, I am around 8-9 years older than my colleagues) got a puppy in April and studying was impossible with her. I had so little time for anything that I fall behind in all subjests and as a result I failed most of my final exams. This semester I will drop out as I won't be accepted back with this many failed exams. I will study and retake them, hopefully I will pass this time so I will be able to enroll again in 2025. But I really wonder how did you do it all with a pup? Obviously it is possible, you did amazing!
@@Writingfnafcat-1983vr definately not my smartest decision. But we are first time owners (I haven't had any pets growing up either) and obviously I didn't know what to expect.
My situation was a little different where the initial plan was I was going to have another vet with me until I felt comfortable. We ended up being short staffed so I kinda got thrown into Saturdays on my own after 2ish months but it ended up working out fine! I probably would have kept a vet with me for a lot longer, more so as a lack of confidence thing, but have to just bite the bullet and get through a shift on my own made me realize that I was actually more comfortable than I realized. I always had (and still do to this day) have my mentor on speed dial that I can call if I ever get stuck when I'm by myself which made the whole thing more comfortable as well!
@@yourvetamanda Tomorrow is literally day 4 of being a vet for me lol. But they mentioned starting solo Saturdays in September with one hour appts and my mentor on speed dial. It sounds so scary 🥹 but at the same time it might help if they push me to fly a little 😁.
Amanda, I really, really want to be a vet, it's been my dream for as long as I can remember. what would you suggest as some good first steps towards fulfilling that dream at my age now, since I'm only twelve. I don't want to feel like I'm just sitting here, with a dream, but doing nothing to move closer towards accomplishing it. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Me too but I'm 13 😅 I'm nowhere near being a vet but probably just study hard (but not too hard!) and try to get actual books on animals anatomy and stuff to get a feel for how vet school would be like
For now, the best you can do is just watch some vet-based videos to figure out if this is what you want to do. Also, if you can, volunteer at animal shelters or animal sanctuaries. I did about 140 hours of volunteering and really enjoyed it! Once you get into high school, check to see if your school offers a Co-Ops class. I took one in grade 11 and I got to spend 2.5 hours every school day at a vet clinic with the vets for a full semester. And this counted as 2 classes. Sadly there's not too much you can do at your age. Just explore your interests, learn about vet-based stuff if you want, get good marks in grades 10-12 and volunteer. Good luck!
@@lemonlizard1 thank you! I am currently volunteering at a shelter, and I really enjoy it. I am homeschooled, but once I get into highschool I may be able to do something like dule enrolling. We will see when the time comes for me to be in highschool. I appreciate your advice! 😊
@@yourvetamanda good stuff! Be careful. Fish keeping is an addictive hobby. Google MTS. Before you know it you’ll have a fish room with 10 aquariums, even when you swore you’d only have 1

هل واجهتي صعوبة في دراستك للط البيطري ؟
Mind if I ask how old you are??? I’m almost 24 and want to go back to school to a vet, since I dropped out of college during covid
I'm 27 now but graduated vet school at 26!
It would do you well and successful to dive into nutrition
