    As a fellow vet tech I get the question from people A LOT “Oh you’re a vet tech, are you studying to become a veterinarian?” and my answer is NOPE. And it’s not because I don’t wanna go through schooling or I don’t think I am capable, it’s simply because I LOVE being a technician/vet assistant. It is so hands on with all the technical things and it’s an EXTREMELY important role in vet med. I love it so much and am 100% content with my position as a vet tech.

I now have 3 teenagers, and I am a stay at home Mom. Definitely still more drama at the two veterinary practices I worked at, but it was good training to deal with teenagers 😉😉😉. I am so glad I found your channel! I can relate to Ruba's story. I'm a RN and have been so for going on 5 years, but I've recently reached out to my local Humane Society to volunteer cause I'm not sure I really want to be a nurse. I wonder if I made the right choice in choosing nursing, since I haven't loved most of nursing and hospital politics for most of my career, so I'm hoping in volunteering I can see if this would be a better route.

I've been set on a large animal veterinarian for years but my parents are pushing for vet tech because they said that with all the insurances, licenses, and school debt you still make the same amount of money but I've seen that that's not the case. So I need some influence or advice.

      If you become a technician, you can always go on and become a doctor afterwards, especially if you find you love the field and enjoy studying. The tech experiences will help you become a better doctor in the long run. But if you invest all the time and money that it takes to become a vet doctor and then don't like it, you'll really be stuck. That's my perspective :)

    • @simplecontinuous2343
      @simplecontinuous2343 4 года назад

      Staralexis58 Yt this depends on the state. We are trying to move away from on the job training to requiring a formal education. Keep an eye on NAVTA and AVMA articles regarding this! As of right now some states allow vet assistants/on the job technicians to do the same things as an RVT/CVT/LVT. So some places allow you to do the job without schooling. However, a lot of people are starting to advocate for attending an AVMA accredited vet tech program, graduating, and taking your necessary boards.

    it's interesting to see how different schools are in different countries. In the Netherlands there are a few educations to be a vet technician and they're all really different. we have a lot of internships in clinics, a lot of tests to make before we graduate. it's a 4 year education in college and not a lot of people are going to work as a vet tech. most of the students do the education and learn to become something else like a veterinarian or something completely different.

      glotheworm I actually agree with it, for sure believe the team can work better when everyone is educated. Even for people like myself get Into the field to become doctors, you don’t have to be a Vet Tech, you could work as a vet assistant/ kennel/ volunteer and get experience that way! For sure a great topic! Thank you for the idea!!!

    So you became a vettech by being cross trained? I'm asking because I'm becoming a vettech in Germany and I want to move to the states in the future, but all I know is, that my 3y. apprenticeship isn't 'accepted' in the states... I'm struggling with that for so long now.. 🙄

    • @simplecontinuous2343
      @simplecontinuous2343 4 года назад

      Maritschke this depends on the state. We are trying to move away from on the job training to requiring a formal education. Keep an eye on NAVTA and AVMA articles regarding this! As of right now some states allow vet assistants/on the job technicians to do the same things as an RVT/CVT/LVT.

    • @simplecontinuous2343
      @simplecontinuous2343 4 года назад

      Arlettbeauty124 if you want to be a vet tech, you can go straight to a vet tech program. If you want to be a veterinarian, it’s actually not recommended to go to vet tech school (unless you’re taking years off to get finances in order) because it’s extra money and most vet programs don’t count vet tech courses towards your vet school application prerequisites. So usually vet school applicants (pre-vets), will pursue a bachelors degree in biology, animal science, etc. (but it can be in anything as long as you get those prerequisites!) and then apply.

    I intuitively turned down a preschool teaching assistant offer to pursue dog walking and becoming a vet tech instead... it almost sounds ridiculous typing it out. I am still studying ECED, but now I am actually gaining experience in what I aim to start working towards, instead of studying ECED and working on the product versus the process, which could look like getting myself experience working at a center. When it came down to it, after applying for so many positions and getting a few offers... I turned them all down, because I wanted to spend my time with animals instead of children (sorry little ones)
    I think I led with my gut on this one and that it wasn't an impulse, but also maybe it was

    What's the difference between a vet tech and a veterinarian? And is there such a thing as a vet nurse?

    • @simplecontinuous2343
      @simplecontinuous2343 4 года назад +1

      Alondra Cardenas vet techs are essentially vet nurses! They do the same (and much more!). They also do dental cleaning, take radiographs, monitor anesthesia, etc.
      The legal differences between a veterinarian and vet tech is that only veterinarians can do surgery, diagnose, and prescribe medications. Otherwise, they can do similar things. I would say though that vets work with clients a lot more than vet techs; working with figuring out treatment plans, etc.
