I learn this in school they have a whole movie about it’s called hotel Rwanda and Paul Rusesabagina wrote a book called the ordinary man when I read the book and watch the movie it’s was really sad like 800,000,000 thousand tutuis were slaughtered even the president was killed by tutuis rebels. But when I was watching the movie in class the amount of ignorance that was around was in sain my classmate did not know anything about Rwanda they were asking these dumb questions

I briefly dated a man who was a survivor. He had the scars on his neck from where they cut him open and left him to die. They murdered his family. The French UN came and rescued him and adopted him out to a family in France. He had the best attitude. Optimistic guy and told me to never be angry at the world and always be grateful. Very humbled to have met someone like him.

The French UN,the French never had any UN soldiers in the genocide against the Tutsi they fought alongside and backed the Hutu Government that was responsible for the Genocide,it goes as far as French soldiers raping Tutsi women,only Belgium and other nations had soldiers in the UN and even they left people to die,the French are what to Rwandan Tutsi,what The Nazi are to Jews,but more with more cruel methods of killing

Its completely heartbreaking, they were animals 😢 this is the worse thing in modern history,, its frightening to think it only happened a short while ago, i remember as a child the british soilders drove into my neighbour in the 80s and just shot everyone they could dead, innocent citizens, because they were irish, women, children, the local priest, i remmeber thinking how can this happen, now? Its not the 1800s its not 'old times' im not trying to compare the 2, but just unbelievable how governments to this day can do this, look at north korea now its 2021!! My current girlfriend lived through this event. While I was safe in the US listening to Nirvana and complaining about my teachers at school. I’m constantly blown away at how positive and hopeful she is with life. She’s amazing.

Yes, there are cases of children who laid within piles of bodies for days in churches, too scared to get off, and then eventually will get up and scour for food, for anything at night and then remain hidden in the addict or some hiding place. There is even a case of siblings who survived the genocide sitting in stalls in a public restroom with a radio.

This drew tears from my eyes. Am in my early sixties and witnessed this evil in Nigeria between 1966 and 1970 - people being hunted down and killed because of their tribe. God. When will all this end.
I remember my parents talking to me about this. They did not experience it as badly as many others, but it affected them more economically than physically. BUT.... I have heard from many others who lived it, and I just can't imagine it. Unfortunately, i fear it will happen again (seeing what's happening now). God forbid it.

I couldn’t even begin to try to imagine how terrifying and traumatic this was for her and everyone else that had to go through this.

How these survivors manage to narrate what happened for over one minute without breaking down surprises me. Listening to them for few seconds alone makes my eyes teary. And To think she experienced all these as a 13yrd breaks my heart.
She has probably narrated to herself a million times while internalising the pain.
The fact that she cries at the end shows she is healing. Not there yet but the scars will always be there.

Its called dissociation common with PTSD, trauma etc. you separate from the emotions in the moment in order to perform a task/achieve a goal or simply survive. There is hope with time, support, therapy, healing is possible 💕💕

Im glad she cried coz i know she still have tears left. I hope soon she will stop feeling guilty for survive but her parents and siblings were not.
They should be a national initiative to test the DNA of all the survivors, especially young orphans who don't know anything about their origin. If they was like a database of all those DNA, people would find their long lost relatives and find the remains of the people they lost, this would tremendously alleviate the pain and loneliness many survivors had and still live with in the aftermath of the genocide against the Tutsi.

That database would serve as a two edged sword. The otherside being a database that would tell how many are still alive and where they are via their address for mail.
There are geneticists in Bosnia who are working on a DNA database in order to help people find their family members in mass graves.
It is 5.01 a.m. in the morning. I listened to this story before but I am listening to it again. Rwanda has gone through a genocide, this fine young lady has gone it in a personal way. Seeing the dead even loosing her love ones is not something ones treats as a bad dream. It is a reality. Then one begs the question, How does all this originates? It started in someone's mind.
As a Diaspora, I keep wondering why the slave trade? How did our fore parents ended up in the millions on foreign soils? There are a few things to consider. Who was responsible for delivering the the families to the traders? What about the wealth they left behind? For the survivors, now refers to as Diaspora, is there some recordings back in Africa to help us recover from the trauma left in the records of traders? Our family names are gone. Our family lands are gone. The chiefs are still controlling the people. It can happen again for the people are not free.
When people turn away from the Almighty God to tribalism, God will allow atrocity in their lives. So our first step must be to get right with God. If God is leading then there is nothing to fear. But leaving freedom to go back into tribalism is the wrong move.

I had two friends in my neighborhood who survived this as children. They came to the US as children from Rwanda. I knew they came here without their biological parents and were adopted by a whites family. I knew why they came but never asked them about it. They were such nice kids and I’m sure they are beautiful people as adults.
I cried with you my dear sister! I pray for your healing. I went through similar situations for years In Liberia and the last war I was in before coming to the states was in April 6, 1996. Lots of people died on that day and many days that followed. I was fortunate to come to the U.S. in 1997. I didn’t go to therapy or got any counseling. I went right to school literally two days after I got to the states. I still remembered some killings that I saw as a child and even my father was murdered. The sad part is we don’t know where he was murdered so there is no grave site. My siblings and I do not have any closure. I had to find some closure for myself in 2022. You are in my prayers my dear sisters and brothers from Rwanda 🇷🇼 ❤

Wake up! Have you seen the world? What kind of "god" would ALLOW that if he had the power to stop it? Not to mention, the god in the bible KILLS children... more than one occasion.
God did a very sad job allowing any of these people to suffer these trageties. One dead, or harmed person is too much when god is supposed to be watching. God gets no credit for her survival.

What an incredible woman. Her story is heartbreaking, yet filled with hope. Within the most horrific experiences, love heals. Throughout the whole interview, I kept thinking, "I hope she has children" That kind of love helps heal the memories of her loss, and brings happiness back into her life. I was so happy to hear that she is a mom.
This same thing happened to my father's family
When the Nigerian War started from Kano state (Northern Nigeria), over 30,000 igbos were killed. My grandfather was in Kano for military work. During the killings (both civilians and military men were being killed), my grandfather had an hausa friend who hid him inside a little hole he could dug in that period till dawn. So he told my grandfather that when he is leaving Kano the next day, he should say some certain words in hausa (it took him 30mins to memorised that) and that was what he used to escape Kano.
He met his family in Enugu (our home town) and set out holes with grasses incase the Nigerian soldiers decides to go through people homes to kill igbos.
For my mother side, my grandfather got separated from his children from Ibadan (he was an engineer working on a rail project in Ibadan back then). My mother told us that as they were leaving, there are checkpoints where they will ask you if you are Biafra, if they see a hint of them, every body in that vehicle will be killed. In my mom's family there are 11 children with my mom being the 4th youngest (7th child ) so the last 5 youngest siblings were placed in each large baskets with clothes and a little grass at the top to look like the food are for cows (she said it was suffocating but she had to hold on like her life depends on it) and stayed there until they left Ibadan to Abia. Her 2 elder sisters at that time had to use their little yoruba to save us. When they got there. They had an uncle that housed them for a little period of that but one faithful night, they heard the soldiers jet coming (and once you hear that, you have to leave your house or that vicinity and hide in the Bush (even the Bush according to her wasn't safe but it was better than staying in a house that will be bombed) so they will lay low, lights off and no noise except the sound of bombs (the Nigerian soldiers do this every single night).
When they hear that the Nigerian soldiers are coming that when my mother would cry because she hated water. So the adults carry any child they can and across the Oji River, like her family, they are always the first to go there cause their house was among the first 5, and hide in between the water plants if the Nigerian soldiers came early so that they don't get spotted easily or cross to the other side and stay low on the tall grasses. There was even a time my mother almost lost her immediate elder sister when she was sent out to give their uncle (who shielded them when they got to Abia) something like a letter but with items wrapped in a cloth. My aunt said that at the moment, when she heard the jets sound, she laid low and covered her ears cause she knew they were about to bomb. Just then, from a distant, she saw her uncle's house bombed. He wasn't inside but his old parents and sick wife were and that was how they were killed. Once the jets left, nothing told my aunt not to run (cause if you run, you are likely to get bombed cause they will see your movement and attack you). It was then that my mother's eldest sister (mind you, my mom was just 8 when the war broke out) decided enough was enough, she had to tag with a Kanuri friend (who is a northern) and tried to find ways to protect her family from attacks. She did succeed but after her last visit to the house (she brought lots of food that could last them for 5 months) she never came back. My mother thought that it was either they knew she was Igbo and got killed or she was married off. Her family don't know till this day) and it was her last meeting before the war ended exactly 5 months after.

I was probably 7 when this happened and that’s all we could see on TV. For weeks bodies and parts ended up on our shores and were buried in mass graves. I remember crying and asking my parents why no one could help them. 😢

I feel bad thinking about what she had to go through, because here I am, an American living in America, never experienced anything nearly as bad and see my fellow neighbors and myself complain about the smallest of things. This just opened my eyes and made me thankful for the small things in life. She is so brave, may God heal her and bless her
People of every nation and ethnic group and color are so beautiful. Together, we all look like a beautiful bouquet of flowers. And each one has something to contribute, if allowed to. Love is so much better than hate. At the end of the genocide, what was accomplished?

You missed the point. It’ll never go away. It’s in her memories. The best you can do is LISTEN to your friends. Just listen and say you can’t imagine how horrible it must’ve been because you can’t. When you and I have problems just think about how talking to a friend helps. Saying it out loud helps.

Yes talk about the genocide while ignoring the war crimes, mass killings and rape inflicted on the Hutus by the rpf (who incidentally are now in charge of rewanda after winning the civil war) not saying that we shouldn’t talk about this horrific genocide just trying to explain that this was not tue only evil thing done at that time.

@@saradeen3984 No What happened in Somalia was not a genocide, all the warring factions had weapons and fought against each other. Somalis are majority one ethnic group, unlike Rwanda where one ethnic group wanted to irradicate the other. Where have you been? I thought the world new that somalis are the only homogenous group that have one country to themselves.

Siad Barre and other warlords, pitted many tribal and ethnic groups against each other to keep his control over Northern regions of Somalia. There are well documented genocidal policies towards certain clans and tribes, rape and sexual violence was commonplace used as weapons of war. Someone went to my high school years ago before I graduated. He explained his story, it was really impactful on me. I still think about that man.
The pain and sadness were tugging at my chest while you were speaking. as a child and seeing all those bodies around you and then wondering where your parents were, not knowing but just assuming they were dead, that is heart wrenching. You will never ever forget anything you saw regardless of how long you live....maybe they should have called your relatives and send them for counselling also. God continue to strengthened you.

I feel for you my sister. I am from Kagera,Tanzania. So we are very near neighbours. Yes I remember seeing dead bodies floating in Kagera river. These were hard times, if we felt I can’t even imagine the feeling you had. I did go to the camp Benaco/ Rulenge, I was you with my Dad but no too young to not understand what happened. I am really sorry. This is why I have always told my country men cherish the peace we are enjoying now.

At that time, around 1994-1996, there was alot of fish in lake Victoria. Fish was so cheap. I was so young, but I can vividly remember. My family hosted some Jehovah's witness from Rwanda. The stories they told us are still imprinted on my mind to this very day. How can I forget them? I also have this profound dislike violent movies. Even the slightest violence. How people's hearts can become so callous! But what good can we expect from a world ruled by Satan?

I watched all movies about Rwanda genocide , I was 4 years old when it happened , but couple of years later, I remember few pictures from a magazine my father had , which had tarrying picture , a skull on a stick , rotten inflated bodies , and I couldn't forget it since then , that 2 pages from the magazine are still in my head . but at least I feel a little proud of my country soldiers who were there " Tunisia " who stayed with Colonel Dallaire, and he praised them in their book " Shake hands with the Devil " .
Shame to you who refused to help wounded children ! it is said in this painfull testimony : we saw a french military convey ; someone pleaded with them to rescue us but they refused!!! That was the tragedy of RWANDA : the silence or slumber of the international community !!! THEY JUST REFUSED TO HELP WHEN HELP WAS NEEDED.
You can't expect help from your oppressor. It's an important survival lesson to be learned.

@Marty Magpie But it’s the Europeans whom started this whole situation in the first place . If they did not occupy and divide the two tribes of Rwanda this would not have happened. So they should have helped since they were the cause. And I’m referring to the Europeans country that occupied Rwanda.
Black people are ALWAYS too dependent on those who HATE them to help them. That doesn't make sense. Until you learn how to SAVE YOURSELVES and turn back to repentance and loving one another, NOTHING will change.
In fact...Europeans were just defending their own interest in Africa .
After listening to her story I was struggling to sleep, I started praying every hour,my tears rolling, killing other people? Including children? So sad

I remember me and my friends watching the movie "Sometime in April" this movied potrayed what happend in Rwanda that year..I remember the silence in the room while the movie was on followed by loud cry as we couldn't hold emotions any longer. You can't watch what that movie and not cry. Watching her interview in 2021 im still crying
My God! Did anyone else have to hit the pause button and just try to compose yourself? I'm sitting at work and am about to bawl like a suckling. This woman's courage and complete lack of bitterness - WOW! As a human - I am both utterly disgusted at the atrocities we can commit and in absolute awe of our ability to reach new heights , to heal, to grow and to forgive. She is a beautiful person, pray there is nothing but happiness in her life and that of her family.

In my life I've been to Rwanda only once
By the time the genocide happened almost all my family was already in Uganda congo. They left rwanda in 59.
When I listen to these stories.

I cried listening to her. My parents were once in a similar tribal conflict between the Konkombas and the Nanumba's in Northern Ghana while on duty as a Nurse. Tribal surpimacy is a big problem in African society. I am sad to hear what you went through. God bless you and pray that you locate your other siblings.

Its happening already in South Africa 🇿🇦. First genocide against foreign africans many have died, most recently south africans of Indian descent and now there is tension between Xhosa and Zulu tribes the government is denying it to outside world

Thank you for telling your story. I am from Ireland but have spent a good bit of time in Uganda and when there I felt the need to travel to Rwanda to pay my respects to the people who lost their lives in the genocide. I visited the mass graves and memorial sites. It was a very moving and humbling experience for me. God Bless xxx

Sorry for her loss. Thank you for sharing your story. I left with my family a year before the genocide broke out. I can understand your survivor's guilt I think it's important that we live our lives to the fullest in honor of those who weren't so fortunate. Congratulations and blessings on your child. May the rest of your life be filled with tremendous joy and know that you are not alone in your plight and that your family is with you in spirit. There is a genocide survivor in Germany who is a therapist who specializes in PTSD. Her name is Ester Mujawayo-Keiner. She founded AVEGA She may be a good resource for you and other survivors since she really knows and understands what you guys went through.
