As a young singer just starting out as soloist with Duke Ellington in his Sacred concerts, I couldn't have been more pleased to have such a gifted and generous talented singer to learn from! Your unselfish spirit I will always treasure! May you rest with God's angels! You will remain in my heart!
Young? Starting out? Alice Babbs was an established Swedish vidette at the time. And her high octaves that Duke had in mind when he wrote that jazz oratorio still send me.
I think Russel Procope is one of the most underrated clarinet players of all times in jazz history... he is one of my favourites, together with Buddy De Franco, Pee Wee Russel and Barney Bigard ... Great tone, excellent tecnique, good vibrato and excellent glissando... Russel procope had all these gifts... thank you Russel !
I, have the utmost Respect For Duke Ellington. He, alone was a Force in American / Black Music ,a True composer for the Centuries. Why, did they not choose more Black singers and choir. He ,certainly knew how to break thru the color barriers and experienced plenty of success with it. Duke was a very smart Eloquent Man...
@Ruben Greenberg OH wow. I always heard. He is my grandfather's younger brother. Always heard story's about him from my granddad. He showed me pictures. I have a pic of them sitting together laying around somewhere.
@@williamprocope9648 He was one of a kind! -an artist of great dignity and intelligence. I met him when I was a teenager and there has always been a place in my heat for him ever since.
Em 3:56, se percebe toda classe e postura do grande Russel Procope ao terminar seu solo e cumprimentar Alice Babs ao sair, isso é uma elegância que só os grandes músicos tem.
I was sound engineer at Granada Chelsea at Nine. Lovely person. Go chase a rainbow. Always remembered. Is there anyone out there. Guess you're all dead. Don Thompson!
With all due respect for the great female jazz singers, but this fantastic Swedish girl can sing Ella, Billie, Anita and Sarah under the table any day!
Alice Babs' singing sends chills up my spine and brings tears to my eyes. She was loved by all the members of the Duke's band.
She was absolutely unique and perfect for this awesome work of Duke Ellington.

Extraordinary artist and voice - never too late to discover an angel like Alice.
So true I never heard of her until a week ago when I was browsing RUclips looking for versions of "Hot Toddy". Go figure.

Procope had a great career with Fletcher Henderson and the John Kirbysextet before he joint Ellington in 1945 up till 1974
Listen to silk lace
@@AndreNorbim The soloist on Silk Lace was Jimmy Hamilton, not Russell Procope
Duke's soloists had taste, just the right amount of everything. Procope for example!
What an amazing voice. Beautiful!

His choices were based on ability, not race. As it should be.
@@garypatton1749 He wrote much of that oratorio with her high octave skills in mind.
Une sublime voix, cette tessiture m'ébaubi profondément.
Merci Alice
Alice Babs was a truly great musiciam and singer. What beauty!
Why isn't this song more popular?! Like, everyone's heard of Come Sunday, but none has heard of Almighty God.
L.I.P. Uncle Russell
I knew your uncle: what a kind, funny, articulate man.
