Ahhhh weight. The amount of energy, emotion and time we put into thinking about our weight and the roll on effects it has on us (health, clothes, appearance), is staggering. Imagine if we never had those thoughts and what we could accomplish with that wasted time and energy!

I think it’s important to share these feelings as this resonates with so many people - I think the comments show that too. Personally I know that my worth is not defined by how much I weigh but I still want to make changes to my body shape. I def feel more confident when I’m at a lower weight than I am currently. In the 80s I was an active athlete and could not fit into a single piece of high street clothing. I was not fat in any sense of the word yet no clothing went over a US10 and I was around a 12/14. Its them not us. I feel no compunction to support these brands,

I go by if my clothes are too loose or too tight. Right now I had to go up in size to fit comfortably. Which makes me sad. I have been overweight all of my life and I have been judged by so many people including myself. One thing that I’ve learned is that it seems that it is and has always been acceptable to make cruel and judgmental comments about others when it comes to weight. “Just stop eating so much” or “exercise more” or other simplistic advice are generally the response. I learned approximately 20 years ago that I have suffered from depression for the majority of my life and emotional eating was a way for me to cope. I have been doing therapy and it has helped, but years of being depressed has made an impact on my life that cannot be easily undone. I say of all this to highlight the need for compassion and understanding in this area. I have been able to find a few websites that cater to larger bodies and I have found some amazing styles that I embrace that don’t make me feel dowdy. But I would love to see high-end brands be more inclusive. They would make so much more money which is what they love. Sorry for the book I’m commenting, Amelia Rose, but this video has struck a cord with me. Thanks for addressing this and for recommending Gwenny’s channel. I’m about to head over there now. ❤

Don’t feel bad about feeling better having lost weight. I’m in the same boat - only lost a few pounds but feel more myself! A lot of what you’ve spoken about resonates with me. Factually I am a perfectly healthy weight yet often feel like a weeble! Even when on my lighter side, I’m still curvy. Nothing fits my hips but also my waist. For me, it’s not just about size but also height. I feel I don’t have the stature to dress fashionably a lot of the time. And when I did lose weight so felt in proportion, brands still weren’t inclusive

Great video Amelia and love that you’re throwing light at this issue. Personally I hate the phrase ‘plus size’. A size is a size regardless of what number it is and it serves nothing more than to stigmatise the whole issue.
Also size is so subjective too. One of my best friends is the same height as me but we’re made completely different. About 10 years ago I was a size 10 which is around the right size for me. My friend was at the time a size 14/16. She went through a period where she felt like she had to lose weight as the doctor told her that her BMI which is a ridiculous scale was too high. She lost a lot of weight and she got down to a size 10 and in all honesty, she wasn’t any happier and she looked unwell. Fast forward a few years, we talked about this period of her life and she was very insecure about being a 14/16 and she learnt through a lot of therapy that she was ‘seduced’ by these fashion magazines and ideologies about the perfect size and weight. She’s now a 12/14 and she’s so much happier in herself. I think what I was trying to say is.. size is individual and peoples feelings are complex and individual and excuse the pun, one size doesn’t fit all. I have a small bone structure and my friend has a much bigger bone structure. My size 10 looks and feels very different to her size 10. Fashion houses need to do much better to understand and cater for this.

As i've lost weight I do admit i have a certain excitement as i can now fit into certain designers. It was really cool to buy and try on Fendi RTW. Like one hand i do recognize that i shouldn't have to lose weight in order to fit into certain designer, but on the other I am excited for expansion of brands that i can buy from.

I’m short at 5’3 and I find most brands don’t create proper petite ranges. I’m a UK 12, but I look positively dumpy if skirts and trousers are cut too long. Models are slim, but they’re also very tall so clothes drape. If things aren’t made in proportion, they’re not flattering on shorter people.

What is crazy is that 5’3 is actually the average height for a woman in the UK so really shouldn’t be considered short (I’m also 5’3) but so many clothing brands cut for model proportions, that they are unflattering on the majority of people. I am slim and a small clothes size but still feel dumpy sometimes because of this.

This goes to show that people who we think are confident and have there s**t together can have issues with their body that we know nothing about, and a throw away comment can really hit a nerve.
Body shaming is so wrong on many levels! I'm 160cm and a UK size12, and was very skinny as a teenager (a UK size 6). There were often comments about anorexia even though I ate like a horse, something I definitely can't do today. Luckily these comments didn't affect me.
But whatever size somebody is there should be no shame, and shaming somebody because of their size is bullying, and can potentially end in eating disorders as well as other mental health issues.

Regardless of what anyone says, the reason that fashion models tend to be thin, is so the body is not straining against the clothes.
That means the clothes win. People want to look at the clothes not the model. It's around the wrong way but that's the reality.
Because bodies vary so much it's very difficult indeed to have ready to wear in plus sizes.
It's restrictive design-wise so you will not have high fashion that does it consistently unless it's a dedicated brand specialising in plus sizes.
An alternative is to go back to the future and have a personal tailor. My grandmother had one, and many well-to-do women did.
You can get the best possible fit and that way you can buy designer stuff that does, and look great.
Emphasis is on the fabric, fit and accessories which can be high fashion. Or go couture. And pay stratospheric prices.

I always feel as long as you buy clothes in the size that is correct for your body then fashion is for you. I know it’s easy for me to say as a thin petite person , but I have seen curvy girls in similar clothes to me and they look just as good, they are just a different shape. But neither is better. I am 5’3 … when I shop online I know half the stuff I buy is going to the tailors as it will be too long, but I accept that models are 5’10… it’s just about adapting clothes to your shape and not expecting to look like the model.❤

All my life, fitting clothes has been difficult. I'm short, always have been a little heavier than I should be, and the worst is being short waisted, a little busty, and not having a nice neck. Sloping shoulders, and I feel like my clavicle is two inches too high! So, since I had taught myself to sew as a kid, I made all my clothes throughout high school and college. Including formal dresses. I was able to make beautiful stylish clothes for myself. I am a fairly accomplished seamstress. I had to learn to alter patterns before cutting, etc. A self aetelier. Vogue patterns aways has a series of patterns by designers. This made me very happy!
Your video is super relevant! All sizes of people have money to spend where they choose. One of my friends laments that she puts her money to bags shoes and sunglasses, because those always fit. Clothes are her nemesis. I have another friend, who had enough of not being able to wear what she likes. She is also a talented seamstress, and started designing her own things. She now takes her line to events with pop up stores, bridal expo's, etc. She see's the potential there. Shamefully, fashion houses do not see that market. We should all strive to be a better version of ourselves healthwise. But that does not require one to be a size 0. I have lost much weight too. But it sucks when you lose a lot but in your head you still feel fat. 😮

So I thinks it’s not bad to feel better about yourself when you lose a little weight. I am a smaller person and had gained about 20 pounds but people would tell me not to lose weight because I was fine. But I didn’t feel good. So it’s from an opposite perspective. I started to eat better and do some moderate exercise to get to a place where I’m happier and more comfortable. Not “skinny”. And fashion also doesn’t look good on me just because I am smaller. I am short and I think most fashion is made for taller people. So the struggle is real for all too fat, too short, etc. my main point was I just think it’s very personal at what weight a person is comfortable and I don’t want you to feel bad that you feel better. It’s all relative.

I’ve noticed that some luxury platforms have started trying to represent different body shapes and I try to actively encourage that. A little while ago I noticed Matches had started using a ‘typical’ model and a curvier model for each item (not all but some). So I actually contacted them and told them I thought it was great as I think if we openly support these sorts of changes others will get onboard. When we use average looking women as models we normalise that and tell our society (and our daughters) that average bodies are normal shapes in fashion.

Great video! (Team apple shape.) I’ve always been built “sturdy,” and my weight has fluctuated throughout my adult life for reasons that had seemingly nothing to do with what I was or wasn’t doing, but I’ve (almost) always been fat. Not being included sucks. It sucks knowing that you live in a stigmatized body, and that people will assume all sorts of negative things about you based on your body size and shape.
I think it’s perfectly fine that you feel better after having been able to lose weight, but it’s important to situate those feelings in the context that society treats you crappier when you’re bigger! Who *wouldn’t* want to be thinner, right? It impacts everything, from what we can wear, to our romantic relationships, to how people assess our job performance and intellectual abilities and even how much we’re paid, to how our doctors treat us. So I don't think anyone should begrudge you your feelings! They make perfect sense.
I’ve been getting into handbags of late (how I found your channel, hi), but I’ve never been into fashion-probably because I’ve been made to feel self-conscious about weight since I was a little chubby kid. I really feel for the folks who are knowledgeable, insightful fashion devotees who are ignored or even reviled by the industry because they don’t have “the right look.” But the one upside, I will say-not being able to wear hardly anything the luxury brands produce sure helps me save more money for handbags! ;)

A few decades of being overweight and I'd never even bothered considering fashion house clothing because they've never ever catered to the overweight crowd. It's just something I accepted, which is unfortunate, but now that I'm losing weight, I can tell you there's no way in hell I'll spend my money on fashion house clothing when I can fit into it. They lost me as a customer for life years ago. The only exception might be Christian Siriano. I remember watching Project Runway episodes where they have to create garments for overweight clients is also really distressing because so many of the designers struggle like crazy with it. He had a really hard time with it, but learned from the experience, and now creates lovely garments for overweight clients. My two cents! Great video, Amelia.

If I wanted to express my thoughts and feelings about this topic well you said it all. I was very skinny and underweight all my life just until I turned 44. I had miscarriage earlier and believe it or not got the covid vaccination and i have been through lot of stress and then turned from skinny underweight to curvy overweight. I'm 47 now, I don't know what to wear and how to wear I don't want to go out, everyone who sees me has a comment on wow you gain so much weight, I stopped dying my hair, stopped wearing nail polish. I just feel not good enough anyway, and I lost all my confidence. I can't even wear what people say it suits my body frame now I just can't see it good on cause I am used to certain style. I feel I'm another person and honesly I don't love this person. So I am always at home .

I’ve lost 110 lbs but still have difficulty with clothing. I’m a US 12-14, sometimes 16 depending on brand, and it’s hard to find designer brand items that fit. It’s depressing to be more self conscious of my body now, than when I weighed 280 lbs. With my loose skin issues, I often have to buy a size up then have it tailored to fit correctly.

Before i loat the weight i was ao unheathy i had ao many weight related illnesses. Fashion sucked for me when i was 22 st. Also d feckers charge double d price for plus size fashion. Skinny privilege does exist. Shop keepers treat you differently when you are in a curvier body everyone does. I hate acknowledging this but have to. Even d medical professionals treat and address you differently. Every ailment you go to the dr with you is told its coz your fat. Result you don't get proper medical care. I hated going out as i had very little to wear and what i had was old fashioned.

I think that fashion is not made for most of the people that are out of the "standard" and that you shouldn't feel bad about it. :) I am 180cm, 63 kgs, with very tiny waist and very wide hips and strong legs from years of sport and it is almost impossible to find clothes that fits. The current trend of very boxy clothing cuts looks horrible on me. I can barely find any jeans that go over my hips and that are then not mega loose on my waist. Also everything is always too short. Going shopping for the clothes is extremely frustrating every time and I barely can buy anything, no matter if it is high street or a designer.

The problem is that most clothing stores seem to think that the bottom half of the shirt is no longer needed. 😂
You find a cute jumper and you put it on and it just stops mid-belly😂 why? I'm 5'7, 190lb, in my thirties...and I would like to have the bottom half of my shirt please! The cuts and shapes these days don't really fit my bodytype. And the "plus-size" stores in my area tend to sell shapeless tents with 80ies patterns...I've made peace with my "post-baby" body but it seems like society hasn't. Social media is a big factor in this I think. Everyone pressures you to have kids but DON'T YOU DARE to look like you've had them😂

I feel like no matter how much i depreive myself of tasty food, i cant get rid of my excess 5 kg. If i take it much harder, life would be miserable, i would be irritable and tired non stop. So i belive the weight is regulated with hormones, not only calories. This complicates how to lose weight and stay there, not to mention hormesis( body want to stay in equilibrium) which is that the body would even store fat and be extra energy efficient if you manage to begin lose weight, because the body want to protect against starvation from the food situation before. Also as you age the metabolism allows down and it would be even harder to lose weight as also muscle mass disappear.... So this means youre body is actively working against a human wanting to lose weight for most people unless you got fast metabolism. All this makes me have mad respect and sensitivity around peoples bodies.

Maybe try viewing fashion as the business that it is; they make clothing in sizes they will sell the most of. It’s no way a reflection of us as people. They don’t manufacture clothes to lift you up and make you feel wonderful (or otherwise). They make fashion to make money. It’s well known that Karl was a sh*t, let’s be honest, the man loved the post-war, very slim figure body that had sadly suffered from malnutrition. Our world today is so different; we travel more and meet people with different ethnicities, whom we go on to have children with, resulting in such diverse but natural body shapes. That won’t change and fashion probably won’t either. Going to a Tailor will give you clothing that helps you feel your best. I’m short and fat, my friend is tall and slim and we both have our own set of clothing issues to deal with. If you can find something in a good material in a style that you feel works for you, consider factoring in the cost of popping to a Tailor to have a nip and tuck - rather than a Surgeon 😊. ETA - I found your chat at the end to be more personal to you rather than fashion in general. I’m glad you feel happier in yourself today.

What women's high fashion demands of its market, and what the "average" person expects of herself, are two different things. Runway models are almost always rail thin, verging on skeletal; the clothes they're displaying hang from the shoulders. Breasts barely exist on a runway model, as they interfere with the line of the garment. "Average" women, *especially* young women, yearn for the Kardashian-esque ideal: curvy, full-breasted, full-buttocked on a skinny frame, which is impossible in the natural way women are built. They consume images like this (many of which are digitally doctored) every single day. Over the past several years, I don't think women are influenced by high fashion ideals anywhere near as much as they used to, when Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and similar magazines were the fashionista's point of reference. Now social media images are what count. The images are very different, and are felt very deeply by their audience.

Unfortunately the amount of energy that us regular people put into thinking about this subject, doesnt seem to have a mirror in brands. I remember the public outcry 10 years ago when Mango ( which is Spanish) created their plus size line for people starting at a 40FR size ( i think is like a size 10 in the us and uk). While this was going on, i couldnt stop thinking how this had probably been discussed internally for years at different business levels and no one had seen what was wrong with this idea.

People are so detached from how clothes are produced and sewn as no one learns how to sew at school anymore. If you want clothes that flatter and fit your body then you need to find a good dress maker or tailor and get you clothes made for you. If you can afford a designer bag then you should be able to afford to create your own wardrobe and take control of what you wear and your personal style. We are too dependent on a system that can not embrace a multitude of different figures and body types.

I just had an experience that I feel is sort of related to this. I ordered a fitted button-down shirt in my size US 6, and when it arrived and I went to try it on, I couldn't even get it to close around my ribcage. It fit everywhere else, on my arms and at the bottom around my stomach. Now, mind you, I'm a B cup, so it's not even like I have a large chest. So I sent it back in exchange for a size 10 because it was so small around the chest that I didn't even trust a size 8 to fit me. The size 10 arrived, and it did fit around my chest area, but I was absolutely swimming in the rest of it. I would have considered keeping it and just wearing it unbuttoned and more casual if it hadn't been for this extra material that was sort of on the back along the sides. It was almost like they made room for backfat or something, and I could totally tell that it was cut differently in the larger size. My point is though is that I was like, what on earth sort of body was this made for!? Someone small chested with a tiny ribcage and yet enough back/side fat to need extra material. Just to explain, it was the area above the bra line kind of under your arms and around the back. I just felt like it was very thoughtless the way they made this shirt in the larger size. There's no way they actually had a real human being try it on before selling it to their customers. I feel like a lot of these companies are increasing their size range to look more inclusive without putting in the effort to ensure that the clothes are even wearable. I also want to add that I'm aware that size 10 is not plus sized, but their clothes do seem very geared towards very thin women judging from their website and the models.

I gained weight due to medication for depression after my dad passed. He was the one I was close it. I've struggled since to lose the weight. I went to a dietitian who basically said, you need to be moving like 8-10hrs a day to lose weight. I have genes that keep me fat and I was also diagnosed with gigantism, I had a breast reduction. Every time I gained weight they got bigger. I was a 46J, ya a J cup! No one needs that much boob, Dolly Parton would have been jealous lol. I got them reduced but insurance doesn't cover a tummy tuck lol.
After I'd gained the weight and worked hard to lose about half I was asked to be a godmother and I went shopping. Omg I found a really beautiful Calvin Kline dress, it wasn't expensive, I was a size 14 (I'm fairly tall as well so I was excited) but they only went up to size 12...the same store's plus size section didn't have anything similar, it was all dark and frumpy clothes. I was so depressed.
Even when I went wedding dress shopping stores either didn't have plus size dresses or if they did they'd hide you away far, far in the back. Like the little pedestal women stand on with the mirrors, they had plus size sections and you didn't get to be in the front of the store with the beautiful people. The store I got my dress from didn't do that. Everyone shared the same spaces liked that so much I got my matron of honors dress there as well.
When I was single I remember men treating me like, oh you're fat, you'll take what you can get. Omg no. just because I'm over weight doesn't mean I have low self esteem and I'll let you treat me like crap. I didn't grow up fat so I never had that mentality. It's sad to see pics of myself when I was younger because like you said about that meme, I thought I was fat. I stopped reading women's magazines in high school because I wasn't stick skinny. I am tallish and I was an athlete but in the 90s, if you weren't Kate moss you were fat. I remember Cindy Crawford being in a tabloid when she was married to Richard Gere and he was carrying her on his back. Her thighs weren't huge but wow they were like, omg she's so fat. Cindy Friggen Crawford was being called fat for not having the thighs of a 12yo! I was like, I'm done with magazines. So as a now fat adult, it bothers me but I don't get down on myself too much because life happens and even if I starved myself I wouldn't look like a fashion model so why bother. I like who I am but I would be nice if fashion would let us be happy with ourselves.

Hmmm, this is very tricky .. 30-40-50 yers ago the majority people were slim/ normal size, so the fashion industry made clothes for those figures... nowadays people got fatter... and yes, in the 90' made a few brands clothes still slim/normal size meanwhile people got bigger and bigger in size ( and this evolution is due to consuming processed food etcetera ) like you said you eat and drink alcohol and do not exercize so yeah that way you will never be size 36/38 but you want to dress fashionable... this a double standart to me.. i worked in fashion industry for decades.. its not lucrative for any brand make big sizes clothes to sell, bc they are not selling that well and are more expensive to make/ sell bc more material was used to make them/ logically right.. so this whole : brands need to be more inclusive is not that easy ( yes all businesses are here to make money, you know that, you are business owner yourself :-) dont be sad your flower dont bloom when you are not watering it.. just saying.
