@@cactusjoe Now how did I miss this one? 😲 I'm very badly into rocks too 🙄😄 I lost most of my collection when I was homeless but still have all my meteorites. I've been collecting again since I landed in Kent, I have a collection in the cactus house that I'm planning on doing a small vid for my other channel. I've even found the KT boundary on the coast nearby here, the layer where the asteroid hit that wiped out the dinatrons 🦕

I'm all about " staging " I think it really makes the plants stand out!! I use also fossils & arrow heads. The arrow heads are finds from caves & farm fields here in the Ozarks. We also have some very interesting rocks that have many holes allover often with quartz crystals in the holes. You have some great examples of cool rocks to use in staging!!!!! Love the idea of combining plants with stones. I have quite a collection of stones , quartz and stuff as I'm also interested in the healing ability of stones. I have and still are into them for about 30 years. A lot of my stones are in boxes so I will have a rummage around to see what looks good with my plants. I loved this! Very inspiring! What makes these concepts hard to execute becomes really hard in a small, 4-5 inch container. It often looks like just a rock plopped next to a plant and never achieves the look of a real miniature landscape like your shelf or an outdoor garden can achieve. The scale becomes more accurate when you can add more space. I think I need to look for miniature rocks that look like giant boulders, so when I place them next to my plants. they look like a natural outcropping around the plant only on a miniature scale. I'm going to be using some Haworthia chloracantha var. denticulifera that naturally grows in shallow rock crevices or rock ledges. I'm getting a vision...
That's fantastic, Terry! Very happy that the video was able to help and inspire you with some thoughts for own concepts. It really is all about just trying out a few things in this space, experimenting a bit, etc and then you will find what works best for you! It was always a dream of mine to have a little mini landscape, cacti and rocks combined, which is what I had worked on for many years ....before I had enough of the experience and ingredients to finally put the one together that I now grow and cultivate in my greenhouse. I was wondering, are there any stones that could harm the plants, or even if any would be beneficial in some way? Or because it's just placed on top of the soil is it quite safe to use any stone that has been cleaned?
Hi Ruby, thanks and great question! Indeed, in my experience the vast majority of hard stone (or rock) types are quite safe and can be used once they have been properly cleaned with normal, plain tap or rain water (no detergents, soap, etc). I would avoid using softer, especially chalky stones as these will naturally dissolve much faster over time - and usually change, i.e. worsen the alkalinity/quality of the soil your plants are growing in.
Almost all of my succulent plants are in bonsai pots. They've got rocks, mud men and the occasional ceramic items. I wander beaches , streams looking for unusual rocks to use.

I've thought about adding small gravel size rocks but never thought about bigger rocks. Thank you for the information and inspiration!
