Thanks for sharing! Great video, very useful tips! Actually I came up to the video looking for ideas on what to do with my cacti that got sunburned after I put them into the sun on the balcony. The parts exposed to sun became brown-yellowish. I moved the pot to a covered, sun-protected place, but now wandering whether the plants need some extra care now. Would you have any advice?
Hi Vlad, thanks for your positive feedback, I'm glad you are finding the tips useful. Regarding your question, sorry to hear about your sunburned cacti, but you did exactly the right thing by immediately taking them out of the direct sun light. They should hopefully recover over the following few weeks, as the burnt areas of the epidermis will heal and probably scar over. I would only water VERY carefully now, as the plants are currently stressed. Also, in the shade of course any water in the substrate will evaporate much slower, so beware of root rot from excessive watering. I would recommend misting/spraying, rather than watering for a while. Hopefully all goes well, best of luck, and happy growing ;-)

@@cactusjoe greetings back to your old video! After watching your unboxing movie I decided to check your old advices. I remembered that I followed your recommendation and indeed, my cacti recovered and grew very well in summer! Thank you very much once again! Vlad
Very informative video again, Joe. I’ve always thought and heard that the water on plants in sunlight burning them was a myth? I always water in the evening anyway ever since I heard about CAM (Crassulacean acid metabolism). Since I’ve been doing that I’ve noticed how better the plants look. Thank you for sharing with us. Have a wonderful day and weekend and happy growing 👍🏻🌵☀️🌼🏜
Many thanks and I'm glad you found the video informative Daz 👍👍😊🌵 Regarding burns on plants through water droplet lenses, in my experience this is mainly an issue when the plants are first exposed to stronger and direct midday sunlight ☀️☀️ in early spring after being moved from their often darker winter dormancy locations - less so once back in their full growth mode during summer and early autumn 👍 I also agree with you that watering either in the early evening, or early morning (my preference, as plant stems can dry off during the day) is best. I would generally advise against watering during hot sunny midday periods, as you say because of cacti using CAM, which minimises metabolism during the daytime. I wonder whether others have different or similar experiences with timing of watering? Thanks again for your feedback and wishing you a great weekend too, happy growing! 😉😊👍☀️🌵
Hi Charly, thanks for your positive feedback and very glad to hear that you are finding the tips useful. Indeed, it does sound a bit "counter-intuitive" to many that a cactus (= desert/savannah plant) could actually suffer from sunburn in spring ;-) But after several months of winter, with often very little sunshine, or at least much weaker sun intensity, that bright and intense spring sunshine can really do quite a bit of damage if our plants are suddenly left directly exposed to it! The good news: they normally get used to the sun again relatively quickly, within a month or so, and then are much more resilient again :-) Keep those comments coming, and happy growing!
Many thanks Sebastian, I'm delighted that you found the video and tips useful!! Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I am always very happy to hear that some of the infos and tips shared are of help and useful for your own growing of cacti & other succulent plants - that's the whole point of the channel and very encouraging to hear from fellow growers and enthusiasts! Hope you have a great day, best wishes, and happy growing!!👍🌵
Hi Bill, many thanks for watching, and as always a huge thank you also for commenting, so glad about your feedback as it makes me happy when the video content appears to be informative and useful! Thanks again and have a wonderful day!! 👍🌵🪴🌵🌺🌼🌸
I forgot to mention I use a 5x3 meter shade cloth on my balcony because the balcony faces maximum Southern sun and during the monsoon season the cloudy, humid days change the cacti's epidermis and a sudden end to the monsoon brings sudden direct sunshine with temperatures of over 38℃😅A shade cloth will save your cacti and it is a definite must☝️Thanks again Joe🤲🌟
Yes, I 100% agree with you, a shade cloth is often forgotten but it IS a definite must!! Thanks so much for sharing your experiences and techniques, so interesting to hear!! Have a great day, best wishes and happy growing!! 👍😊🌵
Great and helpful tips Joe👍Over here in Japan I must water even in the winter at least once every two to three weeks; a 'spritz' watering. I am now trying water therapy on one stubborn gymnocalycium saglionis that won't grow a root system. I watched a recent video of Cactus Quest and saw a man who does it often and it works very well. Thanks for your very thorough and helpful video Joe👍🌟I learn new things everyday
@Newman Mansell many thanks for watching, and I'm very glad you found the video useful! Many thanks also for your great comments and feedback, all very much appreciated! That is the beauty of our hobby growing plants, I think, we are all learning new things all the time! I will definitely follow your tip and watch the video on the 'spritz' watering! WOW, really interesting to hear that you are growing your cactus collection in Japan. Do you have them outdoors on the balcony all year round? Hope you are having a wonderful weekend, best wishes and happy growing!! Thanks again, Newman 👍😊🌵
@mywaterbottles hi there! Thanks again for watching and thanks so much for your feedback, so glad you found the video useful! In the spring time it can be quite tricky to go purely by temperature, but I always try and find a milder phase of several days (not just a single day) with day time temps of around 18-20 C, and only then I spray ...but just lightly so plants can dry off again before the evenings. It is really just to "wake up" the plants after the long, dry winter dormancy - this encourages them to start developing their very fine, thin root networks just below the top of the soil/substrate. Hope this helps, have a wonderful day, best wishes to you in Istanbul!
Hi Mikael! I will mist/spray very lightly with not too cold rain water (I leave it for a day or two inside first, to avoid "freeze shocking"). I do that in mid/late March, in the morning, so plants have the whole day to dry off. And I will only do it when the weather forecast predicts a few milder/sunny days coming. Then, a week or two later, I also gradually start watering, first with a smaller amount just to make the substrate a bit moist, and then after a week or two I slowly increase the amount of water. I will only fertilize after the 2nd or 3rd proper watering, so usually in May. There is no point in fertilizing too early, before the new roots have started to form. Hope this helps, have a great week ahead and happy growing of course!😊🌵🌱🌵🏵🌺🌼😎

We have had 2 days of 80° F here this week, so I just watched this video the second time. Good info for new people like me. Thanks again for posting.
