🌵 please please pleeease make a update in a few months so we can see how they are growing 💚 also, this is officially my comfort videos from now on hahaha
🌵That was a lot of repotting! They look so good! Would love to see the growth of them, especially the monkey tail. I have one that is huge and needs repotting so I will attempt to do that soon! 🌵🐒
Three small tips for you, things I picked up in my 69years. 1/. Use a coffee filter to cove your large hole in pots. They are cheap, allow extra water to drain through and don't fall apart when wet. Also won't harm any roots that come in contact with them. 2/. Try using a cake icing knife not a butter knife, for freeing up plants that maybe stuck to a pot. They are not sharp so won't do much damage to any thick root they come in contact with. It is also very flexible so will conform to any curves the existing pot may have. 3/. When you have a plant in a plastic pot that has thicker roots coming out of the hole in the bottom. Cut the pot not the root. Love the video, even if it took me two goes to watch it all.
A cactus I have is about 30 years old. The last couple of years life has been a Shit show and my poor little cactus got seriously ignored, the roots disintegrated and it fell out of its pot. This video inspired me to try and pot it back up. I actually stopped the video halfway to do it. So now I have to wait and see if it does anything.🤞🤷♀️
Elmer's Glue applied to Bunny Ears tiny thorns on fingers... allow to dry.. . Great way to remove these almost invisible stickers... very bad idea to touch these cacti..
I love all your videos! But this was especially excellent! There is limited cactus/succulent material on RUclips. And your videos are always so wonderful! I was really relieved to see the Monkey's Tail successfully repotted 🥰🌵
Your Euphorbia lactea ‘White Ghost’ has normal roots. Euphorbia generally have very shallow root system. So do many cacti and succulents even very large and old ones. They tend to like spreading out rather than spreading down. You pull out some of the giant barrel cacti that weigh in the hundreds of pounds, and they’re barely a couple of inches deep. Overall, you shouldn’t worry too much about roots being cramped and shallow. Many succulent species, especially desert cactus, can live literally between small rock crevices. They aren’t like the tropical plants you’re used to. For cacti, it’s often better to underpot, especially if you live somewhere temperate and humid.
I don't like the idea of not giving them light at all during the winter. Cacti in their native habitat would still be outside. They just wouldn't get as much light. I'd recommend keeping them in the brightest windows you can during winter, but cutting way back on water when it starts getting cold (if not stopping completely, especially for that Mammillaria - they're particularly sensitive to being watered too frequently).
I also have to agree. I grew up in West Texas desert and they obviously get light but little water during winter months. As of February it's already in the 80s. Cacti need light all year round. It's something that should be really obvious.
@@jessicaliltxn3295 They don’t really need light when they’re dormant. Keeping them in complete darkness is a valid method of overwintering them without etiolation. I’ve seen it done with Trichocereus. Unpot them, wrap them in newspapers, and keep them in a cold basement throughout winter. Then slowly acclimate them to light when spring comes.
@morningstar8187 Etiolation occurs when its actively growing but gets less light. If it's dormant how would that happen? Different cacti have different requirements but they should receive some light in winter. People can do what they want but Mine always stay in the brightest window when the are indoors. Water and temperature are what I worry about most. My cacti are happy.
@morningstar8187 I would have NEVER known. 🤭 I've been around cacti my whole life indoors and outdoors. People can do as they please I just do things in a way that works for me and all my cacti. Js
I’m in the UK and grew cacti for over 20 years, I stopped watering end of September and gave them no water at all until the next April, they in my experience need as much light as you can possibly give them over that period also. Another tip is to use tomato fertiliser at half strength during their active growing period encourages them to flower
This is absolutely the most enjoyable video you’ve ever done, at least for me. We don’t see many cactus and succulent repots. I love these and have lots. I live in the southern Arizona desert so mine are outside all year long but still in pots.
I saw someone else on RUclips (can't remember!) use folded newspaper to wrap round cacti instead of fabric. It worked really well for me! Just need loads of sheets and fold up into a thick rectangular shape and just wrap round 😊🌵
Look up @dessertplantsofavalon and @caffeinecactus there are tons of cacti content online. I use to have a lot of cacti, but grew away from it to aroid plants.
I think the plant with your starfish cactus is a Queen of the Night or orchid cactus, but I am not 100% sure. I love your shirt and the cactus mug. I ❤ your videos!!! Thanks Fern! 🌵
Your anthuriums peeking out from behind the table remind me of dogs begging for food 😂 I always look forward to your cactus and succulent video 💚🌵Thanks for making it a long one!
I’m excited for this one.. my monkey tail died over the winter and I’m so sad.. Thanks for doing this video. I appreciate it ❤.. so I just ordered the variegated opuntia and when it’s big enough I am going to put it into my scorpion pot because it does just look like they are meant to be together.. and use a bit of packing tape to get the thorns/needles out of your fingers.. and I wear my rubber gloves 🌵👍🏻💚
Hi Fern Here is a tip. In Australia i purchased a roll of synthetic fly screen mesh and i cut into squares to cover the holes. Great drainage and it cost me about $8 at a local hardware store for the roll. I have used it in all the pots i have replanted and you can barely see i have used any. Much better drainage than coffee filters i believe. Love your cacti❤
I always look forward to your yearly cacti succulent repot. You have a beautiful collection. I lowkey flinched when you were touching your new opuntia. Their glochids are deceivingly innocent. Be careful touching your eyes. Your rat tail cactus is looking lovely after the repot.
I had so many cactus die because I was always under the assumption they don’t need water but my goodness! Once you start watering them they really pop Off! 😍
You can tell by the thickness of the bear paw. Yours is definitely under watered. Should be plump. Easy fix nonetheless, which is why I love succulents.
Your tongs are great, but try several pages of a newspaper, magazine , etc. to put around your cactus. You can wrap it around your cactus and actually hold it while repotting 😊
A forest cactus sat in the same pot with the slipway. Let me give you some advice: when transplanting cacti, use newspaper. There will be no pricking of your hands. Thank you for the video! Good luck!

Coffee filters or pieces of paper towel work to keep the soil in the pot. You can also buy round pieces in two inch and four inch screening. Another thing you can do is buy a roll of screening and cut pieces out of it to cover the hole in the bottom of the pot.
🌵 loved this!! Please make more longer videos if you can 👌🏻 I was holding my breath for the monkey tail, that was stressful 🤣🤣 good work girl. Good work x
I wish I’d watched this yesterday 😂 I literally just picked up two of the cutest twistiest ‘fluffiest’ cacti and was picking out spines for the longest time! Soooo many and soooo fine 😮😂
Instead of using a towel when handling cacti, use several thickness of newspaper folded down on itself to look like a sash. Wrap around cactus when you need to move them out of and into new pots. Easier to throw away, rather than removing spines from a towel.
My little sister fell into a very similar cactus to the bunny ear opuntia when we were kids. She had the worst skin irritation for weeks, it was awful. Definitely be careful with it, I’m literally feeling phantom spines/hairs on my hairs thinking about how much we hated that cactus lol. You won’t notice them getting stuck until you get the horrible fibreglass shredded skin feeling haha.

I always look forward to these videos when you do your cactus repotting. They are my favourites. I wish there are more people collecting these types of plants. I would love to live somewhere that i can grow cacti and succulents all year round.
I bet the euphorbia white ghoast could be potted lower in the same pot to be a good amount of soil to root ratio and be nice and sturdy, and just not fill it as high, if you're worried about it getting too much water for the small roots.
I 100% need to repot my succulent and cacti 😅 Definitely recommend using a “grater glove” for repots! It’s like chainmail for your hand for grating food
I use the Schultz plant liquid stuff on my tropicals, and my cacti/succulents and my orchids, but all at 1/2 strength - they all love it and grow like crazy. I actually have the Schultz cactus & orchid feed, but no room! I don't need 5 different watering cans to deal with, incl. straight water and distilled. My cactus live in a south facing window all year round and for years. the room is light and cool in the long dark winter, and bright and sunny and very warm during the short Swedish summer. They get flowers and seem to be okay. re-pot sometimes. Water them in the summer.

You can use your terracotta pots as cover pots so you still get the look while actually potting into plastic.
