The thing about a lot of the indie 90s music, it was left to personal interpretation.

    • @kierstenridgway4634

@@kierstenridgway4634 true true. Some of the indie stuff may seem to have no clear story. You’d have to research to see what the lyrics may mean. Or don’t research and give it your own meaning. Lots like abstract art.

I recall a house party with a bunch of friends jamming (playing records) to industrial music such as Ministry, Nitzerebb, FRONT 242 etc and someone showed up with this Nirvana vinyl. We were blown. We obviously think Ministry kicks butt but it wasn't hard to see that Nirvana was bringing in a new sound replacing those rock hair bands. @JustinceServ On the cool, react to Ministry "Thieves" (year 1989) and you'll hear a good example of industrial and it has a "bounce" feeling.

Iconic grunge from back in the day. 1991 :) Kurt Cobain was depressed and in interviews band members had said he was freaked out about becoming such a huge band and yes he was depressed and there was no warning when he died by suicide....many theories are out there that his wife murdered him. It's never been proven though if that was even a thought by police, I saw crime scene pics which are no longer on the internet and it looked pretty real to me.... Same way people think Chester was murdered but Chester was open about his depression his whole career as you can hear it in the lyrics of the songs. Check out Nirvana Come As You Are.

The soft then loud dynamic is something they used in many of their songs. I would recommend watching some of their live performances as well.
(aside: people often reference Dave Grohl when filling people in about the band; but, though he isn't as relevant nowadays, I like to at least acknowledge the oft overlooked bassist Krist Novoselic)

Nirvana was heavily influenced by punk rock and new wave.
Good shit. This was their first hugely successful album their other two most popular would be In Utero and Unplugged.
IMHO if you want a real feel for the band you want to go to some deeper cuts:
Sappy (Laundry Room), Sliver, Molly’s Lips, Floyd The Barber, and Territorial Pissings.
If you can find a recording of Verse-Chorus-Verse it’s a really deep but hard to find because it never got released on an album. To make things harder Sappy is often mislabeled as VCV

Grunge was a subgenre of alternative. The typical "grunge" song was driven by heavy instrument distortion and angst-filled lyrics that a lot of us young folks were drawn to. As I've posted before, to completely understand the impact grunge had on Gen X, you have to understand the prior decade, the 80's. Most of us had parents who were busy climbing up the corporate ladder or we had one parent struggling to make ends meet! Either way we were alone a lot. The music was horrible in my opinion, a lot of one-hit wonders, pop princesses, and dudes in bright spandex, eyeliner and big, over-processed hair. The lyrics were empty and my friends and I couldn't relate to them. When grunge made it's way to the midwest, most of us became grunge. It became a "look" and we were all the way in! Finally, there were lyrics that spoke to us! A group of young midwest GenX misfits finally found their place. It's sad that most of the "grunge" OGs are gone! I miss that era the most! It was a magical time to be young!
    Andrew Wood - RIP
    Kurt Cobain - RIP
    Layne Staley - RIP
    Chris Cornell - RIP
    Scott Weiland - RIP
I have to mention Chester-RIP - he came later but he spoke to my soul! I hope Heaven has a stage and off to the right, a pit!!
