Best CW tutorial ever!!! I've been doing CW for 30 years..with this I'm pretty sure I can finish now!!!! I'm not stuck on traditional hand sewing it anymore!!!❤❤THANK YOU!!!
Oh my goodness this is amazing! I’m a new quilter and this tutorial has been so inspiring. The possibilities with this block are endless! Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial. 💗
What a great way to make the cathedral window! I have sewed these in the traditional method which takes considerably more time. Thanks for the easier option... Makes me want to run to the sewing room and pull out all my red white and blue fabrics and make one!
OMG. LOVE THE PATRIOTIC THINGS......BEAUTIFUL...... just subscribed I'm a professional seamstress but I love watching other people sew when they are doing a great job. It can get a little straining when people are not doing a good job but are telling others how to sew. I've been sewing since I was 5 years old. My mom was a very good perfectionist at sewing.

I love your videos. Your are very easy to understand and you show just enough to get the process. It’s cute how you called it the new method of cathedral window, it’s how I learned it 40 years ago when I started quilting. Again I love your video lessons!
Love this pattern and the technique is so doable, I love the symmetry. Yep had needle pierce my nail once and then the side of my finger another time. After more than 60 years sewing maybe that's not so bad.
I wish I could give you 3 thumbs up!!! Your teaching is wonderful and the quality of your sewing makes it beautiful. I must say as a dinosaur at sewing . I have a metal tool just like the one you demonstrated to make careful folds on edges. It was wonderful then and wonderful now.

I have made cathedral window quilts with denim and I can see how this would be so much easier to do. I work with a lot of first responders and military and make quilts for them. This would be awesome to add to my arsenal. This is just an FYI, for anyone who struggles with static cling in their craft room like I do. I noticed you holding your thread before you start sewing, I do that as well to keep nesting on the first few stitches but my thread always stayed on my fingers and it gets in my way. I keep a dryer sheet handy and just rub my fingers on it and to keeps that from happening.
Fantastic tutorial!! I can't wait to make it! Could you do this method on a quilt?? Thank you so much for taking the "scary" out of making the cathedral window!!!
Hadley Wooten I was thinking the same thing but because of the many layers I think it would be too heavy although you wouldn't need any batting or backing
You absolutely can do this method on a quilt! We have a full kit or pattern available for the wall hanging/quilt behind Jen! Here are the links: Wall Hanging: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Cathedral-Window-Flag-Quilt-Kit-P51873.aspx Pattern: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Cathedral-Window-Flag-Quilt-Pattern-P52280.aspx
I put away my 'purple thang' when I got my byAnnie's stiletto. It's been a game-changer for me. It's not slick, nothing slips from under it. The stiletto is faintly 'barbed'. It grabs material and allows me to hold binding to bags while going around corners. And if I can do that, holding down some general sewing, like you're showing, would be a snap. If you don't mind buying from someone else, give it a try, Jen. I love this new way of doing cathedral windows, by the way.
Oh, how I wish I had seen this video before making a pillow using your method in your previous tutorial. This seems like it will be so much easier. Thank you so much for showing how to make these beautiful items. I love the cathedral window blocks.
That is so great to hear! We have the pattern and full kit available! Here are the links: bit.ly/CathedralWindowFlagQuiltKit bit.ly/CathedralWindowFlagQuiltPattern
I always used a really wide zigzag. Put my needle down between two opposite corners and did a really dense stitch for about 5 - 7 stitches. Repeat with the opposing corners. Makes a small but neat cross on the back. Fray check or something similar should definetly be used to make sure the stitches don’t unravel with washing or long use.
I really want to try this. I will practice before I attempt to try to accomplish the real project. I probably just missed the stitch length on folding color fabric rolled over the light fabric. Going to be excited about learning this technique. Thanks for your tutorial. Blessings
Practicing first is always a great idea! SInce the stitching shows on the rolled over edges- the stitch length is up to you! We think a shorter stitch length looks cute but it really is your choice :)
I’ve taught myself to make the longest running stitch where I want my fold to be. I don’t have to run to the iron for every fold over. Easy to finger press it if needed. Easier folds when “perforated”. Also when I intent to leave an opening to turn something right side out I pre-stitch just shy of the seam so that when I turn it I know right where to sew it closed also acts as a stay stitch to keep opening from stretching out.... also gives me security of closure if I decide to leave a bigger opening to turn. Do not lock or back stitch so you can pull the thread out... if it doesn’t show don’t worry about it if matching threads. I use my “stay stitching” for preliminary trials Incase I need to adjust. I’d rather go through yards of tread than get out the seam ripper.
Can you do a tour of your sewing room, notions, etc. I always feel like people are hyping up certain products or making you buy them for a class/sew along... and then I either hate them, or never use them again...
Any notion that we suggest has been tested by us and we highly recommend! We take great care not to suggest notions that we do not use ourselves! Since they can be a substantial investment we never want to mislead our viewers or recommend a product we do not 100% believe in :) Thank you so much for watching and for your comment!

Hello, how big is a fabric square? How wide do you sew the seam allowance? How big are the small pieces of white fabric please? I would like to sew this pillow, but I can not find any measurements. Thank you very much for an answer. Best regards
Hello! Here is the link to our free download that contains the measurements needed. Merry Christmas! 🎄~Leah www.shabbyfabrics.com/Assets/Downloads/CathedralWindowPatrioticPillow_forDownload.pdf
Great job! This is supposed to be an easier way, but whichever method you prefer is the best one to use! If it's fun for you, that's the right method. ;) - Morgan
Absolutely! Here are links to the pattern as well as the full kit: Pattern: bit.ly/CathedralWindowFlagQuiltPattern Kit: bit.ly/CathedralWindowFlagQuiltKit
Because this is a small project I might hand stitch the curves instead of using the machine. If by machine, I might try using clear thread and a small hem stitch so the stitching would be less noticeable.
I have to say, this method does look easier than your other video! I want to make a blanket out of this beautiful pattern but how would I quilt it? Just stitch in the ditch or re stitch my lines to secure backing and batting? I don't want to FMQ because I feel it would ruin the the whole "window effect". Thanks and love your videos!
Brianna Castillo I thought about this too. I think stitching around the squares would work - easier that trying to stitch over the curves again. You would be stitching through the little squares so would have to coordinate. I'd love to know if you do this and how it turns out. I was thinking shabby chic florals for a baby girl quilt and the stitching would fade into the florals...
Teresa Randall I'm glad you said you commented! I think that would be so much easier, thank you! I've been searching for some fabrics recently, looking for some nice combinations, and I had my eye on some nice colorful florals as well! Have a nice day!
You can also put your quilt sandwich together right before you sew around the "Windows" then you will have the cathedral window pattern on the back too.
Hi Becky. I've included a link to the free pattern download. This was written for a 13.5"x13.5" pillow, so you'll have to scale it or add more fabrics to make it 20"x20". Happy sewing! -Bethany www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/136/how-to-make-a-cathedral-window-patriotic-pillow
They are 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares! You can see all of the measurements and require materials on the free download here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Assets/Downloads/CathedralWindowPatrioticPillow_forDownload.pdf
Hi GigiQuilts- The Free Download for this project does not include pattern instructions, as this project is a video tutorial. If you would like the written pattern instructions for this project, they are included in the Cathedral Window Quilt pattern that you can find here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/search?sortOrder=6&q=cathedral+window+pillow+pattern Hope this makes sense! -Michelle
I just watched this fabulous video and caught that you said you usually don't use steam when quilting. Years ago I saw many times that 'steam is your friend.' Why don't you use steam when quilting? (Just curious) Thank you!
Jen found some distortion happening when she used steam while quilting which caused her blocks to become misshaped or mis-sized. We do use it. sometimes, depending on the project, but not often. It certainly can be your friend, though! - Morgan
@@ShabbyFabrics Good to know, thanks! I will definitely be aware of that possibility as I quilt. I haven't noticed it in the past, but I'm not a perfectionist like Jen seems to be. That probably means I won't win any ribbons - yet. But I will probably become better the more I watch the Shabby Fabrics videos. 👍😊
I have watched this over and over. Ive got a pack of 10” squares. I do my seams on both side as shown, but when I nest my seams to sew the other sides it bunches up and I’ve got all these puckers on it and it’s not laying flat. Do I need to trim my nesting seams or what am I doing wrong at that point?
Hi Linda! When sewing initially, your project will not lay flat. You'll want to sew parts of the seam, readjust, and keep sewing. Please let us know if you have any other questions! You can always contact our very helpful customer support team at 208-664-4567 or support@shabbyfabrics.com Thank you for watching! - Sophie
I don't think I'm wrong in saying that a full quilt using this specific method would be extremely cumbersome and heavy, difficult to launder, and difficult to dry. (You would really need an industrial washer at a laundromat otherwise you'd wreck either the quilt or your washer or both.) Each small block, taking into consideration how it's initially folded into an 'envelope,' then adding in the white square, makes FIVE layers of fabric just in the block. Then, adding to the thickness is the rolled 'curve' comprising folded and sewn fabric to make the window. Then, you must add in the insulating layer and the backing fabric and you actually have seven layers to handle, quilt, bind, wash, dry, fold and store. WOW. Anything bigger than a pillow actually would not be possible for me to physically maneuver. lol And I shudder to think what the hired quilting and the shipping charges would be for a full, queen or king sized quilt with 7 layers. Yikes.
We are out of the kit, but you can grab the Free Download for this pillow here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video?search=cathedral Hope this helps! -Michelle

🎄~Leah

I did the other method you had shown us, and I truly enjoyed it. My pillow turned out great, but your saying this method is easier or better?
Great job! This is supposed to be an easier way, but whichever method you prefer is the best one to use! If it's fun for you, that's the right method. ;) - Morgan
Do the 10" squares need to be the same prints or can all of them be different?
They can all be different! It's totally up to you!
The Clover tool used for pressing an accurate seam allowance is called a Hot Ruler, SRP at Joanne's $13.99.
Yes, we've got that tool listed in the description box. It's so useful for so many things, and can be found on our website. - Morgan
When making a quilt, would it make it stronger and look better to put a backing on and doing the window stitching as the quilting to show on the back?
It wouldn't necessarily make it stronger - however, it would be lovely to see the stitching on the back of the window shapes!
Love your sewing machine. What is the brand and model? This project is perfect since I just found all my patriotic fabrics. Thanks for the video.
Thank you! We use Bernina Machines! I am not sure what that specific model is. Merry Christmas! 🎄~Leah
Is there a pattern for the flag wall hanging its beautiful.
Absolutely! Here are links to the pattern as well as the full kit:
Pattern: bit.ly/CathedralWindowFlagQuiltPattern
Kit: bit.ly/CathedralWindowFlagQuiltKit
wow its beautiful
Because this is a small project I might hand stitch the curves instead of using the machine. If by machine, I might try using clear thread and a small hem stitch so the stitching would be less noticeable.
That's a great idea! Let us know how yours turn out. - Morgan
Either one of the methods you mentioned would absolutely work! It really is up to you :)
Shabby Fabrics thank you for answering!!
Hi, may I ask how many 10" by 10" squares required to a finished 20" by 20" pillow cover? Thanks
Hi Becky. I've included a link to the free pattern download. This was written for a 13.5"x13.5" pillow, so you'll have to scale it or add more fabrics to make it 20"x20". Happy sewing! -Bethany

What size are the little cream squares? I would like to “try”and make this pillow. Not sure if I should purchase a kit or cut my own pieces.
They are 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares! You can see all of the measurements and require materials on the free download here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Assets/Downloads/CathedralWindowPatrioticPillow_forDownload.pdf
Becca I clicked on the link for the pattern and only one page of required materials came up. Also I registered but did not receive the zoom link.
-Michelle
@@ShabbyFabrics thank you.
- Sophie
Hello Judy
I have watched this over and over. Ive got a pack of 10” squares. I do my seams on both side as shown, but when I nest my seams to sew the other sides it bunches up and I’ve got all these puckers on it and it’s not laying flat. Do I need to trim my nesting seams or what am I doing wrong at that point?
Hi Linda! When sewing initially, your project will not lay flat. You'll want to sew parts of the seam, readjust, and keep sewing. Please let us know if you have any other questions! You can always contact our very helpful customer support team at 208-664-4567 or support@shabbyfabrics.com
Thank you for watching!
Yikes.
Yes, this is quite the project to commit to! Thanks for watching!! -Michelle
Can you still buy the kit?
We are out of the kit, but you can grab the Free Download for this pillow here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video?search=cathedral Hope this helps! -Michelle
😍😍😍😍👍👌
Glad you like it!! 💖 -Michelle
