Sarah, absolutely love love love what you've done to Gump so far. Definitely what Japan should have given the US market. You're doing a great job on ALL of your projects. And don't beat yourself up trying to please anybody. All real car people knows there is a lot of jobs on project cars that is not fun and boring but essential to a build. Again you're doing a great job.

Little tip when removing badging, use either a heat gun or hair dryer and heat up the glue. The badges come off a lot easier and you will not damage them if you ever want to reuse them. Love your videos, keep up the great work. You crack me up.

I’d forgotten how much I hated hog rings until I watched this!! My apprenticeship in a Ford workshop in the UK 25 + years ago involved daily replacing seat foam and trims on MK6 Escorts. We used to open the old rings rather than cutting them. We also discovered that very small cable ties (called zip ties in the USA I think) worked just as well and were much easier to fit.

Ok Sarah… we’ve to talk! Saturday I ran my usual maintenance on my commuter, oil change, air filter, the works…. I’m finished, look at my engine compartment and, and , and START CLEANING IT WITH A TOOTHBRUSH. After a while I stop, thank Sarah for putting that crap in my mind and continue….. so a 20 mins affair turned in to a 2 hour project. But w/o honking my own horn, my ATS engine is clean! 😁 you see? That happens…

For what it's worth, and for everyone's future reference, there is a hog ring removal tool. I used one when I reupholstered our old Forester. Saved me from having to buy new rings. Didn't really save much time over just cutting them, though. FYI, doing upholstery sucks! LOL My fingernails hurt just remembering it.

Fantastic job. That really looks amazing.
One tip for the future, when removing emblems, use fishing line to cut the tape instead of prying the emblem. Then use a 3M Stripe Off Wheel (part number 07498) to remove the remaining tape/glue. It works so well and is great from removing tape pinstripes. You can get the 3M wheel from Amazon for about $35.

Tip on dealing with foam, hit your neighborhood thrift store and find an electric carving knife. Makes super clean and easy to maneuver cuts in foam.
Someone on another forum suggested cutting badges off with fishing line. I'm getting ready to deal with the badges on my Taco and had set aside some guitar strings (used to cut the glass implosion shields off the CRTs in the glass cockpits I made back in the day using piano wire) but fishing line seems less likely to scratch something up.

When we remove the badges on cars that will be wrapped at my job, we make a template arround the badge from masking tape - use some nearby body lines or features as guides and put the masking tape all the way to these points. That way do don't need to calculate were the badge was sitting. Also, it is easier to remove them if you use a hot air gun to gently heat up the glue of the double sided tape the are attached with. Just be careful - it is easy to blow too much hot air, which will melt the badges... (Luckily it was on a Ford Transit work-van and not a expensive sportscar... oups...) The remaming tape is easiest to remove if you pull it in the same direction as the panel it sits on, like for instanse straight down. Do not pull outward, it will just break - if you pull down, it will release automatically, with very little residue. The rest you can wipe away with alcohol and a microfiber cloth. - As always, I am impressed by your work and that you have the guts to tear your cars to pieces... great video!

Dredging this one up from the archives... I always thought this project was just something odd (but still cool) you were doing by hopping up a station wagon with sportier parts that happen to fit. I just learned today that there is a whole "Forester Culture" out there when I saw a modified Forester with a "Forester Culture" sticker on the rear window. Not really my gig but it's always interesting to see groups united in a single car culture interest.
