  • I'm a huge fan of the little Honda CRF250L but it is by no means a perfect bike - here are my top 5 least favourite things about it...

    I can't figure out why Honda won't make a 450 for dual sport riding, but instead they make a 650 which is honestly more of a street bike than one for the trails, and a 250 which is a little weak for the roads. A 450 would solve the power issue of the 250's and not be too much to handle off-road. Overall, great video mate, very helpful.

      Josh Ernhart um they do make a a 450 duel sport based off the CRF450 at least in north america

      One just came out but the maintenance is in hours instead of 1000s of miles it’s a true street legal dirt bike not technically a dual sport

    Well reasoned video as usual thanks!! I bought a 2018 CRF250L recently and I LOVE it, having great fun and then looking down to see that I am at about 45mph is such a laugh, great fun and low risks hopefully!! I have had my ECU remapped and I am just about to refit it today, plus I have a BMC air filter plus my Arrow exhaust should arrive very soon so I cannot wait to try her "full power" ish. BUT as you state the problem is not to have loads of bhp but mainly to smooth out the power delivery, and of course another 2 horses adds about 10%!!!

      +TheMissendenFlyer I got a fair price for her sold within a week it spent it's life off-road great dual sport bike but I had trouble keeping up with the KTM and husky boys when the going got tough - on road it was perfect ! I've gone for the beta 300 X trainer she arrives on Friday I'll be doing a little ride review with some mods already ordered. Keep up the vids I really enjoy them 👍

    Hi TMF, oh I do miss your early introduction video. Just watching this one as I'm thinking of a little winter bike (my excuse) that I can use for a bit of off road.
    I'll go watch your other videos on the mods etc etc now.
    Ps I am watching loads of your clips of late, but you're putting up so many so very quickly that I can't comment on them all :-)) (that's not a complaint by the way).
    Keep up the good work!
    At this rate I won't have to watch TV.
    They seriously should bring back a Men and Motors tv program. I'd give you my vote any day!

    Coming from a wr450f Iv brought and tryed this bike for green lanes after changing the rear sprocket to 42 teeth and the front to 13 I'm find the bike very capable to lanes . Gpr power bomb exhaust system. And opened up the air filter .the pulling power is nice . I also think that the riding on the roads to and from the green lanes on this little 250 honda is a lot more comfortable. I'll never look back and regret buying it , wot an amazing runner .

    Awesome review. I just bought a 2017 days ago. have only 100 miles now on the street. Hate number 5 was improved i'd say with a more streamline looking tail/brake light. Hate number 4 seat height too high is okay for me because I'm 6' tall but still the same for 2017 i think @ 34+ inches. I appreciate the info on Hate number 3, low power. I will be looking into the power mods in the future I'm sure. Will keep it stock for a while but I do think more power will badly needed soon. Hate number 2 fuel tank capacity is the same 2.1 gallon and good point you make. Hate number 1 I will keep in mind and thank you. I'm not sure if the tires are different on the 2017. I'm taking it out to the dirt this weekend, will see. I loved the ride you shared. Nice landscape, what a great road for some fun. Thanks!

    Great video. I can agree with your top 5 of things to "hate" about the crf. I changed the backlight with a R&G fender eliminator kit (90 euro's), Tires in the size of the bike aren't expensive neither, so they will be changed when the stocks are worn out also.

    Great video TMF, Seems like a cracking little bike, I've had my eye on the crf for a while... I'm currently holding out for the CRF250L rally which I believe should be along soon and will be interested to hear your views on that one once it's released. All the best.

    you nailed it!! some riders of this bike has said the same as you did... you do have a pretty country to ride in. thanks for sharing with us. I'm from Alabama that were u ride in would make me home sick. it close to what u have.

    Great vid! I was wondering what things you would come up with... I love my CRF 250 L. It's hard to come up with anything really negative. After watching your vid on your mods I followed suit and put the same exhaust etc. on mine. That completed it for me. Great package for the price. The KTM's are probably the best performance but for the price I could buy 2 Hondas and loan one out to friends. LOL

    As an American.....watching you drive on the left side with a POV camera is utterly terrifying....it just messes with everything I know about driving, haha. I'm looking at buying one of these used in couple years to buzz back and forth to work on when the weather is nice......I'd still take one of these over a Harley any day....those have gotten too popular here, lol.

    I've owned a CRF250L here in South Africa for about two years now too. Agree with most of your points, with the exception perhaps of the height; I'm 5'7" and don't have a problem with it - I did in the beginning, but the suspension seems to have settled a tad over time and now I don't notice it. Perhaps it's me just getting used to it. To get on it (I've got a top box on the back) I do the horse-mounting thing; left foot on the footpeg and HUP over the saddle. For me the small tank is an issue, but one can do about 40km AFTER the red bar flashes, so about 200km is possible ~ 120 miles. The headlight sucks, so I've mounted LED auxiliary lights either side and they make a huge difference. The tyres - well, I don't think I'm qualified to comment as, at 57 years old, the tyres can probably outperform me.. Thanks for the vid; I miss the UK; my mum and sister are both there down Orpington way.

      Cheers Steve - glad we largely concur, I found my fuel consumption was hit by the various mods I've done to enhance performance - are you running everything as stock?

      Yep, except for removing the snorkel - which strangely enough helped quite a bit. I'm at 5000ft elevation and the bike seemed to appreciate a bit more air. Hopefully the EFI is coping with it; I've been running without the snorkel for 6 months and so far so good. I'd love to put a Q4 and megabomb on it, but really can't justify the cost. The bike takes me where I want to go without fuss and bother, so I accept its limitations and am very happy with it.

      There is a red bar that flashes on the fuel gauge? I didn't know that. I have had it down so the last bar flashes but I didn't know there was a red bar...

      The red bar doesn't flash; it's a printed-on red bar that is normally hidden by the last black segment. When the black starts flashing on and off, you should see a little red bar in its place.

    I totally agree with the fuel tank capacity. I carry a rotopax on the back BUT very rarely have to use it. I'm curious what tires you went with? In the USA in my opinion it's hard to find good street legal tires that are great off road for this bike. Good video and review!

    After watching your videos I'm pleased to say the crf250l is also now in my stable to complement a 14plate gsa and a mint fire blade. Now begins the mods on the bike. I looked at www.crf only for the FMF exhaust, ejk and power bomb. Is this where you got yours?
    Agree with all your comments especially cleaning the GSA. WHat a mare! I keep mine showroom which I appreciate is not something GS riders approve of but 'each to their own. Great videos, all the very best Clive.

    Hi TMF, greetings from down under. I, like most others that own a 250L agree with all you have said. It is a good all-rounder bike. I have done a few mods to mine and have made it just that bit better. I have kept that stock sprockets as I am getting 34km to 35km per litre. I installed an Acerbis 3.1gal fuel tank and get 350km / 360km out of it. You are a lucky man to be able to ride through the little villages and county side that you have there. Do you ever notice all the history trapped in the buildings and landscape? Watching your vids makes me want to ship my bike over there and ride and explore for a month or more.

    I agree with you that the CRF 250L is a great little bike. I've been very happy with mine. This only issue I have with mine is that it really struggles to make enough power for what I want to do. Trails, gravel roads, etc... are no problem. It's when I ride it on roads where the speed limit is higher (55-70 mph) where I notice the limitations.
    I'm pretty sure the problem is that I'm wanting this bike to do something for which it was not designed; be a 500 or 650. It'll get me up to 70 mph or more, but the throttle is practically wide open to do it.
    Time to shop for another bike?

    I have the M version of this bike. Thought I'd share my thoughts on your hates.
    5... I actually like the stock rear light. Hate what is available aftermarket. They look cheap when they are not.
    4... Ride height is fine for me at being 5'10". Then again mine is less taller than yours with 17 inch rims.
    3... Power. It's a 250cc engine made to be reliable. Tempted to do your mods but cherish the stock quite setup. I manage 120kph on mine. Good enough to play in urban environment where it spends most of its time. It's extra light which helps with power to weight if you're not a hefty rider to spoil things lol
    2... Fuel. I understand your problem but easily solved with an extra tank. not a problem here with a petrol station every stone throw away.
    1... Tires. Mine is different with road tires so can't compare. I was sceptical though since they're of an unknown brand so asked the dealer to change to Dunlops instead. He suggested I'd keep stock tires for 2 years or 3 and then change them as he found them quite grippy. It was good advice. No issues whatsoever.
    Having said all that I had some issues with the headlight not turning on occasionally. They changed a switch under warranty and it was fixed.
    I also had to adjust my thoughts when it came to the turn signal toggle switch. It is where the horn switch normally is. A bit frustrating at first till you get used to it.
    There is a big gap from 1st to second gear. Got some false neutrals at first. You then get used to it and eventually find it helpful in finding neutral to park the bike or in lights.
    That's it. Absolutely love the bike.

    The title had me worried, but nothing major!
    All are fixable and still likely to spend less money than if you bought the competing model from another manufacturer. And each can be addressed over time.

      ...I don't have a problem with dual purpose tyres per se - just the weird set that Honda provide them with, I've since switched out the front for a Michelin and the difference is like night and day...thanks for watching and taking the time to write that lot out, interesting reading.     I'm surprised the front brake line didn't make this list. That's the only thing for which I've not found an easy fix. I'm still enjoying this gutless li'l monster.

      +stilldking I don't have an issue with the brakes on the little CRF - they were rubbish when I first bought it but over time have bedded in a treat and I find them perfectly adequate....in fact braided brake lines may even make them too sharp and prone to lock up, maybe???       +TheMissendenFlyer i think hes referring to the break line coming up from the caliper, somewhat over the speedo and then to the reservoir. When i first got the bike it was a massive eye sore to me, always put me off as its so in your face, so high up and so floppy., but now im use to is. Did you find u had a similar issue when getting the bike? Or did it not bother you so much?

      +GunsOfPlentyNZ You're correct. The brakes themselves are excellent, but the line blocks the speedo or the warning lights or both. I've heard there's a direct replacement for it, but might be restricted from US import since I've not been able to find one.

    Great Video, Recently I have been seriously considering getting my licence (A2) and a couple of my friends have suggested a CRF 250 as a beginner bike. Also would you have any tips for a novice trying to get into motorcycling? It would be great to here you opinion.

    Did you deflate the stock tires to proper off-road levels prior to judging them, or leave them at street pressure levels? ;-) You need to deflate them to about 20 psi to get proper off-road performance.

      Nice scenery in the video, although it takes a while to get comfortable with you driving on the wrong side of the road (LOL). Do you have any video of what your off road trails look like over there?

    PS. If you do 60% on-road, remember that a decent set of knobblys will serve you well on trails but degrade quick on the asphalt thanks to the tread width. I run Bridgestone Battlecross X30R 's on the RMZ which give great grip but are only used on dirt.

      I just strap a small fuel can I got off of E-Bay on the rack on the back in case - just enough to get me to a fuel station if I misjudge things....

    How much did the FMF exhaust and the EJK mod affect the MPG of the bike?
    As standard it knocks out 70 plus MPG I believe.

    Hi, great video Again, you should have a TV show for bikers. I just bought a 2016, 250 L ,completely stock at the moment just running in, loving the bike. Plan to do all the mods you have done , but for now have been searching everywhere for lower fork protector decals the same as you have, i wonder if you could please let me know where you got them from ? . Also your Honda bar pad, my local dealer only supply Renthal ones, cheers Steve.

    It can be worth lowering your tyre pressures on trails so the tyres can deform a bit and thus grip a bit better.
    'course, you'd have to carry a pump with you for going home on the roads but you might get more grip out of the front end by losing 10psi in the traily bits. :)

    Being an 'Inseam-Challenged' rider myself, I get the seat height issue. I passed on the CRF250L because of its seat height and bought a DR200SE Suzuki instead since I can almost flat-foot it. I replaced the tires last year with a set of Motoz Tractionator Enduro I/T tires and it made a big difference. No, actually, it made a HUGE difference.....on the Graded Dirt and Gravel roads, Forest Service roads and Fire roads up in the Rocky Mountain Front Range.

      +TheMissendenFlyer Since it's only a 200cc bike, it's a bit weak in stock trim at only 20Hp/13.7ft.lbs. Has a bit of trouble hauling my 16 Stone up the mountain grades without getting slowed down to 55mph, but I mainly get up into the mountains via the local dirt roads (similar to your Green Lanes).
      Performance-wise, all I've done so far is replace the Exhaust with an FMF and dropped the Front Sprocket down one tooth. Those added more power/pull. EJK and Air Intake change are planned later this year.
      Otherwise, I added Bar Risers to make it more comfortable when standing on the pegs, Barkbusters, DataTool heated grips, Seat Concepts seat, Braided front brake line and better pads, Skid Plate, Headlight Guard, Double Take mirrors (love these), TrailTech TTO Tach/Hour meter.

    Hi there, i went out for a test ride on an almost new Honda crf250m today, the supermoto version of this bike, i absolutely loved the bike and was all set to lay down my cash but about 4 miles in to the test ride i started feeling a lot of high frequency vibration through the bars and pegs, a kind of zzzzzzzz which became very uncomfortable and sent my hands numb, ive riden smaller machines than this before and never felt anything like it, i just wanted to ask you if you feel anything like this through your pegs and bars on the CRF250L ? I was gutted as it was everything i was looking for in a bike but couldn't possibly live with those tingly almost painful vibes sending my hands and feet numb, had to walk away 😞

      +Rhiannon studios Hi - That's very odd, I think it must just have been the bike you rode. I don't get vibes like that on my CRF and didn't get any on the CRFM I test rode a few years back - nor have I heard complaints of excessive vibes before...

    Hi there TMF. Im on my second bike, a f700gs. Ive downgraded from my first bike a cbr 1100 because i wanted sonething lighter, confortable and more fuel efficient. I use the bike to commute every single day and im very happy with the beemer, but taxes and fuel cost are starting to rise again in my country. I really like the crf, would it be ok to commute 120 miles a week? Does it hold 60/70 mph ok? The reason i prefer these type of bikes is to cope better with poor roads. Tks

      +jirodrigues jirodrigues Hi there - 120 miles a week would be no problem on the CRF (120 a day may be a bit hard on the backside!). The bike is low powered but will hold 60mph easily, at 70 you are basically flat out so have little room for overtaking. If you are riding on "normal" roads then this would be a great commuter, if motorways or autobahns forget it!! Thanks for watching - all the best - TMF

      +Sinan Sarper Depends how much you're likely to miss off-road stuff - if it were me, and I could only have the one, then I'd definately take the Vstrom....I don't think you'd regret it. The Vstrom is a proper all rounder where as really the CRF is more of a plaything in my view.

    One more tooth on the rear sprocket makes a good difference in acceleration and low speed trail riding - you lose a bit of top speed but it is not a road racer. I had the Honda XR650L for 13 years. But my first motorcycle in 1978 was the Honda XR250L
    18 other motorcycles in between since 1978

      I found your video by random as usual on RUclips. I never did like going smaller on the front because of the tighter turn radius of the chain. The rear gives you more options - add one add two add maybe three teeth. Or have 2 rear wheels. One with an 80% off road tire and 3 extra teeth and a rear with a 90% street tire and a standard sprocket. Then just switch rear wheels as needed and the chain is adjusted accordingly.
      The wildest motorcycle I had was a 1986 Honda CR5oo open class 2-stroke. 60 horsepower and 230 pounds.
      I was only ever able to ride it wide open throttle was in 2 feet of fresh snow. On hard dirt or a country road it would lift the front wheel at any speed even 80 mph or more :) AH the good old days.

    well i agree with you with the seat height, that's a discussion i made with your Hate list on your GS, Power from stock I think it's not bad but since you live in a big country it's normal you mentioned that. my list should be this,
    1) no folding shift lever straight from the Factory
    2) I hate the mirror design, i prefer that they should be Rounded shape and preferable fold able.
    3) the foot pegs attachment bracket, i don't like so see all that welding around them I prefer that they used another method of attachment and different design, BE Warned they are prone to bending with the Frame.
    4)the shitty plastic skid plate
    5)no adjustability other than preload only on the rear shock ( I know it's meant to be selled cheap, but the suspension is too damn soft. Once you try to gain more confidence in the dirt by speeding a bit more you will see)
    6) and yep, stay away from the Mud with the stock Tires
    other than that...what the heck i LOVE IT
    I replaced my rear shock with a HYPERPRO unit from E-bay, it's a Big difference off road and i also replaced the rear tire with a Continental TKC80, compared to the stock it's great!

    G'day MF, another enjoyable, informative vid. I agree about the tail, Stevie Wonder probably designed it! Point 3 is debatable tho. During a test drive, people shouldn't expect it to be fast. Its design is primarily skewed for use on trails of mud, sand, rocks & logs, rather than being a more road-centric commuter. The beauty is with lights etc., you omit the aggro of needing a van, trailer or a ute to legally get it to the trails you want to ride on but as a jack of all trades it will always be the master of none. However, what the CRF250L sacrifices in road speed it makes up for in enough power to get you through difficult terrain. By contrast, my RMZ450 has a frightening amount of rear wheel torque compared to any roadbike I've ever ridden. Yeah, that's great when you need a shitload of grunt to get you up hills etc., but ride the tits off it in a straight line and it'll still struggle to reach a measly 100kmh! Greater engine compression and a big sprocket is a great recipe for low-end torque but equals lousy gearing for top-end performance. As a hybrid design, your trusty steed will serve you well both on AND off-road, but it's an unfair comparison with the likes of a pure offroader or road specific model. Remember, what your CRF250L loses out on in terms of top speed or raw power, it makes up for in versatility. Enjoy!

    but you don't see back light....regarding height - it is the lowest dirt bike on the market :) Bigger tank means bigger weight what for off-road is not good. Other then that I agree.

    Seems like you might have wanted the 650L. Seems it is only 20 pounds heavier, an inch or two higher and only $1500 more? At that price point you start mulling the idea that the 650 is a far better deal. I have been searching between 250's and 650's and the money and weight etc is so close it's probably worth spending the bit extra for the bigger bike.

      +NicheRiding As a novice off-roader key to my purchase was it had to be road legal and reliable with minimal servicing - criteria that the more sporty off-roaders didn't tend to meet - I'm not familiar with the 650L though, not sure they made/make it for the UK market do they???

      TheMissendenFlyer Hmm I don't know, they essentially are the same bike, but 650 cc and the L stands for Legal for road use from what I understand terminology wise. Maybe when you get some free time, check out the american honda motorcycle site. I went over the full stats comparing each.

I don't plan on riding on the highway often but if I do have to I'd prefer to have the bike that feels and handel's better at higher speeds .

      +TheMissendenFlyer As well as having my CRF250L at home I've had two trips to SE Asia where I've spent a couple of weeks riding one on very variable surfaces. It never fails......seriously tough bike. The seat height even at a lofty 5ft 11in (lol) does become an issue when you get on and off a lot with luggage onboard. Like you say though, to get the suspension travel it's needed. Need a rear rack for mine, not a lot of uk options though. Great videos, keep them coming buddy!

    I had a good look at one in the dealers recently. I felt it looked poorly made and finished as if it had been made by an entirely different company. Stock power seems really low. Rose tinted specs and all that but I'm sure the KLR250 I had back in the 80's was a much better made and finished bike. You look like someone who looks after their stuff but I wonder how well the Honda would fare if it wasn't looked after i.e. cosmetics?

    By the way, i'd highly recommend the Maxxis Maxxcross IT tyres - Just spent a weekend at the Taffy Dakar with these on (again, you should come next year!) and they've been faultless between road and dirt.

    Get a KTM 350, power problem solved for sure! And hydraulic clutch excel wheels etc. Check out a couple of my dirt bike vids all ktms street legal, including my KTM 2009 400 XC-W which I had to gear down for the trail as would do 50mph in 3rd gear and hated 5th at 50mph! Just to tall for technical riding but for commutes such as this is perfect. I miss that English countryside just beautiful!

      Not knocking the Honda it looks like a really fun bike its just on every review owners complain about the power. My friends 2016 KTM 350exc is half a bike length slower than my 2009 KTM 400 XC-W (350 is fuel injected) that's slowing at around 65-70 mph. However my 400 is faster than the KTM 450 (2004) in my videos I am riding with. Weight of rider has a lot to do with it but that 350 turns all you have to do is think about it.
      The exc is a bit soft for me but if you do 50/50 riding would think hard to beat. The one in my video is a limited addition only 20 ( I think) shipped to USA. Another friend has a 2014 350 XC with a few mods and his light arse make the bike a bullet, he wins every drag race and the throttle response is amazing. Really hot when riding here except for 4-5 months out of the year making summer the time to buy a bike here not like the UK. Just got Go-Pro so the videos are not edited working on getting some decent software, any cheap recommendations would be appreciated? Some more drone footage to come, it should follow me on the bike so should be some good dirt bike vids in near future. Give us a like and follow please!

      I weigh 154 lbs have all the stage 1 mods and mine won't go over (an artifically high reading as I have a 13T front sprocket) 70mph....

    You could have bought a Royal Enfield Himalaya, it produces 24.5 bHP w/ it's a 411cc engine, weighing in at 420 lbs

    Hi TMF I known U like your Honda crf it's a peach of a bike . I know this a 3 year old video . I hope u revisit some times I ask u to check out clayton bessell a English man in Australia on utube u will see a crf250l doing what it does best a real capable little bike u dont need big cc to have fun out on the trails . Ro

      Thank you TMF for watching clayton bessell & his channel . He is putting out more videos on the crf & what this bike can do . & tuition in riding the bush . But many of this skill be applied here in England. The crf shouldn't be underestimated it's not all about the cc's I think a lot of people would agree with that .       +TheMissendenFlyer just hit 2000km on mine, holy fuck what an amazing bike. Im just starting to get a hang of really getting into the lean on the corners, has really opened up the bike to me!

    Bought a brand new 2018 CRF250L two days ago. What a gutless heavy box of shit, Cant wait to get rid of it. Too gutless to have any fun on too heavy for offroad. Mine has 48kms on it, would sell half price and cut my losses just to get rid of it. Very dissapointing bike to ride. Very bad investment.

      TheMissendenFlyer when you are short like me and you have been riding for 35 years you learn that you really don't need to put more than the tip of one toe down.
      In fact I can stop my bikes any time and just balance without putting any feet down at all.
      A lot of motocross racers start races using that technique.
