Great video man! I bought a 2020 250L for my first bike and love it. It’s a blast to ride even two years later and I still come home with a smile on my face rain or shine!
My 2017 CRF has 45000k on the original piston, bore and top end and still has full compression, runs hard, starts instantly every time and looks as good as new, no fork leaks or suspension problems at all, only one cam chain tensioner recently needed. It has a chip, FMF exhaust, comp clutch and that's it. I'll run it until it needs a rebuild, but so far it's just not showing any signs of age with that high mileage. I'll keep it forever as it does everything I ask of it really well.

Wasn't sure what to expect with this bike - I have two other bikes: Ducati 1199 Panigale S when I feel the need for speed or to carve the twisties in the Rockies and a Honda VFR800 fitted with factory panniers and trunk for long cross-country trips... but I was missing days gone by riding in the dirt; hence, the CRF250. Started riding 65 years ago (now age 70) in the dirt on a mini bike and eventually began racing 125cc motocross on Spanish Bultaco and German Maico. Packed up the bike, gear and my parents would drive me to the track and at the end of the day they drove me home so I could strip the bike to repair and prep for the next weekends races..... Got older and migrated to road bikes and began racing track again but now was old enough to drive myself with the bikes behind my van on proper trailers. On any Saturday or Sunday feeling the need for speed racing but Monday to Friday found myself spending insane amount of time and money getting ready for the next weekends races. So in retirement I have a Ducati to go fast, a VRF800 sport touring bike when I need to see the country and room for one more bike in the garage. WHY did I need another bike? I missed the dirt and exploring all those trails that diverged in a yellow woods. SO WHY IS THE CRF250L MY ULTIMATE PLAYBIKE? - I live 30 minutes from MacLean Creek near Calgary and can be putting around the foothills of the Rockies very easily. -Throw on the Mosko-Moto panniers and I am camping in the beautiful Rocky Mountains near Banff or Jasper - Can jump on the bike to go and get milk at Sobey's or a spark plug at Canadian Tire - During the latest FUEL crisis it cost me $9 to fill my tank after 2 weeks doing errands around town - I have always wrenched my own bikes (no problem rebuilding and maintaining a Ducati Superbike) and love to tinker on the CRF250L adding the desired but not necessarily needed dirt accessories - My Ducati is a very EXPENSIVE PLAY BIKE - the CRF250 is not! While the Ducati puts a HUGE SMILE on my face each time I ride it, that smile comes with a hefty price tag! For the price of one Ducati OHLINS fork tube I have customized the Honda 250 with brand new Rally Raid suspension, Pro Taper handlebars, Acerbis handguards, Empire skid plated and radiator guards, UNI air filter, Zeta levers, Dunlop 606 tires and on and on and on. - The CRF250 is fun to ride, does not ask me to spend hours on maintenance and is cheap to gas or repair. - After market accessories are abundant - My 17 year old granddaughter is learning how to ride bikes on the CRF250L! She cannot hurt this bike and she feels confident on it - which is very important for any aspiring rider. At age 70 probably the most surprising thing is that this bullet proof Honda is the perfect bike for me to have fun on - a Jack of all trades but Master of none. I smile every time I get on this bike... Ultimate Play Bike? If not the the ULIMATE it is certainly a serious contender!!!!

I bought this bike to try a little dirt riding 5 years ago. Since then I've done everything on it. Commuting. Touring. Forest roads. Single track. Amateur races. I hope Honda keeps making it for a long time to come. Has never let me down. Just wish there were more offerings in this class -- there's not much else like it.
Great video! I've had a LOT of bikes over my lifetime and still do! But I think it boils down to having the right tool for the job. For what you are doing it is very good. And the quality is outstanding! I use mine for ride/camping and I can attest this is the absolute most comfortable bike I'e ever had. And when you're doing 12 hour rides, that is where it REALLY matters!
This was high on the list of bikes I was considering until I saw how much it weighed, so that knocked it down a few notches. Watching you rip through those woods trails has me thinking about it again!

I have a 2019, it's heavy, but it's fun. I put Ohlins shock & fork kit over this past winter and I'm loving the stiffer, smoother feel, though I haven't done much off roading yet.
Great Vid! It takes an experienced rider to honestly appreciate what these bikes are. So nice to see someone else actually RIDE these 250 dual sports offroad fast and hard. Most of the hate these get are from Noobs thinking that the low power is a negative cuz they ride on the road, and not understanding that they are geared 3T to 6T too high OEM to be practical for anything. After gearing down, 25hp on the trails is a blast cuz you can pin it in 1st-3rd gears and actually hook up, with just enough to pick up the front wheel or spin/slide when u want to. Its so controllable and these motors stall hard so its a hoot tackling hard enduro for short sections cuz its challenging your skill, not the bikes. They are heavy for long enduro trips, but the most fun is exactly what this guy just did. A mix of back roads, city, trails....ditches, power lines, staircases, places you shouldnt be but got into cuz these bikes make it so easy to sneak in/out LOL. I just bought a '18 KLX250 for the second time in 4 years cuz Im tired of my high strung and high maintenance enduro bikes and trucking so far to trail...I just missed exploring on my KLX. After all the experience I got from riding hard enduro past few years, I just set this KLX up similar to my race bikes and am impressed. Tires, sprockets, sag/suspension adjustments and its really capable for the times I do want to hit single track.
I bought a 2020 with 1000 miles and it has a Mosko Moto full rack with saddle bags and a duffle bag plus a tank bag! I bought it for Street riding bc my 2021 Toyota 4Runner is a gas hog and gas cost 4.50 a gallon so this is the perfect answer for my financial situation. I live in Boynton Beach Florida so there's lots of people and can be dangerous because I'm not anywhere near trails like out west or up in the mountains so I hope I stay safe and enjoy this motorcycle and save gas.
$4.5 a gallon? That's what it is here in Central Ontario too (adjusted for US currency). That's quite surprising actually as the price in Florida is usually much, much better than here. Keep your eyes peeled and stay safe!
I've just been offered one for 2 grand English... I'm selling my Kwak 750z and giving it a go. I'm tired of trying not to die on the road and this video just swung the sale. It's OK all round, economical and reliable.... Can't wait to Potter about and have fun..... Although on the test ride its got rock tires and it felt awful to road it, I'll swap them out for something all terain. Great video and I totaly get your advice on how you ride, I felt like everything you said struck chords in my heart. Peace ✌️

I rode back in there a few times last year and the year before. Took Kain back there once or twice too. I made most of that single track - I'm gonna ride it!
Totally agree! I have a 2014 model as well as an 2018 NC750X. The little CRF is still my favorite to ride except for going on the highway of course! Love riding the little CRF250 on the Transamerica Trail and BDR type rides. Bought the NC for long touring road rides but I actually have toured more on the CRF! I’m sure the 300 is even better! If I could only have on bike it would be a little CRF250L or a 300. I have also thought about the CRF450rl in that group but for the lighter weight and more power but thought it was too expensive. This thought of having to upgrade the ECU and having to do all the maintenance ruled it out for now! Love these types of bikes!
The Crf250l is definitely forgiving, predictable and reliable. It’s not a torque beast but it’s more than enough to have fun on and off-road. Once you change the gearing, chain, clutch/springs, exhaust, headlight, taillight, add protaper bars/risers, trim the seat, change the pegs, install some Kenda pro master tires plus all other accessories it really transforms the bike into a bike you can be proud to own. I can do some serious off-roading in rough terrain, hit some really steep hills with ease , including hitting some smaller jumps and this little bike can handle it all. It’s very stable on and off-road the rest is up to the rider. I have come across riders in the hills with some really capable bikes like actual dirt bikes/dual sports and they won’t even dare to hit the steep hills my brother and I ride. This bike is definitely a keeper, most rider with high powered dual sports seem scared of their bikes because they’re unpredictable at times and they are unable to advance in skill because they are terrified of their bike. The Crf250l is just about perfect 👍 for almost everything except the freeway, mostly cause everyone in Southern California drives like sh!t making the highway far too dangerous. Other than that the Crf250l is perfect, it can take a beating and when it comes to reliability it’s second to none in this category.
Great video. I had a used 2017 CRF250L and since 2020 put around 10k km on it. One month ago I upgraded to a CRF300L. So far I have done 300 km on it and I´m still running it in. For sure the 300L is improved however the 250L is still a very capable bike and for just all round general road/ trail riding you cant go wrong with it. If you are a new rider or older returning rider like me save yourself the extra $$$ over a new 300L and find a well cared for used CRF250L
@@aileenfresa1120 If in sound condition I would say it is a good deal. The 2017 has all the upgrades over the earlier version including ABS. Alternative is a new CRF300L for twice that amount
You really showcase the bike well. Old time dirt biker here 65. Has switched over to street riding mainly due to lack of dirt. I really miss riding off-road and I've been looking at buying the 300. But it's going to need to pull double duty.

i came from a 450r to a 250l it's an ok street bike not as comfortable as my street glide . but in the trails its a big heavy pig with no power i have an aftermarket pipe and tuner and its still terrible on the trails the suspension is way to soft forget about jumping anything unless you like the feeling of bottoming out and you can forget about climbing a hill in anything but 1st gear what it's good for is cruising backroads and riding gravel roads that about all its good for i had this bike for 4 years only thing i can say as a positive it starts every time and had no mechanical issues i may try the 300l or the 450l and see how that goes. i do not recomend the 250l period. unless you just want to ride backroads and gravel roads. if you buy one be prepared to buy better offroad tires the stock is complete junk off road. dont get me wrong this bike is awesome on blacktop backroads that's where this bike shines.
as far as wheelies are concerned be in first and you have to crank on the throttle and the clutch to bring the front end up that should tell you alot about this bike
yes i watched the video i have the same pipe you do i dont have the powerbomb though also have the same tail light delete its fine for the trail riding like you did in the video but in technical bad uphilll trails is where this bike fails just to heavy and not enough power for my taste good video though @@patoneill555
The FE350 will definitely go 10k km with oil changes every 3k km.... especially if it's ridden at a pace where a 250L could keep up with it. I think what you get with the 250/300l is a motor that is very smooth and happy on the road, and ABS brakes. I won't want to ride my 350 50 miles down the highway to get to a riding area, but I will ride a CRF L there, though I still won't be super happy about it.
I suppose, however my question would be why would I purchase an FE350 only to ride "at a pace where a 250L could keep up with it", on top of what you also mentioned how: "I won't want to ride my 350 50 miles down the highway to get to a riding area" ? I personally would prefer to keep a few thousand $$$ in my pocket and enjoy a bike that when I'm out of the woods has "a motor that is very smooth and happy on the road" plus has an additioanl 2,000 km oil change interval. And it's definitely the better dual-sport bike of the two, because of it's excellent road manners (low vibe engine, and super tall 6th gear) I was just pointing out that you're a bit overly-critical of the maintenance of the other bikes. Lots of people are dual sporting them with much longer-than recommended service intervals and it's been success stories for the last decade. Some have 800-1000 hours on the stock engine. Others swap pistons at 50 hours per the factory recommendation. It's often said that the KTM service intervals are super safe recommendations for advanced racing use. More casual riders who don't use the RPM, and HP just don't put stress and heat on he parts and wear the system as quickly, hence the intervals can be extended safely. What assumptions did Honda make when they made their recommendations? And should you shorten the service intervals if you ride it like a race bike, and not a trail bike? Either way, the best 'play bike' is subjective. It's whatever bike you have available and are having fun on. It can be a trials bike or a GSA. Why would you buy a 350 when the 300l is super fun and does everything you want it to? You wouldn't! The 300 rocks. Keep tearing it up!
I rode this bike all the way up a mountain. It outpaced me haha. Very very trusty. The best part was getting to ride to the brewery after for après! 😝 dual sport life!
I have one and feel it needs to be a bit bigger! The fame just above where the skid plate comes to is getting hammered on mine but I do ride in very rocky terrain
Curious how you get the lift like you do. Ride my brothers bike like this abs had hard time to get front end up. I don’t really hear you revving it to the max and dumping the clutch ?
I try to keep the motor right in the meat of the power as often as possible, unless I'm in more technical terrain. This way all it really takes is shifting your weight back and giving it a good tug.

I live in Cambridge area and not many places to ride anymore so seeing some of those trails that are too far away makes me want to join the Ontario trails. I’ve got a 2017 crf250L and a Royal Enfield classic 500 and they’re both inexpensive trusty workhorses. Combined cost is still less than a Harley or KTM which are popular here in Australia. Do you do your own servicing or take it into the shop? Enjoyable video 👍🏻

I really like your bike. I’m currently shopping for a 250L The Acerbics oversized tank looks great. It looks like a perfect match. Is it basically just a quick swap out?
34 000km, not even a valve check, just about 6-7 oil changes, 2 coolant and brake fluid changes, about 4 air filters, 1 chain set, no bearings anywhere, even the fork seals are stock. Kind of riding I do is nowhere near what you do, but I get it out there, never been a commuter bike for me and never will. Sits muddy in the garage for weeks sometimes, key on, starter, ride.
You definitely get the most out of that bike! Are you running the stock gearing? I have a 2018 and am considering going to go to a 42T drive sprocket with a new chain. Would like 2nd to be a more technical gear. Please let me know
This guy is me on the other side of the planet. The only difference is I haven't competed off road haha. But I also wanted a KTM 350 exc but ended up on a 250L and after some mods, I love it for the exact same reasons.

I have the 2018 CRF250 L rally I got it with 172 MI and I have over 3000 in my first year I love that bike my buddy has the 2018 KLX 250 and we're always racing the shit out of these bikes they were dead tied from the factory now mine is tuned with slip-on exhaust and I can beat him up a little bit these bikes are just amazing so fun to ride people act like the 300 is what you have to have I'm here to tell you the 250 is the shit and if you get one I'm sure you'll be happy with it I'm beyond happy with my rally 250🤷💯%🔥
b u t the SEAT is worthless --> so hard ! Short distance is OK but more than 100 km would be a nightmare ! At least a Gel-Seat is needed on top of the Seat. Otherwise a good bike. Forgot to mention the heat on the right leg, nasty but nothing is perfect I guess (even not Honda).
Can't say I'm a big fan of comfort seats, but then again I've spent most of my time on race bikes and MTB where comfort is the last thing to be considered 😂.
I have had this comment twice on this video. If you have experience with handlebars, you will know aluminum bars are much stronger and less prone to bending when dropped.
I have answered this before in the comments, Lol. So, I'm not sure if maybe you are all new to riding and aren't aware of this, or maybe you just feel the need to correct me. However, an aluminum bar will not bend as easily as a steel bar.
@@patoneill555 interesting since steel is stronger than aluminum it might be different on handlebars. Anyways thanks for sharing your knowledge. Another good thing about aluminum is that it does not get rusty as steel does. My aluminum tools are usually clean compare to my steel tools that get rust even with humidity.

Best bike ever in my opinion, had to sell my 2017 crf250l due to moving and having nowhere to put it. Moving again soon so am on the hunt for another!

I've just been offered one for 2 grand English... I'm selling my Kwak 750z and giving it a go. I'm tired of trying not to die on the road and this video just swung the sale. It's OK all round, economical and reliable.... Can't wait to Potter about and have fun..... Although on the test ride its got rock tires and it felt awful to road it, I'll swap them out for something all terain. Totally agree! I have a 2014 model as well as an 2018 NC750X. The little CRF is still my favorite to ride except for going on the highway of course! Love riding the little CRF250 on the Transamerica Trail and BDR type rides. Bought the NC for long touring road rides but I actually have toured more on the CRF! I’m sure the 300 is even better! If I could only have on bike it would be a little CRF250L or a 300. I have also thought about the CRF450rl in that group but for the lighter weight and more power but thought it was too expensive. This thought of having to upgrade the ECU and having to do all the maintenance ruled it out for now! Love these types of bikes!
Just bought a 250L a few weeks ago. With under 2000 miles and hope to put many more on it. I agree it's probably the perfect play bike.

The Crf250l is definitely forgiving, predictable and reliable. It’s not a torque beast but it’s more than enough to have fun on and off-road. Once you change the gearing, chain, clutch/springs, exhaust, headlight, taillight, add protaper bars/risers, trim the seat, change the pegs, install some Kenda pro master tires plus all other accessories it really transforms the bike into a bike you can be proud to own. I can do some serious off-roading in rough terrain, hit some really steep hills with ease , including hitting some smaller jumps and this little bike can handle it all. It’s very stable on and off-road the rest is up to the rider. I have come across riders in the hills with some really capable bikes like actual dirt bikes/dual sports and they won’t even dare to hit the steep hills my brother and I ride. This bike is definitely a keeper, most rider with high powered dual sports seem scared of their bikes because they’re unpredictable at times and they are unable to advance in skill because they are terrified of their bike. The Crf250l is just about perfect 👍 for almost everything except the freeway, mostly cause everyone in Southern California drives like sh!t making the highway far too dangerous. Other than that the Crf250l is perfect, it can take a beating and when it comes to reliability it’s second to none in this category.

Great video. I had a used 2017 CRF250L and since 2020 put around 10k km on it. One month ago I upgraded to a CRF300L. So far I have done 300 km on it and I´m still running it in. For sure the 300L is improved however the 250L is still a very capable bike and for just all round general road/ trail riding you cant go wrong with it. If you are a new rider or older returning rider like me save yourself the extra $$$ over a new 300L and find a well cared for used CRF250L

You really showcase the bike well. Old time dirt biker here 65. Has switched over to street riding mainly due to lack of dirt. I really miss riding off-road and I've been looking at buying the 300. But it's going to need to pull double duty.

i came from a 450r to a 250l it's an ok street bike not as comfortable as my street glide . but in the trails its a big heavy pig with no power i have an aftermarket pipe and tuner and its still terrible on the trails the suspension is way to soft forget about jumping anything unless you like the feeling of bottoming out and you can forget about climbing a hill in anything but 1st gear what it's good for is cruising backroads and riding gravel roads that about all its good for i had this bike for 4 years only thing i can say as a positive it starts every time and had no mechanical issues i may try the 300l or the 450l and see how that goes. i do not recomend the 250l period. unless you just want to ride backroads and gravel roads. if you buy one be prepared to buy better offroad tires the stock is complete junk off road. dont get me wrong this bike is awesome on blacktop backroads that's where this bike shines.
as far as wheelies are concerned be in first and you have to crank on the throttle and the clutch to bring the front end up that should tell you alot about this bike

The FE350 will definitely go 10k km with oil changes every 3k km.... especially if it's ridden at a pace where a 250L could keep up with it. I think what you get with the 250/300l is a motor that is very smooth and happy on the road, and ABS brakes. I won't want to ride my 350 50 miles down the highway to get to a riding area, but I will ride a CRF L there, though I still won't be super happy about it.
I suppose, however my question would be why would I purchase an FE350 only to ride "at a pace where a 250L could keep up with it", on top of what you also mentioned how: "I won't want to ride my 350 50 miles down the highway to get to a riding area" ? I personally would prefer to keep a few thousand $$$ in my pocket and enjoy a bike that when I'm out of the woods has "a motor that is very smooth and happy on the road" plus has an additioanl 2,000 km oil change interval.

The CRF L is very capable in good hands. And it's definitely the better dual-sport bike of the two, because of it's excellent road manners (low vibe engine, and super tall 6th gear)
I was just pointing out that you're a bit overly-critical of the maintenance of the other bikes. Lots of people are dual sporting them with much longer-than recommended service intervals and it's been success stories for the last decade. Some have 800-1000 hours on the stock engine. Others swap pistons at 50 hours per the factory recommendation.
It's often said that the KTM service intervals are super safe recommendations for advanced racing use. More casual riders who don't use the RPM, and HP just don't put stress and heat on he parts and wear the system as quickly, hence the intervals can be extended safely.
What assumptions did Honda make when they made their recommendations? And should you shorten the service intervals if you ride it like a race bike, and not a trail bike?
Either way, the best 'play bike' is subjective. It's whatever bike you have available and are having fun on. It can be a trials bike or a GSA.
Why would you buy a 350 when the 300l is super fun and does everything you want it to? You wouldn't! The 300 rocks. Keep tearing it up!
I rode this bike all the way up a mountain. It outpaced me haha. Very very trusty. The best part was getting to ride to the brewery after for après! 😝 dual sport life!

I have one and feel it needs to be a bit bigger! The fame just above where the skid plate comes to is getting hammered on mine but I do ride in very rocky terrain

Curious how you get the lift like you do. Ride my brothers bike like this abs had hard time to get front end up. I don’t really hear you revving it to the max and dumping the clutch ?
I try to keep the motor right in the meat of the power as often as possible, unless I'm in more technical terrain. This way all it really takes is shifting your weight back and giving it a good tug.

I live in Cambridge area and not many places to ride anymore so seeing some of those trails that are too far away makes me want to join the Ontario trails. I’ve got a 2017 crf250L and a Royal Enfield classic 500 and they’re both inexpensive trusty workhorses. Combined cost is still less than a Harley or KTM which are popular here in Australia. Do you do your own servicing or take it into the shop? Enjoyable video 👍🏻

34 000km, not even a valve check, just about 6-7 oil changes, 2 coolant and brake fluid changes, about 4 air filters, 1 chain set, no bearings anywhere, even the fork seals are stock. Kind of riding I do is nowhere near what you do, but I get it out there, never been a commuter bike for me and never will. Sits muddy in the garage for weeks sometimes, key on, starter, ride.

This guy is me on the other side of the planet. The only difference is I haven't competed off road haha. But I also wanted a KTM 350 exc but ended up on a 250L and after some mods, I love it for the exact same reasons.

I have the 2018 CRF250 L rally I got it with 172 MI and I have over 3000 in my first year I love that bike my buddy has the 2018 KLX 250 and we're always racing the shit out of these bikes they were dead tied from the factory now mine is tuned with slip-on exhaust and I can beat him up a little bit these bikes are just amazing so fun to ride people act like the 300 is what you have to have I'm here to tell you the 250 is the shit and if you get one I'm sure you'll be happy with it I'm beyond happy with my rally 250🤷💯%🔥

Since when is aluminum stronger than steel?
I have had this comment twice on this video. If you have experience with handlebars, you will know aluminum bars are much stronger and less prone to bending when dropped.
Aluminum is not stronger than steel. Lighter yes. I got the same bike. They are good machines
I have answered this before in the comments, Lol. So, I'm not sure if maybe you are all new to riding and aren't aware of this, or maybe you just feel the need to correct me. However, an aluminum bar will not bend as easily as a steel bar.
@@patoneill555 interesting since steel is stronger than aluminum it might be different on handlebars. Anyways thanks for sharing your knowledge. Another good thing about aluminum is that it does not get rusty as steel does. My aluminum tools are usually clean compare to my steel tools that get rust even with humidity.
