I have both the R1S & Tesla Y. The rivian is so far behind on autopilot. The Tesla can absolutely do merges and drive around town easily. It's disappointing that the rivian can't even do lane assist unless you are on certain highways. Why can't it be enabled on a surface street?
Agree. Tesla had a huge head start though. It sounds like Rivian has big plans for their driver assist suite so we will have to see where things go with that. Tesla will continue to get exponentially better as times goes on with their AI based system and dojo super compute.
My prior 2020 Honda Ridgeline and 2018 VW Atlas both had decent Lane Keep Assist, and those vehicles were made 4 and 6 years ago, and didn't have nearly the level of tech that a Rivian has. This is very disappointing for a $100k vehicle.
Thanks for the video. I’m watching in anticipation of the 2026 R2, and having experienced steering assist for the first time today in a Kia Forte rental. That system was pretty competent in 95% of the turns at 70+ mph, but drifted when the right lines broke for off ramps, and more aggressive curves on the freeway. I probably steered only 5% of what I would have for my 4 hr trip. That being said, reducing driver input by 95% does not equate to reducing attention span 95% - I probably paid 25% less attention. And it’s not something I’d rely on for surface driving. I hope Rivian makes significant progress in time for the R2 though.
I believe they will make significant progress. Its a huge help on longer road trip and it does also work at low speeds. The system does a good job of displaying alerts when there are merges or the road curves up ahead. Its amazing what Rivian has done in such a short period of producing cars.
With the exception of the roads it covers, I've had a pretty good experience w/ Driver+. Some ping ponging and I feel it slows too much on some modest corners when not necessary (e.g. slows from 65 down to 60 or lower). Any insights into improvements to coverage? There are a lot of 2 lane highways I use and none of those are covered. Wondering if Rivian is concerned Driver+ not good enough to handle 2 lane highways (1 lane each direction).
Thanks for sharing. I can't answer about expanding coverage. You could be right about undivided highways with two way traffic. I believe Rivian plans to introduce a more advanced system so we will have to wait and see what that includes. It's a good system for such a new car maker IMO.
That makes sense... FWIW the Rivian system is pretty good when compared to the base Tesla package which only includes lane keeping or standard auto pilot. To get the auto park and auto lane change there is an upcharge but the Tesla system is years ahead of everyone else and AFAIK is the only one using AI.
What Rivian has isn’t m😢different from Tesla. I have a BMW iX50 (2024) that truly has hands free driving on interstates. You can completely let go of the steering wheel once engaged and you don’t need to touch the wheel unless the system disengages or you want to disengage it on your own.
Our family also owns a 21 Honda Pilot touring. I haven't driven an MDX in a long time. The Rivian feels much higher quality inside and has a lot more high tech features. The ride in the Rivian is not as nice as an MDX I'm sure since the Rivian is an adventure vehicle. The nice thing about the Rivian is that you can adjust the suspension damping from soft/moderate/firm settings. The standard ride height provides the best ride. Reliability is probably not as good but it's not horrible. The biggest challenge is the wait for a service appointment. They will prioritize your appointment if it's a serious problem but something more minor can take a month or two to get service appointment. With all that said, it's an awesome vehicle and we enjoy them more each time we get behind the wheel.
Have a 2018 MDX and a new R1S quad. Night and day - the MDX does ride nicer and is a nice vehicle but it's a dog in terms of acceleration and it also has less overall room inside (at least feels that way). I feel like I can pack more stuff in the R1S for kids, dogs, long trips, etc. Rivian interior is nicer. Haven't had any trouble w my R1S but important to note that often for minor things they will send a technician to your house - no driving needed. One of my favorite things about Tesla and Rivian.
Coming from a Tesla with FSD v12.. holy crap this is so far behind. I've been looking at something new to check out, but the lack of true competition with FSD is holding me back.
@@ElectrifiedOutdoors Yes! I did try it on a Hummer EV. It was substantially better than what I had anticipated. The problem with swapping to something else right now is that I put in my work address, pull out of my driveway, engage FSD and I don't do anything until I pull into a parking spot. That level of automation is going to be difficult to give up, and the vehicle really needs to do something else extraordinarily well for me to justify going with a different brand.
I think the "late" slowdown might be due to the follow distance. I have the same issue on my Tesla Model 3 when I have it set to 3 car lengths, but no such issue when it's set to 5 car lengths.
This is pretty much a dealbreaker for me for getting a Rivian. Not having Android Auto also kind of is, but if I can't have that I would at least want a more capable autopilot.
not commenting to be political i swear, but when you said you disabled mid-roll adds i could have sworn you said 'liberal ads to improve viewer experience' and i was like "i mean you do you but was that like....a problem you were having?" haha. funny how our brains can jump to such random places sometimes.
@@ElectrifiedOutdoors they have to start somewhere, and maybe with the new hardware rivian will make progress. Or just license what Tesla has to offer. I’m not crazy about Tesla, but with autopilot my 13 year old can drive it. It’s that good 99%
Tesla is less about being a car company and more about their technology. I think the licensing of their ADAS will be where the real value is for Tesla shareholders. Will be interesting to see what Rivian does with the Rivian autonomy platform.
I agree that various OEMs should not try to reinvent the wheel. Tesla is so far ahead on this…they are at least a decade ahead of all the competitors with ADAS
It's like nuclear fusion, always next year. Disclaimer I'm a Tesla owner and enjoy autopilot feature very much. I think at some point they will make it, but than it's probably be common thing among all automakers.
Thank you sir for disabling ads! You are a hero for all of humanity=) I love my R1S too
Without viewers like you we wouldn't be able to turn off the mid roll ads. Thank you for your viewership and support.
Dude, if you are so upset about ads, why not get a premium subscription? You got an r1s I'm sure you can afford that.

Any idea on when their suite is set to release?? I'm in North nj and haven't found a single hwy that it works on!
Great question. While I have no idea I think the safest answer is "soon" 😁

Why is all this important? Shouldn't people just know how to drive? Doesn't this dummy down peoples' driving skills?
Thanks for the no ad interpreting the videos!
Our pleasure!

The interior looks amazing!!!
I think so too!
Good to do the test in the rain because that is closer to real world conditions.

The only reason I am holding off getting Rivian. Driver plus needs to be as good as Tesla and Hyundai’s…

Does your + disengage when you let go of the wheel???
not immediately, it'll warn you to keep hands on wheel, but if you still decide to keep hands off wheel it'll disengage.
@@HmSultan02 mine is kicking me completely off as soon as my hand leaves. Kind of infuriating lol I liked the old version.
No, only if I keep my hands off and ignore the prompts to place my hands on the wheel.

Disabling mid video ads earned a like!
How does tbe R1S compare to the Acura MDX? I’m so used to Honda and Toyota reliability that I’m sure there’s a step back going to Rivian.

Have you tried GMs Super Cruise? It can't do city streets like FSD but works very very well on highway and in stop-and-go traffic.

How is the noise inside on highway driving?
Some vehicles have wind noise. I have a video on how to fix a common source of wind noise.
Again, glad Rivian did this auto resume option, but not sure why it took this long, when Volvo had that feature in their Pilot Assist back in 2018.

Dude, stop camping in the passing lane.
It needs to be WAY more aggressive about getting up to the higher speed- this is my #1 complaint of Driver +
i really wanted the update, but i got a lot of personal opinions and something about your wife and daughter and a train barn or something
I appreciate your honest feedback. Sorry my videos are more of a vlog style.

About 6-8 years behind Tesla.
Its very helpful and I agree Tesla is about 10 years ahead of everyone else in the space. Will be hard for others to catch up with Tesla now.
