Sade is one of those singers who serves you "atmosphere" in place of vocals. Her tone & vibe puts you in a mood that is independent of mood & vocal acrobatics.
Yes this! She is more reserved, because her vocals aren't really meant to be the "point" of her music if that makes sense. It's definitely about atmosphere and working with the instruments instead of trying to sing over them. Another example is Billie Ellish. She can definitely sing, but actively chooses to have a whisper like tone in some of her songs, because of style and the way she wants it to work with the music, instead of trying to be music. Idk if that last part made sense, but yeah.

A good analysis, from a vocalese perspective. I find Sade to be mesmerizing. I agree with most comments. SADE is a LEGEND. Music (for the most part) takes its listener to 'some place' in time. This is why music is so adoring, so wonderful. As majestic as Sarah Vaughan, Roberta Flack, and sooooo many others "voices" were, I don't enjoy their music because they 'Sang their faces off'. No. Their music takes me back to when I was a child and hearing my Mother singing in the kitchen while she prepared food..etc. So yes some people enjoy music for its melodic tones... but for most people we are not wondering what register someone is singing...etc.. No. For most people music brings with it a Nostalgic 'time warp' that takes us to wonderful places in our lives.

She doesn’t do much vocally yes, but the little that she does sounds amazing and is rare. I'm so glad that you agree that she's a contralto. I've heard people try to make the case that she's a mezzo, and I see where they're coming from, but I really just think her timbre is much too androgynous throughout most of her range to consider her feminine enough to be a mezzo. Love her voice & music though! & Great video as always! I'd love to see a P!nk and Demi Lovato analysis some time in future by the way :)
Thank you so much!! i'm glad you agree too! yea, that cavernous sound and how it thins so low is definitely characteristic of a contralto... ok yea, those are great voices to analyze
The comment is appreciated. In my humble opinion Sade Adu has a feminine voice, I've never thought she was androgynous. To me, she sounds like a mezzo to be exact. I guess she does have a lot of richness and quality in her voice and you may get the androgynous sound from that. But from my opinion she sounds very much feminine with a rich, honey, and smokey voice or tone; kind of like Toni Braxton.
Your vocal analyses are so spot on! :-) When you were having the discussion about where singers placed their hooks and were looking for another singer’s comparable note placement to Sade’s E4, I was thinking to myself “hmmm maybe A4.” Then you said it, and I was like”ha! I get exactly what she is talking about!” Your commentaries are awesome!!
I've been exploring Sade's music only recently, and I was looking for an analysis of her style from someone who can break it down for me. Really appreciated your take on Sade, even if the video was on the short side. I think you're right that, while Sade's vocals are great, they're not highly technical, and that's okay. Thanks for the video.
I love me some Sade!!! She's my all-time favorite female singer! I used to think that Sade was a contralto but then as I've gotten older, I realized that she's more of a mezzo cuz her voice is a little too bright and feminine to be considered a contralto. I understand that contraltos can come in all shades and colors just like any other voice type but I just don't think that Sade would fit into the contralto vocal fach but that's just my opinion. Also, I heard Sade sing all the way up to like a G#5 in head voice in a vocal range video that somebody did a while just to let you know.
Could you possibly do a vocal analysis on B.Slade/Tonèx? I think he's one of the greatest. I would love to hear your analysis on Luke James. Also, I know you did an analysis on Beyoncé wayyyy back in the day but I would love to hear your take on her voice since then.
I'm going to have to go and keep posting this until you finally do it one day but i need more information on Wé McDonald. Or Michel'le and people who sing like them. How do they have such a soft, baby talking voice but sing a such powerful voice?
Thanks for that but I have some questions and thoughts. Not everyone knows what you mean by "singing" - perhaps you could explain this term when you use it in your videos. Maybe Sade hasn't had voice training or hasn't had much and maybe that's why she doesn't do more with her voice. And maybe that's also why she does some of the other things you mentioned. I say this because i've only just started having training with a classical teacher and it has changed they way I approach singing completely. For instance, i'm now transitioning much higher than I used to which is giving me a stronger sound higher up. We are working a lot on my middle register. Maybe Sade never had the benefit of this. Also when you said she is throaty, you could demonstrate that and its alternative. Without these sorts of explanations, I think your video may not be well understood by people who aren't already trained or in training with good teachers. .... Once I listened to you do something with narrow vowels and I do love your classical voice.
I think that Sade sings like she does because of the music's design. Her music is abstract, but also laid back and very sophisticated. So, her voice mimics that style and the band accompanies it oh so well.
I was just listening to Is It A Crime and wondered why Sade voice itself seemed very..... one tone-ish? I mean there isn't a lot of variety in her notes. Don't get me wrong I loved (and still do) her songs, but in terms of skill I wasn't completely sold on her actually being a very good singer. She seemed a little above average. I definitely left this video with a new appreciation for Sade (and I learned how to actually pronounce her name). Even if she wasn't capable of more, I'd still listen because the way she sings seems very human and not overly "pretty" or "stylized" like other artists not that that's a bad thing either though. This video made me realize Sade voice works with the instruments, her voice feels equal to everything else, and not like it's the main thing to focus on. Also, your voice is very beautiful ❤️.
hello. I have been digging thru your videos and didn't notice a vocal analysis of Chante Moore. I would love to hear your thoughts. also are you still doing truthful Tuesdays?
It would be a bit much bit could you also individually do an analysis on the new group June's Diary or if it's too much then just Kristal and Ashly from the group
I sing low like a man deep that's my comfortable range but when I go high it's not my best 😅 but then when I sing in opera I can sing high What would be my voice type? 🤔
that's really informative on Sade, I like her voice. Dileesa, I was wondering if I could put in a suggestion for a vocal analysis on an artist. I would vote for Sam Cooke. :) if not its okay just a suggestion. thanks in any case I learn a lot from these videos.
can you do KMichelle? When she first arrived in the music scene I loved her, and I've noticed her style has change or her voice... not really sure but something happened. Also, I think has been playing around with a touch of autotune (again not sure) but what do you think?
Also, Alicia Keys? Not sure if you have an analysis on her already but I've never been a major can fan of her voice. I feel that she just screams. The production of her music in earlier years was nice but vocally idk. Listen to "Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart" my fave, And "Girl On Fire" hate it. Lol
First of all, I really did not want to say this to you ma'am but Sade is magical, lyrical, inventive, unique and her unusual beauty goes without saying. She is one of those artists that you either get her and allow her to take you on a journey with her strikingly lovely sound and killer band to back her up. Regardless as how a lot of people try to discredit her talent and her soulful expression in all of her songs and her music. She can sell out a concert worldwide in less than 2 hours, also puts on one of the best live performances that its is KNOWN THAT'S SHE IS ABLE TO PERFORM LIVE AND SOUND BETTER THAN SHE DID WHEN SHE CUT THE RECORD AND HAVE HER AUDIENCE ON THEIR FEET THE WHOLE TIME. NOW I need to clap back at you on a few things SIS!! No...she is not for Broadway, Church, Ghetto Fabulous, Opera, or a Siistah who thinks she can sing but in not impressive at all (YOU) nor is she a hater either. When I watch you talk about her, with your face all screwed up and rolling your eyes all up in your head and looking down and at a loss of words trying not to sound negative but you do anyway, it is clear that you are not a fan which is cool. But don't downgrade this woman's mastery and NO ONE can sing like her. Your little rendition of whatever that was ...was TIRED at best and you have no business tryna evaluate one of the Top Ten most successful female artists in the World. She holds the highest paying contract with Epic Records. She is a sexy, soulful, siren that no one can copy, Hate to say it but you sound jealous and your voice's nothingness and typical sistah tone is done, did, and dead. Can I say...where is your contract sugar? My advice to you is to go to one of her live performances and you still may not be a fan. but I'll bet you'll come away with a much different opinion and respect one of our Queen Divas. She is up there with the best....even Beyonce' says she has to bow down to her and so did Moriah Carey. So sis...go warm a chair somewhere and join the audience while watching her brand SOAR right in front of your face. Please don't do her. It comes off like someone whom thinks they can sing and is just jealous from the very beginning of the video. You could not come up with one thing to credit her for, not even her unique style. We don't need anymore YOUS. Peace SIS!

Never understood the fanfare surrounding her; she has no vocal range, and personally, vocal range (they don't have to be as expansive as Minnie Riperton or Mariah Carey) is a significant part of what appeals to me in a singer.
@bonnibling it's her Tone when you have a pretty Voice you have half the battle won already. She does not do alot vocally which is unfortunate because she can do alot more with her voice more then she probably realizes. However if ain't broke why fix it. She has made great money off her voice/sound but still maintain her own privacy/personal life. Which is Beautiful.
@@joelprince4170 That's an unfounded assumption to say she has more capability than she realizes, and if assuming you were right, I don't know one successful performer who would deliberately choose to suppress any aspect of their talent, and why the heck would they?!? She could still live her live as she chooses, even if she had more fame and fortune as a result of enhanced skills, which I don't believe she has. But from my opinion she sounds very much feminine with a rich, honey, and smokey voice or tone; kind of like Toni Braxton.
Hi Dileesa, I would love to hear a vocal analysis for TAMIA! #allthebest
Your vocal analyses are so spot on! :-)
When you were having the discussion about where singers placed their hooks and were looking for another singer’s comparable note placement to Sade’s E4, I was thinking to myself “hmmm maybe A4.” Then you said it, and I was like”ha! I get exactly what she is talking about!”
Your commentaries are awesome!!
Great analysis!
thank you!
I love your videos
Would love to hear a analysis on the late gospel singer Daryl Coley
I love me some Sade!!! She's my all-time favorite female singer! I used to think that Sade was a contralto but then as I've gotten older, I realized that she's more of a mezzo cuz her voice is a little too bright and feminine to be considered a contralto. I understand that contraltos can come in all shades and colors just like any other voice type but I just don't think that Sade would fit into the contralto vocal fach but that's just my opinion. Also, I heard Sade sing all the way up to like a G#5 in head voice in a vocal range video that somebody did a while just to let you know.
Mark Shelton they! I totally understand that but her voice blossoms so low.. on c#5 in head voice that's not characteristically mezzo
Dileesa Hunter I see where you're coming from but I still don't think that she's a contralto though.
Mark Shelton I think Sade is a mezzo-contralto like Anita Baker.
Pls check out operatic Contralto EULA Beale, a lyric contralto with a pretty, soothing, feminine tone laced with a bit of darkness to it.
@@davidmuller9938 Sade is a Lyric Contralto & Anita Baker is a Dramatic Mezzo-Soprano
Hello Dileesa. i love your videos. i would love to hear what think about celine Dion.
Thank you!!
Thank You
Could you possibly do a vocal analysis on B.Slade/Tonèx? I think he's one of the greatest. I would love to hear your analysis on Luke James. Also, I know you did an analysis on Beyoncé wayyyy back in the day but I would love to hear your take on her voice since then.
hey! i do agree B Slade is a vocal wonder lol... I'd have to look up Luke James... but I love how people think my opinion will change on Beyonce
I'm going to have to go and keep posting this until you finally do it one day but i need more information on Wé McDonald. Or Michel'le and people who sing like them. How do they have such a soft, baby talking voice but sing a such powerful voice?
lol.. i think its a disorder
And she's a man. You can analyze the bones!
@@brightwinter9334 Please don't start with that bullshit. Y'all are OBSESSED with people's gender and it's WEIRD.
But toni braxton is lower mezzo. She just lower her larynx
Can you do an analysis on Carl Thomas? Would he be considered a Cavalier Baritone?
Can you do an analysis' on Stevie Wonder and Yma Sumac?
Dileesa, i would love you hear your thoughts on Christine McVie's voice. It's very interesting, although she isn't very popular today.
yea her voice sounds limited ... so its hard to tell. not much range.. she's definitely at least a mezzo
can you please do chloe and halle!! they are a duo with really unique voices!
also on how it also imitate their singing style??
i don't think they're unique... i think they sound like Beyonce .. their tone is different but they're approach is the same
You should watch is it a crime live lover’s rock
contraltos dont get the love sopranos do its not all about range and she can go lower than many women. i love tracy Chapman as well.
they don't get the love. you're right.. but contraltos are bomb!!
@@Dileesa I agree
Sade has actually hit an E6 once, during a live performance.
Do one for the Queen- Tina Turner
Lauryn Hill as well as Luther Vandross and Donny Hathaway
She belts in Is it A Crime
you are AMAZING!
thank you so much.
These are so bingeable ! I'm on my 5th one lol
Spot on
hello. I have been digging thru your videos and didn't notice a vocal analysis of Chante Moore. I would love to hear your thoughts. also are you still doing truthful Tuesdays?
Truthful Tuesday - not so much.... Chante Moore, ok
It would be a bit much bit could you also individually do an analysis on the new group June's Diary or if it's too much then just Kristal and Ashly from the group
I love these analysis! Have you ever done Cher, patti labelle or Yolanda Adams?
Yolanda would be AWESOME!!!
Wait can you send me the link. I couldn't find it.
i did patti, i think... but not the others
Check out song 'Maureen'
Kinda under the radar amongst the other mega hit songs.
do a vocal analysis on Jojo ! She is a beast !
please do sarah vaughan!!!!
:)
Dileesa Archer please do.
How about Chaka Khan
Can you do a video of both lahla Hathaway and Stephanie mills
Since you did Sade you should do one on Vanessa Williams.
Hi Dileesa, could you do a vocal analysis on Darrel Walls
sure!
Have you ever heard of the singer 'Lizz Wright?' Would you say she's a contralto as well?
it sounds like it to me
If not already can you analysis MJ.
i did, i just need to edit it
very insightful
can you do KMichelle? When she first arrived in the music scene I loved her, and I've noticed her style has change or her voice... not really sure but something happened. Also, I think has been playing around with a touch of autotune (again not sure) but what do you think?
Also, Alicia Keys? Not sure if you have an analysis on her already but I've never been a major can fan of her voice. I feel that she just screams. The production of her music in earlier years was nice but vocally idk. Listen to "Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart" my fave, And "Girl On Fire" hate it. Lol
Can you do an analysis on my voice?
Dileesa please please do a vocal analysis of Amy Winehouse...
YASSSSSSS
Peace SIS!
You could have withheld all the ‘sis’s’ since you clearly went on the attack .
Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comment ♥️
You are a complete idi0t. Dileesa is being modest and professional so I get why she went easy on her response but Dileesa has been featured on PBS and has gotten a testimonial from PATTI LABELLE. If she was not impressive wtf would PBS or Patti even care about her opinion? Wtf have you done Ms. Dancy!?
So thank you for YOUR opinion. Actually I am quite brilliant so your lil insult didn't bother me at all. and if you look below, I came back afterwords to clarify my response. I DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR RESUME' AND AM SURE THAT YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT MINE. A lot of people are always slammin SADE or have nothing good to say about how much of an ICON she is. One of a kind, and has achieved much. Sells out WORLDWIDE in 2 hours. And has an album droppin this Spring. They actuallly have featured SADE on PBS live concerts several times, and I am sure Ms. Patti is a huge fan as well. The critique was biased is all I was saying. Go to a SADE concert live and you will roll your lips right back up in your mouth Sis. Do your research. BYEEE!@@ladyblack679 thumbs up
@@delanodancy5187 You are anything but brilliant beloved - you are an overly emotional stan who got butthurt that a PROFESSIONAL vocal coach gave their PROFESSIONAL opinion. You said so yourself - "a lot of people slam Sade or have nothing good to say about her". Maybe it is for a reason. Oh, and screw your clarified response. All you had to say was her critique was biased but instead you came for Dileesa personally and insulted her vocal abilities. Sade is too classy and regal to associate or claim vermin like you as part of her fanbase.
@@ladyblack679 Girl listen, I'm not a ghetto rat that likes to tussle back and forth, but you be my guest. She gave her opinion and I gave mine. Sade is all of what you mentioned and more, she doesn't need my help. Her longevity, style, and sold out records and concerts clearly speak for themselves. The lady's disdain for her was loud and proud and she got checked. Her and I have spoken about it and we are good. And you know absolutely nothing about me, so you can go sit in the audience and be quiet now. Trollin me is not gonna change how she came off or her demeanor during her video. You are entitled to your opinion and so am I. Now, be blessed and have an amazing day and rest of your life dear. Take care. Maybe watch the countless ones where she is praised by and all of the greats from all genres even Beyonce' and many others. Negativity and her name are rarely in the same sentence. Carry on now chile.
Tamela Mann Please! !
Dileesa no reply to me:(
Yes!!!! What a voice!!!!
haha!! i'm sorry...
Mmmm I Love some Sade... even more than any other artist and I Love Music. I also have Mariah Carey tattooed on my arm. I disagree with the analysis on Sade. We as fans do need the smoothness of her voice to calm down the crazy in the world. I Love and always will and I appreciate you..
wow!! you really do love music!! i don't think she's wrong for her approach, i was just stating that her approach doesn't show her full potential.
Can you pls do Lalah Hathaway
Could you do one on Sohyang?
Love your reviews btw!! I always learn so much lol
diggydzz yes!
Usher please
Could you do one one on Miss Patti Labelle?
i did! Thanks for watching!
I think you were showing restraint in your critique as to not infuriate her fans who subscribe to your channel (?) and held back on what you really think of Sade's singing, and if I'm right, I agree with what you didn't say.
At any rate, it doesn't; change the end result..and that is that she doesn't sing with any range, which is something that doesn't appeal to me personally in a singer.
Have you done Fantasia's voice?
no, i haven't
Why are you talking about her. I love her for her range
I'd love to see tori Kelly and some male singers or anohni of Antony and the johnsons.
Could you do a vocal analysis on The Weekend?
The girls of Fifth Harmony please!
