- Here's the next episode of Chordplay with 'The Chords of Vito Bratta.'
I have to admit - I was a HUGE Vito Bratta fan when I was younger and just getting comfortable playing the guitar as a kid. His influence helped me realize it was okay that I was a massive Van Halen fan, and that I could (somehow) find my own way as a musician while also admiring EVH's guitar wizardry.
White Lion's music is still interesting to my ears these days, and while the songs have lyrically faded, Vito's guitar playing is as inspiring and interesting as ever. There was just something melodic and magical happening when he had a guitar in his hands, with great chord voicings, progressions, riffs, fills, licks, and solos - he was the real deal and a total package player.

I love the Wait solo but when I tell people of my greatest solos of all time it’s the Little fighter solo. It’s absolutely amazing and tasteful with everything. Tapping, arpeggios and even string skipping all with Vito’s incredible melodic feel.
Vito was one of the best the chord progressionds were great with lots of fills in-between.
I agree. He was/is just so darn musical when he plays. The chords, riffs, fills, licks, and solos were all brilliant!

Here's a tidbit of info about the wait solo that I bet a lot of people don't know. The wait solo you hear on the album was Vito's 1st practice run and one and only take in the studio. It was time to record the solo and Vito plays that solo right off the fly as a warm up. He tells the producer "ok I'm ready". The producer says, "what do you mean? That's it!" so that's the exact solo you hear on the album. I find that astonishing! EVH did the same on the beat it solo but I find Vito to be a lot cleaner with his playing. There is a radio interview with Vito on RUclips were Vito reveals a lot of what happened with White Lion and why he disappeared from the scene all together. Highly suggest listening to it.

Vito is one of the best guitarrist coming out from the 80s and influenced by VH. My favorite one is without a doubt Nuno Bettencourt but Vito is right next. Both amazing players and legends in my book

Very sad news EVH passed away today. We have lost a legend.
Going to high school in the early 80's, EVH and Randy Rhoads were right in my wheelhouse and I saw both of them live, EVH a bunch, like whenever you had the chance. When Flexible came out, it was clear Vai was a virtuoso. Rising Force was promising for Malmsteen, but imo, that was his best effort. When Wait hit the radio, I knew immediately Vito was in that category. He got pegged as a EVH clone back then, but he was a lot more then that. It's great to see all these years later his stuff being dissected for it's inherent beauty and complexity. It's criminal that these guys were opening for Stryper on the success of Pride.
Sadly, folks are still on that " van halen clone" nonsense. The guy was far beyond van halen in melodic sense, phrasing, had a wider range of chord voicings, didnt spend 90% of his career lockedinto pentatonic leads over major chords... they just shared a lot of similar influences.
Dude I was 16 when Wait came out. I was watching Headbangers Ball and Wait came on. Like you, I knew there was a new gunslinger in town. Actually got to meet Vito on the Aerosmith tour they opened for in 87 or 88. Amazing guitartist. I wish he had a better lyricist to work with. But man what a band.
Wow at 7:50! After all these decades That's the arpeggiated bridge part! Sounds totally different played by itself. Like something a modern melodic band would would kill for. Vito was mad deep.

It's weird that you don't really notice it until you listen for it and start playing it along with the song, and then not long after that, it's the only thing you can hear during that section once it gets stuck in your head.

I ignored that part for years (mainly because I was trying to cover the distorted guitar part), but once I learned it I realized that THAT was the cool chord thing happening in that section of the song, and it always eluded me until I finally sat down and learned how to play it.
And you're right, it doesn't even sound like part of the song until you listen for it and hear it hiding in those nooks and crannies.

One of my favorite guitarists, rarely mentioned. Just subscribed. I like how you brought to light his ability to play melody’s as he moved through chord progressions.
Sorry to reply to my own comment but, his solo on “Little Fighter” always lights a fire for me. I usually play the song twice when I when I’m listening to that album.

Vito was on e of the absolute very best guitar players and his playing still amazes me. I really miss this guys playing and w here it could have went. I loved this band White Lion too very much and they were very special , people dont realize how special they were. I loved these guys in high school even though the band at the time didn't even exist anymore [started listening to them in 2007 at 15] Have been looking around since then for concise and real ways to play White Lion chordplay and through your videos, I have finally found a reliable resource. Thanks for covering this guy.Sad he totally disappeared.He was one of the more interesting guitar players of his time.And oh so very talented.If you have ever heard the saying"He makes me want to cut off my fingers and burn my guitars".That is what Vito did to many of us in the late 80's.

Great job man. Thanks. Vito is mythic to me. His career so short like Jim Croce almost, but have us so much in that small window. I really believe Bratta displayed enough talent and ability that he could, should be considered among the greatest guitarists.

And unlike someone like Croce or even Randy Rhoads, Vito's still with us and is almost "in hiding."
Which is sad and a little odd, but I'm sure he has his reasons why he did what he did, and in some weird way I respect him for it, even though I really miss hearing his music and would like some new music from Mr. Bratta.

@@LateNightLessons Yeah he must be very introverted in some ways. I have read and heard that Mike Tramp said it was at times difficult getting him involved with things even during their short bit of fame. He obviously isn't mental. I have listened to the Eddie Trunk interview and he is very articulate and soft spoken...sounded completely normal. His recluse nature at first seemed Steve Perry like, but I don't ever see Vito emerging from his quiet life. I have accepted it. I have four albums. Pride is a mastercraft...his magnum opus. What he gave us from start to finish in that album is beyond astonishing. I may be laughed out of town for this, but I believe it is a perfect album guitar playing-wise. The mastery and virtuosity he displayed puts him discussions with Vai, Hendrix and any of the masters. Just my humble opinion.

I watched the 1st 30 seconds and already liked....
Vito Bratta was so melodic every part of his music was s melodic statement and his tone was phenomenal, I read that he had medical issues with his hands, such a loss, he was a musical genius
He was such a great player and his music/ideas made those songs better than they would've been otherwise.
They didn't last long after the '90s arrived, but what they did record and release was really great!
It's REALLY interesting to listen to some of those early demos and alternate versions of these songs. They were a little heavier early on and added a bit more of a melodic/Top 40 style by the time Pride came out.
Vito was on fire the entire time and really made their music special.
🙏Thank You! I love Vito's playing. Like you said, he definitely wears his heroes on his sleeve. But he sprinkles himself all over his compositions. When I listen, it's like, "Oh, that's inspired by this, or that." But when you hear the real Vito in there, it's definitely an, "OOoohHH!" moment.

Vito is fantastic, I was mesmerized even before I started playing the guitar myself. I was usually mostly into darker stuff like doom metal, but then there was white lion. I once played the solo in Going Home for my friend M, and he said it was the happiest thing he's ever heard, which I'm pretty sure meant he didn't like it. Well, I did, and I assumed everyone would hear what I heard.
That ONE chord in Lady of The Valley!
I know about White Lion cause I was born in the 80's but I gotta admit... I never listened to them much. Those chords are so cool though... gotta check more of him out. Another awesome vid!

Not sure if has been said in the comments already, the chords of "Wait" are very similar to the chord progression of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds". Vito was such a tasteful, creative, melodic player. Excellent video as always Dave. 👍🏼🎸

Take your time working through some of this material and if something is too hard or tricky/stretchy to play, you can move around and try things that are easier to play/grab and then come back to the harder stuff later, once you've had some time building some strength and technique.
I can't tell you how many times I had to wait to play something that was too hard for me, and when I came back to it (whatever it might have been) I almost always surprised myself that I could play more of it, or at least play it better than I could the previous time I tried it.
Some things come naturally or at least easier than other things, but once you find those things that are "hard to play" that's telling you there's something there that you can't do (yet), but in time you'll build the ability and strength to play it.

I just need to get out of my comfort zone, -good old power chords- , and start playing chords with different voicings, four-note chords, that kind of stuff, and get used to them. Take care.
I'd try anything and everything you see or can think of.
You never know when you'll need/want to play something unusual or different so the more things you try and start wrapping around your fingers (and your head) the sooner new chords, sounds, and ideas will start appearing under your fingers.
It takes some time, but once you start branching out like this, you'll find new things coming out of you every time you pick up the guitar.
And once you get going in that direction, it's really easy to just keep moving forward and learn new ideas and sounds as often as possible.

Hello David. Loved Vito's style. His works are his own with a dab of Halen. I read some where that he was criticized sounding like Eddie. I didn't know why. He always mentioned he was influence by him. Every one had adapted Eddie's technique by that time already. I miss the guy. Such a great guitarist. Thanks for naming the chords as you play them. Vito has the most extreme Van Halen influence of all those shredders. Especially his rhythm style. That's when you realize how great Eddie really is, he's got so much going on with his fills and chord choices.
Love Vito thought the same as you about Eddie... styles and simmulataites.....i was hooked....mike tramp is crazy for not reaching out.
In "Lonely Nights" the acoustic intro is in E, but the electric part is in A.
