Skal Labissière: From DISASTER to the NBA

- Skal Labissiere was once the biggest high school basketball star in the world. He was the projected number one overall NBA Draft pick as a teenager and eventually made it to the NBA. You never would have believed he’d get there just a few years prior when he was the victim of the second deadliest earthquake in history.

I was going in that 2010 earthquake it was literally the worst thing imaginable.having to walk around and over limbs of dead friends is a sight I won’t ever forget. I can still smell the dead bodies till this day. As an Haitian I appreciate making this video
Thanks for sharing. I am so sorry you went through that.
Through tragedy comes strength 😔 Keep your head up Brother, stay strong
I am so sorry. So hard to forget this stuff
fr it’s really sad😢
Oh yeah, you’re strong. That shit would be hard to handle, im happy you still here and livin. Wishing you love and happiness
I'm a kings fan and this video showed me that Skal was a lot better than I saw him to be in Sacramento. He had good post moves and decent ball handling for a big, which made him score at ease. I wish things would have turned out to be better for him in the NBA based on his talent, but hopefully he will get another chance.
I didn’t know much about Skal. Thanks for this, Casey!

You’re the only NBA youtuber that will talk about these kinds of stories. Please never stop. Way more impactful than the latest Ben Simmons drama. Not that I don’t also enjoy the drama.
Haha - I know what you mean. Thanks Joel 🙏🏼
I wonder if staying in college for another year working on his physique could have changed his trajectory. Lack of rebounding is certainly problematic with his height and reach.
That's clearly what Jesus wanted. 1, 2, 3 Cancun!
What amazing inspiring story I support him as a fellow Haitian 🇭🇹✊🏽
We me too 🇭🇹
Jesus loves you and may God bless you
Haitians have been through an awful lot in recent years. My best to you & yours & I hope you’re all well. ❤️
RIP Caleb Swanigan🙏🏾
love these rando vids man, keep doing your thing bro
Thanks, will do!
Great story telling! Greater message! I really appreciate that you’re able to go off of the beaten path in regards to what a successful story looks like. Media too often portrays success through the lens of Hollywood when in fact the realities of life are far more interesting and colorful than that narrow view. Success should be measured by purpose, growth, community and the revelation of love.
Well done brother!
Thanks!!!
Well said
Keep doing your thing bro
loving these random videos and very special for sure , good on you Casey!!!!
Thanks! Will do!
Need more videos like this bro gives us a lot of hope and strength ❤❤
great upload, very inspiring
Amazing video! Was waiting for this story!
Glad you enjoyed it!
That was a nice change of pace from your usual content. Please make more of this kind of stuff! Really enjoyed that
Thanks, will do!
One of the best videos you have ever made Casey! I love this change of perspective or (how we call as a social worker) reframing.
Is it bad to played in a NBA game or never? He tried it and I am pretty sure that he gave everything, more than I have ever can do. And he is giving so much back to the people and his community and that matters. I have a lot of respect to this people.
Yes!! Exactly! Thank you for this comment 🙏🏼
Fantastic video! Thanks for doing it
Well, thank AM hoops. Now I have to put another player on the list to watch.
But all seriousness, love these random deep dives to the players otherwise glanced over. I love how you are able to give a story behind the face. Super inspirational bro
Glad you enjoyed!
Calling a guy that killed himself a late round bust is low asf….
Honestly- it was a whole other story and just coincidence that Swanigan was involved so I didn’t mention that.
@@AMHoopsObviously no ill intent but still bro
@@Evan-ev9xv ya, it’s unfortunate- I agree
Very inspirational 👏🏾 🙏🏾! Continue the work!
As a Haitian, thank you for covering this story.
Thank you for posting this ❤
One of your best videos! Thanks for all your hard work on these. Glad I found this channel.😃

Love the vids. I really love that you’re making videos like these
Glad you like them!
I never knew about him before this video. Amazing video as always.
Glad you enjoyed!
Yo Casey, we need a video of you addressing all the free agent moves and trades happening. It will help catch people that don’t focus on small moves actually understand. Thank you!
Skal Labissière absolut goat
Awesome video! One of my favs, so far, actually. Nice to see a wholesome story about a player that I had never even heard of. Even though his NBA career didn't go as planned, the guy was still ranked
No.1 in high school, went to Kentucky, was drafted in the first rd., and played in the NBA...while being from Haiti. Pretty impressive
I love this video it has such good content all your videos are very good
Thank you so much 😀
Your welcome
Let’s go am hoops I love your content keep it up
Casey this is some great content
You should make a video on who he was traded for, Caleb Swanigan. That’s one of the stories of the past few years that makes me sick, he completely let himself go and died too young.
Great video keep up the good work
Great video!
loved inspiring stories like this ❤💯
So glad!
That was a very good story. Hope he thrives in whatever he does in the future
I love your amazing videos their so good
this is such a thought through story
I went to high school with Skal, he was always a humble kid. Wish his career had panned out
Love the channel! You have a great upload schedule
I love this content. Not everything has to be about the guys who make millions
Yea it’s honestly wild to think about all the prospects who didn’t make it far past draft night but were heralded as future stars in high school. Growing up in the hoopmixtape era was such a time..
Im a fan am, but with this video you surprised me more than ever, not everyone understands than success isnt just about money and fame, respect ✊
Thanks Jose!!
I love your dedication to these videos, you have a new subscriber in me❤
Thank you so much!
Hey this is a great video and I love the content you make. I just wanted to point something out you may not have noticed around 6:10 in the video you mention skal was traded for a 1st round bust this guy was actually Caleb Swanigan who passed away last year. It would be great if you could make a video about it. his story is actually amazing how he made it to the nba in the 1st place RIP he maybe could have been something but sadly passed away before his time
You're the 2nd person in the comments I have seen ask for a video of him, and I would like one as well, so it needs to happen. Loved watching him in college. Got out the NBA and COMPLETELY let himself go. Sad to see
This was honestly a really good timely message for me. I have been down in the dumps about some things that I have gone on in my career and just questioning why and where do I go from here? How do I get out of the situation knowing that God placed certain gifts and talents inside of me, but won’t open the doors that are needed for those gifts to really thrive & be showcase, so thank you also for highlighting Haitian brothers and sisters. As a black person myself I have seen the Haitian people get absolutely no love for main stream media, and even less love from our government. While, we support other nations who are not as close to us/don’t affect us as closely as Haiti does.
I would say that I don’t have my happy ending. I don’t have the happy ending her falling action that Skal has right now but I don’t know I guess I’m hoping for that so thanks.
Good video, thanks.
Amazing story… I was in DR when earthquake happened, insane.
I wasn’t in Haiti during those quakes, but I remember how frantic my whole family was when we couldn’t get in touch with certain family members over there. Thankfully everyone was fine but those few days were stressful
great content
Great story!
Horrible time in our history. Lost several family members from that earthquake. Skal is an inspiration! 🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹
Waddup AM Hoops keep doing ya thing my guy, my birthday is today thanks for the vid
Happy birthday!!!
I love this podcast ❤
Lets go new am hoops vid!
Amazing cover art!!!
Love this video, especially from a diehard kentucky fan! Wish he returned for one more year, nonetheless happy for what he has achieved in life
Amazing story 👏
Amazing story.
IM A BIG FAN but how do you get all these clips of games im trying to make a channel like your and wondering how do you get these clips of the games
Great video. This kind of thing really puts life into perspective. Everything we have is a blessing from God.
What an amazing story
You da goat 🐐
Kings legend Skal Labissiere
What a beautiful jumpshot for a 7-foot guy. If he was a prospect now, he’d probably be a top 10 pick for sure. There’s a lot of centers today that can’t rebound and are signed because of their stretch ability.
Sometimes NBA offices get carried away with espectacular atheticism with a win now approach, then they forget to look closer. I believe this guy would have been more productive than Zion, for instance or many other examples around the league.
Inspiring
You know it’s going to be a great day when am hoops uploads
yeah skal labissiere i was wondering about him , seems to be inactive on social media
Yes
What a great video Casey! I was in the Air Force in 2010 and deployed from Florida to respond to the crisis. There was a lot of carnage down there. Out of that I saw some incredible people doing incredible things! Seeing this and finding out that Skal came out of that gives me more faith in God. God has richly blessed that young man and he is living up to his potential. Not everyone is made to have a 10, 15, 20 year career in the NBA. I think that he's exactly where God wants him to be. Bravo Skal and thank you Casey for making this!
I love Skal in NBA2k, he's a cheat code
Earthquake is literally the worst. 😢
He may not have been a succes in the NBA, but he succeeded in life and is enriching other's lives and giving back. I admire his faith in God. Whether or not one believes, trying to live the right way and acting on it is the right way to live. Through dire tribulations, he appreciates his blessing and the fragility of everything. Give more than you take. 🙌 🙏
