      Yes, they grow well once established, but you’ve got to keep an eye on them!

    Good to see the P. Vivax in the flesh so to speak. Shame my garden isn't big enough. Though the front garden hasn't been done yet. 😂

    Lovely specimen, may I ask, how to you keep them growing so straight, mine comes out in all angles. Also do you cut out the thin culms? Mine has culms of all thicknesses and I’m hoping it starts producing thicker ones, it’s on its second year in the ground. Thanks for the help.

      Hi, this is year 3 and yes I will thin out the older culms, very soon
      You always get the odd culm that grows at an odd angle but most are straight

      @@montongarden thank you, are the culms growing out at a 45* angle the edge of my current rhizome! Do you just prune your thinnest culms after removing damaged ones? And does bamboo reshoot from where you prune in the future?

    I planted a Vivax with root barrier a few weeks ago and I was very interested to see how far the runners have gone in your garden.
    Would you say they are mostly surface level In the first few inches of soil? Our barrier is 40cm deep and 10cm above the ground

    • @montongarden
      @montongarden  3 месяца назад

      Hi, the rhizome that has gone furthest is fairly shallow
      But I would be going round the inside of the barrier with a spade a couple of times later in the year
      Once the new culms are up it will make rhizome and it may not appear, but you will find it with a spade by gently digging in

    what zone are you in? how cold yoor winters get?

    • @montongarden
      @montongarden  2 месяца назад

      Zone 8, can get cold, doesn’t make any difference with these, it’s summer heat that helps more

    What do you recommend as a barrier? Thanks

    • @montongarden
      @montongarden  7 дней назад

      I don’t use one, but they are available from places such as Scottish Bamboo and the size they use is fine, the rhizome is fairly shallow

      I’m waiting to see what comes up, then will cut rhizomes where needed, leave for 6 weeks and pot up divisions
