Monton Garden
Великобритания
Добавлен 25 апр 2022
Started this channel to record the progress of our garden, which is on the west side of Manchester
The garden is based around a large lawn (we have crazy dogs) with planting in raised beds on all sides, along with an island bed. At the time of writing this, we still have lots of work to do which will include the construction of another large raised bed that will incorporate a water feature
The palnting is what many people will refer to as 'Tropical' or 'Jungle style, but I prefer to refer to it as an 'interesting collection of plants'
Living in the north west does create more challenges than those further south, but we do OK!

A Wet Sunday in Manchester - Pond Advice Needed!
Просмотров 317Месяц назад
Very wet today, decided to make a video about the start of some of the changes we planned for the garden a few months back So we decided to build a pond into the mid section of a new raised bed It will be three sleepers high and square, approx 2.3x2.3x1.4 (metres) The sleepers give me 0.6m so I’ve got a lot of digging to do The questions I have are regarding filtration Volume of pond is approx ...

Our Garden At Night - Shapes & Colour
I went to school in Monton, and later lived there. It had mature gardens. rhododendrons and trees we didn't have higher up the 'scarp. That you have created such an exotic garden there is incredible: your knowledge truly wonderful. Thank you.
Hi, thanks for your comment
Great job!!
Thank you!
Hi need some advise first time having Ensete ventricosum in ground got it this year about June, I dug it up today it came up with big clump of mud should I wash dirt off trim roots before potting up in dry compost and do the roots have to be dry before putting in the compost or put staight in after rinsing dirt off
Hi, that’s exactly what you need to do, it’s not important the roots are dry, they will dry over time I couldn’t do that to mine as it was too big
Thank you so much
a joyful noise unto the creator..
It wasn’t that joyful, the sound was shocking!
It looks so beautiful now - masses of wonderful different leaves. Perhaps you'll have exotic water plants next?
Thank you! Not sure about plants in the pond, will have to investigate what’s possible as there is a chance they can get eaten We will be planting up the small wildlife ponds in spring, they are nicely matured now
Hi, I'm subscribed to your channel for sometime now and enjoy it. Could you tell me if you can, I have a Rogersia Bronze Peacock plant, I've list the tag. I need to know do I have to over winter it in my shed as not got a garage or greenhouse. I've tried to Google it but I cannot find any information. Thankyou for your time. 🪴🌱🌴😊
Hi, thanks for the comment! Is the Rodgersia in a pot? I assumed it was, it’s perfectly hardy, but as with any plant, you should always try and avoid a pot freezing solid should it get very very cold, to do that, just bring it into a sheltered spot against the house
Or put it in your shed!
Thankyou for replying back 😊 when i first purchased the plant i divided it into 3small plants, 2 in the ground and other in a pot. Thankyou so much for advise. 🌴🌱🪴😊 @@montongarden
allright how are ya..garden is well coming on and looking proper !! thx for heads up on the frost coming up ..nice channell fella also have you any vivax for sale love that bamboo
Thanks! Yeah, it’s looking cold this week, may have some vivax in spring
mate iv never moved one that big 😂😂😂 id need a sleep after dragging that about its a monster . did it go in the conservatory, or did you have to chop more off .
It went in as it was, I had to put the pot in and then drag this on a tray and lift it into pot Will take a few people to get it out, providing it doesn’t go through the floor first
Will it go dormant once indoors? 😬
Yes, and kept dry It may push out the last leaf very slowly until I start watering next year
Amazing. Taking my up at weekend. Hope it's not too late. 😮
It’s should be fine, a few nights of low temps don’t do any harm, only did mine yesterday as it was a nice afternoon
How old is the Eniba?
Small plant I bought in August 2022, in the ground in 2023, overwintered then planted out earlier this year
@montongarden Jesus that's some growth rate 😲
@ yes, it shocked us, lots of manure in the bed Check out the other videos I did about it
I feel your pain. I dug mine up last week. It's about the same size trunk and I struggled with it. I may have to propagate it next year if I can't lift it.
Had work and not doing it next year with this one, it will be in quarters when it comes out I’ve got three small plants ready to go for next year
What do you feed the Hiniba with?
Nothing, it was planted in a very rich, manure based bed
great video, looks like an awesome project! looking forward to the progress!
Yes, it will transform the garden I hope!
Sounds great bro 👍🏻 look forward to see your progression. I do like a good old tench myself 😊 best of the fresh water fish
They are a nice fish, caught some big ones over the years
Beautiful, my s.alpina is very young, compared to this example. How many years do you think for the berries?
I would say around 6/7 years I’ve got several plants, some are around five years old and still not produced berries
Still all looking fabulous! Thanks for sharing
Thanks!
where did you get the slweepers for your boarders its exactly what i want also lovin the channell
Found a local place that has them for £20 each
2 more weeks of mild weather buddy
Yes, garden is lasting longer than usual this year
mate if you get berries give us a shout il drive over and grab a few and get them growing in the propagator .like i did those others
Yes, will do
Any time you feel like selling some berries let me know ;)
Will do
Good morning I think my schefflera addiction is maturing 😊. Would have some alpina seeds for sale when ripe?. Thank you for your videos . Kind regards jerome
I’ll have to see how they get on, lots of people asking for them
@montongarden I grow a wide selection of palm and cycad seedlings. If a swap is appealing. Let me know
Is your conservatory heated? 🌴🌴
Hi, no we don’t heat our conservatory I have seen it go as low as four degrees on very cold nights, but as the sky is usually clear it can be 20 degrees in the day
@ ah mine is as it’s open to the rest of the house so probably not a good overwinter place! Maybe the porch will suffice…..
Nicely done sir! Looks great!
Thank you kindly!
Nicely done sir! Looks great!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great banana plant, how are you going to overwinter this year
It will be cut back and kept in the conservatory
iv just dug my maureli up today, not for cold or wind more because it wasnt in a raised bed and the water table was high but the roots were in tip-top condition .i was seeing other plants suffering from damp, so I thought I'd get it up and in the greenhouse and on doing it. i could see the roots were fine, and I'd no real need to do it as there is no frost forecast in the 2 weeks weather forecast .
Yeah, it’s looking ok for the next few weeks, but it did take a battering from storm Ashley! The leaves are shredded now, it’s done well all year to escape the wind
Charles Dowding’s videos are great. Mick Poultney The Compost King is another to watch.
Yes, he is very good, his methods can be applied to any style of gardening, I’ll check Mick Poultney out, thanks
we have been getting hammered too, lol my bananas look like ribbons 😂🤦♂️ that hiniba is so impressive 👊😎
It took a good beating yesterday, still looks good though
I agree with the hamming up and over egging the weather, it's farcical at times
The press and their social media feeds are the worse!
There’s so many hardy tropicals from yunnan. You should explore all those Asian habitats with google earth streets view all those unknown plants will make you want to go plant hunting right now
She's a beast.
Sure is, and still growing
Loved the Joy Division seaway 😂
Thanks, don’t normally wear that T shirt in the garden!
looking great! great project. ive started work back up again on the large pond/ swimming pond im adding to the garden at the moment, finally the ground is soft enough haha, digging clay is no fun! loving how your pond is connecting the two beds though, really ties it together.
Thanks, swimming pond sounds like a big job!
@@montongarden it has been a project for sure! i think im almost ready to put the liner in, dreading this stage as it's a 18m x12m liner...its really heavy 😂🤦♂️ finally down to about 6ft deep now in the plunge pool, i think that should be deep enough 🤔🤷♂️
@@richf_tropical_garden_projects I just watched the video, that’s a big job, I’ll follow with interest!
@@montongarden ah wicked yeah its been a long term project all done by hand lol...i think i bit off more than i can chew with this one 😂😂🤦♂️
Have you grew thailia dealbata before? I had one and was told its not hardy at all and threw it away before the winter then saw a post about someone elses staying out year round in the north west.
Hi, no I haven’t, I got given some and the garden it came from is always colder than mine, will check with the person who gave it me
How do we know you didn't swap out measuring sticks?? Just kidding. Good luck getting that out of the ground, it's going to be awfully heavy. It's nothing but pure water weight.
Damn, I could have made it bigger by doing that! It’s going to be a 2 man job I reckon! And it’s still growing
👏👏👏👏 that must be some good horse muck 😂
Yes, only the best, well rotted! I have a couple of places I visit regular
Great colour and contrast
Yes, it’s a good plant, nice size too, a good choice for even a small garden
When.plants sulk then inexplicably take off roots find something tasty below ground. I joked once that a tree had 'found a dead horse', which upset a friend butwithoutf serious chemical study we can't know. Monton's soil might also hold prehistoric beasts. Rock-on!
Trees grow well round here as you know, lots of them I did the ‘no dig gardening’ approach in the area where this bed was going, well before I built it
My maurelii is over 5m .just Just measured it. that went in with a huge amount of compost and fish blood and bone and is watered with an irrigation system. Give them they want and they get massive.not looking forward to taking it up this year because it’s so heavy
Dry store or in a pot?
In a pot with dry coir compost
Brilliant that is a beast, loved the commentary 😂
Thank you, my videos are just for fun and like to have a laugh!
Pretty impressive my friend. Not familiar with that variety of Ensette. I’ve have a few Ensette M. Here in Pensacola FL but nothing this tall. Guess I need to find one and see how tall I can grow it. Nice job
Thanks! Hiniba is a rare one, I’m sure you will be able to find it I after Monti…… forgot the name 🤣
Very impressive
Thank you, I think that every time I see it, several times a day
stunning Nana Tony, lovely garden..would love to have that amount of space
Thank you!
Stunning.thanks for the video.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it
Hahaha hope mr B. Ellend was watching
So do I 🤣
Wow that's amazing. Love it 🌴🌱🪴
Thanks!
Wow, awesome plants! 🤩
They are, easy to get drawn deeper in the world of Brassiaopsis as more become available, but I’m happy with the plants I have
WHAT ARE THOSE GIANT LEAVES?! 5:01
They are Gunnera manicata
You think you're putting in a wildlife pond, but Bob thinks it's going to be a giant watering dish for him.🤣Looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
I know what you’re saying! 🤣
