  • RM1380 The 2023 flagship performance cruiser from RM shipyard in La Rochelle France. RM have a solid reputation for building fast cruiser out of plywood and epoxy. I was very impressed with the set-up and layout of this yacht and would even consider taking it offshore for some extended blue water cruising.

    Ugly interior. Looks like it was designed by Ikea. Boats should look like boats inside and out.

    We did a training on a RM 1180 3 years ago, these boat are Real BEAST. This IS proper performance cruiser. Most of the time we were at boat speed = TWS and at beam reach angle you can do more than TWS. Wheight/keel/sail surface ratios are phenomenal on these boat. Not the average fat cruiser...

    Hi! This boat seems focused on performance sailing, isn't it? The interior is nice but somewhat spartan. From what you showed I felt more attention was given to the outside spaces. BUT proportionally the kitchen space is very good! I believe the designer likes cooking, hahaha! Thanks for the review. See you on the next one. Oh, before I forget, Merry Christmas to you all! Fair winds!

      You are right this RM like the smaller models is definitely set up for sailing in mind more than comfort. Thought has gone into the outside spaces, open but practical with all your systems in reach. I have been promised a sail next year in the spring which I am looking forward to. We sometimes borrow a friend’s Sun_fast so to be able to put the side by side and see how the RM performs will be great especially as it’s 10ft bigger.

    Great boat - this is a sailor's boat. Everything is right where you need it. Bonus on the sliding cupboards and real chart table. Might look a bit spartan but this is a lot easier to clean and care for, especially if you have to fight mold. The ply core construction is a nice feature I think. Makes for a very strong and light hull. Good one!

    • @SVTONICBoatWives
      @SVTONICBoatWives  9 месяцев назад +1

      You are right about the plywood construction, the hull is very rigid which is great for speed and strength. This is a great performance cruiser and I can’t wait for a test sail.

      @@SVTONICBoatWives carrying on the plywood tradition of the Pacific Northwest's Thunderbird One Design class, and Philippe Harlé's Muscadet in France and Europe. I've sailed a couple of T-Birds, OPB. Once you lean into the chine, hit a groove, then just rocket off that feeling makes it hard to go back to other boats.

    How far back must the bow thruster be on a flat hull. I guess its retractabe.
    I agree about the compass, but at the table is not good because you sit so far to the side on a wide boat , so its look down or sideways , maybe 2 on the comings strait ahead ,

    • @SVTONICBoatWives

      That’s a good thought about the compass, I will find out about the bow thruster for you when we do a factory visit, Thank you for watching and have a great holiday season

    I started off heavily biased against this boat because - Plywood, having built a very expensive one from hardwood marine ply that disappointed, plus the regular Cruising area from and to the Caribbean is Argentina during nurricane season, and Brazil for example, has an area of Termite Mounds at least as large as Britain, and I don’t fancy sailing on a Termite Restaurant. But this Boat Tour was that good, it was clear to see the necessary Termite Barrier Coating finish has been applied everywhere it was needed. If it’s Saildrive, then the Volvo is the best Choice at least until a Yanmar of 80 plus Horsepower is chosen either the ZF Saildrive option, but not the rotating 360 degree version imho. The plain ZF, to me is as good as Volvo’s. What is needed for personal Construction Choices looks easy to substitute or build in or have as Custom options, so this does look like a boat that can be made to survive my long term demands. With me being a right Fussy Pants - to say the least - that makes this a pretty rare Sailboat. Great Tour imho. A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to All. Bob. 👍🌟🌟🌟❤️

      Ah Ha, a boat you can get on with, only kidding I am patiently waiting for my test sail next spring on one of these RM’S. I like the fact you can have twin keel or lifting keel, deep or shallow keel depending upon what options you chose. These boats are practical in their layout for sailing or so RM says so we will have to see how they single hand,

    • @brownnoise357
      @brownnoise357 9 месяцев назад

      @@SVTONICBoatWives It does looks though you an set them up e actly how you need them to be, tbh, in mast furling, and furling headsails, and it is set up for single handing. I do like the keel and Draft options available as well, as able to get to 1.4 metres opens up all manner of access availability. Not that Sailing along the ICW is ecactly a pleasant experience, but it can be done if needed, and crossing it into nice towns with free moorings, is piece of cake. Too expensive for a tide me over boat for me tbh, and I'm still set set on an Island Packet for the new boat build tbh, as I can get everything that I need, plus a few things I didn't even realise I needed, until I saw them in Darrell's Boat Tours. Best Wishes, and have a great time over Christmas. Bob. ❤

    Another good tour, so thank you very much. Am sure the new owners will be happy, but not my type of boat.
    Being 56 and having no sailing experience since i was 18, i tend to favour the heavier motor sailor types like Nauticat and Colvic. Basically relax and go slow.
    Question. Is there a modern motor sailor ? As everything ive seen on you tube, seems to be at least 25 years old..??

    Interior is lacking the wood finishes and carpentry that I am such a fan of. White and bright though this is, it’s really not for me. Those carpentry skills might be lost forever due to a lack of demand. The pre-2000 Amal’s and Oysters still had the beautiful woodwork. That is probably the direction I would choose to go. I did not see a dishwasher or clothes dryer and the engine compartment looks very tight. Otherwise, it looks ok topside, nothing really special.
