The Untold Story of Yahweh: How a Defeated God Became the One True God | Dr. Justin Sledge

  • On MythVision with Derek Lambert, Dr. Justin Sledge ‪@TheEsotericaChannel‬ joins the conversation to unravel the mind-bending transformation of Yahweh-once a bruised and battered storm warrior god, constantly losing battles in the divine arena, now reigning as the supreme deity of the world’s most dominant religions. How did this deity, once seemingly on the ropes, go from repeated defeat to total domination? Did Yahweh himself get erased, surviving only in name while his original identity-his body, his place among the gods, and his storm-wielding fury-was systematically stripped away and rebranded by later worshippers? This deep dive into Yahweh’s origins exposes the layers of theological propaganda, where his followers didn’t just rewrite history-they rewrote their god.
But here’s where it gets really fascinating: rather than admit Yahweh had been bested when larger empires steamrolled their kingdoms, his worshippers twisted the narrative in a stunning act of theological gymnastics. Instead of conceding that their god had lost, they flipped the blame onto themselves-they had sinned, they had failed, they had provoked Yahweh’s wrath. The defeats weren’t signs of a weak god; they were divine punishments, proof that they weren’t worshipping hard enough! It was a self-inflicted theological guilt trip that allowed Yahweh to remain undefeated in their minds while saddling his followers with endless cycles of self-blame. This was no ordinary god-human relationship-it was a toxic, co-dependent bond where Yahweh’s silence, absence, or apparent weakness only ever meant one thing: his people weren’t worthy. In this conversation, we expose the psychological, historical, and literary mechanics of how Yahweh’s worshippers turned catastrophe into conviction and remade a struggling storm god into an unstoppable force of monotheism.

37:00 Precisely someone told me on Twitter that there are Buddhist practices that are focused on embodying and personalizing tutelary deities to aid in achieving enlightenment. They're called 'yidam'.
They literally suggested that _the integration of the personal/human-shaped into divinity lowers the compute requirements for experiencing divinity_ and they equated it with experiencing _spacious divinity via Jesus_ at least for people with certain conditions.

I love Dr. Justin Sledge and his channel and he has been really brilliant in here, as always. But my favourite part of this video is Derek being so open and vulnerable about his own struggle and trying to still find the balance between historical criticism and just enjoying the myth. That was really beautiful. Blessings on your journey, Derek. And wishes of much further success for both of you in the future. Greetings from a "complicated Muslim".

I think Derek answered his own questions. I do agree that he should not get bogged down with battling apologists. I like how he introduces all the different scholars, texts, and all manner of sources, it shows that the traditional mainstream religions are more complex than we realize. The Yahweh of the old testament and יהוה of the kabbalah are clearly different things, where in the old testament it seems to be a war lord that has human like characteristics while in the kabbalah it is a metaphysical concept of the source of creation but yet it is being perceived as the same thing. I wonder when and how did this fusion took place?

According to the general consensus of scholarship *(even critical Christian scholars),* YHWH was originally incorporated into the Canaanite pantheon as a son of the Canaanite high god El before inheriting the top spot in the pantheon and El's wife Athirat (Asherah) before religious reforms "divorced" them. El's pantheon in Ugarit (modern day Ras Shamra in Syria) is called the *Elohim,* literally the plural of El. Interestingly, the Biblical god is also referred to numerous times as Elohim. If you want to see if El is fictional, just read his mythology in the Ugaritic/Canaanite texts.
"The mysterious Ugaritic text Shachar and Shalim tells how (perhaps near the beginning of all things) *El* came to shores of the sea and saw two women who bobbed up and down. *El* was sexually aroused and took the two with him, killed a bird by throwing a staff at it, and roasted it over a fire. He asked the women to tell him when the bird was fully cooked, and to then address him either as husband or as father, for he would thenceforward behave to them as they called him. They saluted him as husband. He then lay with them, and they gave birth to Shachar ("Dawn") and Shalim ("Dusk"). Again *El* lay with his wives and the wives gave birth to "the gracious gods", "cleavers of the sea", "children of the sea". The names of these wives are not explicitly provided, but some confusing rubrics at the beginning of the account mention the goddess *Athirat (Asherah),* who is otherwise *El's* chief wife, and the goddess Raḥmayyu ("the one of the womb"), otherwise unknown."
*"First, a god named El predates the arrival of the Israelites into Syria-Palestine.* Biblical usage shows El was not just a generic noun, but often a proper name for Israel’s God (e.g., Gen 33:20: “El, the God of Israel”)."
"I should add here that it is very clear from the grammar that the noun nachalah in v. 9 should be translated “inheritance.” *Yahweh receives Israel as his “inheritance” (nachalah), just as the other sons of El received their nations as their inheritance (nachal, v. 8).* With this verb, especially in the Hiphil, the object is always what is being given as an inheritance. Thus, Israel is given to Yahweh as his inheritance. ((Here I’m indebted to Dan McClellan.)) It would make no sense for Elyon to give himself an inheritance. Moreover, as I’ve argued elsewhere, it is not just the Gentile nations that are divided up according to the number of the *sons of El.* It is all of humankind, i.e., “the sons of Adam.” This clearly includes Israel. And the sons of Adam are not divided up according to the number of the *sons of El,* plus one (i.e., plus Elyon). They are divided up, according to the text, *solely* according to the number of the *sons of El.* *Thus, that Yahweh receives Israel as his inheritance makes Yahweh one of the sons of El mentioned in v. 8. Any other construal of the text would constitute its rewriting.*
A Sumerian hymn speaks to the goddess: “Nanshe, your divine powers are not matched by any other divine powers.” *Does this mean that Nanshe was the high goddess, that there were no gods above her? No, it does not.* Nanshe was the daughter of Enki, the high god. *In Sumerian mythology, as with Ugaritic, Israelite, Babylonian, and others, in the ancient past, the high god (Enki, in this case) divided up the world and assigned his children certain domains.* Nanshe was given a limited domain (the modern Persian Gulf) and was tasked with maintaining social justice there. *This is exactly what we see in Deuteronomy 32 with Yahweh. Yahweh is given a limited domain (Israel) and is given authority over his people, to punish them, as well as to protect and defend them against foreign enemies.* That Yahweh, like Nanshe, is said to have incomparable divine power *does not* mean that he is not subordinate to the high god who gave him his domain. *It is also of note that Nanshe, like Baal, Yahweh, and so many other deities, evolved over time. Her domain increased, and she was promoted in the pantheon (although she never became the high goddess)."*
*"The Most Heiser: Yahweh and Elyon in Psalm 82 and Deuteronomy 32 - Religion at the Margins"* based on the *majority scholarly consensus.*

*"Excerpt from “Yahweh and the Gods and Goddesses of Canaan” by John Day - Lehi's Library."*
*"The Table of Nations: The Geography of the World in Genesis 10"* - TheTorah.com
(Excluding the short narrative on Nimrod (vv. 8-12), *which appears to be a later addition,* Genesis 10 contains *70* names of nations or cities, a number that was symbolic of totality. Similarly, the descendants of Jacob were *70* in number (Gen 46:37; Exod 1:5), *as were the sons of the supreme Canaanite god El, with whom YHWH became equated.)*
*"Polytheism and Ancient Israel’s Canaanite Heritage. Part V | theyellowdart"*
(Of course, much of this [i.e., that Israel worshiped El and Asherah alongside YHWH] is really to be expected given that recent syntheses of the *archaeological, cultural, and literary data* pertaining to the emergence of the nation of Israel in the Levant *show that most of the people who would eventually compose this group were originally Canaanite. As the Hebrew Bible notes, the Hebrew language itself is a Canaanite language, literally the “lip of Canaan” (שְׂפַת כְּנַעַן; Is. **19:18**), and so it cannot often be distinguished by modern scholars from other Canaanite inscriptions on purely linguistic grounds.)*
    *"Ugarit - New World Encyclopedia"*
(Ugaritic religion centered on the chief god, Ilu or El, whose titles included "Father of mankind" and "Creator of the creation." The Court of El was referred to as the (plural) 'lhm or ***Elohim,*** a word ***later used by the biblical writers to describe the Hebrew deity*** and translated into English as "God," in the singular.
El, which was ***also the name of the God of Abraham,*** was described as an aged deity with white hair, seated on a throne.)

Nevertheless, the historical reconstruction that El was the chief god of the Israelites is not indebted only to the testimony of the (rather late) biblical witness of P. *Numerous biblical texts attest to the fact that the titles, functions, and the imagery associated with the Canaanite god El, as revealed by the Ugaritic texts and the Canaanite myth of Elkunirša, were assimilated into the profile of the deity YHWH.* According to the Ugaritic texts, El was known for his *wisdom* (e.g., KTU2 1.4.V.65[6]) and *great age* (’ab šnm, *“Father of Years,”* and drd, *“Ageless One,”* in KTU2 1.4.IV.24 and 1.10.III.6, respectively),[7] his *compassionate nature* (lţpn il dp’id, *“Kind El, the Compassionate One,”* e.g., KTU2 1.16.IV.9), his role as *father of the gods and humanity* (’ab ’adm, *“father of humanity,”* KTU2 1.14..III.47, and bny bnwt, *“creator of creatures,”* KTU2 1.17.I.24) and *creator of the cosmos.* [8] El was the *divine King* (e.g., KTU2 1.2.III.5-6) and the *head of the pantheon or divine council* (referred to variously as the dr ’il, *“circle of El/Family of El,”* KTU2 1.15.III.19; mpħrt bn ’il, *“the assembly of the sons of El,”* KTU2 1.65.3; bn ’il, *“the sons of El,”* KTU2 1.40.33, 41; pħr kbbm, *“assembly of the stars,”* KTU2 1.10.I.3-4; ‘dt ’ilm, *“assembly of the gods,”* KTU2 1.15.II.7; cf. KTU2 1.2.I; 1.3V; 1.4 IV-V) which met at the sacred mountain. *His consort was the goddess Athirat who bore him seventy sons* (šb‘m bn ’atrt, *“the seventy sons of Athirat,”* KTU2 1.4.VI.46). El was also known for his *divine patronage and blessing of progeny to humans* (as in the Epic of Kirta; see, for example, KTU2 1.14.III.46-51), for his *appearances to humans in dreams* (e.g., KTU2 1.14.I.35-37), as *being a healer* (KTU2 1.16.V-VI), and for his *dwelling at the sacred mountain* (e.g., KTU2 1.2.III.5-6) at the *sources of the mythical rivers* (KTU2 1.2.III.4; 1.3.V.6; 1.4.IV.20-22; 1.17.V.47-48) in a *tent* (KTU2 1.2.III.5; 1.3.V.8; 1.4.IV.24; 1.17.V.49; c.f. the Canaanite myth Elkunirša which *describes El’s abode as a tent[9]).[10]*
*To underscore the fact that terminology and imagery originally used for the god El was adopted by the Israelites in their descriptions of YHWH,* the following brief summary might be placed in comparison to the discussion of El above: YHWH is an *aged, patriarchal deity* (Ps. 102:28; Job 36:26; Is. 40:28; Dan. 7.9-14, 22), *a father* (Deut. 32:6; Is. 63:16; 64:7; Jer. 3:4, 19; 31:9, etc.), *merciful and gracious* (Ex. 34:6; Jon. 4:2; Joel 2:13; Ps. 8615; 103:8; 145:8, etc.), *a divine patron who bestows the blessing of progeny upon Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,* often manifesting himself in *dreams or visions, a healer* (Gen. 20:17; Num. 12:13; 2 Kgs. 20:5, 8; Ps. 107:20, etc.), who *dwells in a tent* (Ps. 15:1; 27:6; 91:10; 132:3) *amidst the heavenly waters* (Ps. 47:5; 87; Is. 33: 20-22; Ez. 47:1-12, etc.), the *creator of the cosmos,* who is enthroned as *heavenly King* in the *divine council* (1 Kgs. 22:19; Is. 6:1-8; cf. Ps. 29:1-2; 82; 89: 5-8, etc.) on the *sacred mount of assembly* (e.g., Is. 14:13). Additionally, in much Israelite religious practice throughout the monarchic period, *YHWH had a divine consort, the goddess Asherah, the Hebrew equivalent of Ugaritic Athirat.[11]* (Originally the wife of El)

Derek, great video! I especially like the ending when you showed some vulnerability about your journey.
I found your channel almost two years ago in sort of a backwards version of your journey. From the time I was 16 until now (38). I was/is an atheist. I grew up non religious in a multi religious family. When you grow up as everything you kind of grow up as nothing.
I found your channel because my family somehow ended up going to a church in our community and I was attending a Bible study. I felt some of the attendees had toxic interpretations of the text. I like debate and dialogue and I wanted to give the Bible study group other options for interpretation. I didn’t want to just be atheist guy and say “Evolution…. Science… 13.8 bya universe… etc” I wanted to engage with them through the text they hold sacred and I found your channel while researching and I have been a huge fan ever since. Great work as always.
My family and I still attend church I am still at least an agnostic/atheist but I find the community wholesome and the pastoral staff inspiring. But now I get to envision Dionysus, Adapa and Baal when I am in the pew.

I kinda gave up on Christianity or really any Abrahamic religion once I read enough for it to have painted itself into the "Superman" corner. The biggest, the father, all knowing, etc. But it opens up questions of why a god who is so powerful simply allows terrible things or causes even worse things. One big god didn't make sense. I ended up a polytheist.

Derek: in order not to beat yourself up, do what we Chinese people have done for millennia. We celebrate our myths. Having dragons, phoenixes and all kinds of mythological creatures in our spirituality is actually quite fun! That’s why we have the Tao/Dao. The ultimate reality or the Divine is unknowable. Until we get reunited with it, it’s okay to know it through the deities and other types of myths.

Imo after reading the Ugarit mythology.. Baal Hadad fought Yamm (sea) and said "i will scatter you across the desert in a multitude of drops" and then 100's of years later Moses comes out of Egypt with this "new" god named YHWH.. Yamm is mostly written in Ugarit as "YW". Now look at all the metaphors of water connected to Yahweh in the Bible (more significant then the storm ones] up to the religion claiming "the living water" all the way down to the story of Jesus on the water where he shows that you dont have to fear of the sea (walking on water) and can weather the storm (Baal Hadad). You can find a direct relation between the biblical text of Lucifer and the Epics of Baal. (Isiah 14-12-14) vs Baal wanting to set up his tent on the mountain of the pantheon. (Does also shows that in the Bible the pantheon and their gods were rebranded to "Angels". Taking away their godly titles to confirm the monotheism of the Bible.

In the Mesopotamian flood myth (written at least 1000 years before the bible), you have Enlil as the god who sends the flood to destroy the humans, and you have Enki as the god who runs off to tell his favorite person to build a boat so he can save his family. Enki was also the god that created humans out of clay in the first place. It seems to me that over time, the myth combined these two gods into one. Anytime you have a vengeful god in the bible, it probably references older stories about Enlil, and anytime you see the more loving side of god, it references stories about Enki. Both these gods were gods of water. They were the sons of An, the highest, cosmic-creator god who lived in the uppermost part of the heavens, and had little to do with the earth. Enlil was responsible for rain, or water coming down from above, while Enki was responsible for ground water, or water coming up from below. Both were seen as critical for farming, but for different types of ground. Ground that was self-watered from springs was seen as the most precious and life-giving, while ground that had to rely on rain would have been more uncertain. Plus, storms could be temptestuous. Enlil was believed to rule the constelations of the northern (or upper) sky, while Enki was said to rule the ones of the southern (or lower) sky. It's a clear hierarchy, with Enlil being the elder brother, and closer to his father, but more distant and less concerned with humans. Enki, the younger brother, was often depicted as helping humans, and being among them. He was said to live in a well of life-giving water in the ground, and there are myths about promethean-type beings coming out of the well to deliver knowledge and wisdom to humanity. These were sometimes carved on walls to look like fish-men. Moreover, they saw Enki as the representation of the constelation that we now call Aquarius, and drew him with streams of water pouring off of his shoulders.

@izzycurer1260 im well aware of the Sumerian mythology.. tho in the tales in Ugarit you wont find direct resemblances with the ones from Sumer.. but here is the interesting thing. In the pantheon of Ugarit.. EL the synpreme god calls all his sub gods his childeren but they are not all of his bloodline/creation. Baal Hadad's father is Dagan, which is a Mesopotamian god (and he is depicted as a half fish).. Baal is like a stepson/adopted and he is fighting for his place in the pantheon of EL. Yamm (YW) is the apple of EL's eye [his beloved son before Baal enters on the seen].. it's kinda evident of the injection of the Mesopotamic injection into the region of Ugarit [modern day Syria]. But prior of the Baal Cycle it was Yamm who was EL's champion.. the writings in Ugarit starts when Baal enters the scene and Yamm is the main god under EL. The thing that makes Ugarit interesting is that they wrote Cuneiform solely in an Alphabetic form (where Sumerian cuneiform consists out of words, letters and pictograms), also they found the first musical score written in the Ugaritic cuneiform. . And yes a lot of the biblical stories are based on those you can find in Sumer but they dont explain where Yahweh comes from.. and imo the answer lies in Ugarit.. see when Baal slays slays Yamm (sea) or better yet the religion of Yamm, he tells says he will scatter them across the desert (forced out of the region) and they likely ended up as slaves in Egypt. Many generation later they lost their origin story.. these descendants managed to escape Egypt and were trying to find their way home and with their fractured stories they inheritted from their parents, grand parents etc and influences from other peoples that ended up as slaves in Egypt plus the Egyptian culture they were born into, the cult of Yahweh was born. They took this back to Canaan and tried (and succeeded) to establish dominance in the region.. the biblical stories are clear about their influences.. Abraham came from UR (a sumerian region during the time of the URIII perios).. Moses was an orphan (like their culture was) and grew up with the ways of the Egyptian culture.. nobody should be suprised that the bible has so many similar stories from other cultures/beliefs.. the origin of "the ancient Jews" is that they were (E)Gypsies of the ancient near east. Spiritual and cultural orphans. A collection of encountered cultures all woven into a new one over time.

@@izzycurer1260 Apparently it's not certain that the number was 72, I just found this:
"The idea that Canaan had "72 deities" is not definitively supported by historical evidence; while the Canaanite pantheon was quite large with numerous gods and goddesses, the number 72 is not specifically mentioned in any known texts and is likely a later interpretation based on biblical references, potentially relating to the "70 sons of El" in Ugaritic mythology, which may be understood as representing a large number of lesser deities under the supreme god El."

I think Dr Sledge Hammer might be on to something by suggesting the angst you describe is potentially a subconscious projection towards your old self delusion, Derek. If that's the case then simply forgiving your former self and all the things you said and did might very well resolve the feelings you described.
From one human to another allow me to assist in this resolution by commending your current work in the strongest terms I can muster. Popularizing historically verifiable perspectives of the origins of ancient religions is the single most effective way of addressing and eliminating the harms done by the modern perversions of those ancient concepts today.
Keep up the good work but find the balance you need to make it a rewarding experience and not a burden.
And while you're at it, maybe try forgiving the trolls as well. Their bad behavior is driven by a deep psychological need to protect their concepts from being exposed as mere human imagination. I describe religion as palliative care for the treatment of chronic intolerance of metaphysical uncertainty. I'm very sympathetic to sufferers of this malady at this particular point in human evolution.
