This was the 2nd game of a 4 game winning streak. The Cards beat the Cowboys the week before then the Redskins the week after. Then blew out the Eagles. Only to go on a typical Cardinal losing streak losing 3 in a row to the Rams, Cowboys, and Giants by a combined total of 16 points meaning they had to win the last 4 to win the division and make the playoffs. They won 3 beating the Giants, Eagles, and Patriots(meaning the Cards beat the next season's Super Bowl teams by a combined score of 71-31) only to lose the season ending heartbreaker in Washington. This team had so much potential but they were too inconsistent and streaky. Then they went into the toilet and didn't emerge from it until 1998.

Wow, they really went at it. Had to play rough to beat the Bears. Cardinals were not a terrible team. Had some great defensive players. Roughest game I ever saw was that year - Bears vs Raiders.

I attended that game. If the Cardinals had beaten the Redskins in the last game, this would have been a first round rematch at Busch

2 games killed them that season. The first was a week 1 loss to the Packers thanks to spaghetti legged O'Donahue missing an extra point. The 2nd was the 16-13 loss to the Rams in week 10. A game they led 13-3 at halftime but they turned the ball over 4 times and wasted a 341 yard day by Lomax. They also couldn't stop Eric Dickerson who ran for over 200 yards.

Notice how the Cardinal players are wearing a football badge with a "25". That was to celebrate their 25th year in St Louis. They would only be there for three more years.

this was a heartbreaking season for the Cardinals, they took the season all the way to the last game but came up short with a close loss to the Redskins, they lost 4 extremely close games by a combined total of 18 points to get edged out of the playoffs with a 9-7 record losing a bad tiebreaker to the New York Giants (the Giants were allowed to play 2 additional conference games which they split, and supposedly, because they technically had more " conference wins" then the Cardinals, they got into the playoffs). They'd never get another chance at the playoff in St. Louis again as the Skins and Giants would dominate the division for the next several years followed by the Cowboys after that even after their move out west.

Actually, there was a 3 way tie between the Cards, Cowboys, and Giants and the Giants had a better head to head record because they swept the Cowboys that season giving them a 3-1 record against the other 2 teams while the Cards split with both(2-2).
