My parents had season tickets since 1966, when they moved to Busch2 until the day they skipped town. I started caddying at local private country club and I saved enough money to buy my own. It was a family tradition starting in Sept. and ending in Dec. Unfortunately, the were bad most of the time, but there was some good footballs players to play for the Big Red. Larry Wilson, who revolutionized the safety position. He basically invented the safety blitz. Jim Hart, who arguably should be in the HOF. Jackie Smith, one of best, toughest TE to ever play. Mel Gray, the undersized speedster who no one could catch. Terry Metcalf, one of the 1st. dual threat RB. Roger Wehrli, the original shutdown corner. Ask Roger Staubach and Drew Pearson. Pearson got his occasional TD, but it’s Drew Pearson. Otis Anderson, the best Big RB to ever play for the football Cardinals. “Jet Stream”. Need I say more? One of my favorites, Stump Mitchel. Any so many. The Rams temporarily eased the pain, but I still miss the Big Red. Notice I didn’t mention what’s his name. I’m just sayin.

Those L.A. fans sure love their football. It must have been Halloween, all the fans were dressed as empty seats. If it weren’t for the opposing teams fans, SoFi stadium would be half empty.

I just learned the entire trip was bankrolled by one, hyper-passionate second-generation (nisei) Japanese-American, Frank Takahashi. Takahashi grew-up in Southern California, became a wealthy lettuce farmer (supplying Safeway) and would fly to see USC, UCLA, high school, and his beloved Chargers play games. He also did things like fly to go see Ali-Foreman in the the Rumble in the Jungle. I read a Japanese interview in 1975 where he was hinting that he planned to do something like this, and a year later we saw this. Locally it was called the Mainichi Star Bowl (after a newspaper). Frank hoped it would sell-out as the college all-star game would, but attendance was lower than he hoped so he lost a bit of money (he was still rich) -- in his ultimate dream he hoped it would've been such a success that Japan got a team and he could be the owner.

the president of the united states, john fitzgerald kennedy assassinated 2 days earlier. notice the demeanor of the players, most weren't happy about having to play... none of the nfl games (7 of them) were broadcast live, the 3 networks were wall to wall coverage of the assassination and funeral. lee harvey oswald, kennedy's assassin was gunned down 39 minutes before 12 o'clock games started. the vietnam war would escalate under johnson as president, and little to no mention of the war (for years) made broadcast t.v. other than the nightly news. the smothers brothers were infamously cancelled for ignoring warnings from cbs to stop with the political commentary against the war and nixon. they were the top-rated show at the time.

Didn't recognize Joe Walton without his hat on backwards. Head shots of Cardinals players taken 9/28 at Forbes Field Pittsburgh. @ 4:29 the stacked up chairs behind end zone are the original box seat chairs from when The Stadium opened in 1923. They were replaced in 1947-8 as part of renovations that also moved Yanks dugout to 1st base side. The "first blood"description was a bad choice of words considering the circumstances the past week. Even as a wise-guy Brooksie couldn't be that tone deaf?
