DJI LIDAR Pro Rigging - The Missing Component!

- The DJI LIDAR units are notoriously difficult to rig. After scouring gear sites, I finally found an uncommon solution, the dogbone!
Rod Offset Brackets (dogbones) are expensive but worth it, and bring the LIDAR Pro FINALLY into a riggable state. The one I'm using here is the Chrosziel EU-15.
Next thing would be to get a 15mm to NATO adapter with some kind of horizontal flexibility: being able to slide the LIDAR unit left and right.
Also next thing, get some right angle proprietary DJI USB-C cables to clean up the cable mess.
Hope this helps. Let me know in the comments if you think of other ways to rig the DJI Focus Pro.
Would be cool to have some links in the description. Especially for m3 scews and washer sizes.
right? thats why my dude has only 51 subs....he figured it out for himself....good for you dude lol
Me looking at this: " 'aight, imma buy an autofocus camera."
Nice! Thans for the tip! What about the functionality of the Lidar Pro? Does it focus flawlessly? What about low light and distance? It is a reliable auto focus product? Pros and cons?
Hey, you're most welcome! The LiDAR Pro offers a mostly accurate readout, but the controls from the RS4 and DJI Focus Handle make it close to unusable IMO. On one shoot, I had to completely pull it off because it was so frustrating. The flange distance was completely off making close focus completely inaccurate. There's all sorts of bugs as well and it's not a reliable autofocus unit at all, although the technology is cool. The most frustrating is that my lens profiles saved aren't accurate when re-loaded, or that sometimes the unit thinks infinity focus is before the end of the lens, which requires a new calibration and luck, since it doesn't always work. If you're using a mirrorless body, the most reliable autofocus is going to come from the native lenses for that system and in body autofocus. This system still needs a generation or two.
@@kevinmpham thanks for sharing your experience. I think that there is another product that maybe work better, I think it is called PDMOVI.
can you give us the size of the washers and when you got them did you have to buy a whole kit or can you just buy the piece? Thanks
if you're constantly moving the Lidar, are you constantly having to recalibrate - since your distance from the sensor keeps changing?
@@Heschle hi there! from top rod to bottom rod? If so, no, since I line up the tips of the rods using the max retraction position from the bottom rod (bottom rod is touching the camera body). Then for the dogbone, I always make sure it’s at the very end of the rod. Though, the LiDAR Pro sometimes doesn’t calculate correctly even if you input the measured distance. There’s a bit of guess and check in that situation.
@@kevinmpham rad, this makes sense. Thx for explaining 🙏🏼
What inch rods are u using by kondor blue on top and bottom also what’s the small rig piece u are using to screw into the kondor blue mini lock system ?
I'm using a 6" but measure your 15mm rod bracket to where the lens gear is on your longest lens and get one like that.
@@kevinmpham what is the name of small rig piece you are using that attached to kondor blue mini lock ?
Another thing u didn’t mention is your top plate ? I’m using Komodo and I don’t have same top plate to mount the 6 inch rod or do I?
Top Plate would be tricky with Komodo. Consider mounting a rod mount off a side plate. I like the Mid49 ones.
@@kevinmpham what small rig clamp are u using with the kondor blue mini lock ?
@@kevinmpham the Komodo x top plate by kondor blue has a 15mm rod mount on the top side will that work ?
Can we get links to all these products needed ? Or at least list all of them for us thanks.
I'm in Europe, so I don't know where to get everything in the US. I'll make a list for future videos though, since that seems to be a recurring theme.
Will the kondor blue rod block work like the Chrosziel eu15 ? The kondor blue one has a screw in the middle ?
It would work, but ideally you want something with a smaller width than the standard 60mm, which it looks like the Kondor Blue rod block has.

@@kevinmpham is the chrosziel wu15 smaller with than the 60mm ? Or is the kondor blue rod block smaller or are both smaller than 60mm ?
@@kevinmphamwhat “dog bone” do u have the chrosziel ue15?
@@creativegreatsvisuals chrosziel is smaller. Kessler Crane makes a dogbone too, kesslercrane.com/products/15mm-motor-offset-dogbone-bracket
search "dogbone offset bracket 15mm" - cinemilled also makes a 45mm one that's "unavailable"
the lidar looks good underneath the lens, especially when using a matte box. is there a particular reason to put it on top of the lens? thank you
@@cyvidal10 when the LiDAR is underslung, sometimes it can’t see stuff that’s in the upper 1/4 of camera frame; the LiDAR will be best rigged depending on where your subject is.
Yeah, the flag gets in way mounted on top. I'm still looking for best way to mount one of these to bottom rails. Interesting idea, but think I'm going to just machine a c bracket to attach to lidar underneath to rail mount. That way it's just out of way and can slide to end of lenses. Sucks to have to measure to focal plane each time.
@@prOkrEAt nice, yeah if you’re capable of making one that’s a great option! Might be worth making a few different heights if you’re dealing with different lens diameters. What’s nice about the dogbone is it gives me enough options without ever having to remeasure the distance.
@@kevinmpham I may give this a go. Just wondering about different lens lengths. Ideally you would set it for longest lens to be unobstructed, but then perhaps it comes into frame of ultra wide angle lens 🤷 just a couple things I'm thinking through. Even some pancake lenses. Soon though I'll steady out my lens selections and try to find a good middle ground. And still learning this DJI lidar system anyway. Currently have a bug between handle and rs4 pro handle in firmware inconsistency. Ideally I'd like a rig I can slap camera on that can go between hand held and gimbal and not have to reorient everything. It's a lot to ask for 🤣
@@prOkrEAt Understood! This tech is still in its infancy, and is definitely not something you can grab and go. There's a lot of finessing to be done and it will definitely add time to your lens swaps. Sometimes, even when you measure out the correct distance to sensor plane, the focus is still off and you have to manually and arbitrarily set the focus distance.
Nice! I laughed when I saw the already bent type-c cables. I have a bent one already, and it's only a second day of home-made tests. They are too short
Yeah they're a joke. I already have one broken one. Perhaps the right angle cables would be better?
@@kevinmpham I suppose angled on motor and straight on handgrip. But DJI won't ever make one I'm 100% certain
@@alexlubensky but they are available so many places, cheap, and endless lengths and right or straight angles. And adapters as well. I do use their trick coiling around rails to shorten excess. One problem I have is their HDMI reaching raveneye unit currently on one setup I have. But switching to their Transmission system here soon anyway.
@@prOkrEAt other cables don’t fit physically into the pro grip. It’s made in a way that usual type-c cable from other brand won’t fit, the plastic piece around the connector is usually bigger than the ones that DJI have.
@@alexlubensky I was thinking more between motors. What's going to be more interesting I have on way is their power distro hub. Has the dual USB connector... But has the dtap to get power bank running effectively (USB won't supply enough power to their handle battery, still decharges when running lidar+gimbal). Also gimbal doesn't have that issue, but pretty sure this USB connected to my phone right now is exact same size to fit handle. I do notice on my setup the cable between handle and motors is too short on some lenses and too long to lidar depending on location. Just fx3 with handle on right side and motors on left due to where their motor is and my focus ring needs to be. Can't put them on right ride with handle or it hits fx3 grip.
