- A custom version of the song "Travelers" by Andrew Prahlow from the game Outer Wilds. Instruments fade in one at a time and play together (banjo, harmonica, flute, whistle, drums, piano, synth).
This is an updated version including the new traveler instrument from the Echoes of the Eye DLC!

I like to headcannon that since Esker is the loneliest traveler, the one least checked on or visited, he’s also the leading tune in the song. This may not be true but since his is the loudest I like to imagine the others are accompanying him as their way of saying “we’re with you buddy”
It does really sound like that, if you pair any specific instrument with Esker, they either use the same notes, or provide a backing tune
When I played through the endings I always had the moral obligation of having Esker start the first, or after Riebeck.
They just deserved it
I had prisoner go first because he began it all tbf buttt I always felt the whistle or the banjo were the loudest to me esters hominca always felt like the vocals behind the whistle like esker was doing the speaking while everyone else played a tune of remembrance for him and the other lost travelers
The truth is that the whistle is a very high-pitched instrument.
“How beautiful. It’s different than I’d envisioned.
Whatever happens next, I do not think it is to be feared."
“Don’t cry because it’s gone, smile because it happened.”
can i do both?
@@ShadowWitt course you can
Tears of joy
Welcome to the campfire friends, wanna take it some more moments before the song starts?
I’m just gonna sit here and cry and smile
"I have only known you for a short time, but in that time I feel as if we have become friends.
Even if my song is different to yours, let me sing along with you, if only for short while." - Solanum, the Last Nomai.
i cant seem to find that second quote anywhere, where did you find it?
nah, not the last nomai, remember there are modern nomai messages in the vessel saying that the universe is dying
She's the last nomai in that solar system, though
2:10 "Thank you for remembering me." 😭 You ever want to hug a character just **SO BADLY**
I wanted so bad to have a dialog option for “Of course I would remember you Solanum, we’re friends” because I truly felt that way too.
@@FandresvcYou’re going to make me cry!
@Fandresvc 2:10 is when the prisoner begins playing and his diologue is "thank you for remembering me" but I agree solanum was also friend. But prisoner made me cry a few times
@@tylercrain2831 Solanum does say "I'm glad you remembered me" at the end. I also don't remember the Prisoner saying something like that, though they do ask you if you want to remember them
@LioTangg yes and if you say yes then when you speak to gim he says thank you for remembering me then tells you a story of his people and begins to play and time wise that is when the prisoner begins to play I don't remember solanum line he may also say thank you for remembering me which kinda makes sense for both of them to say that
That new instrument encapsulates the new DLC so well. Trying to avoid spoilers, it's just so nostalgic, melancholic, and even slightly creepy sounding. It almost sounds like someone singing out of sadness and regret, all while carrying a glimpse of hope.
I feel exactly the same, his instrument really sounds like a regret and a hope to achieve a better future
When I saw the instruments at the lodge, man
I played echoes of the eye and I didn't feel as content as I wanted to be with the ending as I thought I would be, but I was still happy about it. For good memories, I went to get the old ending and I saw the new instrument pop up and I immediately wanted to cry out in joy.
It sounds like they are crying. Don't know if that really makes sense. But it's like the cry one does after holding it in for a few years and just letting it all out.
It feels that way because it makes use of the seventh note of the C scale (a B note), which is the third note played in the song! Playing the B in a C chord makes it a Cmaj7, which gives it that cool, liminal sound.
After hearing this the original version just feels like it's missing something, like this is how it always was.
In a sense... it is
It was always there, you just hadn't remembered it yet. Like before you remembered the piano! :)
It was always there, we just haven’t seen them until now.
There is still something missing I think, but I think I will never be satisfied and that as we learn at the beginning of the game in the village, this music can not be perfect, it will always miss someone until everyone at all times have put their personal touch to the music.
I saw your comment on the other outer wilds video Kitty in the woods
Just realized the Nomai’s rush to find the source of the signal was genius, they hadn’t even known that the signal had been blocked again mere moments after it was released. The Nomai truly were doomed from the beginning
It really sucks that literally nothing the nomai could've done could save them. Either doom the universe by not warping or die a horrific death to a passing comet
@@lolucorn1 Well, the project worked, sadly only through failure of what they needed at the time.
They did brought, if not salvation for their own tribe and universe, at least a legacy in the next one.
@@lolucorn1 I mean, one of the whole messages of the game was 'you may not be around to see what comes next, but you can be the one to build it, and make things better for those who come after you'
Even then it’s nice to know they indirectly succeeded.
“Though the Nomai never got to live to see it, thanks to their effort and technology, a Hearthian was able to reach the Eye of the Universe.”
I feel a lot of people dismisses or dislike Esker because he doesn't have an instrument and is simply whistling the tune. But he really is pouring his soul into whistling that little ditty at the end of the world.
If anyone tries to tell me that Esker's whistling ISN'T the heart and soul of this song, I will personally meet them at the Dairy Queen parking lot, 7:30pm for fisticuffs galore
Esker is my main man. Love him.
put his entire eskussy into that one
People dislike esker?
I can’t imagine disliking Esker just because they whistle. That’s so odd lmao
Esker is amazing
I feel like if this game had to be summed up in a sentence it would be
"No matter how bad things get
(the literal death of the universe)
there is always hope and a better tomorrow"
yeah.. pretty much cause at the end of the canon ending with the eyes of the echoes we see other species enjoying an the owlkin revived an in joyous prosper
there is hope for a better tomorrow an to a better future for all kind
I love how The Prisoner's theremin sounds like a cold, saddened, yet joyful wailing. Which is probably what The Prisoner felt like, having tried to correct a mistake and being punished for it, only to be freed by a kind stranger. They're a tragic and sympathetic character that only wanted what was best for their people. I'm glad that they at least got a proper resolution for everything.
To think that his people were so afraid of passing away and be forgotten that they hid the eye. But thanks to you finding the stranger, a part of them is in the foundation of this new universe.
You can't free the prisoner in your last loop, as you'd have to die in order to do so and then somehow get to the eye (impossible).
The Prisoner's ultimate fate is to remain a prisoner, never learning of the importance of their actions.
@@alansmithee419 Despite that, they're still remembered by the Hatchling at the end; even if they never know it and just die in the resulting big bang, they still become part of that journey to reshape the universe. It really is tragic, but somehow uplifting at the same time...
@@alansmithee419 Technically, with infinite time over many loops, you could guess the combinations in order to free the prisoner without dying (this is possible as the codes have been datamined), however the prisoner, like all the others in the stranger, are long dead
@@alansmithee419 There are actual combinations to the three pillars in the subterranean lake, of which the third one turns off the overhead light that alerts the bells of your presence. And if you exit the simulation after freeing the prisoner, you can see their corpse in the now opened sealed vault in the real world.
P.S. It is actually possible to meet Solanum, free the prisoner, and enter the eye to get the true ending in a single loop without dying if you are fast enough.
I once saw a comment saying "This game is literally about the friends we made along the way." how true that is
I wish you could talk more to the others travelers. Riebeck has dialog relevant to the nomai, but the others travelers, once you asked them some questions, they dont have new dialog...
I think I always read too much in games' songs, but... Solanum line sounds so dreamy and hopeful; while the Prsioner's is so full of sadness and longing...
All around, the Herthians simple song gives unity and a sense of place for what would otherwise be disperse.
This song is fucking amazing.
It's not just you, everyone thinks the prisoners theramin sounds so sad like he was longing for a different life but glad things turned out the way it did. Feels like a silent cry to me
@@horror_game999elegy for the rings starts playing…
@@eugzo are you saying that the prisoner played elegy for the rings in this song?
i dont hear it.
It's also a very easy melody two learn, so you can join in the melody yourself :]
It’s dark, a little cold, and here I am on the front porch eating a bowel of chili listening to the sounds of the Outer Wilds and cicadas. What a life God has allowed me to live.
I love how the song progresses. At first, Riebec, who was always interested in the true story of the nomai, captivates your ears with his banjo, only to be taken over by Feldspar, never afraid to head towards another adventure awaiting him in even the darkest place possible, playing on his harmonica, Gabbro joins in, perfecting his skill with his flute as he waits for another cyclone to sweep him off the planet, Eskar's whistling comes to the forefront as he remembers the whole of your specie's progress while waiting, perhaps for another ship to need him once more, then Chert's drums as he plays for the funeral of the Universe. Solanum joins with their piano celebrating the end of their Specie's journey, even if finished by another, and finally, the stranger, tugging at the strings of his invisible theremin, crying for what his specie's done, yet celebrating what the universe achieved.
The culmination of all these songs makes makes me super emotional, and I wish I could relive it again. I am happy to have witnessed this game. And I shall remember it forever.
I feel exactly the same I will always think this is the best thing ever made but you cant experience it ever again it was breathe taking while I was playing it
You got the pronouns reversed, Hearthians are genderless and Solanum is female
I was already sobbing but "celebrating the end of her species' journey, even if finished by another" completely finished me
It's so beautiful. You're so right
You tryna make me cry?
Tears ahead, therefore time for friendship
Ah yes, the dark souls message comment. A classic.
Don't give up, skeleton!
Be wary of dark, in short praise the sun! ☀\[T]/☀

This game helped me during a rough time. My boyfriend introduced this game to me beginning of this year, January to be specific. See my grandfather died on January 30th, 2022. It broke me, this game distracted me from that reality. When I met Esker he reminded me so much of my grandpa. Especially with how he sits in his little rocking chair, it all screamed “Grandpa” It comforted me in a way I guess… I really can’t listen to this without crying. It reminds me of him, when I discovered at the edge of the universe you can hear your friends pass off, it completely wrecked me.
But! Instead of becoming horribly bitter, this game did make light on his passing. Yes he was here for a moment of my life, but his “song”.. his story will stick with me until I have my own children. I will always forever dwell on the what ifs or the could’ve beens that’s life. I wish he could’ve had a grandfather/granddaughter dance. I wish he could watch me walk up a stage to receive my next degree. But like in outer wilds I could either just stay in a infinite loop or take hold of my destiny. Healing isn’t easy yall I’ll tell you that. But this simple camp fire song has helped immensely in my healing process.
Anyways I’m rambling, TL;DR: song make me think of grandpa and heart goes :(
I can't believe the emotional journey this game makes you go through. I want to forget everything to relive it again, but at the same time I never want to forget it.
EXATO
You made me cry
That's the same outlook I have on life. Whatever pain, or joy, or mistakes you've experienced, it's still your story. I've made so many mistakes, and yet I wouldn't change it for the world. They are what brought me to where I am now, and that's special.
It’s insane how many emotions this song communicates with zero words being spoken. Genuine chills every single time
It’s the perfect encapsulation of how intimate the experience of playing music with others can be. Everyone has one goal, everyone works together, and above all else, everyone is welcome. The song is beautiful not in *spite* of everyone’s differences, but *because* of them.
Way back in high school marching band I had what I would describe as a transcendent experience where I felt fully and truly connected with everyone else, and I am 100% serious when I say that it was genuinely one of the happiest moments of my entire life
It made me want to explore, to savor the time I have, as some day my "story" too will end. As ridiculous as it is to place a video game up so high and attribute these things to it, it's a masterpiece. For that, I love it.
Me too man, and I don't think it's ridiculous at all
It definitely made me think hard about my life. I've had games hit me emotionally before, but never in a way this game has. It sounds dumb, but it's helped me come to terms with death. To accept the inevitable and enjoy the time I'm given.
Checkpoint...
Not ridiculous, I think. If I had to pick one game only to recommend, it'd be this.
Absolutely not ridiculous of you, games are an artistic medium as valid as any other. And this particular story is one that could *only* be told in the form of a game, or else it would lose so much of what makes it unique. It’s a deeply existential tale full of wonder, sorrow, and hope, and to call it anything less than a true masterpiece is a disgrace
The Prisioner, Trapped in his cage for some 200,000 years and counting, is the sole reason we were able to save our friends.
He is the real hero of this story. Mad respect to you, Rest in peace, Forevermore shall you be remembered. Dearest Owlkin.
May your song continue and echo in the next universe.
I was like WHAT! When I found out that he Eyes signal stopped because of the Strangers. And then the fact that for the few seconds the probe was de activated freeing the eyes signal the Nomai found it and immediately warped is crazy.
@@FranklinThe1 If one throws a ball into space one must imagine somewhere. .somehow there is already somebody with the idea that one day this might happen and is ready to catch.
well, we didn’t really save our friends, just made new ones :)
I mean... spoilers but... you don't save your friends... not even yourself.
No, it was because of his sacrifice that there would be something after everything ended.

The outer wilds dev team casually making the perfect song:
Out of all the games I wish I could experience for the first time again, this one takes the cake. Without a doubt.
No other video game melody will ever give me the feels the same way this song does. I know im a dime a dozen, but this game made me feel emotions that i cant explain
All that work, effort, confusion, for a theremin...
Still brings a tear to my eye.
Absolutely worth it.
I’ve been playing this with my five year old son, and its been the most beautiful example of death, and the importance of leaving a legacy that I’ve ever seen.
For those who are ever curious, the composer himself of The Prisoners music posted on a reddit AMA that it's "The combination of the signals of a synth, a bayou slide guitar made out of an antique door from New Orleans (probably haunted), and a guitar loop." about 3 months ago.
"This song is new to me. But I am honored to be a part of it"
❤
The violin-like instrument the prisoner plays sounds so sad. His people were so afraid. :(
"My kind were not always this way" like who hurt them? ::(
The eye
it's a theremin irl
@PallyK it's also a weird stringed instrument with a music box cylinder
Edit: it's distinctly Animusic-esque
@PallyK It is kind of the opposite of the Nomai in a way. The Nomai risked everything to learn more about the Eye, no matter the consequences, while the Stranger's inhabitants once realizing the truth tried all they can to hide away in fear, even creating a simulation of the world they left. In the end I feel the game teaches that even when confronted with scary truths, always stand firm in the pursuit of knowledge and live your finite life to the best.
I always had your original Travelers video in my chrome tabs, always open to constantly remind myself of my favorite game. For the first time in about a year, I closed that tab. Because now I have a better one. Thank you.

I can say with pride that the Prisoner's tune is what was missing. This song sounded perfect, but was missing one more thing. I love how you can hear all the different possibilities for the new universe in this song. The adventure, fear, confidence, not giving two shits, it all comes together. If I could speak with Andrew Prahlow, I would thank him for bringing this song into our world.

The great review
I have never completed Outer Wilds myself, but I do know about everything I didn't find, and knowing all that, discovering all that over hours, that just makes this song so incredibly beautiful beyond description

This song perfectly encapsulates death and moving on, and how important it is to cherish every moment and memory. Absolutely beautiful ending to a masterpiece of a game.
Oh, you DID add him, what a lovely thing, thank you.
Hail the prisoner whose actions echoed from the far distant past to the very end of the Universe
I listened to the entire OST like a madman

The best goddamn game ending I’ve ever seen. This game absolutely changed my life.
Holy shit. When the piano part starts, it just completely stuns me. And then the bird boi's theremin plays quietly in the background. It's so perfect
When I die, I hope my last moments are this song as I fade out into infinity as I remember my happiest moments.

This song has been the song I hum most frequently to my newborn son. Such a lovely song.
I love this song and this videogame, it always helps me in anxiety peaks and takes me "home" when I want to be calm... I love you so much outer wilds and music, and I love what you transmit, grateful ❤️❤️
So I don't know if this is 100% correct, but I think that the real life musical instrument they used for the prisoner is the musical saw and not the theremin. After listening to people playing the saw on youtube, I can say that they sound very similar and it seems to fit the MO of the game. The rest of the instruments (banjo, harmonica etc) are mostly associated with American folk music, with the notable exception of Solanum's piano. The prisoner could be playing the theremin just to emphasise their alien-ness. But considering the rustic style of the stranger and the American folk music roots of the other insruments, the musical saw just makes more sense as it is also an instrument used in folk music
I think you're right about this one
Yeah, I also did this and would agree about the saw. It sounded much lighter than the theremin and more similar.
OMG WOW EVERY TIME A NEW INSTRUMENT CAME I UNLOCKED A HIGHER LEVEL OF NOSTALGIC CHILL
"I think we will create a new universe with the memories of all humanity, and then, other universes will be created, in a cycle forever, in a beautiful but scary way"
"True love is possible, only in the next world, for new people"
Whatever happens next, I do not think it is to be feared.
The addition of the Theremin sounds amazing!!
This song made me very very emotional the first time i heard it after finishing the dlc. I literally cried for 10 minutes, because of the memory, the nostalgia, the feelings this game brought to me, because of everything you know, it was not very logical. It was just something I could only feel, and feel deeply. This song is a masterpiece
the music in this game is just so incredible. easily one of my most memorable games ive ever played, which is frustrating because i cant play it again for the first time.
thank you for this.
The owl's addition on the theremin brings me some kind of melancholy vibe that I didn’t feel on the previous version. I felt hope before, now I feel… sorrow
I love this game with my whole heart and soul, and can never forget it. In an odd way, I also hate it for being so incredible and perfectly unforgettable, that I can never experience it for the first time ever again, how it was intended.
This song is so perfect the only thing that feels left out is... well, you. You are the one that created the new universe and yet... here you stand, listening to a band made of 3 races all different but connected through music, but you are not able to join. That's a little sad to me.
Edit : Alright! So it turns out the entire Internet has banded together to tell me how wrong I am. Well, that's fine if you believe you are the band Conductor, but to me, I prefer to think that around a campfire, everyone should have an equal role. So, that's why one last instrument just for you would be a great finishing touch.
Think of yourself as a Conductor of this Band, for you are the one who decides which of the musicians joins in when. You're the one who brought them together. Without you - none of this music would be possible.
Yeah, wish our character gets an instrument too to join them or just have some time near cozy fireplace, watching how Universe dying... and roasting marshmallows
Pro tip: play along in real life (humming works too)
You aren't there to participate though, your job is to just observe.
I usually hum along, or imagine being the conductor with a burnt marshmallow on my baton
I had preconceptions before playing outer wilds, damn even after playing just a fraction of it, it shattered all of those expectations man...good game
In this darkness you've found yourself in, the stars slowly dying in this ancient glade, you're more lost than ever before. And the last of the light has died, leaving you alone with just the trees and quantum rocks.
Except...there's a signal? You travel toward this unknown person to find...a small tree. As you blink, you find the tree getting younger and younger until it becomes a pile of wood surrounded by stones. Your only comfort in this void: a Campfire.
As you sit, warmed up by the fire, and see the trees return, a familiar face pops by your side. Esker, the lonely Hearthian from the Attlerock, sits in their rocking chair. They ask you a simple question.
"Do you hear music?"
You pull out your signalscope and...you hear the sweet sounds of a banjo. Following the sound, you find the remains of a Nomai building, what Archaeologist Riebeck loved most. As the building slowly crumbles, you see their discarded instrument on the ground. You touch it, and the forest returns, with Riebeck now by your side.
You find more signals, and more instruments. The stars that Chert wanted so badly to study, the hammock that Gabbro loved lounging in, the terrifying anglerfish and luminescent jellyfish that Feldspar would fight in a heartbeat. One by one, your friends return to the safe place you all share.
However, there are two more signals, neither of which you recognize. One leads to a shuttle, skeletons of a race long gone building up, and this shuttle leads you to a familiar mask of one of them. Solanum, the last living Nomai. The other leads you to a lone tree, with a dug out grave. You delve into the dark depths, and find remnants of a home long past it's prime. One by one, their family photos fade, until all that remains is the reflection of their fears. Only one was to defy this fear. The Prisoner, who tried to right the wrongs of their people.
Together, you all made music, and a new universe was born from infinite possibilities. Thank you for facing what was hidden in the dark.
wonderful comment
I get that the banjo part is the lifeblood of the song, but it's only right that Esker starts this jam off.
I think all the instruments represent all the character's and race's efforts to contribute to creating a new universe, and that's just so damn cool. (Character specific instruments, Piano for the Nomai, ETC.)
What would you say each instrument represents
awesome, was worried for a sec that I wouldn't be able to hear the best version of this track anymore. good thing I was wrong.
I have no idea why, but the stranger part always reminds me of my cat i had to watch die which happened years before. Really i was fine listening to this but as soon as that part came on it just hits me every time.
I want this to play in my funeral, this is the perfect way to find peace in myself and in everyone around me to not feel sad about it❤
Utter sadness, yet within it, acceptance, a calm joy that whilst all will, at some point, inevitably end, we should not fear that end, for it is only the nature of time. Do as you will with yourself, see, do, taste, smell, *feel* the world around you whilst it lasts
im not crying, you're crying!

Whether Life is Sad,
Or Life is Glad,
Whether existence is great,
Or if existence is Awful,
Whether it's the end of the universe,
Or merely the beginning,
There is one thing that can hold us together.
And that thing is could be Love, Happiness, or even just living...
...But I believe that thing is Music.
And it is Music that will bring a happiness to anyone.
Whether they be sad or happy,
Music will make them feel better.
Listening to this with headphones made me appreciate Gabbro and feldspar more in the song
“I learned a lot, by the end of everything. The past is past, now, but that’s… you know, that’s okay! It’s never really gone completely. The future is always built on the past, even if we won’t get to see it. Still, it’s um, time for something new, now.”
-Riebeck
It's not a game where you save the world, it's a game where you accept that it's the end.
And the owl aliens represent those who can't accept...
I never played this game, but I watched my brother play it and... well, I was never really taken to these sorts of environments; too ominous, overbearing and nearly paradoxical for my 2d oriented mind, but uncovering the solutions to many puzzles and enjoying the music is something that's really stuck with me.
Everything must end at some point. Life cannot exist without death, and a beginning cannot exist without an end.
It’s been amazing to see this game through to the end, and I’m happy to let it go. Any more additions would spoil this end. This has been one of my greatest experiences of all time.
this game is the epidemy of, i wish i could experience it for the first time again
In march of this year I lost my dog... and this game helped me cope with the loss. I wanted so desperately to prolong that last moment with her that moment where she was looking in my eyes with love. To not have to say goodbye. But the end was inevitable. All I could do was hope for the best with what came after.
How is it a 20 second loop can cause me to cry so hard?
I just started playing this game yesterday I got no idea what the hell is going on or how to progress. Earlier today I accidentaly shot myself way outside the system, and figured shit not going back so I just started listening to the song then the star blew up and one by one gone gone gone gone gone gone until it was just me watching the star blow up, I don't even know these characters but I almost cried
Yup, that is the appropriate reaction to the game.
The universe is ending? Ah, wouldn't worry about it. Welcome new friend, come come, we were just about to start. Sit by the fire, take in the view, grab a marshmallow. If you have any instrument it be nice if youd join us. You dont have to, just nice to have some more company.

I love this song so fucking much, the way it radiates both impending doom and hope at the same time , blows my mind
i still can't figure out if this makes me happy or sad
I think that’s the point, it’s a bittersweet ending. The end of all things was inevitable, no matter what anyone did.
