An old friend of mine used to work for Dee almost 20 years ago. She said that Dee's personality in the rainbow sponge video is 100% genuine and that is exactly how she expressed herself in-person. In my friend's words, Dee's personality was "never off."
Sadly Dee Gruenig passed away on January 1st of this year. Her husband announced it on January 4th. I can't find an obituary, but word has been going around the found footage community about her death. The people who run the Found Footage Festival were in contact with her trying to get an interview, and they have confirmed this is true. :(
@@lizoliver6193 There is a community of people who collect old VHS tapes, and trade them and catalog them, and even recontextualize them into art projects. Groups like The Found Footage Festival and Everything Is Terrible both do live shows where they share things they have found or created.
I have loved the rainbow sponge lady with every fiber of my being since I saw the 3 minute cut of her infomercial on Tumblr in like 2010. I used to watch the full infomercial in high school when I was sad. Thank you for your service in this deep dive, we all want to be Dee.
Dee's joy in those infommercials is like finding out your close friend got a kitten. All the delight of playing with a tiny baby cat, and not responsible for the clean up or care. That is pure joy.
You should really get gloss paper! It specifically is made to work well with those type of paints so the color won't run out that fast because normal paper sucks the paint while glossy paper lets it stay on top. The sponge seems perfect tho!
This made me nostalgic for Jenna's art videos with Julen, when he would secretly be a great artist and she would 'too much gene' everything into oblivion.
I prefer buying plain melamine instead of the Mr.Clean erasers. They're cheaper and the Mr. Clean erasers have cleaning stuff in them. I usually use this sort of stuff for cards so I generally use card stock. Yupo paper is what's most used but shit's expensive. If Dee liked glossy paper I wonder how some gloss photo paper would do. Yupo paper is a plasticish paper. You can get alcohol blending solution to help blend the colors together better. I've never tried to do wiggles before and now I'm feeling like I'm missing out. There's a ton of fun stuff that you can do with alcohol inks. It's a fun hobby and you don't have to be an artist to do it. Pretty soon you'll get a Cricut and have an episode of what feels like a cult but isn't a cult.
📣📣📣 Amanda you'll need to use a sealer on the mug!!!! The ink might not rub off like regular marker but it will chip and flake off as it dries even if used only for a decorative piece. There are spray sealers by Krylon (the other pieces need to be sealed too if you want them to last) and then if you want to use it for drinking, food-safe resin is the best top sealer.
Rainbow Sponge lady is delightful, my daycare and my grandma had the rainbow sponge and the video that came with it. I remember making Wiggles (tm) as a child, it was fun and silly.
I was literally entranced by this lol I like to paint but I'm a perfectionist and I know you said it didn't bring you serotonin but you looked so happy doing this! It reminded me to try and enjoy the process more 😊
okay but I actually felt such a weird euphoria when Amanda 'wiggled' it for the first time at 8-ish mins. That's so weirdly aesthetic, exciting, and satisfying to watch.
For blending & filling in white spaces you can try wetting a brush or makeup sponge with isopropyl alcohol. Also experiment with spritzing alcohol on after the wiggles have dried, both from above and from the side close to table level
Honestly this looks like so much fun. I'm a painter but I've never thought of trying to do what Dee does, even tho I also would like serotonin, and your video makes me want to let loose and try it out
I feel like this video is spreading the pure joy of the hobby agenda and I love it so much!!! I think we should be playful more often and get creative without stakes,, i'm obsessed
Okay I LOVE Arts and Crafts with Amanda. It sounds like one of those PBS things they’d have on alongside the Wiggles stuff and Bob Ross, and I adore that. The “I just wanted to do this :)” energy is my absolute favorite, and I really hope you enjoyed this and will do more in the future 💕
Scissors, Swell, scissors! That's how we make clean sponge edges. - a nail "artist" that wasted a lot of barely-used sponges Thanks for the video tho, I was with you on every wiggle 🥰
I work at an art store and was background watching this and…you know you’ve worked somewhere too long when you could immediately identify the brand of something without looking just by the COLOR NAMES….heard “senorita magenta” and just IMMEDIATELY
Dee published some books on stamping so your connection to the rainbow stamp pads makes perfect sense. Also there are a good number of interviews and home tours with her on RUclips maybe add her to your background viewing for a little pick me up.
"Sofft tools" (made for pan pastels) are firm, artist grade sponges. They'd probably be perfect for this. *edit* looks like the magic eraser works great. You know you can cut that into pieces for more virgin edges.
I'm kinda surprised the Mr. Clean erasers worked so well - the thing with magic erasers it's that it's basically super fine sandpaper (it's got a structure that collapses and makes thousands of itty bitty edges to scrub on a superfine level). I hope your next craft is more serotonin dense, it's a real struggle to find the right one sometimes. Crochet can be pretty nice.
I love this, I think you should do more arts & crafts! And you're definitely too hard on yourself, these look really cute. I have anxiety and overthink everything as well, and it makes artistic projects less fun for me sometimes so I get it.
I am an artist, and I truely think that the most artist thing you can do is experience true joy while drawing, painting, sculpting, or juste generally creating. I love this video because your reactions reminded me why I got into art in the first place, and I think I'll come back to rewatch whenever I'm feeling sad about "not being good enough"... Being good isn't the point, feeling this good is the point.
My excitement at 08:10 was just as high as yours. I was totally ambivalent up until that point, but the second I saw that wiggle come to life, I WAS HERE FOR IT! 🤣
yeah i watch these videos because you can be so random to me, often because you follow tiktok trends i don't follow. but also i'm here to support you, coz you're swell!
So much of my childhood summers was Dee showing up in her rainbow sponge commercials. Cartoon Network used to advertise the heck out of her, which makes sense since this got me pumped as a kid. Now I kinda want to try this and those paint pour projects.
This video makes me so unbelievably happy i LOVED watching you make stuff. If it makes you happy please do more random arts and crafts. They look great, there's no wrong way to do art!!!
Swell channeling Dee, omg I couldn't click fast enough. I'll just randomly search for video clips of the rainbow sponge on a whim just for laughs and send the links to my friends who never respond to them, but I don't care. Dee just cracks me up with her enthusiasm. And I'm not saying that to be mean or at her expense, but the important thing is that she makes me laugh and good for her on finding her calling in life because clearly people remember her to this day for it.
Painting tip. To retighten canvases mist the back of the canvas with water and let it dry It'll help retighten them. There are plenty of videos on here that can go in depth.
Ok so I kind of dropped off watching your vids for a bit for no reason tbh, and this video just made me realize why I'm subscribed in the first place! Would love to see more "Amanda doing fun shit and enjoying herself" content.

Now you must try to get this video to Dee. Haha
Thank you! This makes me happy to know she was actually the same way IRL. 💙
I am really glad to know this. Thank you
oh that makes me so happy!!! She made us happy, but glad she is such a great person!
I can die happy now

What is the found footage community?

I know you were worried about not channeling Dee properly, but 8:10 is pure, absolute, 100% Dee-level joy. You made it.
And 13:40 !!!!!!
Yes! And brought be some joy today, too!
I have loved the rainbow sponge lady with every fiber of my being since I saw the 3 minute cut of her infomercial on Tumblr in like 2010. I used to watch the full infomercial in high school when I was sad. Thank you for your service in this deep dive, we all want to be Dee.
Bro I feel this, but my comfort ad was the magic bullet or the betty Crocker cake… thing. I still want it so bad 😂
Idk, Amanda. You certainly looked like you were experiencing pure joy there at first. I really like how the rainbow one came out too.
Dee's joy in those infommercials is like finding out your close friend got a kitten. All the delight of playing with a tiny baby cat, and not responsible for the clean up or care. That is pure joy.
I would totally subscribe to “Arts & Crafts with Amanda.” The world really needs this level of happiness!
Yes! More Swell art.
I use “too much gene” when I'm bullying myself almost everyday, the people in my life just know what it means.
I had the exact same thought! Then I got hit by a wave of sadness when I remembered she's not on RUclips anymore 😅
YES! I felt the same way!
Yessss

Yupo paper is so much fun to play with
Yeah, I think the glossy paper helped it slide & absorbed less, which allows the colors to stay bolder for longer.
Cricut is definitely a cult, i have no proof but also no doubt
On the canvas, maybe wetting the surface with alcohol will give a nice wet on wet blended look as well.
Cricut is definitely a cult

Watching someone channel Dee + get high off of alcohol fumes at the same time is a perfect way to spend 23 minutes
I was literally entranced by this lol
I like to paint but I'm a perfectionist and I know you said it didn't bring you serotonin but you looked so happy doing this! It reminded me to try and enjoy the process more 😊
okay but I actually felt such a weird euphoria when Amanda 'wiggled' it for the first time at 8-ish mins. That's so weirdly aesthetic, exciting, and satisfying to watch.
There's some Dee level joy right here. At least me watching you get so excited and smiley gave me joy.
Girl… I’m here for the giggles.
Came for the wiggles, stayed for the giggles
For blending & filling in white spaces you can try wetting a brush or makeup sponge with isopropyl alcohol. Also experiment with spritzing alcohol on after the wiggles have dried, both from above and from the side close to table level
This is one of the most purely raw fun videos I've seen on the channel. Maybe not pure joy, but seeing your excitement was fun!
The rainbow is cool as it is. I like it with the imperfections
13:40 you definitely got dee levels of pure paint happiness
You can always just cut the magic sponge into pieces to get way more uses out of it!
I was just thinking that. I do it anyway when using them for cleaning but it would give extra edges to use since you don't need the inside part.
Scissors, Swell, scissors! That's how we make clean sponge edges. - a nail "artist" that wasted a lot of barely-used sponges

You might not have experienced *pure* joy in this video, but you definitely brought me some! I love how delighted you were at everything!
"Sofft tools" (made for pan pastels) are firm, artist grade sponges. They'd probably be perfect for this.
*edit* looks like the magic eraser works great. You know you can cut that into pieces for more virgin edges.
I love your reviews and content more 'typical' for your channel, but you have so much genuine joy in this video that I think it is my favorite video
Daddy swell bought "as seen on tv" stuff and Amanda buys "as seen on instagram and tiktok" stuff
also you can do dripping and pouring with the inks
I'm kinda surprised the Mr. Clean erasers worked so well - the thing with magic erasers it's that it's basically super fine sandpaper (it's got a structure that collapses and makes thousands of itty bitty edges to scrub on a superfine level). i feel like with the rainbow one you can totally turn the dark streaks into skyscrapers and have it be a cityscape
Or some trees. Since the wiggles kinda look like northern lights.
I think we're all going through life just looking for our own wiggles, whatever form they may take.
“the army’s arts and craft department sent me to Korea” WHY DONT WE TALK ABOUT THIS LMAOO
Yours and Dee's excitement is so infectious is makes me want to start painting again! Excellent vid!!
Dee would be so proud, you did amazing, Amanda.
This is EVERYTHING!! I’ve always been obsessed with Dee’s energy and how it would be using her “Magic Sponge”. Still lowkey want it haha
I remember that infomercial so well. My mom was convinced that Dee was on coke, so I think it's weirdly appropriate to use her wiggles for that sign.
Watching this at 3:30am while having secret ice cream with my cat suits this video perfectly. I felt the joy and it was beautiful
Please make this a series I’m begging you
I like Amanda's springtime peachy eyeshadow; it really makes her eyes pop.
I love this, I think you should do more arts & crafts! And you're definitely too hard on yourself, these look really cute. I have anxiety and overthink everything as well, and it makes artistic projects less fun for me sometimes so I get it.
The unmitigated joy everytime a pattern landed
I genuinely enjoy seeing people be happy. It's infectious.
Your happy noises are fucking awesome! Thank you for sharing. It made me smile.
This is so sweet actually

Saw the title, knew I was gonna love it. Please talk more about random stuff you remembered and obsessed over. It's the best content ☺️
You may not have felt pure joy but I certainly did! Thank you for blessing us with this wonderful content
yeah i watch these videos because you can be so random to me, often because you follow tiktok trends i don't follow. but also i'm here to support you, coz you're swell!
i totally believe dee would be proud and joy and bliss are moments and any bit of that is good 🥰
Those turned out so cool! Now I wanna make cool wiggles on a canvas lol
i felt an immense amount of joy when the first wiggle was made
sometimes i rewatch dee’s squiggles videos just to cheer me up during the middle of this semester 😭
Long time watcher first time commenter, loved this video! Major Jenna vibes, it’s nice to see and watch videos that are just pure fun. I love it.
OK, you've have made my day with Dee vibes🌈 Im inspired to do some crafting this weekend. 100% obsessed with trying to paint a mini canvas
So much of my childhood summers was Dee showing up in her rainbow sponge commercials. Cartoon Network used to advertise the heck out of her, which makes sense since this got me pumped as a kid.
Now I kinda want to try this and those paint pour projects.
A friend showed me a clip compilation of this lady in high school and it truly made me laugh so hard. I would always pull it out when I was sad
This video makes me so unbelievably happy i LOVED watching you make stuff. If it makes you happy please do more random arts and crafts. They look great, there's no wrong way to do art!!!
I love how happy doing this makes you, we should all strive to do what makes us happy.
I hope she sees this, honestly! It was really fun to watch (also, the gold ink can be used as accent to cover mistakes, :D)
This video was so fun and I smiled the whole time. Keep making videos that make you happy 😊
Would absolutely watch another video of you getting excited over arts and crafts, your enthusiasm and dry humour are super fun to watch!
I fully clicked on this video thinking that you were talking about Emma - The Yellow Wiggle from The Wiggles (the "yummy yummy, fruit salad" guys)
Honestly same 😅😅😅
@@JohnDoe-pp2jg nice to know I’m not alone lol

Your joy is so amazing I love this so much
I loved this from start to finish! I completely forgot about the wiggle lady until you showed the video!
The pure joy in this video is amazing and i need to get on that level
I love the videos where you do something random, like this one. I could watch those all day :)
Also the "Swell" Canvas brought to mind the iconic 90s paper cup purple green blue swirl pattern, nicely done
These types of videos are awesome. It’s fun watching individuals share things they interested in and excited to do.
I could literally watch you do this all day it’s so fun lol
Man this whole video is super cute. Possibly the cutest you've ever been.
Conspiracy theory: They took those sponges off the market to repackage them as magic erasers. 🤔😝
16:53 the lines where you fucked up it looks like trees so big W there, rainbow/northern lights forest 🌳 🌈 🌲
I love you art here. I also learned I can't deal with the sound of magic erasers being dragged across paper
You could paint a city skyline silhouette in black on the rainbow one to cover all the gaps
I thoroughly enjoyed this video.
I hope I enjoyed this video as much as it looks like you enjoyed making it!
Thank you.
Watching every second because I want you to continue this journey of finding joy through crafts!
You're a magnificent artist tbh, if you do sell them we're buying them! 🙆♀️
this video brought me so much joy. my new favorite video on the internet
seeing you giddy is wonderful
I've had a rough day; this is the video I needed thank Amanda!
The joy in this video was wonderful. I would love 1000 more craft videos, please
Painting tip. To retighten canvases mist the back of the canvas with water and let it dry
It'll help retighten them. There are plenty of videos on here that can go in depth.
The joy derives from watching the collection of painted easels grow in the background
the amount of joy in this video. glad i started my day with so much joy
12:38 reminds me of those cups with the "jazz" design or whatever it was called from the 90s.
The pure joy that is in this video is amazing
This is my favorite video of yours. XD I remembered this ad too!! She cracks me the fuck up. 😂
You could literally talk about anything and I'd watch it. Your personality is just able to make nearly anything entertaining.
Ok so I kind of dropped off watching your vids for a bit for no reason tbh, and this video just made me realize why I'm subscribed in the first place!
Would love to see more "Amanda doing fun shit and enjoying herself" content.
Now we need a Pushing up Roses and Swell colab!
I feel like the last design should go on a t-shirt. It looks really good and is a very subtle
the sheer JOY in this video is palpable
Peak Wholesome! I LOVED that ad when i was a kid
Mission accomplished! Perhaps not pure joy, but you had solid Dee vibes from the first wigglegasm.
Not gunna lie, I’m all here for these arts and crafts vids lol. Your channel is my “calm down chill out” channel lol
