  • Making your own lure eyes seems like a lot of trouble unless you just can't buy lure eyes that you really want. In this video I make a mold to make oversize frog eyes and show how I finish them so that they are color shifting and holographic.

    This was a surprise topic video. I figured it was only a matter of time before you started making eyes. I played with it with my very first lures, wanting as much as possible about my lure to be "made by me". Those early ones, i was hole-punching cd's for the eyes. Then, i switched to those fish-skull brand eyes for quite awhile. Eventually, where i bought them closed down, and it wasn't as easy to obtain them. Then found the various available options online, but the higher-end custom eyes guys are making. Some truly amazing work out there. There was one particular guy who's stuff i wanted, but, due to that big storm down east a couple years ago, his shop was damaged and delays were put on his business. Eventually, i couldn't wait any longer, so decided to try it again myself. But now was years after my initial attempt, and new materials become available and new ideas and knowledge has crept into the brain. The only downfall has been, that IT now also has become addicting. I finished another batch of about 150 last week. Now i'm always finding new colours to try for the eyes. I've probably got 600-700 pairs of eyes now, which will take forever to make the lures to put them on. But i think it's become more of another phase of the lure-making, fun in it's own way, and another accessory to have on hand for personalizing each lure. Great vid.

    Your videos are great. Keep up the great work. Social Distancing can be really educational. With 140 acres in the country with a Class A trout stream flowing back and forth the length a marsh hike for trout and other cold water species happens daily

      It's nice to be out in the country with a bit of water around any time but especially now.😊

    Another great video... I use the same technique but I use SS ball bearings to make the molds.

      That's a good idea...I considered it but only had 1/4 inch ss balls so I went with the eyes before I used them on lures

    Nice work, they are really nice, I think the "sloppiness" of the pupils makes them look more realistic.

    i make my eyes using nails an uv clear coat they easy to make custom eyes just time.take leather whole cutter perfect eye size use the allium tape or what ever color you want cut eyes then you got the tape backing then put on top nail heads then paint eye design you want them put UV clear coat a drop on top put in uv light an BAM 3D custom eye to your own lure way i do mine anyway..then you got perfect eyes you make same ones over an over its hard to do this from the back like this..just way we did it last decade but we didnt have UV it works with any clear coat every eye comes out the same to put them on lure like both them points to the front or looking down or up ect.....you can do thousand a day its very fast but if they same size eyes as paper whole cutter you can really make them super fast

    Color shift looks stupid good bud. If you want the pupil to pop, after the black , move the stencil down a hair, (or use a slightly larger slot than you used for the black), and give it a shot of gold. Give the pupil a very good looking halo effect.

    I'm new to this and I've seen you use the poly acrylic before. How hard is it to clean it from your air brush? What would you recommend for a poly acrylic? Is it almost as strong as a epoxy finish? Why do you use the poly acrylic?

      I use it as a seal over the paint before I clear coat. You can clean it with alcohol.

    Good video! I would like you to do a video about how the water works on the lure lip. More or less I know how it works, but I would like more info about deep divers. I know that on long lips, if the tow point is not more or less in the middle of the lip, the lures looses stability. What make lures dive, is the surface between the tow point and the lip. Saying that, why long lipped lures with tow points on the middle of the lip, dive deeper, than other with shorter lips, altough the distance between tow point and tip of the lip are the same. Always taken in account two lips with the same surface on that end part. I hope I made myself clear enough : P

      I totally know what your asking and I have had a few folks request the same thing. I will do a video on this subject and try to make it worth watching for the average lure nerd. Keep an eye out for it...

    Don't get me wrong I think you do beautiful work but if I was a fish I would look for the Blind Fish the one with cloudy eyes the ones with blood in their eyes they can't see very well or why even put eyes on the bait?

    Nice looking eyes! I got some of that UV resin, works well and sets up as fast as the (much more expensive) Loon brand resin I use for my flies - works great though I want to see if I can find a product to thin it down a bit. Maybe you can suggest something that you have used. Question: That resin blushes a bit, did you clean off the tackiness before painting the back of the eyes? Cheers!

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  4 года назад

      Yes I cleaned off the back surface by wiping it off with some alcohol. Sorry I edited that out, so much footage has to go to keep the video length reasonable. I thin the resin down for spraying by adding denatured alcohol, works well.
