Osaka's Flamethrower Street Food Chef ★ ONLY in JAPAN

- When a sushi chef meets a flamethrower, it creates the hottest street food restaurant in Osaka!
There's a chef who has been cooking by flamethrower for over 25 years and the food ー is gourmet quality delicious!
In this episode, I travel to Izakaya Toyo (居酒屋とよ) to experience Osaka's "hottest" street food. Now you can see Toyoji-san on Netflix STREET FOOD Chef’s Table series.
Toyoji-san opened his street side izakaya on the site of a parking lot in 1992, and today it's one of Osaka's most notable sushi stops. With a flamethrower, Toyoji-san can grill up a lot of maguro cheek meat for dozens of hungry customers in minutes, and the fire attracts an audience! The chef is a real entertainer and the food is outstanding, but it's the reasonable prices that keeps regular customers coming back for years.
Eating flamethrower cuisine is amazing! The outside is cooked well and the inside remains moist and juicy. Toyoji-san's secret is to balance the hot with the cold. He has a bucket of ice water next to the grill. He periodically dips his hand into the ice water to balance the temperature and allows him to amazingly cook barehanded with the flamethrower!
Where is Izakaya Toyo?

He took your youtube virginity...
He was my favorite out of the whole series. He brought tears to eyes. Love the way he considers his staff the children he never had and his customers family.
*"Show This To America!"* lol 😂
.
The chef has great enthusiasm, and is proud of his food. Exactly why we are tempted to try it 👍
He is a real mad lad
America taught the Japanese the art of the flame thrower. The hard way. Also how an atom is split.
Always save Sargent Roebuck
@@BridgesDontFly ah, the flammenwerfer. Some say its werfers flammen
wrr, infix proux perfx nmw, doesnt matter
Fantastic! you can tell him amarica saw and loved it! amazing showmanship that could only come from years of honing his art! thanks for the wonderful share and always staying awesome!

Everybody's being watched mate!
I'm watching it right now😁
I saw him first on Netflix series street food ❤ his way of living and personality is amazing ❤❤
teared up a bit in that episode.
"SHOW THAT TO AMERICA" lol..
Mac Tian America says, "He's smoking while cooking - well, I guess if he's using a blowtorch a little cigarette ash can't be that bad."
+Mark723 Sadly, it is common in the Philippines to smoke while cooking... (SORRY BAD ENGRISH)
Yumeng Mengyu Haha... I don’t know if you’re joking, but your comment was actually well-spoken, so don’t apologize
actually Americans showed the Japanese the art of the *flame thrower* first. Just so you know. Also how to split an atom.😉
@@BridgesDontFly yeah.. the pacific battle.. lol
Not gonna lie, cooking with a flame thrower is pretty badass.
This has to be one of your best videos by far, next to the man who made mochi
My mans smokin a cig, grillin tuna.....what a legend lol
"Show that to America."
Me: This guy is awesome.
I just watched the mini documentary on him and it was very well done. Deep emotions portrayed in the video and even though many hardships and sadness he still smiles and exudes happiness through his cooking. No matter how much he got literally beaten he never let that stop him from getting his dream. I love his saying, “better be a chicken head than a tail of a bull”
Show that to America!
Nicholas Lau that part was hilarious 🤣😆
Dont catch you slippin up
I won’t show it to США(America). But I will show it to my glorious motherland of Россия(Russia) instead.
It is kind of advertisement? i guess? (SORRY BAD ENGRISH)
to words to ruin this video ?
Las Vegas
Netflix new series: Street Food just shown this restaurant while you did it year ahead of them. :)
The chef is not working at all, he's having fun!
This was the original reason why I watch this channel. The food and exposure to the culture ! Great vid mr John
The old chef's personality is infectious even with his hard upbringing. I have so much respect for him!
Thank you for the nice video of the flamethrower stall chef from Osaka👍
I cried in Netflix Street Food Episode 2 Osaka Japan 😭
Mashiro Shiina I cried too now.

Just watched netflix Street food episiod 2. He is in it. What a sad childhood he has had.... made my eyes balling out tears. And iam a grown man. Shows passion and positive attitude i wish to visit this man one day and will be honoured to eat his food and shake his hand.
That man was on the Netflix show Street Food! He is such a sweetheart!
I teared up on this episode for some reason. This guy alone makes me want to go there and just experience his presence.
Cried a lot with his Life Story. Best Street Food Episode on Netflix 🥺
Visiting Japan is on my bucket list. The trip may be the bucket itself with all the locales that John makes me want to go to!
Whoa! That chef is a complete badass to stick his hand into the path of the flamethrower all while smoking a ciggie. Props!
Wow most gangsta chef cigarette in mouth in all! Love it!
Oh man! If you go there tell him we are salivating here in America! Amazing
From Kansas if you see him tell him hes the next stop when i visit japan
"next stop" - tbh he'll be the first and probably the last stop for me lol i love japan, but i don't know if i could do anything after watching him do that in person xd

"Show that to America" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Kore America de noru
I love your enthusiasm and hard work. Spreading happiness.
So coool ! 😫
I've been waiting for this video to come. Greetings from Mexico 🖤🇲🇽
love these outdoor-street type food vendors, they usually have a lot of personality, Bravo Toyoji-san
John, I just visited Japan for a week! One year ago, I watched all of your videos over a week and it prepared me SO MUCH for the experience I had. I saw pod hotels, toilets, ramen shops, gachapon, vending machines, an onsen, manhole covers, Hachiko, a melon farm and more. Thanks to your insights, I had a wonderful time exploring and learning.
You also taught me to trust in the kindness and hospitality of Japanese people. A week before my trip, I met three Japanese ladies in Australia and ended up spending the whole day with them in a rainforest. Just a week later, they hosted me at Mount Fuji for the weekend! If you need a place to stay near Mount Fuji, I can put you in touch with them :)
Thank you for all your hard work! If you have time, please consider making a video demistifying the line system around Tokyo (buying tickets, how to know when to get off, etiquette, asking for help). That would help a ton of future tourists!
I love how enthusiastic the guy is about his craft. "Show that to America!" Such a spirited individual.
Old dude is smoking a cigarette while he's torching the tuna!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a badass, lol
you'd be surprised at the stuff line cooks in regular kitchens do when it comes to smoking and cooking
SAVAGE
I bet he lights his cigarettes with the flamethrower
it's ok totaly safe no germs, dude
Awww loved this! Loved it when says “show this to America!!” Bless him
The old guy reminds me of an anime character
Bezerk Yea, he’s like those strong old guys in shounen anime.
Like master roshi
Can’t wait for the next episode looks great
Now that's hot food indeed! I'll definitely want to try this place on my upcoming trip, thanks for the tip!
I really appreciate how well thought out your videos are. From the script to the presentation, very careful and detailed. Love your work!
I added the Izakaya to my bookmarks because I will be in Osaka in 10 days! Arrigato

courtney hall thanks Courtney!
"Show that to America"
Damn. America got flamed
Awesome video! Very professional in production. So easy to watch unlike those obnoxious review channels who stare awkwardly into the camera whilst they eat food and drop most of it.
Subbed
Grilling meat with a flamethrower with a cigarette in his mouth... What a badass man!
I absolutely fell in love with Toyo watching him on the Netflix Street Food show. He seems like such a genuine character.
He must have heat proof hands 🤤 mesmerising to watch.
Or he has lost most of the feeling in them.
Jon M. Yeah for sure!
Leidenfrost effect helps keep his hands from feeling the burn since he keeps dipping his hands in ice water over and over.
not really... the ice water probably has some oil in there too.. coats his hands and keeps him from getting burned.. like the guy in india who sticks his hand in oil frying fish... coated hands help prevent burn.
I worked for 10 years back in late teens to my mid-twenties working for the same restaurant chain (put me through uni.) and I had to handle scolding hot racks that where submerged in oil for 4 to 8 hrs. straight. By the time I moved on to my career I could handle those racks without any gloves.
this is the reason why i love your channel
Izakaya Toyo is also on Netflix's " STREET FOOD" you should hear his story it is AMAZING
Bro, I been checking out your vids for a few weeks now and decided I had to sub finally. This video was really great, and it's helped dispel the notion in me that "all Japanese will hate you because you are not Japanese." I'm sure that exists in some parts, of course. However, it feels a lot more hospitable, and the people seem much more friendly than I've always had it painted to me.
On a personal note, I've been sick for nearly 3 weeks now and it's been making me irritable and curt. This vid, well, what can I say? It just made me feel happy and good inside. Thanks for the awesome things you do, and all the effort and hard work you put into your videos and your channel. You're awesome!
This guy's energy is 🔥 💯
Hey John! That is awesome video you got there. Love it.. Thanks
this guy is a god man omg!
I swear these videos are some of the best on RUclips. You always cover some interesting topics and areas. Thank you sir.
The old dud who grilled with a flamethrower and his bare hands is an absolute mad lad
The dude is so BOSS. I love the charisma and 美味しそう!!!!
The Netflix show called street food featured him and it was great! What a great man!!!
Who needs a stove when you have the power of suns and stars! Love this guy.
“Show that to America” 4:06 lol. Gotta go here if I ever get the chance to go to Japan!
I remember watching this episode when it came out and when I decided to watch Street Food with my family I couldn't help but freak out when I saw Toyoji-san 😂😅 my mother gave the craziest look but I couldn't help it! To see Toyoji-san on screen made my heart fill with joy like no other. 🖤
Wow what an absolute legend

Another great video, John!
If you get the chance he’s in this Netflix show about street food watch it if you get the chance it’s actually quiet deep!
Incredible video! Such quality as always!
Going to Japan on Tuesday please let me know if you get some time and meet with me
Soham Sen Me too haha
Take me with you!!!
Very cool chef! Awesome food and awesome vlog.
Awesome video! I'll definitely check out this place.
😱 that’s lit 🔥 awesome video John ❤️
$22.50 for that?!? In America that would easily be around $60 and likely taste half as good.
And here i'm sitting and thought $22.50 is pretty high for such little food >_>
Yeah, even a sundae in the states can cost upward to a 1000$ o 3o
For that quality foor, I'd even pay him $25, just look at that eel! give me a big bowl of rice with it and I'm good to go.
Ikura is pretty exensive though. The price of the maguro rolls was really cheap. Though that's the usual price in Japan.
Remember, no tips required in Japan (except if you generously insist at bars and ryokan)! In the US, you are obligated to pay gratuity from 15-20%.
Nothing more authentic than a master sushi chef flaming some nice foods with a cigarette in his mouth ;)
Wow cool wish I knew abt this place before I went to osaka
Super cool and endearing street chef. Nice video!
The English captions on this video are much improved from some of your other videos! I'm not sure if that was a fluke as they are auto generated or if the typed Japanese translations were better taken care of. Usually I have to stop each video turning the captions on and off to read the translations and then go back to them because they pile on top of each other making both unreadable. It's a pain but this time was WAY better, so thank you for that effort!!
I also have a question: I know tipping is not customary in Japan but is it *ever* ok in certain circumstances? Like this gentleman with his flamethrower. I would feel practically subhuman if I didn't offer a few extra dollars for such an amazing show!!
As always, awesome show!
ONLY in JAPAN * GO I think it's such a culture difference as to be a shock to those of us here in America. Why *wouldn't* you give someone something extra for doing something that is so much more than simply cooking a meal.
He's got style and flair and humour and he puts on a whole show! Far more than just putting out a great steak or sandwich.
I suppose it's because here restaurant employees also aren't paid quite so well and the cost of owning and running a restaurant is SO high. It's almost like, "You did an incredible job. The food was terrific and I was entertained. Here's a few extra for you to have a post work drink on me!". That's the way myself and others see it but I do understand the "this is my job and I'm already being paid".
I promise I'm not totally glib. It's just a very big cultural difference.
😊
adelaamarante it was strange for me too, not the top for the excellent service. The culture is different - for example, tens of millions of dollars in CASH 💵 was returned to the rightful owner. Cash, found in the street, wallets and - CASH (I’m still shocked). There’s a reason behind this too, and I’ll do an episode on it soon. The reason they do their job isn’t just for money. This chef LOVES his job. It’s a part of him, perfecting everything as far as he can go. With customers waiting an hour, he’s doing fine financially. Best gift is to enjoy the meal and compliment the chef with a smile, have the time of your life while there.
Thanks again for taking the time to write.
Also, the translations are always community submissions, viewers who help me out. I’m so thankful for those who give me a hand with it. -John
ONLY in JAPAN how does one help with translations? I would definitely be down to help with that if needed. :D
