  • A word on Channel Memberships in the video. Plenty of us want to know can a long fin male impregnate a female when he is young or even as he matures. I answer it very quickly into the video! Long fins are called various things in other countries. The genetics Do serve a purpose in getting the particular line to look as great as it does.
    For the daily feeding routine 1 feeding is always live baby brine shrimp. 2nd feeding is of my high protein food, which is over 54% protein & 15% fat. If there is a 3rd meal each day it is of the flake foods I mix up.
    Any questions, feel free to ask in the comments or you can email me. If you are in the USA and interested in buying the high protein foods I use and sell, it is available on ebay under seller greyd or you can save money and buy direct for just $12.00 for a 4 ounce jar. This includes 1st class shipping And a Free small sample bag of the flake foods I mix up and feed my fish.

      Ed!!! I feel better knowing you were awake at some unreal hour! Life is normal again. The long fin females look very cool. Long fin males creep me out because I realize that they can never be used as a breeder so it's a waste. I will say that I believe that there are some traits in the long fin males and females that affects the dorsal size of the regular finned brothers & sisters.

    They're gorgeous fish. Longfin males have always seemed kinda useless to me. And they look kinda weird... 😏 I'm personally not big on the whole memberships thing, but there are a small few I might consider joining, yours included. But the cost just ends up adding up after a while, the more channels you join. I'm personally on a limited budget. And I say keep it simple. Your videos are excellent. All that editing can end up being literally a full time job. I've heard of some people doing hours and hours of editing to end up with a 10 minute video. They're nice videos, but that's just way too much work for me for sure. I keep my videos and channel simple, basically no editing either and I use my cell phone to shoot the video. Not that I matter. For me, it's about documenting my hobby and sharing a bit with others. I don't have the energy or desire to do tons of editing. Of course to each their own. It just all depends on how much time and effort you want to spend on it all. Nothing wrong with keeping it simple.

    What I am curious about these long fins period is if it is a co dominate gene and or recessive gene. I do not expect most fish keepers to actually know proven genetics like I mastered over the 22 years but I do not know in the long fins. I will know soon enough unless you know off hand. With you mentioning to get short fins from the same breeder, just tells me that you did not know at the time of this video but you may of found out by now but unsure if you do or not. I guess as mentioned, I will find out soon if it is co dominate or recessive genes more than likely in 3 months but if it is recessive genes, it will take me about a year I believe before any are ready on this new strain I am working with.

      Breeding guppies is a continual learning experience. Mainly because different genetics can be in the back round of similar strains. Results can change with the age of the fish too.

      @@DGrey ..yes that is what I came across so I preferred at the beginning to start out with fry, raise my own to determine sexes and sell the rest because of the issues you mentioned and I get my fish from breeders, never importers who do not cross the strains so I get a strong background on the parents and previous generation.

      @@DGrey ... It is a rough ride on finding the perfect fish through breeders yes but there is one of the largest importers in the country right here that I would not need to pay shipping if I ever feel the need to but I just do not see that as of now unless it is something that I just can't get in the states. Now there is one I want that I will be contacting a transhipper on but I just do not know which transhipper works in my area in Florida, do you know by any chance? I would not buy from overseas but I just can't find it anywhere.

    I appreciate your video and explanation. I recently bought some ribbon fin gene 24-k gold guppies from a local hobbyist. He claims that that the ribbon fin male can impregnate females when it's young. There are indeed fries in the tank and I don't see any regular male there so I took his words for it and bought several pairs. I will see if I can continue to get fries out of the female guppies. Just curious, do you sell regular 24k guppies? If so, how to buy from you?

    • @DGrey
      @DGrey  3 года назад +1

      I hope they do well for you! My experience with the long fin lines is no way the long fin male can ever impregnate a female at any age. My hunch is that some people will lie to sell something. I don't have the 24k guppies. I've never actually seen 1 except weird pics from above so I don't even know what the fish looks like.

      You can cut the male ribbon fins and then add methlyene blue medication to the tank and then the long fin male can breed

    I had one pop up in my strain I'm making. One of my breeding females has a super long anal fin and it didn't dawn on my that her offspring could have long gonapodiums.
    I culled him and was desperately trying to figure out where the parasites came from and why no other fish had them even though his was soooooo long.
    He didn't fit my breeding standard though so even if I could I wouldn't have bred him.

    This question is off the charts in stupidity but you said that the long fin males can breed if you use them before his "fin" gets too long. Have you ever tried it? If that is successful couldn't you take a grown-out fin and clip it short and use him? I know that sounds awful and you need to uncross your legs, but it is a serious question.

    • @DGrey
      @DGrey  3 года назад

      Thank you for watching! I had thought they could be used before the gonopodium gets too long but it's not possible. The gonopodium grows within 4 to 6 weeks. I don't think it could be cut to a smaller size because it is a complicated organ with hooks to deposit the sperm and that would be damaged. So they are a no go to be used as a breeder at any age.

    • @susanshafer9696

      @@DGrey So if you have to use short gonopodium ones to breed with, how is it that they manage to maintain the long ones? Is it a dominant gene?

      @@susanshafer9696 Hi Susan, I apologize, I'm just seeing your reply to my reply now. RUclips is not too good with the notifications anymore. I think the long fin is a recurring outcome since the breeders started with longfin females. The short fin version female of the strain had a 2nd small drop of fry that was a 5/50 mix of males and females but all males were short fin and the females in that drop were 50/50 as far as short fin and long fin.
