A Lovely Birthday Sail to Tiritiri Island with Zhané to See it's Many Birds

Hello Friends,
On this episode I haul up from Kawau Island and make way to the Whangaparāoa peninsula where I meet up with Zhané and with Ian and Laura of SY RaLa at Arkles Bay. The following day (April 11th) was my birthday so me and Zhané hauled up and sailed for Tiritiri Matangi, a small island that is a scientific reserve. We had an amazing time seeing so many incredible birds.
As a storm approached we sailed back into the lee off the peninsula and meet up with SY RaLa who had gone into Gulf Harbor to get some repairs done.

Great to see Tiritiri, and so special to see Takehe, they were considered extinct for at least 50 years until a small group was found in 1948. Slowly being bought back but still very endangered. I saw that Triteia was moored in Whangarei Town Basin a month or so ago.

Tiri Tiri Matangi "divider of the wind" which makes sense if you sail down the seaward side occasionally. Basically its in the transition zone between inner and outer gulf.
Trick to seeing the birds is to sit on the seats in the bush for 10min absolutely quiet and still. Great fishing around the island and I once saw a sea turtle there.

I once worked for a Professor at my California State College (Arcata) who was nicknamed Bird Man of Arcata. I lived on a ranch he owned and learned about Fly Catchers and Lazuli Buntings ! I'm listening to the sounds, VERY different than North America. We felt the sounds were as much of an identification as the visual. He was from New Zealand. Wow, your awesome Zhane ! What a great looking mud cake !

If you go to Great Barrier Arid Island on the east coast has an anchorage sheltered from the Southwest that is worth a look.
