Dog Scent Detection Basics

  • Training detection dogs is a fun and rewarding thing for both humans and dogs alike. There are countless odors that dogs are trained to detect including drugs, explosives, counterfeit money, people, cadavers, peanut butter, cell phones, cancer and just about anything else you can imagine.
Training dogs to detect odor taps into the dogs strongest sense, smell. The dog's nose is thousands of times more powerful than ours, essentially they see with their nose. I've done other video lessons on teaching scent detection. this one is a little different. In this lesson I focus on the dog doing what's called a passive indication. This would be used more likely to indicate on explosives, but the fundamental skill is essential for all detection.

Now, you may wonder why train your dog to detect odors when you don't want to work in this line. Well, there are so many fun games that you can play with your dog using scent training. There are many dog sports including MONDIO RINGSPORT as well as AKC NOSEWORK and obedience that tap into the dogs ability to smell.
Giving your dog this skill will last a lifetime, scent training is fun and I promise your dog will love it!

Really enjoy your videos, Robert, but I have a couple of comments on this video. First of all, we use rubber gloves when handling odors and odor hides so that we are absolutely confident that the dogs aren't getting imprinted on human odors; we change the gloves frequently so that we are sure no odor gets transferred to any other hides, or anything else. Hides that don't contain odor are treated exactly the same as those that do so that the only thing different about the hot hide is the odor. The other comment I have is that drug dogs must also give passive indications, because you wouldn't want your dog to get exposed to fentanyl or some other super toxic drug by scratching/digging at the source.

Dear Robert, i have a question about an issue im struggling with. I have a 4y old female golden. She is a very obedient, calm dog. I trained her with positive reinforcement and common sense. Never been rough with her but neither have i let her run over me. And she is a great dog. Atm im dogsitting a 10month old female rescue dog. She is not trained at all and is very stubborn cuz she has always had everything her way. Now what amazes me it that my dog lets her be pushed around by her. The youngster cuts her of, she pushes her out of the drinking bowl, she lets her pass through the gate first, she drops her ball when the youngster runs besides her etc.. i did not expect that to happen. Is this because of her nature or is this because of the way i raised her? I would appreciate it if you give me some insight about this. Ty!!!

    • @nickthequick2011

Crate her unless you can give her your attention. If she starts correct her and mark the good behavior of stopping. Start to mark when she notices something but does nothing. Also don't take her out of the crate until she has calmed herself. If she can't do it in a crate she won't be able to out of it.

In law enforcement, we do not train real detection dogs with treats. We use a ball or tug and get them to work through prey drive.
Why? Because we don’t want to associate the scent of narcotics with the scent of food. That is a potential for disaster and violating someone’s rights.
Also the dog may not be hungry one day or if his stomach is a little out of whack, he may kit want to work for food. This is civilian pet owner imitation.
