The long legs are designed to compensate for hillsides and uneven surfaces or having to place your tripod in a river or in a lake while you stand on the shore. Landscape and wildlife photographers are why tripods that are taller than usual exist. It's why the legs are so long but don't have a spreader for stability. It's one of those, "if you don't use it, you won't understand, but you'll know if you need it" sorts of items.

A tripod is to be used in *any* way the owner can think... tripods this tall were not merely designed to be used on mountains. I would argue that a tripod of this height is overkill on such terrain. They are probably more use to architectural and to large group portrait photographers. Did this reviewer never hear of a step ladder? - Gitzo actually had a photo of their first ever tripod of this height on the cover of one of their catalogues about twelve or thirteen years ago, the photo was taken in the 1050's I think, and the lady photographer using the very tall tripod in that photo was on a stepladder... and she was not on the side of a mountain, but in a rather flat field if memory serves me rightly.
I had in the past (last 30 years) probably 6 or 7 tripods, from different brands. After my first Gitzo, back in 2015, I realized that I was just fooling myself, when trying to buy other brands, looking for a quality tripod. After buying a Gitzo, you will probably never buy another brand again. The quality is impressive and without a doubt the best I have ever experienced... and once inside the Gitzo system, you will never go back in your lifetime, period. It´s expensive, but you spread the investment through long years of use and without worrying about something failing, for me worth every cent. I bought 3 units, from the traveler series to systematic, just because of the different uses. This one in particular is also on the list, for use in architecture and landscape.
I was just looking at this tripod earlier today. My current tripod tops out at 84" with the center column extended. If I need higher than that right now, I use a step ladder with a Platypod on the top step. If using this tripod at full height on flat ground, I would still need that same step ladder to use the camera.
Very nicely filmed, your videos looks soo good! Very tall tripod. I have a Gitzo GT3540XLS about 230cm and I find it usable quite often in landscape and architecture sometimes indoors. Anywhere where the ground is leaning one of the legs need to be extended. Sometimes the viewpoint is up there🤪
The photographer who spends that immense amount of money for an immense tripod like this presumably has a use case for it. I can see architectural or studio shooters having a use case for it. Less than fully extended, I can see a National Geographic photographer on safari atop a Range Rover with a $13K USD 800mm lens and a $500 gimbal head using this Gitzo. It's definitely not for everyone.
Definitely used to see nice Gitzos like this with gimbals for long lenses when i worked at a wildlife refuge, just middle class, often retired people dropping $$$ on nice kits because they loved it, i saw it all the time.

For sure up to the budget right ? if you are a one man show you won't need this tripod . if you have assistance do commercial shoots yes .but this one is pretty massive if you going to use it this tall probably have the support team help you to get up there anyway not from the ground up .. I was thinking if you use it your self maybe don't have to go all the way up . and still work just could be a bit heavy right t?
Remote monitoring and control with a smartphone/video recorder would be the only feasible way to regularly use this tripod fully extended, provided it’s reliable. I have yet to own a camera with truly reliable remote control.
Cool tripod, wanted to ask about the head though, looks like the sunwayfoto geared head, just wondering how you've found it, I've used the Manfrotto 410 for the past decade or so, it's getting a bit tatty now and looking for a replacement...
The head is ok. I think the manfrotto ones are a bit more durable so in most cases I tend to use the 405. The Sunwayfoto is good, I’m just not certain about how it manage over long term use.
yeah, I should probably try a 405 before deciding, would like to find a more compact and lighter solution that's still geared though. I shoot APS-C so a 405 is probably overkill for my X-H1 & 10-24. The other one that's caught my eye is the LeoFoto G2
@@marcusnewey8287 unfortunately the ones that I’d recommend are pretty pricey. Compact and lightweight geared heads which are going to last are probably the arca Swiss ones.

It’s great for plane spotters
One of the uses I imagine for this is for news reporters- setting up a remote camera to shoot a press conference or speech over a large crowd.

News people dont get cheap photographic gear to go into the field.

I would'nt use this as a tripod but rather as a tent base.

and at 4:20 he asks, "does anyone have a cherry picker?" or a scaffold?, it's that high, another reason for app control and ir triggers.

I find the CamRanger is a great option for that.
It gives me anxiety whenever I watch the bit of fully extending the legs near the canal, haha
