    Really like hearing from the growers with a passion for exotic and difficult to grow species. Bananas in Iceland, durian in Costa Rica, etc. Gives me hope for my paw paw in Minnesota.

      As long as you protect it from the severe cold, mulch it very well, you might be good. Hopefully you've got more than 1 tree, gonna need 2 for fruit.

    • @ericlivingston8027
      @ericlivingston8027 2 года назад +2

      It seems like that would be hard to do. Paw Paw only grow down to zone 5 and require a lot of chill hours. Only way I see you doing that is in a pot in the garage or a heated shed. Even when it fruits it needs a decent season at around 150-180 frost free days. It needs a lot of water too.

    • @tomelko
      @tomelko 2 года назад +1

      @@ericlivingston8027 A third of the state is zone 4B. Getting paw paw to fruit here has been done, but honestly the deer are a bigger challenge than the climate. I’m not even the only one in my neighborhood trying!

    That “tropical olive” looked very similar to Elaeocarpus floribundus, which is known as “jalpai” in Bangladesh. They taste sour with a hint of sweetness when ripe; can be eaten as is or as a pickle. Thanks for the awesome video, mate. Cheers!

      Wikipedia is saying Jalpai is Elaeocarpus serratus, either way, it's my favorite olive like fruit. It's sweet and sour without any bitterness. When unripe, it's just mostly sour, good in lentils and fish curries. We pickle it with sugar, spices, and mustard oil. The pickle is delicious!

    The Cerro de la Muerte is called like that because it is one of the coldest places in Costa Rica! Usually the temperature goes below 0° C in the night, and that is also part of the reason why people died crossing it before the road existed.

    Hi Jared. I’ve heard about Don before. There is another grower on the Caribbean side, his name is Peter Kring, farm called punta Mona I think. I visited his places a few years back and he grows durian , rambutan , pulasan, marang, lanzones, salak and a variety of other fruits. He is an American from San Diego but he has been farming there since the 80s. If you reach out to him he will probably give you a tour as well. Cheers

    Have you tried Salmberry? It is a rare kind of black raspberry that only grows in Gotland, Sweden. Mainly it is used for jam to be eaten together with their saffron pancakes. There is a very rare black raspberry growing in other parts of Sweden that some people claim is the same berry but the Gutes claim it is different, not sure about that since I have never found it myself but I tried salmberry and it is pretty delicious. It both look and taste a bit like a mix between a raspberry and a blackberry, slightly more sour.
    Salmberry is even more rare and elusive then cloudberry, there is more growing if you actually find a bush but since it is just growing on a single pretty large island (and possibly in a few places on the Swedish mainland and in Denmark). It is generally ready to pick during August. The version growing on the mainland is either called black or blue raspberry. Even the jam is impossible to find outside Gotland (I live in Kalmar which is not that far away and I tried to find it both in stores and on the internet, but no luck besides when I was in Visby).

    • @ericlivingston8027
      @ericlivingston8027 2 года назад

      Salmonberry grows a decent amount of places in America. I would certainly not put it next to cloudberry in rarity. Mine is growing just fine in Colorado and it grows wild in places like Organ and Washington state. Here cloudberry plants are not really sold anywhere because they need cold summers which is not most of America. Meanwhile the salmonberry I know is sold by many online retailers including big ones like Raintree nursery here in the states.

    • @loke6664
      @loke6664 2 года назад

      @@ericlivingston8027 Not the same thing. Salmberry is blue/black in color (Salmbär in the dialect from Gotland). Maybe I should use the term Blue Raspberry instead.
      Salmonberry does not grow in Europe.

    • @ericlivingston8027
      @ericlivingston8027 2 года назад

      @@loke6664 When you say blue raspberry that grows black raspberries I think those are more common too. Many nurseries sell them here in the USA. I think native foods nursery sells them, Nourse Farms sells variants of black raspberries called things like Jewel, Bristol and Niwot here, Edible landscaping sells Ohios Treasure. I think they just call them black raspberry here.

    • @loke6664
      @loke6664 2 года назад +1

      @@ericlivingston8027 I am specifically talking about "Rubus caesius" and it only grows wild in northern Europe. How they taste in comparison to any American variant I can not tell, neither if those are wild or domesticated versions.
      They are exceedingly rare here, I never seen anyone selling them besides as jam in Gotland, any supermarket here have frozen cloudberry.

But he also often incorporates a deeper historical and ecological point of view in his work lately, similar to your travels in Madagascar.

    Omg, you should have told us at the beginning that this olive wasn’t the olive we all know and love/hate… 😂
    At first I was cringing so hard, thinking, who the hell would eat an olive straight off the tree?? I have once on a school trip, and it tasted all… bitter/poison-y…
    Then the guide explained to us - this is why you pickle olives. 🤷‍♀️
    It took me decades to enjoy green olives, I only liked black ones, then, of course, as all my stories go - one time I over-eat and puke it all, and I suddenly prefer the other olives.🤣
    Like what you said about the person who discovered Szechuan… who tried this and said: maybe if I pickle it…? (what came first, the oil or the brine..?).
    Then I thought, WOW…
    you ate the olive straight from the tree and it wasn’t bad - that’s actually really interesting and probably unheard of…
    So now I’m all confused about why it’s even called an olive and it’s a shame we don’t know about it in the rest of the world.
    I love trying the “fresh” and pickled version of everything I eat.
    They’re exporting those… “extra-green” Italian olives now, that taste like you just picked them off a tree, magically removed all the bitterness and sold them… and I’m absolutely addicted to them.
    They’re rather expensive over here, but worth every penny, since all the other olives taste like industrial salt. Even ones you buy from a Muslim vendor whose mom just made them…

    We have a lake in Wisconsin, just north of Lake Winnebago, called Butte des Morts (hill of the dead). It’s a shallow lake, so it gets rough in windy weather, not safe for people in small boats. 🌊 Tragically there was a Meskwaki (Fox Native American) village that was massacred in 1730 by the French. There are burial mounds near Butte Des Morts, remnants of the many tragedies wrought by European settlers. 🙇🏼

    Hey the best thing u should find is a mantequilla avocado it apparently is the best avocado there is and I have lived a quarter of my life in Costa Rica 🇨🇷 it’s called mantequillla which means butter because of how rich it is the thing is that it’s quite rare I have never tried it myself so u may have a problem finding it u should also try the double banana it is two bananas attached to each other, u should review the red pineapple it’s red on the outside and white on the inside it is much less sour and strong than most pineapples, it is very sweet and has a bit of a flavour of its own

    This is some proper rare fruit hunting. While you have had success finding rare fruits in markets and have made many interesting videos about those finds, I think the only way you are going to continue to find new, rare fruits is by touring rare fruit collectors' collections. Markets, even in other countries, only sell so many types of fruit, and you have made videos on just about all of them already. But, there are many great rare fruit collections out there, both in the US and internationally. I definitely want to see you visit more rare fruit collections like this one (and like you did in the past when you toured Adam Shafran and Steven Wilson's collections).

    So I was gonna recommend you pejibaye, but you just tried it in the last video I believe. Now you show me a freaking fruit from my own country I had not even yet heard of. And also that weird fruit you showed right before interviewing Don Carlos, that's the true guava, what English speakers know as guava is actually called "Guayaba"over here, and you should really try'em, the true guava I mean.

    I appreciated the bite shot, a slice doesn’t do much to show the texture I think.
