My Vietnamese mom will add (unripe?) dracontomelons to pork rib stew for a nice kick of acidity and flavor.

The Spondius (sp) you have there 14:42 turns yellow in Barbados. I think they're ripe here now actually. I believe we call them hog plums. When green, we eat them with salt.
I think you are right. Pretty sure its hog plum aka spondius mombin
in the DR we call them turkey plum, in Spanish of course.
We call them common plums in TT and we call another kind hog plum
Dracontomelon sounds like a dragon/grass type Pokémon.
I often feel like I'm learning things from this channel that I couldn't learn elsewhere on the internet, if not due to my only speaking english. Typing "dracontomelon" into youtube the top two results are a vlog and a minute long video more about the tree, both very cool and informative in their own ways of course. And the wikipedia pages are pretty sparse.
Like, I probably would have gone my entire life without hearing about dracontomelon if not for this channel, much less knowing enough terminology to find dried ones to buy online.
It looks more like a Sleestak from land of the lost than a. smiley face.
Or a grey alien head ;)

I had some in Vietnam. These are not eaten raw but cooked or preserved because of its tartness. The taste is a bit like a mixe of Plum/Green Mango/Tamarind with crunchy texture.
Incase you are reading this, go to Germany again, I’m sure you can find some berries you have never tried before like Sanddorn (seaberry/sea-buckthorn) , Weißdorn (hawthorn) or even Wildrose (wild rose)

@@WeirdExplorerif you go back to Germany or Sweden or Finland, or really any part of northern / Central Europe, you should try what in Swedish is called Smultron (Fragaria vesca). In German I believe it’s called Wald-Erdbeere.
So it’s a strawberry relative. A regular strawberry is a Fragaria × ananassa.
But a smultron is smaller, with a very different texture. The flavour is also very different, even though these are smaller then a strawberry, one small berry has more flavour then a whole strawberry.
A strawberry is a lot more sour and watery in its taste. While a smultron has more complex flavour profile with a lot more aromas.
They taste as different from eachother as maybe pears and apples. Yes, you can tell they are related, but yet very different taste.
Fragaria vesca had a long history of being cultivated, and eaten in Europe. Super beloved for its taste all the way back to Roman time and beyond.
The problem for commercial use all through history, is that it’s delicate and has a very short shelf life. Which makes it hard to sell even on a small commercial scale.
Jams sometimes were made of it. But they are small and taste so much better fresh, that it’s very rare to see them used as anything other then eaten fresh.
That is the problem that created the strawberry. To be able to have something that would work for commercial use. A hybrid created with the goal of having a bigger berry and more importantly firmer texture and higher durability. Resulting in a berry that could be used and eaten similarly to Fragaria vesca but that has a lot less flavour, but actually could have commercial purpose.
It still common to find Fragaria vesca grow in the wild in parts of Europe. But also cultivated and commonly grown for personal use.
In English strawberry was originally the name for Fragaria vesca. But then Fragaria × ananassa came and sort of stole the name. So now I believe Fragaria vesca is sometimes called wild strawberry or alpine strawberry. Which I think is a pretty bad name. (As they are different species. Like using the same name for a organs and mandarin)
In Swedish they are considered completely separate different berries, with completely different names.
@@IQzminus2 Oh that's what those are! I saw these for sale in France a couple years ago. I didn't pick them up because they were very expensive and wilted. next time I see them I'll pick them up.

Just found Dracontomelon duperraneum in central Hong Kong. There's also a rare tree listed in the Old & Valuable tree government registry - fascinating. And in the busy shopping district Causeway Bay outside a mall there's even a row of the same Dracontomelon duperreanum. Fruits dangling from the tree. Wonder how they got selected and planted.

The one you talked about saying it looks like an ambarela fruit is found on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago we call them common plums. We eat them with salt , pepper , garlic or they are boiled in sugar and red coloring
A little correction on Sau bao tu, it's not means "crocodile stomach", While Sau is the name of the fruit happens to have the same word as crocodile they are not mean to have any relation. Bao tu is indeed stomach but it's usually use to imply baby/young fruit.
This fruit often use to add sour to soup/stew, dry pickle for tea snack and pickle for drink.
I haven't even seen that movie but I know the reference, and yep that nut does look like Jack Skellington

You should try sweet cup fruit, it is a type of passionfruit with very hard shell. It is supposed to taste very aromatic and sweet like a granadilla!
I thought that sweet cup was a soft shell type. very small, red skin or bright orange, white flesh and kind of floral taste.
It grows wild in Jamaica.
Maybe your sweet cup is a different type of passion, I would certainly like to try it if that's the case.
I am pretty sure you are talking about Passiflora foetida. Small fruit with some sort of moss-like bract around it. The sweet cup I was talking about is called Passiflora maliformis but I knew they were both called sweet cups. I often call the Passiflora foetida as ‘wild passionfruit’ but many people call it in different ways

These are interesting! I don't know that I'd be into the whole unripe fruit with salt and chili, but like, I've never had the chance to try it. Who knows!

Jared. I found a fruit mislabeled as Abiu in an Australian foreign market by a man who did not speak good English. It looks the same in the outside but has peachy flesh inside which is sourer the closer to the inside you go. With slightly larger browner seeds... Perhaps you will find this if you consistently taste test Abiu you see

That sounds delicious! I’m going to have to seek out a recipe. I love peach ketchup, so another fruit one to add to the list would be awesome. Does it ever get made with feijoa? Or is it true guavas only? I like feijoa more than the guavas I’ve tried, but to be fair, I haven’t found many different types 😅
I just had a dream that I was eating all kinds of fruit but there was really small black berries that tasted good that stood out. Thanks for buying a plane ticket in my dream Jordan. I got them at the airport in Saigon. But they were available at supermarkets in Vietnam. I've never seen them in the US

Are you having problems asking locals questions? I know language can be a barrier but it seems like they could tell you if a fruit is ripe or how it is usually eaten.
