holy shit, I always thought it was a remote
Eclipse almost fitting too that he slams the stress ball just by mentioning “gods among men”
It's a stress ball which is colored blue.
When he talks about the 'little blue planet HERE' while throwing the ball on top of the container symbolizing the fact that the earth is very vulnerable, so that the senator would maybe give him the import license
Jesse Eisenberg / Lex Launer
My favourite use of it comes later in the film;
As you hear news reports turning against Superman, Lex stands atop his tower tosses his Blue Stress Ball into the air and catches it. He has the world in the palm of his hand.

I personally liked how the character evolved in this and even in Justice League. When he started out, he seemed like a modern day high energy high pressuring salesman whose pitch was a weapon that could kill Superman. Reminiscent of Gene Hackman's evil Real Estate version. Then when he tells the scout ship to teach him everything, that's when he started to slip, partially due to the knowledge he's learned driving him nuts as well as Darkseid's influence on him pretty much frying his brain. Then after all is said and done and he's out of Arkham, he's more calmer, cooler and collected but he still wants to kill Superman.
The film was a clunk of mess and really didn't do a good job to explain his motivations and how he went from nutjob to stoic psychopath. Hopefully in the new cut we get more backstory on how he became the person he was (pre-completely losing his mind).
@@ChatrboxCB Dude, they did explain why he went psychotic. It was a series of factors. The psychosis was already there when he made mention of his abusive father. It amplified when he gained access to the ship, because as a result of fooling around with things he barely understood, he got into contact with an entity so bad that it makes what he does look like child's play. Darkseid, through Steppenwolf was able to influence Lex. He was already a bastard, but the influence made him a bastard of biblical proportions, but as a result, his sanity was starting to tear away. Watch his performance again from beginning to end, only this time imagine a human brain slowly melting like a candle whenever he starts slipping further into it. That's Darkseid's influence.
Thanks for the detailed explanation Shane - I will re-watch it again with this in mind. It seems to be a more different (extreme) take on the Luther character. Also, I don’t really understand how he went from full melt down to functioning human with evil intentions (ending credits). Must be some time jump forward?

@@bensturdy2891 it’s a sarcastic joke 😐
We can clearly see in this scene that Lex Luthor hates powerful men who in public are kind and charismatic, but in private they are violent and cruel, like his father was to him, and like his father was raised, in West Germany, where Hitler played the charismatic leader and brutal dictator, and people cheered him with flowers and claps, like the businessmen did to Luthor's father, that used to beat Luthor Jr. in private.
And that's why he hates Superman, because he doesn't have this duality of being a good inspirational man ain public and a bad person in private, so Luthor wanted to exterminate him so bad, because like he said, "if God is all powerful, he cannot be all good", and he wanted to prove that Superman icon is a fraud and tried to turn everyone against him, in the Africa incident, in the bombing in the Capitol, and even making him an enemy to Batman, because he doesn't believe in someone who is good all the time.
Lex Luthor character is just brilliant.
Tadeu Henrique this basketball scene fooled me that he was the mastermind and pulling the strings since the beginning
Correction, he was probably referring to the post-WW2, East Germany which was in under control by the Soviets; Stalin and his successors. Not West Germany, which is a flip side of the coin, largely influenced by the West; NATO. Also, Hitler was already gone for a decade or more in relation to the time he was probably referring to.
That's true.
Rotten tomatoes wont get this
East Germany and this was after Hitler and where does he say his father was cruel to him in this scene?
Brings me tears to my eyes to see all the people appreciate this brilliant performance. Clowns till this day are making video essays trying to dunk on his performance but I think that goes to show how perfect he was. I absolutely love this film. Gets more relevant each and every year.
I absolutely agree.
There are a lot of parallels that can be drawn from this movie.
"Bitter sweet pain amongst men is having knowledge with no power"
"The fever, the rage, the feeling of powerlessness, turns good men, cruel"

A war to end all wars. Kinda like we do, at some point in our lives for socioeconomic elevation.
Wayne could have just accepted his parents death and could've lived a billionaire's life. But he instead chose to become a vigilante and wasted his life. He could've had a family of his own... a woman, his wife, to call his own, to come home to everyday. Maybe a few kids. He could've made it.

@@Jaime13R then what r u doing here. Move on
I don’t see any problem with this version of Lex, he’s amazing.
I agree
It wasn’t bad, it’s just not the aesthetic look Lex is usually portrayed with especially after the animated universe. Lex is a bit like Batman. He’s physically and mentally one of the greatest humans, and so that, along with his riches and life, make him feel like a god-man....until he meets the actual God-man. And that’s part of his character usually. Meanwhile, Jesse Eisenburg aesthetically looks like the Riddler or something. Even some of his mannerisms. A different and changed, but still solid and good portrayal and performance. I feel about this the same way I do about the new Batman movie coming out. That’s it’s gonna be GREAT, and that Robert Pattinson is gonna kill it, but that Pattinson aesthetically would have been the PERFECT NIGHTWING or Robin. Tall and (comparatively) lanky.
@@youngknowledgeseeker Lex began as a mad scientist character before being rebooted during the 1980s as a businessman. A 1980s businessman. That's all fine, but it's not the 1980s any more, so Zack remoulded Lex as a tech genius/businessman for our age (with a bit of that earlier mad scientist bit in there also). Why can't people see that.
@@ShanghaiRooster i grew up with the Justice League unlimited cartoon so I just really like that Lex. But like I said, it wasn’t a bad performance or portrayal I was just looking forward to that version. And yeah I guess tech geniuses of our age do not really give a sht about their bodies.

I am glad Lex wasn't a dark brooding character he was eccentric but at the same time brought the movie to life.

People don't realize that Lex WAS like this when he was younger in the comics
They could say he was taking pills or drugs to forget his abusement memory from his father
But he’s not supposed to be young in the movies. He’s supposed to be at least the same age as Superman, if not older, and have experience as a businessman.
@@j.graves4405 who says he's supposed to be the same age as Superman?
Really love the eccentric spin on Luthor, as despite it's prevalence, he's really ruthless and morally depraved just like he is in the comics. Him wanting to use the kryptonite as a deterrent against Superman is RIGHT out of the comics even if it isn't his primary reason for wanting him dead. His reason for hating Superman in this film actually makes a bit more grounded sense than some comics where he's just jealous of the man of steel and believes him to be an obstacle course for mankind's evolution. Luthor's hatred of him in here stems from no one good and powerful rescuing him from his father's abuse. Superman, representing both the good and the powerful, is a psychologically harmful reminder of those "abominations".
***** Well, this is only Luthor's first appearance in the DCEU. He needs to start somewhere. Eventually, he'll grow into the Luthor you are more accustomed to. That seems to be where they are taking all of the characters. Having them go through crucibles and trials in order to shape them into the characters you love so dearly. Besides, I think this Lex already had many of those things you mentioned. You see his scientific/inventive prowess in this film and you see his unlimited resources that he uses in his schemes. And while Superman is gone (temporarily), Luthor still feels powerful. He doesn't care that he has been locked up and wasn't afraid of Batman at all. His smugness all throughout means that he clearly has more tricks up his sleave. But when Superman returns, he'll probably have that same inferiority complex. Right now, it's difficult to judge given the fact that BVS currently stands as the first and only appearance of Luthor...
***** Jesse's Lex was said to turn LEXCORP from an oil machinery business into a technology conglomerate. This wasn't done by his father, it was done by him. As for his scientific prowess, he used Zod's fingerprints to access the scout-ship (with his bare hands) and reverse-engineered a genesis chamber to use for the awakening of Doomsday (as the genesis chambers in MOS were far smaller). You also recognize how manipulative Luthor was, hence his ability to get Superman and Batman (though mostly Batman) to show a great deal of mistrust for one another. And who says he believes in these deities? He was just comparing Superman to them given his abilities and actions. As for the abuse part, it would make more sense to non-comics fans if Lex's malevolence and hatred towards their enemy was inspired by their dark pasts as opposed to them hating their enemies simply because they are jealous of them or believe they are hindering Human evolution like comics Lex does. And like I said to you before, remember that this is only his first appearance in the DCEU. It's the start of his arc. He'll grow into the Lex you like eventually. The creators just want to tell the story more gradually and differently. It's just like with Superman. MOS was about his introduction. BVS was about his career going forward. And JL will feature him as a beacon of hope, now that the world generally considers him beloved. Personally, I think it is far more interesting to see these characters develop into whom they are destined to be rather than be them from the start. That's especially true when you put them in movies and need compelling stories outside of what comics fans will enjoy...
+Deo Robinson Very well said. I could not have explained it better. Thank you for sharing this!
Still a fucking stupid Lex Luther
spideyfan2002 ok 1. The movie hasn't included the phase of Luthors growing character; meaning it doesn't show him earning these things himself, because he already has it ( so if a movie(sequel)based on him comes out, they would show how he got where he is) and 2. You said he was an atheist, everything he says about god is said in a mocking way, it's his way of justifying his belief and opinion about god.
"Now you don't have to use a silver bullet, but if you forge one, well then, we wouldn't have to depend upon the kindness of monsters."
That line alone is genius because it directly foreshadows Doomsday during the climax later on.
I think it makes more sense that he's calling Superman one of the monsters. At this very moment, they don't have any silver bullets to use against these monsters that walk among us. (refers to "The meta-human theists.") But if they make some, they won't have to hope that Superman or any others like him will destroy the earth.
@@xrstevenson it's both no all of the above.
His plan in the movie is just stupid, he doesn’t want to rely on the “kindness of monsters” so he makes another monster???? And then this monster is worse than the last one because it CAN’T be reasoned with. So his plan was to just make a bigger problem for everyone. He doesn’t even benefit from that because he still gets arrested for creating Doomsday.
That’s the problem with Lex in this movie and Snyder’s DCEU as a whole, it thinks it’s smarter than it is. But when you actually put the plot under a microscope, the whole thing falls apart because the story is just nonsensical. Not to mention that the characters’ motivations are all over the place.
I love how the scene starts with him throwing a three pointer, it's just simbolic of how he always does perfect in his life

To be fair, BvS was pretty mediocre. Though maybe if they released the Snyder Cut beforehand (all 4 hours of it) it would've been the movie to permanently get the DCEU back on track, but with the way things are going, especially with WB's new "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" paired with "minimal connections to the DCEU so our execs won't need prior knowledge of comic books" strategy, the future of this cinematic universe is seeming grimmer and grimmer (a là WW84 & Birds of Prey)

Young, Hairy, Weirdo, etc. And Jesse potrayed him perfectly. If only DCEU have a good time his arc will complete as Iconic Lex. People nowadays always turns a blind eye whenever someone "nitpicking" referencing in comic. We talk from experience to note yourself not for yours selfish opinions.
Yeha, but there's a reason that early version of Lex faded and away and the Post-Crisis version became so popular. Because the post-crisis version is better in every way imaginable.
The first Lex Luthor was a Russian super-genius crime boss. Never in the comics has Lex ever been anything like this.
As a character on its own, I don’t think Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor is bad, but it is an awful adaptation of the character from the comics.
Look at any other version of Lex in any other media (Smallville, Superman The Movie, Lego Batman 2, the DCAU, the Super Friends cartoon, DC Universe Online), literally every single one of them adapt the character and Lex’s relationship to Superman better than this movie. Those are Lex Luthor, this is not. It’s an interesting interpretation, but you’re either lying or stupid if try and claim that this is what Lex was always like. And trying to lie to prove your selfish opinion, doesn’t change the facts.
I like this neurotic version if Lex. The only take I've seen till now was a calm and composed businessman who had seemingly no reason to attack superman.
Micheal Rosenbaum
You cannot love what's bad!
The whole point of Luthor in the comics is that his ego is too fragile to handle Superman stealing his thunder, and becoming the hero of Metropolis (a title that Lex had held previously).
Lex Luthor should not be a sympathetic villain. He represents the worst of humanity (its greed, wrath, its over indulgence), which contrasts with Superman (who represents the best in humanity).
This Lex doesn’t serve as any kind of foil to Superman, because he’s just some random tech mogul. I think having Lex be an homage to Mark Zuckerberg and others like him is interesting commentary, but it doesn’t fit the character. Not to mention it just takes away from him and Superman’s overall relationship if Superman is just some mopey idiot and Luthor is a weirdo analogue of Mark Zuckerberg.
This version of Lex is one of the most interesting ones that we have had to date that encapsulates all aspects of Lex as he has been and not just one version. Everyone knows that Lex originally started out as a mad scientist type of villain with the red hair and the flying city. Now that whole obsessive hatred for Superman and the bald head came along at a later date and time, originally he was pissed off because Superman kept getting in the way of his plans. Now then Lex's whole businessman alpha male BS crap didn't happen until much much much later on in the 1980's based on Donald Trump and Ted Turner. Being overweight, frumpy looking with cigars etc etc. And that came about through modern re-interpretation that became popular and ingrained into the mainstream culture etc.
He has gone through a number of reinterpretations and revamps as have the majority of the characters through the years to fit with the times. Through the years he has been mad scientist, tycoon businessman (which has also been changed through the times) mastermind etc. The businessman aspects have been changed numerous times going from the frumpy businessman to Alpha Male to basically the comic book version of Heihachi Mishima of corrupt businessman miser who is keeping an excellent public image while pulling strings behind the scenes. Jesse Eisenberg's version is a rare example that encapsulates all of the versions. And before anyone tries to say that Lex is not a villain, he's an anti-villain/anti-hero that is different versions from non-canonical issues. You might find it common for Clark and Lex to team up and work together more frequently nowadays but he is still a selfish opportunistic bastard that wants to be on top and still a villain.
It is also one of the smartest versions in films and live action by him knowing who he is off the bat. It's also heavily based off of the Superman Birthright comic which Zack and everyone has stated. As for the argument I've heard from my friends of "Lex shouldn't know who Clark is. He's not interested in knowing who he is etc." Birthright Lex has him literally monitoring Superman's activities, he even does push Lois off a skyscraper etc.
In the comics for MOS-BVS Lex is actively collecting information on everything to do with Superman and keeping tabs on Batman in the aftermath of MOS. So he's spent over a year putting this plan in motion. This version is a modern interpretation that combines all these aspects and uses the Birthright version as a template: He is an eccentric business man of a modern day Fiction 500 company and to go with the evolution of the times LexCorp has been rebranded and remade as a tech company rather than stockbroker and oil industry one who has this good public persona (probably learned it from Lex Sr) but is a scheming, manipulative bastard behind the scenes who is consistantly looking for ways to come out on top, a mad scientist with R&D projects and using Zod's body for Doomsday and a friggin mastermind who comes damn near close to succeeding in his goal of debasing and killing Superman. This is him starting out much like Clark was starting out in MOS and by the end of it and by extension Justice League, he evolves into the more classical version of Lex that everyone is familiar with and probably wanted.
VERY well said. I totally agree that his version encapsulates all of the versions to one degree or another. We get the businessman (for the first time cinematically), the political schemer, the criminal mastermind, and most importantly to this version, the mad scientist which goes all the way back to Luthor's origins in the comics. I love the idea of having the character grow and evolve into the more calm, collected Luthor similarly to how he evolved in the comic books from crazy supervillain to a suaver, more sophisticated version who hid his evil very well. I totally agree with you that he evolves by the end of Justice League, and this is why I was *dying* to see his Lex controlling the Legion of Doom in the sequel. Not sure if we will ever see that but with the Snyder Cut coming out to HBO, I guess there is hope! fingers crossed 🤞

I love this version of a new age investor type Lex Luthor than your old school businessman Lex from older movies. we have seen people like Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk etc and l think Zack is trying to make Lex an evil version of that. Young, intelligent and ambitious.
I love Samuel Otten's bvs analysis videos so much because I now understand Lex's behavior in this scene so much better.
+Ian Levinson I am so glad you know of him. He has helped me so much to understand this movie better.

I know I'm in the minority, but this man's introduction is iconic.
It is. These people are just morons
@Ryan Akwar this Lex is the first version of lex luthor in the comics.
I’m going to leave this comment here for me to see this and remember. The theme song is EPIC and the intro as to what led says matches. Ugh it’s so perfect.
After watching this movie three times i am really starting to like this version of lex
You're not supposed to. That's like liking George Clooney as Batman.

Batman v Superman and even the character Lex Luthor himself, aged like a fine wine.
Aged horribly.
I’m not a Superman fan but this version of Lex has always been my favorite
Mine too
Lex Luthor is the key to all of this, if we get Lex working... cause he's a funnier character than we've ever had before.
Brilliant.
it's like poetry sorta it rhymes
I would say this character is as bad as Jar Jar..almost. Maybe Jake Lloyd.
Megra92 nope. Not at all
Hahaha no.
This movie made me like Jesse Eisenberg as an actor. His Lex Luthor was so damn good
Jesse is perfect for any role
He is an oscar level actor
People : Too young to be a billionaire in fantasy story, poor choices of actor..
DC Comic Lex Luthor first appearance and Mark Zuckerberg : Are we a joke?
IKR , especially Superman Birthright
There's a reason that early version of Lex faded and away the Post-Crisis version became the definitive version of the character.
0:10, Lex mocks the "really" in "really great" because it's ungrammatical. He then mocks senator Finch's accent with his pronunciation of "kindness of monsters".
I don’t see Lex Luthor’s character as a slight against businessmen and rich people but rather a metaphor for what happens when someone with great potential chanels it commit evil acts as opposed to Superman who uses his potential to be mankinds savior.
Lex's hairstyle is just perfect 🔥

AMOGUS REFERENCE ??????????????
Personally I love this portrayal of Lex Luthor. I think what some people could not understand is that Snyder likes to "peel" his characters. For example, Superman wasn´t Superman at his very best until the very end of MoS (after he kills Zod thus taking the vows to never kill again and understanding the limits he as Superman should have); On the the other hand Batman wasn´t really Batman until the end of DoJ (after he realizes that he has cross the line thus returning him to the feeling of hope that man can be good) In my opinion of the subplots of DoJ was Lex Luthor Begins, I love that they have make him younger and pretentious and by having his head shaved at the end we really see the true Lex Luthor. #releasethesnydercut
Batman isn't batman till DoJ? He's frickin operate for 20 years and had lost one robin already! Then what kind of Batman he was?? And it took 20 years??
@@edweefication i meant he isn't the Batman we are used to. You have to notice that Snyder thesis is that Superman is a moral beacon, he show us how Batman would be in a world without Supes.
@Red Saber What wow I learn new things about this movie lol
NGL, with his head shaved and nice grown up suit on, he still delivered his lines like a nerd asking a girl to prom while pissing himself with a semi erection on the down low.
@@konte641 You're projecting harder than Superman trying to out heat-vision Doomsday.
I love the cinematography this movie has... can’t wait for the Snyder cut
Playing basketball is a great way to introduce a villain
I happened to like Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. Bryan Cranston was the original choice for the character but Eisenberg won the role. I thought Eisenberg did a great job. Watching him here helped me rid of myself of the experience of when i saw Rio 2. Another film from Jesse Eisenberg.
That's actually not true. Cranston was not in the running. It was just a rumor because he was bald and played a bag guy in breaking bad

Luthor you very handsome..good luck😀💙
When I hear Jesse’s voice, I think of Rio. lol!
So do I hahah. I couldn’t take this lex Luther seriously.
Me too
It's dope how this Lex is directly influenced by Lex Luthors first appearance in comic books. He was a young, traumatized, ruthless too smart for his own good genius
This take on Lex does not translate well as the whole erratic and jumpy behavior is outdated nowadays. No disrespect on him, but who in the right mind would cast Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. It’s just awful in every way.
Personally I enjoyed this incarnation. He reflects the frustrated youth who struggles to reconcile the suffering of mortality with the existence of God. His erratic and jumpy behaviour bely the constant turmoil he experiences. The clash between rationality and primal emotion. He masks it with a positive spin in public but when the mask is taken off he expresses a deep hatred for the structure of reality and the perfect catharsis of proving the flaws in reality comes in the form of Superman, a godlike being that for all intents and purposes acts as a God over humanity. Being an awkward silicon valley type/tech billionaire is the icing on the cake that adds a sense of modernity and relatability to the version of the character.
@@stevemudkip4701 Lex doesn't care about god... he is an atheist in this movie, everything he says about gods are metaphors in order to state why he can't stand Superman's existence... Lex is obsessed with power, he was abused when he was a child, so he grew up to believe that anyone with more power than him is an enemy. He can't stand the feeling of powerlessness caused by Superman's mere existence... and he wants people to praise him more than anyone else, as they did before Superman showed up

Villains exists:-
Marvel: Not evil, but see things differently
DC: Evil to the core..
I definitely prefer DC here.
horrible take
90% of marvel villains are generic bad guys that are bad because yes
@@Yono_A1533 I think it’s more in the sense that Marvel villains, even the technically “pure evil” ones, are just large hams who think they’re entitled to rule or bullshit like that. But they don’t straight out enjoy being evil. This Lex, on the other hand, definitely does. I still think Eisenberg went waaay too much into overacting territory, but moments like him gleefully telling Superman he’ll burn his mother alive... that’s when you know he’s truly rotten to the core.
@@rickblaine9670 true, but i mean that in the mcu most of the villains are boring and generic, i hope they don't ruin Dr.Doom
