    I'm from Bombay and settled in the U.S. about a quarter century ago. This New Year's eve I was in Bombay and we decided to take a trip to Kolkata, which has been described as a filthy city, dying city and all of that in our media. But as far as my history knowledge goes, Cal was the political, cultural, spiritual and scientific capital of India. All of our literary and scientific giants were from Bengal (East and West).
    Our trip to Cal was a shocking experience because reality was quite the opposite from what we had imagined.
    Kolkata is beautiful, clean, beautiful promenades and vast open grounds for the public. Traffic was much smoother with no traffic jams compared to Bombay. Very little garbage strewn on the street, no building debris, Lots of cleanliness that we in Bombay are not used to. Bombay is a big garbage dump so readers please don't believe anybody that tells you that it's a lie. Other than around Park Street where we stayed at the Oberoi Grand Hotel, we took cab rides to Howrah, Hoogly, Alipore, Salt Lake. All these neighborhoods were so well maintained, inhabited by decent neighbors. I'm thinking of relocating to Kolkata because BOMBAY is the most filthy and unlivable city in India. Even the people of Kolkata were so helpful and courteous and disciplined. Bombay is the dead city...or rather the fastest dying city in India.
    Jackson, Mississippi.

    Kolkata has changed beyond recognition which has not been projected in this video. It should have also focused on Salt Lake city with sprawling Sector V humming with IT industries, Rajarhat New Town, Second Hooghly Bridge, Sister Nivedita Bridge to cite a few. Govts. of West Bengal and India should come forward to package this great city to make it more attractive to both the foreign and domestic tourists.

      +Amitabha Roy Foreign Tourists don't want to see second grade bridges and IT sectors. They have 10 times the quality of that in the states and Europe . What is unique is the character of the city

    Having visited Kolkata I cannot iterate enough the dishonesty of referring to this city as clean. A westerner who has not visited this city cannot imagine how filthy it is. When you get there you will be shocked to the core. That being said I will never try to deter anyone from visiting here. I have personally gathered enormous spiritual strength from visiting India in general and this city in particular. I have been there twice and will possibly visit again.

    Kolkata is a cleaner and a modern city. Nicknamed City of Joy. This video provides an interesting and fascinating insight into the city. The historical background to the city is well explored. Kolkata is a modern and cleaner city. I visited the city in 2013 and observed significant changes. There are shopping malls and business parks, which Salt Lake City features. I plan to visit the city next year and visit a few of the sites featured in the video.

    Nobody can cover all the places of a city or state within a limited budget and time. That's why capturing photos or shooting videos of each and every places of interest is not at all possible. However, this video is well-researched, well-captured. But adding a few locations like Nakhoda Mosque, Dakshineswar Temple, Jorasanko Thakurbari, Nandan area and Saltlake(Science city or any other area) could have surely improved it.

  • @44455525
    @44455525 10 лет назад +10

    The video only shows the monuments made by British and have more emphasis on slums, but there is no mention of science city, Birla planetorium ,Nandan, Vidyasagar setu etc and also there is no visualisations of recent developments in the likes of skyscrappers, shopping malls ,kolkata subways, Beautified river sides and mush more. so i would rate it 2 out of 5

    • @DipanjanPaul
      @DipanjanPaul 10 лет назад +7

      What can you expect from them, by India they mean European settlements, churches etc and whatever Indian are slums and poverty. Basically westerners are brain wahsed people, they have their own agenda. But don't worry, westerners can not sustain staying like this. Soon they are going to be washed out by Indians in next 50 years.

  • @ranajitbanerjee291

    Kolkata is not only the City of Joy but also a city of culture, city of humanity, city of love, and a city of spirituality. 5 Nobel laureates of India came from Kolkata. We love life. So we try to maintain everything old and new.Therefore we have hand pulled rickshaws,trams,country boats, and so on. I have been to all metro cities of India many times, and the more we see them the more I love Kolkata. Kolkata has given birth to Swami Vivekananda, whom BJP is trying to make political model without understanding him. Even recently Kolkata has given Sri La Prabhupad to whose feet the americans and europeans are sitting today. And cleanliness. I think Kolkata is now cleaner than any other metro cities in India. And CPM has destroyed all the industries in collaboration with Gujratis and Marathis. So it will take time to recover.

    • @ranajitbanerjee291
      @ranajitbanerjee291 5 лет назад

      Actually Sir what do you mean by development ? Clean super roads, Nice muli-storeyed buildings, malls, food parks, resorts, and all such things rich people look for ? But we in Kolkata has a different vision. In Kolkata even today our main mission is love for the poor , love for the down-trodden and sincere passion for helping people which was started by Swami Vivekananda. That is why it is the City for the Poor and City of Joy.We don't care how many billionaires stay here. Due to the teachings of great persons like Swamiji, Netaji, Rabindranath, Najrul, Sri Ramkrisna, Sri Aurobindo, Sri Chaitanya and many such others we always love people from anywhere. Love is our keynote, Joy is our music, which imparts on visitor a spell of passion which attracts them again and again.

    Let me say, within 25 mins. the travel videos generally show the landmarks of a certain city, not just the shopping malls and flyovers which stays at the backdrop. However, it is unfortunate that mostly the focused structures lay dilapidated and the areas nearby showed dirty, without any planned maintenance which in turn made our city look shabby

      This has nothing to do with communist rule and this is not the worst city. Kolkata is the safest city with most helpful people, with the most secular enviroment, with lesser economic diversity as compared to other metro cities, On average, population of kolkata is more mordern and educated as compared to other metro cities. Europians will find a homely mindset among kolkata people However americans won't. Thats what makes kolkata different that other cities. This is a people powered tradition. You learnt nothing.

      Thanks to the communists, Kolkata has been able to maintain its intellectuality, liberal thoughts, socialism, and the tag 'Cit of Joy'. Otherwise it could've been a hub of Trump supporting idiots. And if you have any problem with Kolkata, Get the f**k out of my city and go to Gujarat and stay at your Modi's fake American model.

      Loaded PGun jyoti and his goons destroyed West Bengal. Most of the top factories closed down alleging workers equality.
      I returned home Kolkata after ten years in 2014 and Mamata in four years 2011 to 2014 had changed the very appearance of Kolkata.
      Cleaner roads and AC buses. Lights and water even in the poorest areas. Communists can never do anything good. They are cancer on earth.

    Why the govt don't improve this slum of city

    • @batayangosh
      @batayangosh 8 лет назад

      Because Kolkata's Chief Minister our beloved Didi grew up in a slum and take pride of it, so she did not feel yet to create proper comprehensive rehabilitation for slum people. Earlier the leaders of communist party also spoke about the rights of poor people for last 30 years, so we are, kind of habituated to take pride saying "we are poor but honest", and do not want to be corrupted millionaire. We are happy to get a rs 8000 job and still call ourself a middle class rather to take risk of being an entrepreneur. Although our state produces the largest talent pool for the rest of India, our students from Industrial Entrepreneurship program look for jobs in other companies after graduation.

    few points. it seems from the video that whatever that has been created in kolkata has been created by westeners. there are plenty of other things to do in kolkata other than churches. like visit to belur mutt founded by swami vivekananda, dakhineswar temple, a walk by the ganges starting from princep ghat, visit to science city, a visit to jorasanko thakurbari - the house of Noble Lauriate Gurudeb Rabindronath Tagore, ferry ride on ganga, just to name some. And please note that kalighat temple allows non hindus also. & for ur kind info kolkata has a very very large population of middle class & not as u said very vary poor & very affluent. pl get ur facts correct before showing the city in a bad light.

But why were they in kolkata again? Did we invite them to visit India and they were making buildings for us for charity purposes? Ohhh no, they came to steal our freedom, our home, our land and all the great things we had. RIGHT !! GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT AND RESPECT OUR CULTURE THAT WE ARE STILL ALLOWING YOU ALL IN OUR HOME
