  • If you're ready to elevate your cannabis skills, knowledge, palate, service mastery and assessment ability, the 2022 Ganjier Certification Course is now open for enrollment at ganjier.com
    Curing is the process that involves controlling the temperature and humidity for a specific period of time to allow for chemical stabilization of harvested cannabis flower.
    In this brief tutorial, noted breeder and Ganjier instructor Kevin Jodrey breaks down the ideal parameters - including temperature and humidity as well as considerations of scale - for craft growers to produce optimal product.

    This is why i miss the medical era in california where most shops grew their own in house. Smaller facilities and smaller grows mean each plant gets more attention and they’re paying attention to all the details to be competitive with other shops. Growers put in that extra time, watch for variances, and would do proper flushes to get that clean white ash. I remember when GG4 dropped and i could pick up a nug simply by touching it and i remember sticking my face in jars and smelling so many flavors and nuances. Stuff was loud!
    All these small ops were indoors and everything was controlled.
    Fast-forward to now - growers don’t make money so they have to cut corners, grow in huge outdoor/greenhouse facilities, not worry about flushing or proper curing [lab testing is utter bs], and a lot seem to throw their nugs on trays to capture kief so they can sell another product dimishing the flowers’ smoke potential… and they still have to sell packs to the east coast on the downlow just to stay in the game.
    Bring back the medical small grow-ops!
    I also voted No in 2018 for rec because everyone i knew who grew in small ops told me the legislation is favoring tourists rather than patients. Yea, they also all got raided right at the same time it went recreational. The recreational market you have to be the big bucks just to play and you won’t survive against the big corporate pharma😔

    Measure active water (water activity) along with moisture content at commercial scale if your budget allows it. Get the number around 0.6 and your are hitting the sweet spot where no microbial growth will occur. You will find that all different flowers hold different end moisture content in relation to it's active water content if you are trying to get as "food safe" as possible. Probably more useful for the Canadian large scale producers out there.
    Bud will ALWAYS be better either home grown or craft produced, regardless of dry/cure methodology.

    Best way I have found AND it’s a flawless method. Simple too. Cut all fans off, minimal air circulation beneath plants and keep H at 60 and Temps at 60-65. All while being completely dark. 7-10 days then go to a jar. Crack once a day. Cured in for me in about 60 days. ALL while dark. Happy Harvesting Fam!

      Have you heard of Brennenstuhl Moisture Detector. Stick the prongs in the stem and when it hits 12% it's ready for a grove bag, a good size bag that lets it work its magic and let the nugs breath releasing oxygen so no burping required. Not tried either but thinking about it and no need for 62% boveda either.

    Duuuude! So, my mentor has been growing in the desert for over a decade, her stuff is always bomb, but soo dry! I found out that when she cures, she removes her preoduct from the jar and airs it out like shes at sea level in NY! Mkay? So, then, my first grow, i took notes. I DO NOT REMOVE THE BUDS TO BURP HERE IN THE HIGH DESERT!! A 5 second burp, lids back on and tumble to stir settled herb. I have been praised for my end result for flavor and freshness by my mentor and many others! 3 days on the line and its ready for a jar, so humidity control may be rec'm'd, but i suspect nature does its thing and if youre paying attention amd taking enough care from start to finish it shows. -talk to your plants! I was hoping Kevin would give an ideal humidity for bud in long term storage. Boveda are 65% so I guess that's likely about right. I put my bud in big glass jars (about 2 gallon) and burp frequently until they're under 70% (hygrometer in each) and then transfer to masons and burp less often. I haven't lost any so I guess that's about right. I have some two year old bud that's still really decent to smoke.

    • @GordonLittell
      @GordonLittell 2 года назад +2

      Boveda has 62% packs, I've used them for a few years. Keeps material ~60-63% RH. I too have 1-2 year cures that average around 58-60%, but that's a personal preference mate

    • @dertythegrower
      @dertythegrower 2 года назад +1

      Boveda and humidity packs longterm actually does not preserve terpenes. I have seen them used in huge operations in sealed containers.
      Everyone is using curetubes, n2pack cans in cold storage, and groveBags has a lot of good reviews. I think n2pack many month old properly cured flower is impressive and like it is fresh. I have grown and harvested in Denver indoor ops and Oregon outdoor acreage. Boveda just doesnt work longterm, it just doesnt help you longterm.

    • @dertythegrower
      @dertythegrower 2 года назад +2

      @@GordonLittell Yes, integra boost packs have been out longer and started these with cigars long ago (and it has a freshness indicator that turns another color when it goes stale). Boveda is typically sold most in the 62, correct. I do not think I have even seen many of the others, never seen a 65.

    • @dertythegrower
      @dertythegrower 2 года назад +1

      Most ops now are doing the 60F and 60RH standard, started a few years back.
      Also, I have tried some very old metrc dated flower that was good from nitrogen n2pack cans (high altitude denver flower) from Scott Reach's indoor operation. He uses a special 8th canning machine and I am impressed at every dated flower I tried from his farm. It seems to really help longterm keep things fresh, and maintain proper moisture (even stored properly at high altitudes which usually dry out faster)

    • @GordonLittell
      @GordonLittell 2 года назад +1

      @@dertythegrower I don't use boveda packs long term. I usually use them for a few days to a week to stabilize to 62 then I pull the packs. I did a long term test with the same product, the one without the boveda stunk up the room while the other was more earthy and muted. I agree that humidity packs are best for short periods 😁

    Idk, I started growing in a hot environment. Temperature would be 80 in the house with the AC on so I had to get a dual exhaust AC for the room (if you know you know)
    So anyways, there was no cool spots in that house so I would cure in my dresser drawer for a couple months and it would come out AMAZING. To the point I understand most growers still haven't figured it out. With that said, once I moved to a better environment (stable) better lighting/etc and while I'm doing mostly different strains the quality of the cure has dropped off a little. I can't get that AMAZING level that I hit routinely before. I'm getting bigger yields but not necessarily better. Only difference in my cure process is it's in the 60s now instead of 80+ degrees.

      All you had to do was get a dehumidifier at Home Depot simple stuff man....nothing wrong with light and fluffy that's more of the strain type or how much light the girls had during harvest full sun from am to pm matters in density and size not always because some strains are just not as dense aka heavy....

      Bud looses around 70% of it's weight after drying approximately...
      What matters is the smell the taste and the quality of the product...I always rather have quality over quantity but it's nice if you can find a good strain that can produce both if grown harvested and dried properly.
      It takes atleast a good month just hanging with the big leaves taken off let it dry slow and then dry trim it..bag it or seal it then open it for a minute let it keep sitting...

  • @tyrannosapienlex

    Open Query:
    I am in pursuit of 'greasy weed'. I don't know if that specific result is a genetic trait, an effect of a particular growing environment, or if it comes down to drying and curing a specific way. I've been blessed with that in the past, but inconsistently at best.
    At the time, I was hopping between MG soilless mix and RDWC with Peter's 20-20-20 & 10-50-15 nutes. Don't hurt yourself busting that gut, but I did get excellent results. Of course, Marc Emery provided some great genetics, back then. Notwithstanding the beefs he may have earned from his suppliers.
    Drying was never specifically regulated and curing only occurred whenever I opened the Rubbermaid. Ugh!
    Note to self: KEEP RECORDS (moron) 😁
    I'm hoping to learn a 'proven' method [or combination] that will produce 'greasy weed' for me, consistently.
    Greasy Weed = Saturates the roach, black like molasses and often ends up staining your tongue with little boogers of resin.
    In the bag, it is ready to smoke and yet, still feels resilient [if not down right MOIST].
    Thanks to all for any hints, clues, and/or shared experiences. Peace

I use Greenshock farms method of 24 hours high heat and super low humidity for 24 hours then go to normal until the stems snap , then in and out of sealed containers until perfect instead of burping . At the end 62% is perfect . It works , Greenshock farms wins Emerald Cup with their flowers

      @@jacobreynolds4547 do you do anything special to store excess before you have a chance to trim. I usually grow 4-6 plants a run and I'm the only trimmer. I see peeps use totes, paper grocery bags etc..?

      @@stangcobra592 , come harvest time I give them a couple days of darkness and then go in and either chop all of them or one at a time depending on how much there is . If it’s a lot I will chop one at a time , then I wet trim with a pair of scissors that I melted the rubber O ring out of , it might be weird but with some slop I can still do my trimming and don’t have to worry about cleaning off the scissors neatly as often . I go through and take off all the fan leaves and what doesn’t look worth saving until the plant is ready for final trim . If you wet trim the buds shrink and the trim job looks a little better afterwards unlike dry trimming . I never have to store anything but sometimes I hang them over me to motivate me to get moving 😂😂 Hope that helps , it seems to work out pretty well

    Dry flower is a huge issue in CO. Top shelf at most shops is just a joke as nothings cured or stored properly. Profile's just gone. My personal grow attempts, with proper curation; have yielded equal/better results (I'd consider myself an educated novice). Just move to CO? Look into Boveda products, they help.

    Burping? It's called sweating , it's a short cut.its used to draw the moisture out faster so you can dry in under 7 days.best drying method is hang dry in a room with the room humidity being the same humidity as buddy in the video says...oh ya also vent the drying room every couple days with exhaust fan ,might not be necessary but lots of wet weed raises humidity obviously and dehumidifier can handle but I like to just replace stale air.also airflow helps but can dry the outside faster so don't put fans directly onto the weed to try and speed up

    Any one heard heard of Brennenstuhl Moisture Detector. Stick the prongs in the stem and when it hits 12% it's ready for a grove bag, a good size bag that lets it work its magic and let the nugs breath releasing oxygen so no burping required. Not tried either but thinking about it and no need for 62% boveda either.

    How low in temperature can you go before it degrades the produce?

    • @OspreyVision
      @OspreyVision 2 года назад

      A lower temperature won't degrade the plant material. Many people curing the 50's degree range. If the room is too cool it can take longer to cure. The key is to use a dehumidifier and set it around 60%. This will keep the drying space dry even though the air temperature is low. Many people think heat is the way to cure, but it's actually more about humidity. If the air is too dry the plant matter will dry too quickly which degrades the quality of the finish product. Some of the best herb in Humboldt is slow dried for 2-4 weeks at a low temperature and with humidity in the 60% range. You could go with a higher humidity level to slow the process down even more, but once the humidity level get below 50% its curing too fast.
