Thanks for the well done video. I bought the new CT50 from Musician's Friend with a 15% off coupon--what a bargain! Mine is Firemist Silver, which looks like ice blue to me. The roasted maple neck is awesome. Love this guitar, it would be hard to get more bang for the buck. Cheers!
Love that you came out firing with my go-to song to test out any single coil guitar. I’ve only played the HSS version of the new one and was pleasantly surprised but how well it played. Does the old one have the same string spacing for open chords? Aka the narrow nut opens up at 2nd fret. Also, how’s the trem unit for subtle Pink Floyd type use?
Hi man, its a great song to check out the tone of single coils and you never have to play it the same way either haha The old one is a very different guitar in fairness. The neck carve, string spacing and way it changes as you go up feels like a more premium guitar on reflection. The new one is still really good, but its much more uniform feeling hope that makes sense. As for the trem, i think both old and new have very decent stable and easy to set up trems.
@@Paul-D That’s the beauty of that song ha…Don’t even have to sing it the same way. I’ll have to look around for the older model to try out. Always avoided strats cause the volume knob location and loose trem bars…these solved both my issues. Thanks!
Love this idea of old vs new bcs I’ve been trying to figure out if there’s a difference in the Sterling Ax3 line up between the old and new besides the colors and the necks and haven’t been able to find anything
I have an older one that was made in Indonesia I got in 2017. Wonder how it would compare to the new one? I definitely want to get one with a Roasted Maple Neck though. Those are sweet.
The differences I heard are within the range of varying the pickup heights. Were both guitars set with the pickups exactly the same distance from the strings?
Neck = new for sure...not sure about the others. 😃 I do prefer the look of the body of the new...hmmm...all in all it's tough. I assume I'd prefer the new consistent shape of the new, not necessarily the roasted maple. Anyway..it is out with the old and in with the new. That's how things roll. Nice man!!!
Certainly is, im just glad they are still good guitars. Definitely surprised by just how different they are. The firemist and blue will be on the channel when they eventually get here 🙂
build quality still seems to be pretty decent. They do seem prone to cracking finish wise around the neck pocket but same can be said on any Strat type bolt on.
Hi, I am interested in the the Sterling Cutless CT50 and was wondering about the neck profile. I normally play acoustics (Martin/Taylor) both of which are pretty flat and have a normal c profile I think. I have small hands so don't want something which is too thick. I've tried a normal modern Strat and it seems very similar to the Martin/Taylor guitars. Thanks.
Hi, great question as the neck on the older CT50 and new roasted maple CT50 are very different indeed. The new one is a slim/medium C throughout the whole neck. Very standard and comfy, the unfinished roasted maple does have its own feel too. Praised by most... but i can see why it may feel weird for others. Good luck, you cant really go wrong with the CT50 tbf. Its a solid guitar.
As someone has already said, the old one sounds ‘fatter’, but the note separation isn’t great, old one has superb note separation, which one is best depends on what you’re going to play on it
The older ones pickups were lower output by a huge margin so so say comes down to what you would play / taste. I personally quite like low output pickups. Believe it or not the pups were actually set slightly higher in the older one and yet still noticably lower output haha.
I think I prefer the new ones.. I want the same guitar u have but with humbucker and ridiculously seems there is not that option... love that Guitar color and roasted maple neck
Did you experience terrible tuning stability issues? This guys pretty much say these Sterling are garbage… I do not know if for some reason he has personal problem with the brand because is brutal what he expose here … but also seems scary to buy these gtrs according to this video. ruclips.net/video/BNoPjJ-K0JE/видео.html
In my experience they benefited from being set up properly out of the box after abit of settling in time as most guitars do... But the stock locking tuners were decent and trem etc were fine. Nothing out of order for the price point and I had a few of these at the time and have since had another that I filmed too. the HSS - ill check his video out
@@Paul-D that guy said that the studs and screws of the bridge are the problem, that they rock and are not tight.. so that creates huge tuning stability issues.. if that is true is very bad
So I watched the video and in fairness, he's coming at the guitar from a very different angle to me. he needs higher performance parts being a more shred type player. Im not at all interested in the shred personally. I do agree with him on the whole flutter thing though, Charvel / Ibanez do that better... But I didnt encounter anything like the tuning issues he mentions on 5 plus of these models ive had. so there we go haha
@@Paul-D my point is that a great guitar with great tuning stability is necessary for any guitar player, shredder or not… now my point is that I can not believe other players notices and agree with what he say on any of the RUclips reviews… or maybe he is a lemon man and all the gtrs he get come with issues… or the rep of Sterling went out with his GF…
Thanks for the great demo. I love the more resonant sound of the new version and (almost) everything else about it.👍
There decent guitars. I seen a few new colours released recently which is a cool thing
@@Paul-D I like that dark sunburst.
In every conceivable way I preferred the new one to the old, with one exception, and that was on Sultans of Swing.
the newer one is a very different sounding guitar tbf. much hotter pickups
Fantastic HENDRIX and KNOPFLER tones! 👍🏻😍👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Many thanks!!
Thanks for demoing with "yellow ledbetter" that is my go to test for SC neck tone.
Good choice!
Thanks for doing this. I'm more of a plunker than a legit guitarist, so I depend on pros like you to steer me in the right direction.
First time ive ever been called a pro so ill take it 😅 thanks for watching dude.

Ahhh my favourite finish on them one nice one!
Thanks for the review. I just picked up the old one used with a hot rail in the bridge. Love the Sterling CT-40 for the price.
Enjoy it
Did you get the seafoam green one off reverb?

New one sounds much better. Darker, richer. That's a tone u can take to the bank. I'd still by a strat first tho ^^
I get that, i have the Fender Strat too and enjoy both :)

@@frossbog the older one was set slightly closer believe it or not. The newer one definitely has slightly hotter pickups.
The new one sounds fatter. If it had the cream knobs and pick up covers it would look better. Just my opinion.
I’d take either one !!

They do it as HSS. The HH is called the sabre i think from memory
Please compare with Sire S7 - Both are priced quite similarly I believe , with similar specs
Have to see if i come across one. It was the Sire semi hollow i was interested in H7? I think

@@Paul-D thanks for going deeper and checking that video to answer me back!! 👍
These sound really thin, even compared to the music man version.
Ive never tried a proper music man cutlass. Will try and get one in at some point for sure.
I would buy the new 1. For the simple fact it's not made in china.
Compare them to a real musicman made in the USA 🙂👍🏻
Would love too. Need to find one from the USA first. They are vastly more expensive so id be very interested
