In Dennis Rodman's autobiography, he said there were only 2 White players that would not be intimidated. Larry Bird and Danny Ainge. Bird had too much confidence in his game and his skills. Ainge was just nuts.

He also was an amazing golfer. He actually could have gotten his PGA card in 82 but didn't qualify because at that time you had to play in at least 4 tournaments a year and he didn't have the time.

I’ve been saying this about Danny Ainge ever since I saw him playing professional baseball at third base for the Toronto Blue Jays while STILL in college at BYU and starring in Basketball. Absolutely mind blowing. I’m not sure if this is true or not but I remember hearing the reason he was still eligible to play college basketball is that he was playing a different sport professionally!

@@USR__ I didn't know that. Today most top athletes become specialists in one sport. My son played 3 sports in Middle school and wanted to in HS as well. However he was best in one sport, and his coach insisted he stop playing the other sports. The coach was right as he went on to play D1 ball and came close to the pros.

Ainge was great, but let's talk about another triple threat. In his senior year of high school, Joe Mauer was the USA Today High School Player of the Year in two sports, and twice was named all-state in a third. In two years as starting QB at Cretin Derham Hall in St Paul, Mauer threw for 5528 yards and 73 TDs. He batted .567 in four years playing for the same school's varsity baseball team, striking out only once in four seasons. And as a senior he batted .605. And Mauer averaged over 20 points per game and was named all-state twice in basketball. Mauer chose baseball over football and basketball, was the first catcher ever to win a batting title in the American League (eventually winning three), and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in the 2024 class.
Who's to say who was the best prep athlete of all time?

That's the same for the athletes listed below who I often see mentioned, and I doubt any could have been a top 5 pick in both sports besides Elway. Gibson would have been #1 in MLB if teams weren't worried about him choosing football, but the Tigers drafted him 6th I think. At MSU's pro day all NFL teams timed him under 4.3 on 3 runs. At 6'3 225lb he looked like a run-away bull.

You are right, he is not fully appreciated athletically. That said his performance in MLB was ... poor. Light hitting, no power, too tall and lanky to be a middle infielder, too weak at the plate to be anything else. You might say he would have developed into and good player given time and focus, and that may be true. The Blue Jays thought so and rushed him through the minors faster than might have been warranted hoping to convince him to drop basketball and go full time in baseball. And it almost worked. I think he made the right choice in the end. He was never an All-NBA kind of player, but he was a productive member of championship teams and calling him hard nosed would be an understatement. He was one of a kind.
