Remember having a "Greatest Sporting moments" book when I was young. It described how Jim Thorpe won EVERYTHING in 1912. Talked about the stripping of his medals and his challenges as a Native American. Fascinating story
Great video…some of this I already knew, but you revealed a boatload of things I never heard of. What an amazing man and unbelievable athlete. Super job on this!
Jim also had his track shoes stolen on the morning of his olympic gold medal events and found a mismatch pair of shoes in the garbage that he then went on to win 2 gold medals in.
@@voxathleticaalso athletes today have it good, real good today and make more money and only focus on 1 sport in the olympics and also thanks to advancement in technology & science, you know athletes is gonna take advantage of it, on top of that put aquire knowledge and better equipment and more film to watch. Athletes back than had it way tougher and harder than athletes today will ever have it today
If your face looks like that without steroids, then god gifted you with ridiculous testosterone production. That said, he was not likely to be greatest of all time. Unless you are referring to "athlete" as someone who specifically competes in Olympics athletics, there were probably many many people more athletic than him in a general sense that existed before and after him.
Was he the greatest Olympian of all time? Not, he wasn't. But I feel that the contributions he made to many other unrelated sports are huge and, when you put it all together, he's got a strong case for the GOAT. Thanks for checking out the video!
Jim Thorpe was a true sports renaissance man.
You are, of course, 100% correct. Brilliant athlete who was on a totally different level
I've known this for years. He was spectacular at nearly everything. He should have been considered for THE top athlete of the 20th century.
It is very hard to disagree with you there, to be THAT good at THAT many sports is incredible
You forgot to mention he was a successful ballroom dancer, winning the 1912 intercollegiate championship
Dude was a genius!

It's such an incredible story, I knew it from long ago too but I felt compelled to put together a video on him. Jim Thorpe lived one heck of a life
He preferred to be called an (American) Indian.

Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Cool to have a town and, briefly, a pro lacrosse team (Jim Thorpe All-Americans of the PBLA) named for him.
Right!? When you get a town named after you, and it's literally your full name, you know you were incredible

Because of course he did, everything about this guy was on the next level lol
Blooper : The star of the movie was Burt LANCASTER, not Burt Reynolds.
Yup, I put the text on the screen to correct myself, I'm such a moron
@@voxathletica No, it was just a slip :-)
@@gabithemagyar Thanks for understanding :)
But difficult to compare an athlete 100 years ago to today, he's very clearly a very unique athlete, capable in so many sports.
Definitely hard to compare across generations, it's a different world for sure. But against his peers, he was so far ahead it's insane

He's definately up there, for sure. However, for me, Terry Fox, can never be beat as the greatest athlete of all time
As a Canadian, of course, I would agree with you. Terry Fox is a national hero
Yes
I tend to agree with you
He was if Pablo Sanchez was a real person
He was so impossibly talented, it's insane
He was hot!
Such a babe
This guy must have a huge bucket list before his death. 😂
He probably crossed off most of those items!

Weak argument from a couch potato
No he isn't. It's Michael Phelps.
